ATHENS — Cornerback Branden Smith has been cleared academically and will rejoin Georgia’s football team Friday, coach Mark Richt said.
“He is academically in good standing for the 2010 season,” Richt said Thursday night. “So we are fired up.”
Richt declined to go into detail about Smith’s academic situation.
Smith, a sophomore from Atlanta, left the team last week and stayed away while awaiting word on whether he would be cleared to enroll in fall-semester classes. The issue was related not to Smith’s grade-point average but to a placement-test score.
Smith is expected to contribute to Georgia’s team in all facets of the game: defense (as a possible starter at cornerback), offense (as an occasional threat at tailback or wide receiver) and special teams (as a kick returner).
Despite missing eight practices, “I don’t think he’ll be too far behind,” Richt said.
Smith seems pleased with how the situation worked out.
“Will be back in Athens tomorrow,” he posted on Twitter late Thursday afternoon.
“Georgia is on my mind,” he tweeted an hour later.
Banks ‘retires’ as player
Backup safety Quintin Banks, whose career has been frequently derailed by knee injuries, will forgo his senior season.
Banks “has basically decided to retire from football,” Richt said Thursday. “His knees have just not allowed him to move the way he’s accustomed to moving and move well enough to compete at this level.”
Richt said Banks will have surgery “and try to get it all cleaned up” before he graduates. In the meantime, he will stay involved with the team and “help us coach,” Richt said.
“He has tremendous knowledge, tremendous love for this team and his teammates. He’s got a wonderful spirit,” Richt said. “Quintin is exactly what we’re looking for when it comes to a good Bulldog.
“As a head coach, you hope that when a young man walks out the door he’s ready for life. And Quintin is absolutely ready. He’s turned into a really fine man, and anybody looking for a tremendous employee and future leader, Quintin is that.”
Between injuries, Banks has played in only five games in the past two seasons.
And a few other things . . .

Mr. Smith is doing what each of you only wish you could. Suiting up to play for an elite NCAA program. Doing what he loves in front of 92,000 rabid fean every Saturday. And I’ll beat you to the punch UF and GT fools, we are elite. Not having a championship doesn’t make us any less of a great program. We earn more money than 95% of the NCAA programs out there. We’re consistent and things are looking up. We’re on the verge of being back to the glory days and you can argue the point until the cows come home. Us true Dawg fans can sense it. We can feel the change in Athens. Come December, the Dawg nation will be strong and proud. Bank it.

i’m glad he got this resolved and is in good standing. i’m tired of people coming on here and making “grade fix” comments, calling this kid a dummy and making assertions about our athletes receiving preferential treatment. the comments are not only malicious but ignorant. i actually taught as a graduate student at UGA for a couple of years and had the good fortune to have several athletes (including football players) in my class. as a group, they worked as hard or harder than the average student, were respectful and attentive, and (this deserves emphasis) they DID THE WORK or they failed the class–just like the other kids.
i’m well aware of jan kemp and jim harrick jr., but these embarrassing exceptions obscure the fact that, in general, student-athletes (at uga, tech, wherever) work extremely hard in and out of the classroom and deserve a lot of respect for what they do. so, i’m pleased to see branden get his affairs in order, and it’s shameful for grown men to call 19 year old kids dummies or claim (with no evidence) that there is grade-fixing going on.
Idiots...all of you

Sven Ottke — Your logic is breathtakingly stupid….so, let’s get this straight….In your world, UGA has no compunction about fixing grades…got it, glad that is settled…now, pray tell, why would they have not done this prior to starting practice?…you know, so there is no missed practice time…no public awareness….see where this is going moron? UGA FANS: I don’t understand why ya’ll didnt go after CAMERON NEWTON the second time around. He’s from right down the street and is a physical freak.6′6″, 250lbs,with a rocket for an arm. Led his JUCO team to national title. Best Juco QB in America, and went to Atlanta Westlake!! I just don’t understand Richt and Bobo. This kid’s a physical freak and you stand by and let him go to Auburn. It’s like Richt and Bobo think they’re too good for him. Seems like a great kid that’s learned from his mistake. His older brother is in the NFL and apparently served as a positive role model for him. I just don’t get it. Could it be something else UGA fans. It’s decisions like these that get you beat. Make our best recruit in a limited signing class for us as it was miss 8 critical Fall Practices focusing on how we are going to defend the pass this year, when he only got to play for 14 tackles and only 2 pass break-ups last year with 4.28 speed, 35 inch vertical leap standing nearly 6 feet tall, Consensus All-America 5-Star player who has made Two (2) Athletic Director Academic Honor Rolls in 2 previous Semesters out of 3 requiring at least a 3.0 both Semesters, and then we started focusing on Special Teams of which he is such a huge producer not only in the classroom but on the field ?
I just don’t understand how a year later, he had to what ? Re-pass an entrance exam ? Classes start Monday. Registration is tomorrow. And, the LAME PRESS cannot explain what the hell is going on that this # 1 Jersey, whose older brother, Darrell Hackney, is the Denver Broncos NFL back-up Quarterback has to pass an entrance exam a year later.
LAME Tim Tucker Bloody Lame on the issue.
Branden Smith is an EDUCATION MAJOR.
He had a 61-yard run for a Touchdown and a 48-yard Kick-Off Return in the Win over South Carolina last year.
Now he has to pass an entrance exam Tim Tucker ?
What kind of reporting is that ?

Darrell Hackney, Branden Smith’s older brother, you might remember ?
2003 he came into Sanford Stadium and lost 13-16 to Georgia as the Starting Quarterback for UAB. He has all the UAB Quarterback records.
David Greene our Quarterback that day.
16-13 over him. At the end of the game, it was STILL IN DOUBT.
I can’t find where Darrell is now out of Douglass in Atlanta. He lost his spot with the NFL Denver Broncos to Kyle Orton and hasn’t returned. He redshirted 2001 at UAB, and graduated the same year DJ Shockley did.

Jan Kemp must be looking down and shaking her head. It’s just a small thing. It’s just academics. It’s just about a young man wanting to play football and good for him if he’s on a path to graduation. But, if he’s having to pass a placement test this does no bode well for him in making the grade long term does it? Here ’s hoping someone down there in Athens can perhaps do their job and see that this kid doesn’t have to face this again and will take care of his transcripts in the more discreet fashion of which we have come to expect from the football operation that functions as a criminal enterprise.

This the the first time that I can remember that we (UGA) haven’t had any season ending injuries or player suspended for the first two or three games. Ok, Tavarres King is suspended one game but ULL are not Oklahoma St or S Car (first two games of the last two seasons). Maybe Richts practice ideas to keep the players fresh and build them up in the classroom will pay off. Plus the addition of high-level shortened practices, quality is always better than quantity and the games are only 60 minutes. CMR could be starting a new brand of coaching in CFB and I hope it pays off. It has so far.

One of your prized recruits Shannon Brown, the lb prospect from Adel, GA did not attend summer school and is about to get kicked off his high school football team for missing practices. So you can cross him off the list because he is going to Valdosta State if he can even get in there. What a weird coaching staff you have to recruit this guy.

And by doing so allow this physical freak to sign with one of your hated rivals. It doesn’t make since to me and I believe needs to be addressed by Richt and Bobo. Everything has to be spelled out for some folks, huh? No one said he’s ONLY taking remedial courses. He might be in honors classes in everything BUT one subject – it’s possible to have one area of weakness, like math, and to take college-level courses in everything else. So maybe he had a math placement test that was tripping him up and he’s acing everything else.
Some people need to take remediation courses in reading what folks write and not taking limited information to the extreme.

A rare NC or money makes for elite status?
August 13th, 2010
10:18 am
A rare NC does not suddenly make the program ELITE. I know this and so do Tech fans know this. They won the NC fairly and squarely ( with 5 other teams in 90 ) and they have never, ever been considered an elite program. In 91 or 92 or 93 there was no change ………..GT was GT. they were laughable post 90. Where did tech go in 91 and 92 and 93??? What bowls??? See, no forward momentum was generated by their ONE DAY of fame.
No, what determines the elite status is ………..does your program attend on a regular basis major bowls? UGA meets that requirement, even though last year they hit the Independence Bowl. Sugar Bowls ( 3 in 9 years ) and Capitol One and Outbacks, Cotton Bowls, Urange Bowls determine whether a program is elite and UGA has been in all of these, except the Cotton Bowl within the last 8-10 years.
Now, two trips to the Urange Bowl in 43 years like GT ………….. do not count and to insist that they do is well, just pathetic. That is so sad when gt fans insist on including that blow out to Florida in 67.
Finally …………..MONEY is the REAL DEAL ………if your program is flush with $$$, then the market has spoken and it has made your program an eliite program …………..UGA is one RICH SCHOOL BABY !!! UGA is second ONLY to TEXAS in money.
Remember MONEy TALKS and bull ….t walks. it is all about the money and UGA is loaded.
Now, you all have been schooled and so you public school punks go out and play with your big wheels.

Bama is in trouble this year since Saban is not playing his best offensive linemen. He has a couple of backup defensive linemen that should be starting on the offensive side of the ball. Why is that? The Tide has the potential to be a contender again this year if Nick will just wake up and play the best players.
Also, Cameron Newton was available, but Bama did not recruit him, though they may could have beaten out Auburn for him. 6-6, 250, can run like the wind, has a cannon, yet Saban is stuck with McElroy.
In addition, I am wondering why in the last recruiting class, the state of Alabama had at least 20 offensive linemen that Saban did not recruit, who signed with other schools. What is up with that?
Look, I really have Bama’s best interest at heart, and if I set the Bama depth chart, titles will follow.

I really find it amusing that there are way more Gator fans and even a few Bama fans that comment on these blog posts, but all the UGA fans do is make fun of the Tech fans. UGA is the primary land grant university in the state of Georgia and regularly attracts top 10 football recruiting classes because of its status and position in the SEC. Georgia Tech is a research-based technical institute in the ACC that regularly gets top 30 to top 40 football recruiting classes. UGA should dominate Tech every year based on recruiting alone. I love college football and hope that GT beats UGA every year, but I am also realistic and I understand that GT is not going to regularly recruit football talent to compete with UGA. That said, I’ll take our OC (Paul Johnson) over UGA’s OC (Mike Bobo) and our DC (Al Groh, Super Bowl winning DC) over UGA’s DC (Todd Grantham, 3rd choice, fired from his last DC job) any day! Superior coaching should keep us competitve against UGA for years to come. (Well at least until UGA fires Mike Bobo and then lets hope they don’t hire someone competent).

To all UGA haters- for UGA to be such an “irrelevant program” or “non-elite program” you people sure do spend a LOT of time on all things UGA.
The truth is all you haters are worried because Richt & Co. have decided to shut down the borders and Tenn, Bama, & Aub all know that’s bad news for them. Fact is there’s not enough talent in your respective states to compete without some of the state of Georgia’s finest. Take a look at those schools’ current rosters. There’s a reason you all spend so much time here trying to tear down UGA’s program. But it won’t work, momentum is building and you all know it. Techies- you’re here hoping you can steal some top talent away from the Dawgs, but it won’t work as long as you have that HS offense.
Before you haters respond – let’s get some key facts on the table:
- Alabama, Auburn & TN have a combined 35 players from the state of Georgia on their current rosters (9,18,& 8 respectfully)
- UGA has 2 from Bama and 2 from TN
- UGA has 32 players outside the state of GA
- Auburn has 52 players outside the state of AL
- Bama has 42 players outside the state of AL
- TN has 51 players outside the state of TN
- GT has 41 players outside the state of GA
- Richt and Co. have gone on record as saying they need to focus on keeping in state talent at home and have done a pretty good job.
- People hate what they fear, and all those programs fear UGA keeping more of the GA talent at home.
Hater solution: Spend as much time on UGA blogs spewing venom at the program in hopes that some of those prized state of Georgia recruits read it and decide “man, I’m not going to UGA, I think I’ll go to (insert hater school).
I did not include UF because 1. it’s pretty much a wash with GA/FL players at the respective schools 5-6, 2. much like UGA most of their players come from FL (31 outside FL).
So Fellow Dawg Fans enjoy the haters, the more we see the better we’re doing. We need to start worrying when we stop seeing them.
Haters I know this is a lot to mentally digest, so take your time and don’t hurt yourself or cramp your brain trying to come up with a quick response.

I’ve known Quintin Banks since he was in elementary school. He’s a great young man and a great student. He’s also a great artist. It’s got to be heartbreaking to him to not be able to play this year. He’s worked so hard to contribute to this team. I was extremely proud of his play at the end of the Tech game last year. CMR is not exaggerating when he says that Que is the kind of kid you want as a Bulldog. Good luck Quintin.

Smith was not a 5 star recruit so was not worthy until he took the 5 star placement test. From now on all good dawgies must pass the 5 star placement test because you cannot win unless you are 5 star certified. Only 5 star high schoolers and NFL wannabees need apply. Urban Crier we will beat you since we gonna have more 5 star’ers, by hook or by crook but don’t need to read no book – just be a 5 star. unh-huh

I am just LMAO at the guys co-opting each other’s handles. That’s pretty funny. I am on the UGA blog today, because there is nothing new on the Tech blog. Unlike what some Dawg fans have suggested, no Tech fans have any reason to feel embarassed at their team’s performance. We beat our rival in 2008, won our conference in 2009, and played a competitive game against our rival in 2009. JDawg is so proud of UGAs 9 straight 8+ win seasons. Great, good for them. We have been to a bowl for just as many seasons in a row as UGA (14 and counting, I believe) and if you look at the Bowls, you can’t really say UGA has been to significantly better ones over that stretch.
Again, I’ll gladly take Paul Johnson over Mark Richt and Mike Bobo and Al Groh over Todd Grantham anyday. Todd Grantham isn’t qualified to hold Al Groh jock starp while running a 3-4. This “high school” offense is exactly what a school like GT should be running. Why should GT try to compete for Pro style offense recruits with UGA… that would be foolish and it didn’t work under Chan Gailey.

By the way, I love how UGA fans continue to try to talk themselves into Todd Grantham, like he wasn’t their 3rd choice for DC. Can you believe that the Virginia Tech DC refused to even talk to CMR about the DC job at the MIGHTY UGA. What an insult. Virginia Tech?!?!?
Look I have no doubt that UGA’s defense will improve this year. Much like Tech’s it has no where to go but up. However, seeing that Todd Grantham got FIRED from his last DC job, I have a feeling in a couple of years when UGA’s defense doesn’t have the success of Alabama’s D, that Todd Grantham will be on the chopping block. Don’t worry though, Todd, Mike Bobo will be a scape goat long before you will.

I was wrong not reading “conference” in your reply. But I don’t have the brain cells to figure out which of the 12 SEC schools was the LAST one to forfeit (sp?) victories. We know every SEC team has been on probation many times. The SEC slogan is “If you’re not cheatin’ you’re not tryin’”.

GT Sambo-”Why should GT try to compete for Pro style offense recruits with UGA… that would be foolish and it didn’t work under Chan Gailey.”
So you actually admit that GT can’t get the same caliber athlete that UGA does, and that running a gimick offense is the only way the techies can hope to compete against UGA?
wow, at least you’re realistic, I’m just stunned you actually could admit UGA’s superiority to tech.
Thanks!

Slawdawg must have used cut and paste on that codicil. I’m loving that great case of UGA vs GT in 2008 when the bees cut down the sideline and pasted 450 yards rushing on the mutts in that landfill between those bushes. That nightmare for the mutts is about to be replayed in about 3 months.

UGA is Just Fine…
Of course I will admit that GT is not going to recruit as well as UGA. UGA is georgia’s land grant university. I will also admit that the SEC is a stronger conference than the ACC. GT is a research-focused technical institute. We are much closer to MIT academically than UGA. So I am happy with our position in the ACC and very happy when we get a top 25 recruiting class. UGA regularly gets top 10 recruiting classes, they should theoritically beat Tech every year. So you guys just be proud of your Music City, Capital One and Independence Bowls, but it sounds to me like maybe UGA isn’t living up to the expectations of its top flight recruiting classes. Again I’ll continue to take our coaches over yours any day.
And to whoever brought O’Leary into this… brilliant! What is it this year 9 DUIs and a pair of red panties for the UGA athletic department? I don’t even need to say more.

Without the “Special Admissions” programs where UGag admits
dozens of illiterate athletes like King, Ealy, Smith, etc. etc. etc.
Ugag wouldnt even be able to put a team on the field.
There was a reason why Ugag had to pay Jan Kemp $1Million
and UGag President Fred Davison was forced to resign.
Its called “academice fraud.”
Its what Ugag is. Its whaat Ugag does.
