ATHENS — This is Georgia’s only day of two-a-day practices this preseason. The Dogs have finished the first of today’s practices, a Sanford Stadium session focused on special teams. They’ll be back on the Woodruff Practice Fields at 4:50 p.m.
Talked with a few players after the morning’s session, which was closed to the media:
“I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in in my life,” he said. “I’m feeling very good.”
Geathers, playing the nose position in Georgia’s 3-4 defense, said he weighs about 324 now -– down from about 345, he says, when he arrived last August. He was redshirted as a freshman last season.
“In high school, we played a 3-4 and nickel like we’re playing here,” Baker said. “So I’m very used to the defense. I just got to learn the different names and how they call plays and stuff like that.”
The 6-foot, 200-pound Baker played linebacker and running back in high school. In his senior season last fall, he had 70-plus tackles (19 for loss) at linebacker and rushed for 1,040 yards and 13 touchdowns at running back.
He was recruited mostly as a linebacker, although he said several schools –- Miami, Ole Miss and Florida International –- wanted him as a running back.
Does he expect to eventually get a shot on offense at Georgia?
“I still have thoughts about it,” he said. “I talked to some of the coaches about it, and at this point I don’t know. Maybe next year or a couple of years from now, they might move me. They know I’m capable of doing both sides of the ball.
“Right now I’m going to focus on linebacker and see how that goes my first year.”
Safety “is what I want to play because that’s what I came up here to play,” he said. “If I was to slide down to linebacker or whatever, I wouldn’t really have a problem. But I like playing safety so far.”
“It’s not as big a deal, because I know I can contribute either way,” said Gamble, who was shifted from inside linebacker to outside in the final week of spring practice. “When I get in, I know I can make a difference, whether it’s at the outside or the inside. I’m that type of player who just plays wherever I’m needed and when I’m needed. I mean, I don’t care if I don’t play until the last play of the game as long as I know I’ll make a difference that last play.”
Gamble started 11 games last season.
He said he has practiced only at outside linebacker so far this preseason, “but I’m still keeping up in the playbook with the inside ‘backers. Another injury, and I’m right back in the mix [there].”
“It gives us a lot more time to actually learn, with a new defense coming in,” Gamble said. “We have more time in the film room, more time on our own to study the playbook. We get our one practice in, then get a lot more time to critique it.”

Nobody has really been saying his name much, but I cant wait to see what kind of hits Mr. Rambo has in store for our opposing receivers this year. Especially for Da’Rick! I know he’s got a special one saved up for that chump!

Well of course Gamble has a good attitude RX, wouldn’t you if you were playing on the “best defense we have had in 3 decades” declared by BuLLdawg?
(although I think I saw where he downgraded it to being just a, should be a solid defense, a few days ago. Must not have liked what he saw while visiting practise last week.)

I believe UGA wanted Zander to be a fullback and thats how he was recruited, if memory serves me. Recruiting a good fullback nowadays is not that easy. At least not like it used to be about 15 yrs ago.

Shed some light here. Rambo, Hamilton, and Ogletree all play the same position? Or is Hamilton battling Williams for the other safety spot?

did anyone else like seeing the gators ranked pre-season #3? can’t help but think a lot of young kids over there may now feel a sense of entitlement….that had no bearing whatsoever on the past several years of success.
the target is on the back of a bunch of guys who have yet to lead. they could certainly live up to the hype….but, i don’t see it.

People who pay ANY attention to pre-season rankings have too much time on their hands and too little gray-matter in their craniums.

Napoleon Dawg,
This is my other favorite comment from Techies–Murray is a midget. Newsflash, the leading passer in the NFL over the last 2 seasons and last years MVP is the same height. So clearly, Murray’s size is not necessarily and issue. Not to mention, he was the #3 recruit coming out of HS and won MVP at the elite QB camp–the most distinguished QB camp in the country for pre-college players. Murray will be more than fine. Sorry Techies.
Rather than knock the height of our QB, why not see if you can teach yours how to throw. I have seen better arms on chairs!

I too am concerned about stopping the run. Spurrier likes to run the ball more than some of you think so.
Nose, DeAngelo Tyson, 6′2, 290, quick off the ball but a bit undersized to handle double teams. Behind him, is Kwame Geathers and Bean Anderson with no experience.
DE, DeMarcus Dobbs, 6′2, 288, more suited as pass rusher
DE, Abry Jones, 6′3, 284, quick off the ball but more of pass rusher
These guys will have to use their quickness to their advantage.

Comparing Grantham in term of some of the attributes that made Erk a legend is fine, an honor if so, but if his actual product on the field loses anywhere close to what they did in the decades of the 70, he AND his new Boss won’t be around very long.

Army Chaplain In Iraq, if you have friends or family in Georgia with cable or Direct TV, you can have a sling box put there and watch all games online, It is actually liked by the cable companies as they say it just widens their advertisements and it is just like having a second tv at a paying customer,so you are on good moral ground with it. Cost around $300 USD. Expatriots use them all over the world
