College Football News ranks Dogs No. 3 — in nation

Georgia’s football team holds its first scrimmage of preseason camp this afternoon in Sanford Stadium. More on that later today. Meanwhile, here’s a quick and surprising note:

College Football News is out today with its preseason national “Top Five” rankings.  No surprise who’s Nos. 1 and 2, Alabama and Ohio State, same as in the coaches’ poll last week. But look who’s No. 3:

Georgia.

The same Georgia that is No. 21 in the coaches’ poll.

The same Georgia that won’t be ranked in the Top 25 of Sports Illustrated’s College Football preview issue that hits newsstands tomorrow.

So why such a lofty and consensus-defying opinion of the Dogs from College Football News?

You can click here for the full report, but here’s part of what CFN says about the Bulldogs:

This year’s team should be back to form thanks to a deep offensive line that will be among the best in the country (if everyone stays healthy), a phenomenal linebacking corps, a strong backfield, and a future NFL star in WR A.J. Green. Throw in the best kicking game in college football, and shhhhhh … here’s your sleeper for the national title.

One spot behind Georgia in CFN’s Top 5 is . . . No. 4 Florida.

Oklahoma is No. 5.

So what do you think about this?

I’m a big dawg fan, but Georgia No.3 with a redshirt freshman QB. Get serious. 9-3 would be good. 10-2 would be great. I refuse to drink the sleeper national championship kool-aid. It’s spiked with LSD or PCP. Don’t do it.

College Football News got it wrong this time around. UGA is a Top 25 Team but ranking them #3 ahead of Florida, Oklahoma, etc is a reach until UGA performs better on the field.

We’ll see.

The raw talent has been there for the Dawgs to be a top five team since 2007, we just need the coaching and the team chemistry to kick in.

Championships are won by teams that run the ball well and play solid defense. Georgia should have its best running game in years with a deep o-line, Sr. fullbacks blocking and break away runners like Ealy and King. Having an inexperienced QB will cause the coaches to call more running plays which will be a positive. The Defense will be better as well as it could not get any worse.

A top five ranking at the end of the season is just as possible as a number 21 ranking.

My question is where is the ACC? The SEC has three of the top four.

Also, I would rather see a high ranking and then have the team meet it. The Auburn travesty worries me. For example, Ohio State will have a much easier schedule than the SEC teams. If it goes undefeated, it Georgia and Flordia will have trouble passing, no matter how good they do.

If Georgia makes it to the SECCG it will be because of one thing and one thing only; TODD GRANTHAM! SEC defenses and there coordinators are too tough for a RF QB that has never taken a game snap to beat on his own. Remember the few games McElroy went thru without throwing a TD last year? It was Bama’s D that stepped up and kept the game close enough for the running game to take over and carry the Offense.

I would just love to see Grantham go head to head with Smart in Atlanta; if Grantham can slow down Spurrier and Co. we just may see UGA in the SECCG.

Why should this be a surprise? UGA returns a TON of talent and upgrades in defensive coaching, scheme, and at QB

Why should it be outlandish for UGA to be #3

Florida is having to replace almost every starter and certainly every starter of significance, have very little experience, AND YET they automatically get a pass to the top 3?!?!?!

WHY?

if any other team had to replace soooooo many crucial players as Florida, they would not even be ranked!!!!!!!

I agree, I think once Murray gets some confidence in him, we will be hard to stop. We’ve got energy this year, and the defense is going to be fun to watch. It’s hard for another team to throw a touchdown, when their recievers are jammed at the line, and we’ve got justin houston running at the QB. Somebody is going to throw an interception.

Somebody finally put the parts together and got it right. Barring injury, I think that we can progress through this years schedule strong as all getout. The games later in the season may feature teams that have gotten stronger as the year progresses. Some have the talent to catch up and it will make for interesting games. Our defense has to show up big vs Ark. Our offense can score on them on a regular basis. That game will come down to our possessions times to lower their scoring. Stopping them cold twice during the game can deliver the game to us through possession.

Fu will play like Aub….hit for hit and the last possession score will be the ball game for both teams. It will certainly be interesting.

I will wait and see how we do against South Carolina. Then if we blitz Mallet all day UGA will beat Arkansas . Tenn. needs a year or two after one of the biggest messes I have ever seen for a team. I don’t like Tenn. very much but as the saying does ” I wouldn’t wish that situation on my worst enemy ” so I don’t think they are a factor this year . So UGA could very realistically be undefeated going into the Florida game. The game that UGA better take seriously is with Auburn. Top 10 finish would be nice.

All depends on Bobo. If he is no more creative than the last two years, then 9-4. If he’s picked the brains of some NFL types this off-season, watched film of real OCs, learned how to retain momentum, instead of handing it to the opponent (see Tech) by being satisfied with three-and-outs, learned that the playbook actually has plays for 3rd and 12 (other than a draw play), learned that when he trots Branden Smith in, it is permissable to use him as a decoy, then maybe …….maybe, a top ten final ranking.

The bottom line is, Aaron Murray and our vaunted O-Line will be only as good as Mike Bobo is.

What this implies is that Alabama will go undefeated and beat Georgia in the SEC Championship game and Ohio State in the BCS CG.

Georgia will go 12-0 and lose to Alabama in the SEC CG and win the Sugar Bowl against an undefeated team, perhaps Boise State.

Oklahoma either a) goes undefeated in the regular season and wins the Big-12 CG and loses in their bowl game, or b) is 12-1 entering their bowl game and beats a lesser opponent than Georgia plays.

the talent and potential are there, always has been…it depends on how quickly the 3-4 clicks for the D and how smart Murray is with the ball (Bobo needs to play him in such a manner that will allow him to succeed…read: creative running game to take pressure off of Murray and throwing)…but I’m pretty sure this has been said many, many times before. The key player for Georgia is AARON MURRAY… so goes the QB, so goes the team. See last year for further details. If Murray can dramatically reduce the turnovers from last year, we’ll be a force. We’ve got better DB’s than last year and a much better DC.

One more thing about this bashing of Mike Bobo. I have been following his career since he was a high school quarterback in Thomasville. His father George, was an outstanding high school coach, and Mike is the God son and named after, Mike Hodges, the legendary high school coach at West Rome and Thomasville. Later on he went on to be the offensive coordinator at Gerogia Southern, after winning several state championships.

Mike Bobo has been around and participated on more winning football teams then anybody I know.

He is extremely cereberal. Has a great understanding of the game, and how to motivate young men to play it.

Talk to any knowlegeble football person that studys the game, and they will tell you the same thing.

Is he perfect? No, but I can’t think of anyone else better to be our offensive coordinator. In fact the biggest threat I see, is that someone is going to see him as the head coach material that he is, and hire him away from us in the not too distant future.

If we go with our strengths, we could win every game. Problems come when CMR tries to make everyone happy by giving them touches. Remember #1 last year? Kid can run like the wind, but he clearly wasn’t ready to be thrown into the fire, but he was promised playing time on both sides of the ball. Led to turnovers…..

Part of the sloppy play comes from trying to feed every DAWG on every drive.

For us to win, I think we need to scale it back a bit. Yes, fewer catches for our uber talented group of TE’s and WR’s, but is our goal to win, or feed egos?

I’m not surprised at all. Folks, UGA has athletes 2 and 3 deep at every position! But now we have coaches who demand respect and accountability. Now top 3 may be a tad high but there is no doubt we could beat half of the top 10 teams in the country with relative ease. Look for UGA to be undefeated in Jax. After that I won’t make any predictions.

Why don’t these guys give us some lottery numbers as well. Besides stirring up blog pages pre-season rankings don’t mean squat. Everything that was said about UGA was true but there was a lot of “ifs” included.

If we stay healthy, if we protect Aaron, if the new defense gells, we could be formidable. The last couple of years we haven’t played with any emotion. We got to play mentally tougher and adjust faster (see Tenn rollout last year) The offense has to be less predictible and we have got to get the ball to AJ.

We could be real good and it all starts by beating SC in Columbia. They always play their best game of the year against us. We gotta go in there and punch them in the mouth. That will be a massive confidence builder and we will then unload on Arkansas. For all the tek fans on this blog. It doesn’t matter what we’re rated we’re gonna crush tek in Athens.

Tech has 3 wins and 8 losses. Their 3 wins were over Stanford (Seattle Bowl 2001), Tulsa (Humanitarian Bowl Jan 2004) and Syracuse (Champs Sports Bowl Dec. 2004). Not exactly a stellar record against great competition.

Georgia record during the same years was 9 wins and 2 losses.
Georgia’s wins were against FSU (Sugar Bowl) , Purdue (Capital One), Wisconsin (Outback) Virginia Tech (Chic-fil-A).
Hawaii (Sugar) Michigan State (Capital One) and Texas A&M (Independence).
I think it is obvious who has the best record against the best competition.

GT is not irrelevant, but did it ever occur to you that Tech fans inspire responses like that b/c the claim silly nonsense like “GT is better than UGA” and the like when by any measure, bowl game wins, BCS wins, conference titles, overall wins, top 20 finishes, top 10 finishes, etc. UGA is superior to GT. I’m totally fine with this pick. I think it’s great to see the Dawgs get some love and I’ve been saying for a while that we’re a sleeper team for the NC. The single biggest reason is that we’ll improve over the course of the year. I also think that our two biggest question marks(D and OB) could be strengths of the team by midseason.
We will beat SC and Arkansas with a run game and special teams. After that the hurdle is Florida, who is over-rated(for good reason) and the SECC game but I think we’ll be clicking by that point in the season. Just think about how many games we lost last year because of how bad the defense and QB play was. A little bit of improvment and we win 10 games.

If only the fact supported your claims. We are tied for the 2nd most SEC titles in the last 10 years, have more total wins that any SEC other than UF in the last 10 years, been to 3 BCS games, won 2 are 8-2 in bowl games and have 1 of the 5 best records in the country over the last 10 years. We have not done well against FL and have not won a NC. Who cares if we are replacing 9 starters. Saban brings in the best!! Rolando was the only 4 star or higher player on defense that we lost. Sorry but UF will run the East for years!!! Get use to it. Brantley is a stud youll see. And they recruit just as well if not better than bama. UF vs BAMA in the SEC championship get use to it. It will be 3 yrs in a row. Plus Auburn is better than UGA. I bet UGA finishes 23rd at best.

You got to love all the tech fans so tired of UGA fans claiming we are going to win it all, every year. Really? That happens huh? How about saying something informed or just please don’t bother. That just sounds like a childish rant.

And if you are going to insist on living your football fandom through the UGA blogs, at least have the coutesy of actually reading what the folks that belong in here say. It’s not that, I can assure you.

In fact despite the overwhelming percentages of UGA fans scoffing at this #3 business you STILL complain we are claiming we are going to win it all? childish , just childish.

UGA is in a recruiting hotbed and squanders talent. Satisfied with the “also-ran” title. I’ll never forget when you campaigned to play in the NC game after not winning your division, let alone your conference!

If someone has mentioned this I apologize. Polls, particularly preseason polls are generated by and for gambling and not much else. Well thinks for connecting the dots for me, bitter. The whole point of bringing up the series record is to go ahead and get you to throw out the past. The difference between AU-UGA and UGA-UF is that UF has had your number for 20 years. 2006 and 2007, yes, were especially painful losses to the dogs but even in our two recent mediocre years we have played you closely. Meanwhile, UF has beaten you like their red-headed stepchild (Joe Cox?). Funny, because Auburn didn’t have too much trouble against UF the last time they were on the schedule…

Billy I quite agree. Number 1 sounds about right to me. Only a loser enters the season thinking they’ll end up number 3. Georgia is better than last year. Flordia and Alabama will not be I don’t care what their fans say. Oh I forgot, Ga. Tech won’t be as good as last year either. No passing game what-so-ever. The only legit reciever they had left town. That and the fact their QB couldn’t hit a wide open elephant will make it much easier to fixiate on the Tech running game. Don’t get me wrong I will most assuredly be rooting for Tech on all but one weekend. After all I am from Georgia and I root for all Georgia teams. Yea Georgia won’t be no. 3, they’ll be no. 1.

Coastal Dog – Good point. The fans are bystanders in this. It’s all a fantasy. The time when anything counts is when those guys line up across from the other team and are determined that they are going to do their jobs to the utmost of their abilities. They have to do it for every play in every game, regardless of how the last game turned out. The coaches have to inspire and demand of them to do it again and again.

I believe that the Dawgs have some young players in “key” positions. Depending on how well the rest of the team covers their weaknesses, and how quickly these young players develope, the Dawgs have an opportunity to catch many teams off guard.

Happened again in 2006. Dogs went 11-2 finished #2 in country.

BOTH have highly recruited and touted QB’s
One problem, the media loves Florida so therefore they must be better right?

Dawg Stephen, the perception is that they have a better coach, x’s and o’s wise. Also the records would indicate that. A couple of years ago I stated CMR was a work in progress, well he’s regressed since then with some of the best talent in the country. He hasn’t learned to coach a team to it’s strengths IMO. That’s why the media loves the Gators over the Dawgs.

If CMR coaches this team and game plans to it’s strengths, and further sticks with the game plan, we could have a good, possibly great year. I will reserve and withhold comments about what I fear will happen offensively until it does. The success of this season rest squarely on CMR’s shoulders and how he chooses to coach this team.

My wife is not from GA, but Hawaii and thinks I’m a nut for followin’ my teams year round. When I was a liitle boy in Columbus, it took my hours to get to my best friends house and he only lived about a 20 minute walk away.

On the way, I’d sit on about 3 front porch swings, drink a good 4-5 sweet teas (I liked sun tea best) and talk to old folks about how them DAWGS were gonna do this year. Couple of those geezers were actually Auburn fans, but there was always a mutual respect and more of a partnership feel than a rivalry. Maybe cuz Aub is so close to columbus, I don’t know.

At any rate, the stuff I see here from Tech, Fla, and Ala fans is abhorrent. This is an amazing game that gives opportunities to kids who might never make it away from Grandma’s house, without football.

I will always have tremendous respect for Auburn University and the way they treated me when I used to watch games there as a kid. (Good buddy’s dad used to play there, so I watched a lot of that old wishbone during the Dye era.)

Too bad I didn’t have a friend from UGA at that time.

We should be gentlemen and behave in a well-mannered fashion. Regardless of who we root for, we are all in, or from the south, and we have an obligation to display our home trainin’ and behave in a more civil manner.

GT, Tenn, Ala, or Fla, will have respect reciprocated…………..

I said this before

Why should the Dawgs NOT be ranked #3 when the Gators are consistantly ranked too high based on nothing

The Gators have to replace:

Tim Tebow
Carlos Dunlap
Aaron Hernandez
Major Wright
Joe Hayden
Brandon Spikes
Markice Pauncy
Jermaine Cunnigham
Riley Cooper
Dustin Doe
Brandon James
David Nelson
Ryan Stamper
and 2 other offensive lineman

while Georgia returns 7 thats right 7 guys who’ve started on the O-line and therefore 13 offensive starters (since Ealey and King play equal) and upgrade at QB even though he is a RS freshman AND they have upgraded defensive coaching and scheme and have plenty of returning talent on the defensive side

If one were objective and not giving UNPROVEN guys at Florida a free pass to the national championship because they play for the Gators, then based on the FACTS and proven experienced personnel, you would HAVE TO rank UGA higher!!!!

Interesting, I thought they had too much talent to be ranked outside the top 15 but 3 is maybe a bit high. It’s asking a lot of a frosh QB to step right in and play with limited mistakes. It doesn’t matter how great Green is if Murray hasn’t got his timing down and can’t work a progression and look off defenders. My prediction is Murray will go to the well too many times with Green and the best SEC defenders will eat his lunch if he does. Best we can hope for is the ground game is the principal strength and it opens up some easy play-action throws to Green and others with some separation.

DDawg411

Georgia should have been 10-3 last year, a one touchdown loss to LSU was an abortion by the ref who flagged UGA for excessive celebration and the loss to Kentucky was an abortion by the team who tried everything it could (and finally succeeded) to hand the game to Kentucky with penalties and miscues. The other losses Georgia was overmatched. Murray is a better qb as a freshman than Cox was as a senior, Cox was a headcase that should have continued to hold a clipboard. I think Georgia loses 2 games this year but misses the SEC Championship because of a close head-to-head loss with a 2 SEC loss Florida team. Write that down.

The Dawgs will have to prove themselves week after week in order to make a statement to the SEC and to the rest of the college football nation. I predict that Murray will exceed expectations with every game and that AJ Green will have a spectacular season. #3 in the nation? I doubt that, but the Dawgs certainly have the capability to be ranked in the top ten if they hit in all cylinders. I believe that they will have enough games under their belt on 10/30 to seriously compete with UF. The SC game will likely be another close one, but I believe that the Dawgs can pull out a win. UGA will be a serious competitor in the coming years if Murray lives up to hype and that we continue to build depth in our O and D-lines.

Dawgs are better than no. 21– especially when the same people rank North Carolina no. 18. UNC has done–let’s see– nothing. Well, they have lost to rival NC State every year.

Georgia is probably a 10-15 team– which ain’t bad. Could be an 8-12 with some breaks.
