College Football News ranks Dogs No. 3 — in nation

Georgia’s football team holds its first scrimmage of preseason camp this afternoon in Sanford Stadium. More on that later today. Meanwhile, here’s a quick and surprising note:

College Football News is out today with its preseason national “Top Five” rankings.  No surprise who’s Nos. 1 and 2, Alabama and Ohio State, same as in the coaches’ poll last week. But look who’s No. 3:

Georgia.

The same Georgia that is No. 21 in the coaches’ poll.

The same Georgia that won’t be ranked in the Top 25 of Sports Illustrated’s College Football preview issue that hits newsstands tomorrow.

So why such a lofty and consensus-defying opinion of the Dogs from College Football News?

You can click here for the full report, but here’s part of what CFN says about the Bulldogs:

This year’s team should be back to form thanks to a deep offensive line that will be among the best in the country (if everyone stays healthy), a phenomenal linebacking corps, a strong backfield, and a future NFL star in WR A.J. Green. Throw in the best kicking game in college football, and shhhhhh … here’s your sleeper for the national title.

One spot behind Georgia in CFN’s Top 5 is . . . No. 4 Florida.

Oklahoma is No. 5.

So what do you think about this?

UGA has 4 and 5-star players and a 1-star head coach. That, my friends, is called a fatal flaw…

Snoop Dawg,

Don’t forget that those 4- and 5-star players become 2- and 3-stars the instant they enter Clarke County.

Richt is a nice guy, but he really underperforms.

Coach Smith, no one outside of the Georgia state line mentions the Dawgs and Gators in the same breath. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid boss, Murray for the Heisman!

Before all you puppy fans start pumping your chest because you have found a poll that has your pups rated higher than GT, condsider this…
The # 13 team is North Carolina, with a projected record of 6-6. That, in itself, discredits the CFN rankings. The only people who care about the CFN rankings are puppy fans that have finally found a poll that has Tech lower than your pups.

the CFN rankings are nothing more than an embarrassment, and puppy poop.

Interesting, I thought they had too much talent to be ranked outside the top 15 but 3 is maybe a bit high. It’s asking a lot of a frosh QB to step right in and play with limited mistakes. It doesn’t matter how great Green is if Murray hasn’t got his timing down and can’t work a progression and look off defenders. My prediction is Murray will go to the well too many times with Green and the best SEC defenders will eat his lunch if he does. Best we can hope for is the ground game is the principal strength and it opens up some easy play-action throws to Green and others with some separation.

Georgia should have been 10-3 last year, a one touchdown loss to LSU was an abortion by the ref who flagged UGA for excessive celebration and the loss to Kentucky was an abortion by the team who tried everything it could (and finally succeeded) to hand the game to Kentucky with penalties and miscues. The other losses Georgia was overmatched. Murray is a better qb as a freshman than Cox was as a senior, Cox was a headcase that should have continued to hold a clipboard. I think Georgia loses 2 games this year but misses the SEC Championship because of a close head-to-head loss with a 2 SEC loss Florida team. Write that down.

The Dawgs will have to prove themselves week after week in order to make a statement to the SEC and to the rest of the college football nation. I predict that Murray will exceed expectations with every game and that AJ Green will have a spectacular season. #3 in the nation? I doubt that, but the Dawgs certainly have the capability to be ranked in the top ten if they hit in all cylinders. I believe that they will have enough games under their belt on 10/30 to seriously compete with UF. The SC game will likely be another close one, but I believe that the Dawgs can pull out a win. UGA will be a serious competitor in the coming years if Murray lives up to hype and that we continue to build depth in our O and D-lines.

Sounds good to me. A little lofty, perhaps, but let’s see how the team gels and the new defensive scheme works out. In any case, Go Dogs!

Arron Murray will go down as the greatest QB in UGA history to this point. I am a rabid Dawg fan and watched thiskid play in Tampa, super athlete,& super smart. This is UGA’s Peyton Manning. This team is completely able to win the national championship, especially with our schedule. CFN got this one right.

Dawgs are better than no. 21– especially when the same people rank North Carolina no. 18. UNC has done–let’s see– nothing. Well, they have lost to rival NC State every year.

Georgia is probably a 10-15 team– which ain’t bad. Could be an 8-12 with some breaks.
