Starting center Jones will have arthroscopic knee surgery (plus scrimmage stats)

This from AJC correspondent Andy Johnston in Athens:

Georgia center Ben Jones was one of three starting offensive linemen to miss today’s scrimmage in Sanford Stadium.

He sat out with a knee injury and will have arthroscopic surgery Sunday.

Coach Mark Richt said it’s a meniscus and cartilage issue and that Jones should return in time for the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. Jones is expected to miss the next couple of weeks of practice.

Richt said it’s best to go ahead and have the surgery instead of Jones trying to play through it and have it lock up during the season, when he would miss two or three games.

Jones was joined on the sidelines today by guard Cordy Glenn (mono) and tackle Josh Davis (ankle).

Richt said the defense dominated play in the scrimmage, which was closed to the media. On a scale of 1-10, Richt rated the day a 7 for the defense and a 4 for the offense.

Here are scrimmage stats provided by UGA:

Passing

Aaron Murray: 8-for-20, 133 yards, long of 46 yards

One of the first to comment. I would rather hold them out to keep them healthy than risk it. Cant wait till Sept. 4th!!!

Has anyone else noticed that Ealey has a far better yards-per-carry average than does King. I’ve noticed that each time scrimmage stats have been listed.

If I’m not mistaken he also had a better average last year as well. If that is going to be the case I hope Richt will let Ealey be the primary back.

Nice job by Murray & Mason today.

Logan performed great, again. He’s gonna be a playmaker.

Ealey looked great again, over 10 yards a carry, AGAIN! Heisman year in store for him. He’s the starter, sorry Caleb.

NO INTERCEPTIONS FROM THE QB’S!!!!! Didn’t think it was possible.

Not worried about accuracy, and passing td’s for now.

#1 defense dominated, that’s what we need to see.

Formula is:
1) Defense
2) Run the ball
3) Limit interceptions from UGA QB’s to 1 every 2 games

King was OVER BLOWN in high school. He isn’t that good. He is the Buck Belew of UGA runningbacks. All King has to do is hold on to the ball and just rush for a few yards per game. Ealey is the real deal.

We had 3 starting -OLineman out today as precautionary, they’re all fine, will be ready for game 1, but that hurt today’s offense. The defense is also just getting real good, real fast.

I’m not worried about the offense. It’s the defense that has to get it’s act together quickly. O-Line injuries don’t sound serious. Of course you have to get the lone techie on here with his/her mindless dribble. Still, would like to see the tech golfers do well in the PGA tourney.
Sept. 4th can not get here soon enough! Go Dawgs!

Akeem Hebron getting people to notice. Who knew? The kid can play. He’s a baller. #5 ranked LB ocming out of high school, a 5 star all the way. Got into some trouble, had to play at Jr. college, then had an injury last year. Hope he can stay out of trouble.

Ok, Ealey is obviously the better back between the two and he should be the starter day one. I see Ealey having a huge season. 7 carries for 78 yards? And the other day he had 66 yards on only 5 carries. He seems to be VERY explosive not needing a lot of carries to get near 100. Glad to see our defense starting to come around and play fast and hard. I hope our O-linemen come back healthy, 100% and ready to hit some people in the mouth. GO DAWGS!

If Ealey can get 66 yards and 78 yards on just 5 or 7 carries…then imagine how many yards the kid can get if handed the ball about 20-25 times a game. You do the math.

Cornelius & Alec both getting a PBU, that’s what we like to see. Ogletree is the real deal, can’t keep him off the field. He’s going to dominate on special teams, Alec might be starting on defense before the season’s out, one of the best defenders in the country.

Nice job by Coach Bobo, getting through the game WITHOUT AN INTERCEPTION. That’s gonna be the tell-tale stat thsi year. Good to see Coach Bobo FINALLY getting his message through to his QB’s. 40% accuracy, some sacks, 0 interceptions, great. All we need from the QB’s this year, don’t need any Hero’s at QB.

Can’t baby the offense. have to open it up. Good teams with good defenses will figure this out and shut it down. Bobo is not a good enough OC for them to b one dimensional. With all the OL we should not have a problem blocking when a starter goes down. We should be able to plug in one of the other big bodies and keep right on moving. We have depth on the OL. Searles needs to toughen the OL up and give them a mean streak. Great job by Grantham’s defense. Bobo can blame Murray but, it is his job to get him ready. If he messes up in scrimmage, fix on the spot before the season starts.

I’m telling you people, which seem to be most, that are not familar with Murray. I live down here in Tampa and he is the real deal. Everyone will be pleasantly surprised. I have gator friends down here that say he is going to be just as good if not better than Brantley. Now, remember these are gator fans that already think Brantley is the 1st or 2nd best QB in the SEC. They know Murray will be dangerous.
And techies… just keep posting your envious, mindless, dribble. It gives us a good laugh.

UGA is the only school to post at least 8 wins over the last 13 years. Not Florida, not Ohio State, not Texas and not Alabama have done better. THEIR excuse? I have not a clue. Ask them why they have not done better than UGA.

Facts are facts ……………UGA is the only schhol to win 8 or more and we also visited the Sugar Bowl 3 times and won it twice over this same period ……………plus, 2- Capitol One Bowls and Outback and etc. Also finisehd # 2 once and we are proud of it.

Folks ……….you know who you are ………..your alma mater has not achieved this, so you bad mouth UGA> Fine, we UGA alums love knowing that you are jealous.

TUCK Missing some starting linemen? Doesn’t UGA have a deep O-line with many players having game experience? The D-line is where all the experience left and they still got sacks.Hutson will get playing time by the 3rd game. UGA should have played a second QB by the 3rd game last year and didn’t. I hope Bobo stays that stupid this year, but I think Mason plays early and often.

Observations:

18 completed passes by QB’s, but only 8 catches listed, so I assume that the TE’s and RB’s caught some short passes that weren’t listed. I have to believe that the TE position caught some balls today, but no single TE had a big day.

7 sacks is a good thing, not a bad one. The OL protected well last year, but we didn’t get much pressure on the QB last year. Even with 3 projected starters on OL not playing… there is enough depth that this is more likely good play by the D than bad play by the O.

AJ was held out, right? If so, that significantly changes our offensive firepower. Not surprising that the offense wasn’t dominant.

Caleb King doesn’t appear to be as good as the other backs we have had at UGA in the Richt Era. Nothing against him and I hope he proves me wrong, but he looks more like a backup than a starter throughout his career to this point. Not that he can’t help the team, but it seems obvious that Washaun gets better results.

Love to see Logan doing so well at receiver already and love to see Hebron gaining confidence and getting it done at LB! These were two players that we weren’t really COUNTING on to be big contributors.

Glad to see Kiante making a contribution at DE
