Grantham sees Gamble pushing Washington at OLB

ATHENS – Georgia’s defensive and offensive coordinators chatted with reporters after Friday’s practice, which was interrupted for about 80 minutes by a late-afternoon storm:

  • I asked Todd Grantham where the hottest battles for starting jobs are being waged on defense, and the first one he mentioned was a bit of a surprise:

“Outside linebacker. You got [Darryl] Gamble and [Cornelius] Washington. I’ve been pleased with both those guys’ progress. Both of those guys have improved.”

Justin Houston is entrenched at one OLB spot, and Washington came out of spring practice a solid No. 1 at the other. But Gamble, who moved from inside linebacker to outside in the final week of spring, “has had an excellent camp,” Grantham said. “And literally Cornelius has improved the last couple of days. So we’ll see how those guys go when we start playing.”

  • The other positions Grantham mentioned as battles for starting spots: strong safety (Nick Williams vs. Jakar Hamilton) and one cornerback spot (Branden Smith vs.  Vance Cuff, although both will play a lot).
  • Generally, Grantham seems very pleased with how things are going:  “I like it. I think the guys have really bought in to what we are doing. I think they’ve shown that they’ve studied in the offseason.”  He said it was a good sign that the players maintained their focus when they returned to the field after Friday’s thunderstorm.
  • As for which freshmen have caught his eye in the opening week of camp, Grantham mentioned linebacker Demetre Baker, cornerback Derek Owens and “obviously” safety Alec Ogletree.
  • Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo clearly expects a breakthrough season from sophomore wide receiver Marlon Brown, who played surprisingly little as a freshman last year.

“Marlon looks like a different player to me in just how he’s running,” Bobo said. ” He looks smoother; he looks more flexible. . . . I’m excited about Marlon Brown. . . . Marlon has a bright future. . . . He’s going to play a lot for us.”

  • Bobo said again that he has been “really pleased” with freshman quarterback Hutson Mason’s practices against the No. 1 defense this week: “He has shown a lot of composure and ability to make plays.”
  • Offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who missed almost all of the past two seasons with knee injuries, is getting limited reps but “when he’s been out there, he’s looked good,” Bobo said.
  • Georgia will practice in full pads for the first time Saturday. “I expect us to go out and play fast,” Grantham said.

I can’t wait to see this D play, being a Dawg fan and a Cowboy fan this is the perfect D for this team to run. Kids want to make plays and with this type of D, top talent will want to come once they see the stats we put up the next couple years.

I really think Gamble will be one of our best defenders. He’s a really good football player who was great as a sophomore but was a little off last year.

On a serious note……I believe the new attitudes this yr will make UGA a better team. If they over-achive slightly they could be really, really good.

Without pads everybody looks quick and tallented. We need alot of blocking and tackling full speed then reevaluate position battles. Go dawgs! I like Grantham’s enthusiam.

Flash forward——-When I am watching a game on TV this fall…..My favorite part of the new improved Defense will be when an opposing QB throws a pass and the camera follows the ball to the receiver- and…wait for it…

We see a UGA defender in the same frame !!!!!

I was so freaking tired of read and react defensive philosophies…

Of course, that will be WHEN the opposing QB actually has time to throw.
PRESSURE will be huge!

So could you if you learn to spell.

Have you accounted for the half dozen or so players who will be arrested and suspended between now and the end of the season?

Vera, mind your manners! You are being caustic again. Did you guys see C. Washington’s 40 time? Even with a tailwind, a young man that big shouldn’t be able to move that fast. I would hate to have him running at my blind side…be kind of like an F-111 sneaking up on you just below the mach!

Boy. After the Idaho State and Louisiana Layfayette games, everyone will know (what we all know now) that Georgia has the greatest college defense, greatest college defensive players, and the greastest defensive coodinator ever! We will not lose for the next 200 years with this defense….EVER LOSE AGAIN. Put money on it.

All this is good news. Players pushing each other to become better, and the players we had already in the fold working harder to get better. Especially good to hear about Marlon Brown. He is gonna do great things, I am really glad he is a dawg. Check out my posting about the running backs and how they stack up against the National Champs. Not too bad compared.

Honestly, guys, stop the 1st, 2nd, 5th crap. Leave that for the Tech board.

Glad to hear the defense is working out, but would we really hear if it were not? I am hopeful, let’s say, and thrilled the season is a day closer. Interesting that Mason is getting the attention he is. I guess that means Logan is not really the back-up. Let’s hope it doesn’t have to be tested either way.

Finally — some articles about football! If only we could have had a mature Todd Grantham defense during the Stafford/Moreno years. I think what we’ll see in Athens this year is the beginnings of just that; a high-powered offense combines with a ‘Bama/Florida caliber defense. I’m excited about every aspect of our team this year; Ealey/King, Green/Brown/Durham/Wooten/King, Figgins/White/ Charles/Lynch, Murray/OL, the 3-4, the lights-out secondary/Lakatos, the kicking game, special teams … I think y’all get the point. Recruiting is and has been out the roof. Did I mention I was excited? What a great time to be a Georgia Bulldog !!! We love you, Coach Richt. Go Dawgs !!!!

Why do Tech fans use inappropriate same sex innuendo about “owning” people and such? I mean, I can see it from Gators but I expected so more from Tech folks. I understand that’s their lifestyle choice and all but must you threaten others with your choices?

NEWNANDAWG, I believe you are right about Alec Ogletree. There is a reason CTG said “obviously” safety Alec Ogletree. If anybody hasn’t seen this highlight of his junior year play, it is worth a look. He repeatedly crushes his opponents. This young man is a beast on the field. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YSNYHlA41o
His play is frankly a bit stunning in this video (no pun intended.) I really can’t wait to see him GATA.
