Starting center Jones will have arthroscopic knee surgery (plus scrimmage stats)

This from AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:

Georgia center Ben Jones was one of three starting offensive linemen to miss today’s scrimmage in Sanford Stadium.

He sat out with a knee injury and will have arthroscopic surgery Sunday.

Coach Mark Richt said it’s a meniscus and cartilage issue and that Jones should return in time for the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. Jones is expected to miss the next couple of weeks of practice.

Richt said it’s best to go ahead and have the surgery instead of Jones trying to play through it and have it lock up during the season, when he would miss two or three games.

Jones was joined on the sidelines today by guard Cordy Glenn (mono) and tackle Josh Davis (ankle).

Richt said the defense dominated play in the scrimmage, which was closed to the media. On a scale of 1-10, Richt rated the day a 7 for the defense and a 4 for the offense.

Here are scrimmage stats provided by UGA:

Passing

Aaron Murray: 8-for-20, 133 yards, long of 46 yards

Whats the difference in a UGA fan and a catfish? One is a scum sucking bottom feeder, and the other is a fish.

Did any of you “bummers” out there ever play football ? It would be refreshing to read some intelligent comments regarding a “scrimmage”………Hell folks, we didn’t just play an SEC game, we had a scrimmage !!!!!……….a scrimmage is a way to simulate game situations, throw out the stats, and hell yeh we have tight ends, but apparently they are so good, they don’t need as much intense work, at least , they didn’t on Saturday !………Yup, we have a few bumps and dings on the Oline and at LB, but dry those eyes BULLDOG NATION, everything will be just fine when the season starts !……………..And by the way, pay no attention to that fool that is always @thebar……..he’s probubly drinking yellow jello shooters, never went to college, and couldn’t get a girl to go out with him if his life depended on it…………Regards to all, RED

I don’t like Roll Tide’s comments any more than many of you do, but the truth hurts when it comes to the OL. Richt has not recruited very well at the OL postion on a year by year basis, pointing to his length of tenure. If you look at the roster, there are hardly any third or forth year players of any consequence, most of the linemen on the roster are freshmen except for the five starters. The few that are there besides Trinton, are unheard of’s who have not contributed in a meaningful way. Harmon for instance was all the rage when recruited, silent ever since. The above poster’s who keep screaming “Let the excuses begin”, should not be totally ignored, they do have a point. Richt needs his OL to be dominant just as BoBo said before practice began. If it is not, and our running game, and offense in general suffers because of it, it will not be a very smart move for Richt to moan about the OL, because it has become very evident that the shortcomings here are his own fault. Recruiting on the OL is right up there near the top in importance to success in our league, but has not been his strong suit. These freshmen that we have acquired recently may be very good, but it may be too little, too late for Richt, as he desperately needs success now. I also hope that his recent recruitment of 250lb. DT’s do not throw our defense backwards. The day of having linemen sit around for two or three years trying to gain SEC playing weight are gone. After a redshirt year, linemen should be ready to contribute if your program is to remain a factor for championships in the SEC.

This year, Ealey will run 2 times for 20 yards and then King will come it. Sometimes, I wish that Ritch would simply ride a hot back for a while instead of that switching. Ealey is a much better back than King. King is a very good backup.

It’s probably a little premature to worry about OL injuries, but it seems that Georgia has that problem a LOT. A thin OL due to injuries. Are we coaching em differently than other schools, or is it just happenstance ?

Thanks Columbus Dawg. Richt’s failure to go after this type of offensive lineman also serves to empower the competition. For example, when Neil Calloway( or KKK for Krazy Koach Kolloway) was the offensive line coach, he evaluated Marcus Mcneil as “lazy”. I guess that would be ok if McNeil signed with a Big Eight school. Instead he ends up at Auburn and kicks our butt before becoming a 1st round draft pick of the Chargers where he’s become an All-Pro.The same thing is happening now. These players are no joke, especially No. 60 at South Carolina,( Terrence Campbell) and No. 57 at Auburn (Byron Isom), and the left side of Bama’s offensive front.( Carpenter/Warmack). These decisions by Richt and Bobo have long range consequences. And they’re negative ones. It’s inconceivable to me as well that they didn’t make a serious run at Cam Newton the second time around. You’ve effectively handed Auburn a 6-6″ 250lb, physical freak and are countering that with a 5′11″ redshirt freshman who struggles seeing over the line of scrimmage. It’s insane. They need to look at replacing Bobo, who’s only there because his wife happens to be Barbara Dooley’s neice. With Saban and Meyer in the conference, Richt needs to cut out being this cutesy nice guy that moves practices to accomodate weddings (if that’s the real reason) and get serious.

its a scrimmage. the defense is always ahead of the offense early on. the o-line will be fine. UGA has depth there and plus its good for the young linemen to get some reps for later on.

UGA runs a pro style offense. it takes time for everyone to be on the same page. no worries, the bulldoags will be ready by game time in south carolina. they will have a chance to work out all the kinks the first week against lafayette.

its all good..

If the offensive line is banged up all year expect this team to win about 5 games at most! This was suppose to be the strength of the team. You have an inexperienced qb, running backs who only run well when holes are provided, and recievers who need time for routes to open up. Also, is it me is anyone else wondering why Logan Gray is getting more playing time at receiver than highly coveted Marlon Brown. This guy is turning out to be a major BUST! I predict he will be transferring pretty soon. All of the trouble we went through to recruit this guy and I haven’t heard his name called once in any of these scrimmages. He is a complete BUST!

I got a email from a Dawgs fan in St. Louis, Mo. who is going to use the UGA lunchbox for his grandson’s first fishing tackle box, how cool is that. Hopefully the linemen are going to be in good shape by the time second game. Obviously any team wants its best players on the field. But I am of the opinion, that even if a couple of those Linemen are out, if we don’t have a good solid line anyway, I am not sure we were going to even with them. At some point a team has to be deeper than having a good O-line every 3 to 4 years and only if this or that certain group are 100%. Hopefully we not only corrected that this year , but also (like some of our competition) are into a cycle of having a solid line next year and the next year…..

However, my challenge to you : Take a good look at the Oline players who have come in over the last three years. Look at their pt, look at who was red shirted, look at their ratings coming out of HS, then tell me coach Mark Richt hasn’t given much thought to our Oline for 2010, 2011,2012 and 2013………..Good Grief folks !!!!!……….We are loaded…………But just keep listening to Bamatoiletpaperrole …er….a….Tide Role………If it makes you feel better………Regards, RED
