This from AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:
Georgia center Ben Jones was one of three starting offensive linemen to miss today’s scrimmage in Sanford Stadium.
He sat out with a knee injury and will have arthroscopic surgery Sunday.
Coach Mark Richt said it’s a meniscus and cartilage issue and that Jones should return in time for the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. Jones is expected to miss the next couple of weeks of practice.
Richt said it’s best to go ahead and have the surgery instead of Jones trying to play through it and have it lock up during the season, when he would miss two or three games.
Jones was joined on the sidelines today by guard Cordy Glenn (mono) and tackle Josh Davis (ankle).
Richt said the defense dominated play in the scrimmage, which was closed to the media. On a scale of 1-10, Richt rated the day a 7 for the defense and a 4 for the offense.
Here are scrimmage stats provided by UGA:
Passing
Aaron Murray: 8-for-20, 133 yards, long of 46 yards
Hutson Mason: 8-for-18, 48 yards
Parker Welch: 2-5, 15 yards
Greg Bingham: 0-1
Rushing
Washaun Ealey: 7 carries, 78 yards
Caleb King: 7 carries, 18 yards

Michael Bennett: 4 catches, 20 yards
Tavarres King: 1 catch, 41 yards
Aron White: 3 catches, 27 yards
A.J Green: 1 catch (yards not available)
Defense
Akeem Hebron: 5 tackles, fumble recovery
Brandon Boykin: 4 tackles
Kwame Geathers: 3 tackles, ½ sack
Alec Ogletree: 3 tackles, pass breakup

ASK these: and did you look at WHO uga played to get those 8 wins? # easy OOC games Tech, Vandy and Kentucky. That is 6 wins without UGA even showing up to the game. Add USC and Auburn most years and UGA has 8 wins. I don’t see UGA beating Bama, LSU, Florida, and Tennessee all the time to get 8 wins. Has it happened yes, but not regularly.

DIT,
I hope you are right. We will have to wait and see what happens after a few games. He didn’t do all that well in the Spring game or these first 2 scrimmages (doesn’t mean he isn’t a good player, he just hasn’t done anything yet that we can hang our hat on). I am cautiously optomistic.

Buck didn’t win anything. Hershel won that with a great run by Lindsey on a 10 yard pass. Buck was an option QB that just had to make a few plays and not make mistakes. Bama QBs have Rings and Trophies for doing the samething too.

I have been watching high school football for many years and I do not believe Georgia recruit the best players in the state. Some of the players who were drafted in the last two NFL drafts were not recruited by Georgia. I do not know whether Mack Brown will be successful at the University of Florida but Georgia did not recruit him until Florida showed interest.

Reduced huh? Hmm. I think Murray will be ok. Ealey will handle the offense early. The big tight ends will have a good deal of catches early especialy with opposing defenses having to respect Green. Jones is IMO the most underrated center in the league. He needs to be healthy.

You’re an idiot. Nobody is jealous of Georgia, certainly not a team that has beaten you 17 of the last 20 times and has won two national titles in the last four seasons.

Tuck AJ is great at catching the ball but he is weak. A good Aggressive corner can shut him down. AJ don’t like no contact. He is like Deion Sanders. A lot of flash but not guts. Cooper Taylor is wanting to see AJ on Nov.

Weak huh? Well Patrick Peterson who everyones agrees is the best corner in the league, says that Green is the best reciever he has ever played against. Ill take him at his word. Just wish he would have had a qb last year.

Less than 50% passing accuracy isn’t going to cut it in the SEC. Murray has the talent, but he’s got to step up and improve the accuracy.
I’m concerned about this offense. I think the D will be significantly better than last year. We’ve got lots of work to do before the SC game. Let’s hope Cordy gets better soon, because he’s the only true road grader we have up front.

Why do you think UGA goes to Memphis, Miami, and Alabama to sign these guys when superior talent is here in Ga. Why do you think that’s the case UGA fans ? you know the answer , and it’s inexcusable in this day and time, Oh, I left out Cam Newton the Gunner from atlanta who’s going to start for Auburn at QB. TUCK and Vince Dooley said every week that his POOR Dagw just couldn’t be on the field with USC, UF, UT, AU, and just pick a team. Peterson was just POOR MOUTHING and pumping up AJ for the GAME. AJ is weak and you will see it. Vince Dooley was a god at POOR MOUTHING his team before a game and won they won he aced like it was a suprise the Dawgs put 50 on Kentucky. HAHAH give me a break. AJ is weak weak weak. He can’t regularly beat a physical fast DB. I love the guys talent and route running. I just don’t think he is even close to what J Jones at Bama is. AJ will have to leave after this year no natter what too. Has to take the money. It would not be worth the risk to return in 11.

Good grief, the same people that questioned a red shirt fr (no game expirence) and a true fresman at QB wondered just weeks ago if the QB’s could even complete a pass. They said GA made a mistake on Mason. Some wondered aloud if they could throw a ball in this offense because one threw from the spread offense.Others said Mason wouldn’t even find the field in his carrer at GA. As they improve the doubts/arguments change to some new area. I say it’s pretty amazing they are showing you what they are made of. It’s not like they are playing aganst a bad defense. Think about the questions they have already answered. They didn’t think Mason could even learn the offense by fall. They will continue to get better and better. Some folks just have to find something to complain about. They’ll have growing pains but is not obvious they can play. Just keep working. QB’s

Jones lost several million dollars in the NFL draft by playing at Bama. He should have went to Oklahoma instead of the run oriented offense of Saban. Imagine what his passing stats would have been with Bradford.

Agree on Jones having surgery now. Even if he isn’t ready until SC, it seems the right thing to do. It sure is easy to tell someone else when to have surgery isn’t it?

8 of 20 for a paltry 133 yds including a 46 yarder accounting for most of that yardage. Am I imagining things or is that only a 40% completion rate? This kid Murray just aint got it. CMR fired this year or next year at the latest. Book it Danno!

Why do you think Alabama is going all over the South to sign guys when there is superior talent in state? Why do you think that is the case Bama fans? You know the answer and it is inexcusable in this day and time.
There were at least 20 offensive linemen last year alone in Alabama that signed with other schools and Saban did not recruit them. A message to Saban and Smart, thanks coach, and keep’em coming.
You have Cameron Newton available and Kirby and Nick chose to pass on him in favor of McElroy, didn’t want to rock the boat. Then, for 2011, they go to Florida for a 3 star QB named Philip Ely. Something is wrong here, and you know what it is.

Did you guys see the article on the Florida Board regarding their offensive line. Hell, their second unit is better than Uga’s starters. . You do not have a Chaz Green on your campus. Richt and Bobo are two peas in a pod. Both “hotshot” qbs, who would rather call a couple of plays that make them look smarter than the other guy than just physically whip some one. You don’t need two former qbs as your head coach and offensive co-ordinator. Ya’ll are going to be terrible in the red zone again, and Florida’s going to whip you for the zillioneth time because Richt and Bobo refuse to play the necessary offensive lineman to control the ball. Moving Anderson is insane and ranks up their with your failure to go after Cam Newton. It’s got to be tough being a Dawg. It makes you want to get drunk, and ride around with some red panties between your legs. Roll Tide.
