ATHENS – Injuries have hit hard at inside linebacker for Georgia.
Four players at the position were sidelined from practice Wednesday: Akeem Dent (toe surgery last month), Marcus Dowtin (scrapes from a minor scooter accident, according to coach Mark Richt), Richard Samuel (unspecified leg injury) and Mike Gilliard (unknown injury).
No position moves are planned to shore up the position, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said after Wednesday’s practice, because none of the injuries are long-term.
“They are injuries that are a nuisance right now, but when you look at status for the first game, [the players] are probable,” Grantham said. “Because no one is out for the year or expected to miss games, I think we just stay the course.”
Samuel is expected to miss a week or two, and that “hurts him a lot,” Grantham said. “Just because he’s young as a linebacker anyway, and he basically needs reps. . . . Anytime you miss an opportunity for that, it’s going to slow you down a little bit.”
Might the missed time increase the chances of Georgia redshirting Samuel, the converted tailback, as he adjusts to defense?
“I think we’ve still got a ways to go with that,” Grantham said. “How soon he would get ready could indicate what we would do. But right now I would still plan on using him and just see how he can come along.”
Georgia currently has only three scholarship players practicing at inside linebacker: redshirt sophomore Christian Robinson, a projected starter who Grantham said “is having a great camp”; senior Akeem Hebron, who had a scrimmage-high six tackles Tuesday; and freshman Demetre Baker.
——————
Cornerback Branden Smith was absent from practice again Wednesday. He is not expected to rejoin the team until, or unless, he is cleared academically for fall semester.
Jordan Love and Sanders Commings are getting more reps at cornerback with Smith out, secondary coach Scott Lakatos said.
Lakatos on Smith’s absence: “Any time you’re missing one of your players, it’s disappointing. But whatever he’s doing –- and I don’t know any more than you guys –- I just hope everything works out and we get him back.”

Tide Roll, UGA did try and get Cam Newton but he wanted to go to Florida. You can’t get everyone. He’s now at Auburn and gearing up to kick your butt in the Iron Bowl.

Strange cats are people that root for another team that come on a blog title injuries at Dogs LB to trash talk UGA’s recruiting. Not only does it signal the individual is lacking for things to do in life but it is mindless as it does not even relate to the article and certainly does not mention Bama football in the discussion. If you want to talk recruiting then why does Bama over sign each year and then gray shirt players to get down to 85 forcing them to pay their own tuition or make them sit out another year?

Guys — I am not even sure that Turd Roll is a Bama fan….my guess is he is a Maggot troll as I never once seen him post anything on these boards that even mentions Bama….his post almost always center around UGA recruiting and who they choose to start on their OL and his comments almost always have some race baiting angle….he is a desperate and pathetic loser who has too much time on his hands

Two things they need to do. Redshirt the 19 year old Richard Samuel and make sure not neglect Grey by just letting him practice at receiver when he needs to at least run some backup QB. If not he will be set up for failure if he has to go into any game…If he is better than Hutson…he needs to be ready.

Tide Roll…I get sick and tired of having to sya this..but here goes again…you are without a doubt the classless person on these blogs…How bout asking Bama why they didn’t offer Mr. Newton…I can’t speak for the Coaches but i imagine that there would have been a big uproar over trying to sign him after the incident at Fla…Not saying the kid doesn’t deserve another chance, it is obvious by some of the schools that are taken players that have had some troubles, but the dawgs at the time before the dismissal of Zach were in pretty good shape at QB and also the dawgs do not go after alot of JUCO players normally as Coach Richt likes to have them in the program 4 or 5 years if possible…Anyway, please somehow find a little class…Even the Bama fans are trying to distance themselves from you…I don’t get your agenda, and neither does anyone else…

It’s just a matter of how it will end. A fumble against Kentucky with an “unknown” reason why it happened. An “unspecified” reason why Steve Spurrier runs on the field before kick off and kicks A.J. Green in the NADS. IF HE DOESN’T PLAY GA CAN’T WIN! How can you question the obvious? Have another Diet Coke and figure it out.

Some interesting info here…and let me say unlike others on here who throw out rumors, there is an article at Yahoo Sports.com regarding Bryce Brown of Tenn who appears to be headed for KState, but Coach Dooley is not releasing him from his scholarship…The Browns have or are appealing Tenn to release him due to family issues…It appears that the Browns may not mind discussing the recruiting issues with the NCAA and Kiffin…If i were Tenn i would just let him go…Don’t really understand why they would not release him…hes not going to another SEC school..don’t have alot of info nor do i know all the specifices, but it appears the NCAA is going to be very interested in the events…

There are some big time LBs still out there. We are recruiting Anthony Wallace out of Texas and we should make a hard run at him. He is a big time talent. We need to build more depth on both sides of the ball and I don’t see that happening. Too much talent in the country to be spending so much time recruiting kids from Georgia that don’t seem like they want to play for UGA or Tech.

Hey Roll, no college signs players. The players sign. The scholarship is bilateral. He chose to go elsewhere, just as a Alabama players have chosen to go elsewhere at times.

Welcome seriously! It’s great to see new folks take an interest in football. Have you gotten to see a game yet? They’re swell fun.
Perhaps after you’ve followed football for a few more days, you’ll see that many coaches are quite large, like much of the American population.

Sports Fan…..I don’t think it is possible to fail a remedial course? Is that not a course you take to give you help when taking a real college course? They don’t give grades for remedial courses, do they? Sort of defeats the purpose! Anyway, remedial work should be done in HS not in college for gosh sakes!

How is it a concern? Our defense was terrible last year. It may take a few years to build depth, but I have no doubt that this defense will be much improved and play harder than last years.
If our offense plays well this year, like it should, the defense simply needs to be average and just play hard the entire game. We don’t have to shut people down completely if the offense manages the game by pounding the rock. Alabama did a fantastic job of running the football last year and allowing the defense to rest so they could leave it all on the field. Alabama and Georgia will be in similar positions defensively this year with a lot of talented new guys starting.

Jan, did you hear Reggie Ball interviewed while at Tech……….600 for spelling is correct, but in Math, he couldn’t count to four…..LOL…………………..Just in case you spend your Saturday’s looking at new Star Wars games at Wal Mart, He threw the Ball out of bounds on fourth down to end possession for Tech while driving the team at the end of the game……yes, a tech man, a thinker, a true American academic hero to us all……………….Here we go…………..1……………2……………..3…………..whoops!

At Stanford Stadium, in the Tech Locker room, Reggie Ball, Sitting on a stool, beat down and tired, in the interview area, after a beat down by Georgia for the fourth time in is Tech Career, when ask if had anything to say ( or mumble in his case) looked up and said, ” It’s just a game dog”………….Yes, great words of wisdom from a worldly Tech man……………………………………………,,,,,,,………………………………….Roll forward to Grant field in 2009…. Tech’s new wonderful coach, ACC champs and all, when ask about losing to a lackluster Georgia team with a lame duck Defensive Cord…….Say’s ” we’ve got bigger fish to fry”……….Hummm, more great wisdom……………………………………………Roll back the clock, 2008,Sanford Stadium, after Tech’s Stunning 3 point crushing slaughter of a fine, well tuned Georgia team………….Johnson say’s, ” this is a great day for Tech, our Students, players, fans, founders, trainers, Janitorial staff, ground crew, families, exchange students from India and all the people of Atlanta, We’ll have rings made, please excuse me, I have a fish fry to attend” !!!!!!
