College Football News ranks Dogs No. 3 — in nation

Georgia’s football team holds its first scrimmage of preseason camp this afternoon in Sanford Stadium. More on that later today. Meanwhile, here’s a quick and surprising note:

College Football News is out today with its preseason national “Top Five” rankings.  No surprise who’s Nos. 1 and 2, Alabama and Ohio State, same as in the coaches’ poll last week. But look who’s No. 3:

Georgia.

The same Georgia that is No. 21 in the coaches’ poll.

The same Georgia that won’t be ranked in the Top 25 of Sports Illustrated’s College Football preview issue that hits newsstands tomorrow.

So why such a lofty and consensus-defying opinion of the Dogs from College Football News?

You can click here for the full report, but here’s part of what CFN says about the Bulldogs:

This year’s team should be back to form thanks to a deep offensive line that will be among the best in the country (if everyone stays healthy), a phenomenal linebacking corps, a strong backfield, and a future NFL star in WR A.J. Green. Throw in the best kicking game in college football, and shhhhhh … here’s your sleeper for the national title.

One spot behind Georgia in CFN’s Top 5 is . . . No. 4 Florida.

Oklahoma is No. 5.

So what do you think about this?

I agree, I think once Murray gets some confidence in him, we will be hard to stop. We’ve got energy this year, and the defense is going to be fun to watch. It’s hard for another team to throw a touchdown, when their recievers are jammed at the line, and we’ve got justin houston running at the QB. Somebody is going to throw an interception.

not sure about 3 but i know were better than 21. If the running game is dominant and Murray only has to throw 10-15 times a game you never know. the defense can’t be any worse than last years

Somebody finally put the parts together and got it right. Barring injury, I think that we can progress through this years schedule strong as all getout. The games later in the season may feature teams that have gotten stronger as the year progresses. Some have the talent to catch up and it will make for interesting games. Our defense has to show up big vs Ark. Our offense can score on them on a regular basis. That game will come down to our possessions times to lower their scoring. Stopping them cold twice during the game can deliver the game to us through possession.

Fu will play like Aub….hit for hit and the last possession score will be the ball game for both teams. It will certainly be interesting.

#3? Serious? Phenomenal linebacking corp? Really? Decent enough but pheneomenal? Freshman qb? This magazine must have a UGA connection. plain and simple.

I will wait and see how we do against South Carolina. Then if we blitz Mallet all day UGA will beat Arkansas . Tenn. needs a year or two after one of the biggest messes I have ever seen for a team. I don’t like Tenn. very much but as the saying does ” I wouldn’t wish that situation on my worst enemy ” so I don’t think they are a factor this year . So UGA could very realistically be undefeated going into the Florida game. The game that UGA better take seriously is with Auburn. Top 10 finish would be nice.

Coach Smith
You amaze me with your vast knowledge of the Florida football program. You, as most of the leghumpers fans, live in fantasyland. Our no name starters will be ready to administer the annual beatdown of the leghumpers in Jax again this October 30. Georgia– the biggest drum in Dixie.

All depends on Bobo. If he is no more creative than the last two years, then 9-4. If he’s picked the brains of some NFL types this off-season, watched film of real OCs, learned how to retain momentum, instead of handing it to the opponent (see Tech) by being satisfied with three-and-outs, learned that the playbook actually has plays for 3rd and 12 (other than a draw play), learned that when he trots Branden Smith in, it is permissable to use him as a decoy, then maybe …….maybe, a top ten final ranking.

The bottom line is, Aaron Murray and our vaunted O-Line will be only as good as Mike Bobo is.

Let’s see: Best OL in SEC, possibly the country. Best WR in the nation. Two up and coming RB’s that will only improve. A QB that will only have to manage the game, protect the ball and not play super hero. A defense that will be difficult for oppenents to figure out. A kicking game second to none. Yeah, it is possible. Go Dawgs!

Grantham is molding a masterpiece in athens that “will” be the best defense in the country. It will be better than Kirby Dumb’s defense. Grantham is one of the Architect’s of this if not the Architect. Wiki Todd Grantham if you don’t trust me.

The good news is that no one has seen our defense yet so they don’t know what to call… Bad news is that no one has seen our freshman quarterback so I perdict that if we can run the ball and keep the passing to 3rd down conversions with the ocassional deep ball to green, we’ll be just fine. Number 3 is sssssstrechingggggg it!

What this implies is that Alabama will go undefeated and beat Georgia in the SEC Championship game and Ohio State in the BCS CG.

Georgia will go 12-0 and lose to Alabama in the SEC CG and win the Sugar Bowl against an undefeated team, perhaps Boise State.

Oklahoma either a) goes undefeated in the regular season and wins the Big-12 CG and loses in their bowl game, or b) is 12-1 entering their bowl game and beats a lesser opponent than Georgia plays.

Is Mike Bozo still offensive coordinator? Then we have no shot at a NC. When Jim Doogan is your role model and teacher, you have issues. Richt should have fired Bozo last year, he didn’t and he will pay the price.

The problem with that scenario I outlined is that a) Florida has to lose 2 games (Alabama during the regular season, b) Oklahoma has a loss going into the bowl game and loses the bowl, or c) no team ends up undefeated.

Everybody, including Kentucky fans, who think they beat Georgia last year did not beat Georgia. They beat some team calling itself Georgia trying to find an identity. It will be very different this year. This year you are playing GEORGIA.

the talent and potential are there, always has been…it depends on how quickly the 3-4 clicks for the D and how smart Murray is with the ball (Bobo needs to play him in such a manner that will allow him to succeed…read: creative running game to take pressure off of Murray and throwing)…but I’m pretty sure this has been said many, many times before. One thing I think the coaches need to do better with is adjusting to what the other team is doing during the game…but that’s another topic.

Bill Parcells famously said “If ifs and buts were candy and nuts we’d all have a Merry Christmas”. Well maybe I’m looking for Santa Claus, but these folks at CFN are not off in their analysis. Had Stafford and Moreno stayed, and Tebow left, what would last year have looked like?

They did and he didn’t so who knows, but timing is the major component of luck.

Stranger things have happened, and this could be the year.

Now #3, please! Keep us unranked or at #21. We will see happens by years end. It will be all about the defense. If they can gel a top 10 finish is not out of the question. It’s a tall order. I’m ready to get it going! Go Dawgs

#3 in the nation? I don’t think so, however IF we beat USC and Arkansas then we’ve got a shot to have a very good season. In this scenario I think we’d be the odds on favorite to win the East.

The key player for Georgia is AARON MURRAY… so goes the QB, so goes the team. See last year for further details. If Murray can dramatically reduce the turnovers from last year, we’ll be a force. We’ve got better DB’s than last year and a much better DC.

Put a W next to our name when we play Tech. GT is our biatches!!!

Read the fine print on the CFN rankings. It is based on how good the teams are *going into the season*. The strength of schedules are not taken into account in the ranking.

Here is a sample of the oddity of that method:

Team______Ranking__W-L (projected)

UNC________ #13____6-6

Georgia Tech_#40____8-4

Cal________ #34_____7-5

Washington__#35____4-8

One more thing about this bashing of Mike Bobo. I have been following his career since he was a high school quarterback in Thomasville. His father George, was an outstanding high school coach, and Mike is the God son and named after, Mike Hodges, the legendary high school coach at West Rome and Thomasville. Later on he went on to be the offensive coordinator at Gerogia Southern, after winning several state championships.

Mike Bobo has been around and participated on more winning football teams then anybody I know.

He is extremely cereberal. Has a great understanding of the game, and how to motivate young men to play it.

Talk to any knowlegeble football person that studys the game, and they will tell you the same thing.

Is he perfect? No, but I can’t think of anyone else better to be our offensive coordinator. In fact the biggest threat I see, is that someone is going to see him as the head coach material that he is, and hire him away from us in the not too distant future.
