McGarity’s route from Florida to Georgia ran through NYC, Chicago

RELATED: UGA sees tough side in nice-guy AD McGarity

(Updated 8 p.m. Friday)

ATHENS — A 2 1/2-hour lunch in New York and a two-hour interview in Chicago brought Greg McGarity home to Athens.

The University of Georgia on Friday named McGarity, the University of Florida’s No. 2 athletics official and an Athens native, as its new athletic director — the culmination of a speedy process that McGarity acknowledged left him pinching himself.

McGarity, 55, was formally introduced at a Friday afternoon news conference as the successor to Damon Evans, who resigned as Georgia’s AD in the aftermath of a June 30 DUI arrest. Moments before the news conference, the UGA Athletic Board approved a five-year contract that will start McGarity at $420,000 per year with $20,000 raises each subsequent year. He’ll also get a $125,000 longevity bonus if he completes the contract.

McGarity said he was offered the job in a Wednesday morning phone call from UGA President Michael Adams, whom he had met for the first time over a long lunch in New York about 2 1/2 weeks earlier.

“It was just great,” McGarity said of that first meeting. “I left there thinking, ‘I feel like I’m speaking with someone I’ve known a long time.’”

The process continued last Saturday, when McGarity was interviewed for two hours by Georgia’s six-person search committee at a Chicago airport hotel, the O’Hare Hilton. The committee interviewed a number of candidates — it’s unclear how many — over two days at the hotel.

McGarity said he was “really nervous” in the days leading to the high-stakes interview. “I was having a hard time sleeping,” he said. But he left the interview feeling, “You know what, I’ve done the best I could. Let the best person win.”

Search-committee chairman David Shipley, a UGA law professor, was reluctant to discuss details of the interviews in Chicago, which he referred to only as a “neutral site.” He said “more than” four candidates from around the country — he wouldn’t name them — were interviewed for two hours each, with the committee taking one-hour breaks between interviews. Adams was present for the interviews as a “fly on the wall,” Shipley said.

At the end of the interviews, the committee voted by secret ballot, each member ranking the candidates. Once back in Athens, the committee reconvened.

“And there was full agreement on this,” Shipley said, meaning the hire of McGarity. The ultimate call was Adams’.

Early Wednesday morning, Adams made the call — literally.

Around 8:30 a.m., McGarity’s cellphone rang, interrupting a conference call he was having on another line.

“I saw the call [from Adams] coming through as ‘private number’ on my BlackBerry,” McGarity said, “and I thought, ‘Well, it’s either thumbs-up or thumbs-down.’ Dr. Adams offered the job and spoke about the reasons, and … it was just a dream come true.

“It was one of those things where you just say, ‘You know, this really did happen. I’ve got to pinch myself.’”

McGarity grew up in Athens, where his first childhood job was chasing tennis balls for legendary UGA coach Dan Magill. McGarity earned a journalism degree from Georgia in 1976 and started his career at UGA, working in a variety of roles in the athletics department before leaving for Florida in 1992.

“It is indeed great to be home,” said McGarity, whose parents, brother and sister live in Athens.

He will start his new job Sept. 1.

“Given the circumstances that surrounded this opening,” Adams said, “there is some healing here yet to be done, and I believe Greg is the type of person who can facilitate that healing.

“Greg has told me this job is his lifelong dream. … I am convinced that he is the right person at the right time at the right institution.”

Look at the record folks. CMR has done a terrific job. Does he need to show a different look this year? Yes, but “greed is a terrible thing”. Just ask some “Cricket” fans what they think now of pushing Bobby Dood out when he had a series if 7-3 seasons and played in the Gator Bowl.

First order of business is get that game out of Jacksonville. Greg should know better than anyone that Jacksonville is about as neutral as the beaches at Normandy. As a Savannah boy, I’d say alternate sites each year, one in Jacksonville, one in Savannah like in the 30s right after the depression!

I would bet the house that “ANYBODY” was NOT a scholarship D1 football player, or he would not display such ignorance. Sure, we all want to beat the Gators the way Coach Dooley’s teams did, but you must keep the big picture in perspective.

I would like a 4 year cycle…

year 1: Jacksonville,
year 2: Sanford Stadium
year 3: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
year 4: Georgia Dome

McGarity’s contract includes a signing bonus of a hundred pairs of red panties. The racy kind from Victoria’s Secret. He has to find his own bimbo, however.

He can earn his pay by sacking Mark Richt for starters.

LHardingDawg, when would this comment be appropriate? After we have wasted another 10 years? UGA fans and alumni, we deserve a great coach. Not just a nice little coach who teaches players no discipline. Who cannot judge talent. Nice man who can’t coach. Wake up!

Will McGarity try to start cleaning up the stinking sewer of an athletic department at UGA? That’s the big question.

Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a sleezebag Dooley is:

O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

Nothing has changed at UGA, they just do a slightly better job of keeping things quiet, but that’s hard to do when 42 of your player-thugs have been arrested, isn’t it?

Hopefully, the new AD will have higher goals than preparing athletes to work at the post office.

Red panties. I almost forgot that.

I’ve been going to the GA/FL game in Jacksonville since 1974 and do not want to move the game away from Jacksonville. Over the years, some of the greatest Georgia games ever have been played down there. We have as many people as they do in the stands and in the parking lots, with Florida having no advantage in any area of the game. The games we have lost would have been loses anywhere, in Jacksonville, Atlanta, Athens, or Gainesville. They had better teams that we did and when we had the best team, we won.

Look at Notre Dame, Michigan, or Nebraska. They have all fell on hard times. Florida has been up for 20 years, give or take a year. Give them time and they will also fall on some hard times. Maybe this year.

Give me a break people

I remember the days when we used to punch FL in the mouth, and not one time did I ever here a UGA fan say, hey lets make this a home and home or lets play it at Fulton County Stadium.

No I would always hear, Man I cant wait to go to Jacksonville for the big game

Yea lets change it so we can here more Gaterd fans laugh at us and say oh the wimpy UGA fans had to have the game moved because they thought it wasnt fair and were to scared

Man up people your like these current players and coaches to scared to face FL and need to change your uniforms to get motivated.

COWARDS

By the way its a neutral field, the way it has been since 1933, 42,000 FL fans get tickets, 42,000 UGA fans get tickets

You can play the game anywhere you want and it will not matter, until you man up and punch them in the mouth, you might as well bend over and get prepared for a beat down

MAN UP PEOPLE, and YOU TO COACHING STAFF, EARN YOUR PAY LIKE THE REST OF US HAVE TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How long should I keep the big picture in perspective? Should I wait until 3 more Tennessee teams that we are far superior to beat us? How about I just wait until KY and Vandy beat us with players that we would have never even offered a scholly? Big Picture.

Oh yes! Stinger Biter. I imagine that all SEC coaches are just in terror of playing against the genious CMR. CMR, who never loses games he should win. CMR who always finds a way to beat a few teams each year that he isn’t supposed to beat.
Get a life. CMR is a joke. A notorious under achiever who was a colossal mistake. UGA, get a real coach. Pansies are flowers.

My biggest complaint with Jacksonville is our bus has a longer drive to the Atlanta airport than the Gators’ bus drives to the game. We lose one day of practice that week, and we never look sharp in execution, especially in the red zone. See 2002 and 2003. 2003 was abysmal. We ran the ball for 195 yards and still lost? Still wonder how.

I would build a stadium on Hutchinson Island. That would be one of the best sporting venues in the Southeast, but the population is not nearly big enough to support it. Hell, what is Jacksonville going to do when the Jags leave? Jacksonville cannot support a pro team.
