College Football News ranks Dogs No. 3 — in nation

Georgia’s football team holds its first scrimmage of preseason camp this afternoon in Sanford Stadium. More on that later today. Meanwhile, here’s a quick and surprising note:

College Football News is out today with its preseason national “Top Five” rankings.  No surprise who’s Nos. 1 and 2, Alabama and Ohio State, same as in the coaches’ poll last week. But look who’s No. 3:

Georgia.

The same Georgia that is No. 21 in the coaches’ poll.

The same Georgia that won’t be ranked in the Top 25 of Sports Illustrated’s College Football preview issue that hits newsstands tomorrow.

So why such a lofty and consensus-defying opinion of the Dogs from College Football News?

You can click here for the full report, but here’s part of what CFN says about the Bulldogs:

This year’s team should be back to form thanks to a deep offensive line that will be among the best in the country (if everyone stays healthy), a phenomenal linebacking corps, a strong backfield, and a future NFL star in WR A.J. Green. Throw in the best kicking game in college football, and shhhhhh … here’s your sleeper for the national title.

One spot behind Georgia in CFN’s Top 5 is . . . No. 4 Florida.

Oklahoma is No. 5.

So what do you think about this?

Way too lofty – new defense & 2 freshman QB’s, playing in the hardest conference in America? Let’s be realistic here…

I’m a big dawg fan, but Georgia No.3 with a redshirt freshman QB. Get serious. 9-3 would be good. 10-2 would be great. I refuse to drink the sleeper national championship kool-aid. It’s spiked with LSD or PCP. Don’t do it.

College Football News got it wrong this time around. UGA is a Top 25 Team but ranking them #3 ahead of Florida, Oklahoma, etc is a reach until UGA performs better on the field.

CFN kind of has a crush on UGA…they’ve always overrated us. I’d rather everyone just put us around 20-25 and let us sneak up on people.

As much as I would love this to be true, we are nowhere near a number 3 ranking. So, no. Not biting on this one.

We’ll see.

The raw talent has been there for the Dawgs to be a top five team since 2007, we just need the coaching and the team chemistry to kick in.

Championships are won by teams that run the ball well and play solid defense. Georgia should have its best running game in years with a deep o-line, Sr. fullbacks blocking and break away runners like Ealy and King. Having an inexperienced QB will cause the coaches to call more running plays which will be a positive. The Defense will be better as well as it could not get any worse.

A top five ranking at the end of the season is just as possible as a number 21 ranking.

Could happen…if we can get by SC and Arkansas. We always get a patsy in the bowl games (except WVA), so 12-1 or 11-2 might be enough. Anyway, I’m sick of the Braves and ready for football.

There is no way UGA is better than Tech. Where is Tech in the rankings? I hate Athens and everything about it. Why can’t I get a date with an actual girl?

My question is where is the ACC? The SEC has three of the top four.

Also, I would rather see a high ranking and then have the team meet it. The Auburn travesty worries me. For example, Ohio State will have a much easier schedule than the SEC teams. If it goes undefeated, it Georgia and Flordia will have trouble passing, no matter how good they do.

Not sure how the Dawgs could be ranked that high when every other publication has them in the 20’s..Strange but bold. I like it though.

Why don’t you peddle your POS product somewhere else? You’re maybe one step above a person who links singles sites. Just a complete douche.

I think UGA could sneak up on a lot of people, but its very rare for a freshman QB to lead a team to a NC.

Easy to be optimistic about this season. But, after we see what Murray does at South Carolina and how we do the next game with Arkansas will tell us to really expect. If we’re 3-0 then I will be excited.

I agree with all the points except….”phenomenal linebacking corps” seriously? We might be sufficient at LB, we might even be surprisingly good, but we have maybe one All-SEC guy there and the competition has as good or better LB than Georgia right now.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, that is the funniest thing I have ever heard. UGA will be lucky to win 8 games. This is a program in decline and black eye to the state of Georgia. Losses to USC, UF, Auburn, GT and at least one from pool of Arkansas, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Kentucy. At least one program in the state still runs a respectable program. Should see at least 9 wins on the flats this year.

If “in college football history” means this one year, and this one publication, then the answer is, yes.

If that means realistically and factually, then quite the opposite.

#3 does seem to be a stretch. I do think that being in the 20’s is too low, though. We have an easier conference schedule (No Bama, no LSU), and an easier non conference (no OK St, No ASU,).

Is this same outfit that picked Auburn #1 the year they finished with 4 or 5 wins several years ago?

Number 3 in the nation? You have to be kidding me. I actually think having them in the top 25 is a bit of a stretch, having them in the top 5 is pure insanity. Collegefootballnews must have a huge UGA fan base visiting their website and they are trying to appease them.

If Georgia makes it to the SECCG it will be because of one thing and one thing only; TODD GRANTHAM! SEC defenses and there coordinators are too tough for a RF QB that has never taken a game snap to beat on his own. Remember the few games McElroy went thru without throwing a TD last year? It was Bama’s D that stepped up and kept the game close enough for the running game to take over and carry the Offense.

I would just love to see Grantham go head to head with Smart in Atlanta; if Grantham can slow down Spurrier and Co. we just may see UGA in the SECCG.

Why should this be a surprise? UGA returns a TON of talent and upgrades in defensive coaching, scheme, and at QB

Why should it be outlandish for UGA to be #3

Florida is having to replace almost every starter and certainly every starter of significance, have very little experience, AND YET they automatically get a pass to the top 3?!?!?!

WHY?

if any other team had to replace soooooo many crucial players as Florida, they would not even be ranked!!!!!!!
