Preseason coaches’ poll: Georgia Tech No. 17, UGA No. 21

The first of college football’s major preseason polls -– the USA Today coaches’ poll -– came out early this morning, with defending national champion Alabama No. 1, Georgia Tech No. 17 and Georgia No. 21.

The coaches gave Alabama 55 of 59 first-place votes, with the others going to Ohio State, which is ranked No. 2.

Rounding out the top five: No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Texas and No. 5 Boise State.

And completing the top 10: No. 6 Virginia Tech, No. 7 TCU, No. 8 Oklahoma, N0. 9 Nebraska and No. 10 Iowa.

The SEC has six teams in the Top 25, with Alabama and Florida followed by No. 16 LSU, No. 19 Arkansas, No. 21 Georgia and No. 23 Auburn. Coming off an 8-5 season, Georgia has its lowest ranking in the preseason coaches’ poll since since 2001, when the Bulldogs started Mark Richt’s first season in Athens unranked. The Dogs started last season No. 13 and the 2008 season No. 1.

The ACC has five teams in the preseason coaches’ poll, including four from the Coastal Division in the top 18: No. 6 Virginia Tech, No. 13 Miami, No. 17 Georgia Tech and No. 18 North Carolina. The Atlantic Division’s Florida State is No. 20.

Georgia Tech will play Virginia Tech and Miami within a 10-day stretch in November — at Virginia Tech on Nov. 4 and home against Miami on Nov. 13.

The Associated Press preseason media poll will be released on Aug. 21.

SEC and ACC are well represented on the list. Of course we all know that preseason rankings don’t mean squat.

Hopefully both UGA and Tech will move up before we meet in November.

Georgia ranked really? Wow atleast the name gets you something. Georgia will be awful this year. They will probly still beat Tech though. Best of luck on a Quarterback.

Hey Midland Dog…you are correct. Last year UGA was in the pre-season polls and were not ranked in the end. That will be the case this year too.

How does OSU keep getting ranked in the top 5? How many beatdowns are they gonna take before people realize the Slow 10 is not that good!

Bama returns 1 starter on D and Florida lost a lot of big pieces … this is why I wish they wouldn’t start the polls until Week 4 of the season …

Sorry, we made a printing error. UGA is actually ranked 121st, just behind Georgia State.

This team reminds me of Alabama in 2008. Alabama started out #24 that year and everyone didn’t know much about them. Knew that they may be pretty good and had good players. Within 5-6 games they were #1.

Ole Miss shouldn’t be in there. They are replacing their QB with a new guy who has never played in a Pro-style offense and walked in the door just a week ago. Replacing their RB also.

Congrats to Alabama.. Saban is a great coach.. but they’ve got a tough schedule.. Auburn will be tough.. I like that UGA will be an underdawg in some games like S.C. which we will win in a close one !!! Go Dawgs !!

Let’s not forget that Tech lost 4 good players in the NFL draft. I would be really shocked if they were still ranked at the end of the year. What are the coaches basing this projection on, the strength of Nesbitt throwing the ball?

Ohio State is the most overrated football program every year. I just don’t get it. They play a weak schedule and get crushed every time they play a decent team out of conference.

hello

August 6th, 2010
8:42 am

VT is ranked # 6 because they have a loaded team on offense and they have one of the best defensive coordinators in the country…so losing starters on defense should not be that hampering for VT. As for GT’s ranking I like it…if we come out of the gates and beat UNC and Clemson we could be looking at a real chance to go 8-0 before the VT game. I think we would surely be ranked in the top 5 by that point. Even if we slip up and lose to UNC or Clemson…not both…we should be in top 10 going into the VT game. We gotta beat the teams we should beat…and fight and claw against VT, UNC, and Miami. If your ranked in the top 20 you usually have an excellent chance at the BCS title game…that should always be the goal at the beginning of every year…aim high. GO Jackets!

Prediction: some will go up, some will go down. Call for your Fantasy 5 numbers now.

hello

August 6th, 2010
8:45 am

RFP I think they are basing it off the strength of our coach…who is 20-7 over the last two years. Plus we return most of our backfield, have a deep O line, return a deep secondary, return several defensive players who were vital in 2008 but sat out 2009 due to injury, and did I mention our coach…he is 80 games above .500. This is the deepest and most experienced Tech team since PJ has taken over…I fully expect this team to be good…and it looks like the coaches do too…they respect Johnson because most have had to play or coach against this offense.

dawgfan

That might be the weakest preseason top 5 I’ve seen in a long time. Every single one of those teams has MAJOR issues.

Look for a major darkhorse to come out of absolutely nowhere this year and win it all. Think 2000 Oklahoma or 2003 LSU. Its long overdue.

You heard it here first.
