Dogs scrimmaging between the hedges

ATHENS – Georgia’s first preseason scrimmage is underway in Sanford Stadium, where about 25 of the 92,746 seats are occupied.

The practice was closed to the media after warm-ups.

Offensive lineman Cordy Glenn and wide receiver Kris Durham are not participating in the scrimmage. Will get updates from Mark Richt afterward on whether they’re injured.

On the field for the scrimmage but in green non-contact jerseys: OL Trinton Sturdivant (working his way back slowly after missing the past two seasons with knee injuries), LB Akeem Dent (toe surgery last month), S Quintin Banks (swollen knee), WR Rantavious Wooten (sprained knee) and OL A.J. Harmon (unknown injury).

Tanner Strickland appeared set to work as the No. 1 left guard in Glenn’s place.

No surprise at this point, but cornerback Branden Smith is absent from the scrimmage. He isn’t expected back with the team until, or unless, his “academic issues,” as Richt called them yesterday, are cleared.

Richt and two or three players will meet with the media to discuss the scrimmage afterward. Check back tonight for updates.

Tim, I have heard a few rumors that Branden Smith will not be back. Have you heard anything that points to these rumors?

We may not even HAVE to throw the ball this year…..We looked GOOD vs. Tech! Ealey and King can run all the way to Atl in Dec.!!!! I am so fired up! And with a revamped D I think the Dawgs could be more than scary! Bring on SC! You are next ARK!

Losing Smith wont be that much of a loss, because we never utilize players to their potential anyway

If we really wanted to pound the rock you gotta let those two sr fullbacks have a few carries….

It is comical to watch your team fall apart every year. It just seems to be issue after issue. You don’t hear about problems like these on the Flats. Its just business as usual. ACC Champs gettin’ it done. See you in Dec. doggie fans!

NerdCentral@NorthAVE- IF the ACC is so great, why did the two teams that played get dominated by their SEC Rivals. Bottomline ACC is not even close in competition to the SEC. if we played in the ACC we would be finishing top 5 every year

You don’t play in the ACC, so keep dreaming. Where’s your conference championship? Oh, you left it 5 years behind you. Face it, you are a second tier team in your own division even. I’d rather Tech lose to UGAg and still be conference champs. You really don’t have anything to brag about. You’re reaching!!

Every year there seems to be nothing good that happens for Georgia. DUI arrest bu the AD and players, transfers for discipline reasons, academic problems, injuries, it never ends. I am trying to see if we will be able to survive this off season! Losing Branden Smith will be huge for the defense. On offense, they cant just protect Murray, they have to let this guys how what he can do. I am worried about this defense. Justin Houston will have a big year and parlay it into a top 10 draft pick next season along with AJ Green.
