Former Georgia quarterback Zach Mettenberger has a new team: the Butler Community College Grizzlies, a perennial power in junior-college football. Butler is located in El Dorado, Kansas.
The Wichita Eagle reports that Mettenberger is on the Butler roster and quotes coach Troy Morrell from Jayhawk Conference Media Day: “We did our research on Zach. We feel like he can be a great asset to our team, and it’s widely known that he paid the price for what he’s done and he’s trying to move on.”
Mettenberger was dismissed from the Georgia program in April, shortly before pleading guilty to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery in Valdosta. He was sentenced to 12 months probation, 80 hours of community service and a $2,000 fine.
Butler is ranked No. 6 among the nation’s junior-college football teams in the preseason poll. The Grizzlies have won five JUCO national championships since 1998, including titles in 2007 and 2008. Butler starts practice Thursday and plays its season opener Aug. 26 at home against Navarro College.
Mettenberger, from Oconee County, was redshirted at Georgia as a freshman last season.

Zach, is not a bad kid for all you that know anything about him, however he made a dumb and serious mistake that he is paying dearly for…can’t say the same for some the issues at Tenn that seem to being washed under the rug, just my opinion, though, don’t know all the facts, but only one player has been dismissed, but police officer was/is in serious condition as result of the incident…Not defending Zach, he got what he deserved and will pay for a while, lbut i hope he can get back to doing thinkgs right…I wonder if he gets on the right path, would the bulldog nation and the Coaching staff allow him to return to the team in a year or two…You can bet alot of div 1 teams would give him another chance(see ole miss)…Again, don”t know all the circumstances of what he did, only what was reported and had he done that to my daughter as has been reported, drinking or not, i would not be so forgiving, but again, we all have made terrible decisions in our life and hopefully if we show remorse and change our behavior we could be given another chance…and i’m not talking about violent crimes of such, i’m talking about the less severe type, while serious in nature, maybe deserve a second chance and would we be opposed to having him as a dawg again?

Kevin,
It was a little more than just grabbing a girl’s breast…everybody down there knew exactly what he did. It was a felony! Nevertheless, best of luck to him and take this as a second chance that many guys would find themselves either pleading guilty to a felony under the first offender act, or spending time behind bars.

Did they warn all the parents of the female students at Butler that his is on campus? Just kidding. I hope the kid works his way back successfully as Cameron Newton did (and learns to respect women by keeping his hands to himself unless they are welcomed). But don’t worry Dawg fans, he will never be a Gator. That job is taken in 2012 through 2014 by Jeff Driskell. Mosoli will be gone in a year….so I am sure Ole Miss will put out the welcome “Met” for him (pardon the pun).
Reality Train
August 4th, 2010
12:12 pm
I think this case was handled appropriately. The kid paid a price, got publicly humiliated and now will have a chance to rebuild his life and put this incident behind him. What is alarming is that, but for the grace and and use of common sense by the prosecutor, ZM could have been prosecuted for and convicted of a crime that would have made him a “sex offender”. ZM then could not live near a bus stop or playground or day care, etc. If ZM had not been on the UGA team and had not benefited from all of the publicity he may still be in jail and facing a ruined life. He’s lucky on the one hand, but on the other, its time for everyone to realize that the usual punishment for crimes like ZM committed are absolutely insane.

take your low, unfair, unjust, and homer blows at the rest of SEC…but you are badly mistaken with your post. Every team in the SEC would have kicked him off the team for what he did.
And the SHAME you mentioned….is on him….an no one else. You are a blind homer if you think anything different…which you obviously do and obviously are.
But Ole Miss has probably already contacted the guy to offer him a new scholly. I wouldn’t doubt that based on their history with Hornsby and Mosoli.

You have failed trying to create your own racism with an agenda here, move along now.
Now on the subject at hand, I would be surprised if Zach wound up transfering back to an SEC school. I’m pretty sure he will probably try to leave all of that in the past and play in another part of the country.

“Mettenberger was dismissed from the Georgia program in April, shortly before pleading guilty to two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery in Valdosta. He was sentenced to 12 months probation, 80 hours of community service and a $2,000 fine.”
The key words are….”pleding quilty”…which usually means his lawyers arranged a lower “plea deal” sentence for a first time sexual assualt offender….from what I know about the law. And I am sure the Georgia coaches were given advanced notice of the deal that had been worked out for him so they could make a decision on his future at Georgia.
I think this would be standard legal procedure in such a case…but you black or white….or any other color…..unless this was the 1950s…which it isn’t.
But you can bet the kids name is on every police blog concerning “sexual assault” crimes in the country…and that is a bad deal for the kid. He has a lot of work to do to restore his name. Mettenberger could come back to UGA next year, be back-up quarterback, and serve as liaison with the Athens bail bondsmen who get the arrested athlete-thugs out of jail. That would take a huge burden off Mark Richt.

I understand Zach M had a “straight arrow” rep before this incident, and maybe it was the alcohol, but TampaGator is absolutely right that this had to be have been plea bargained down. Inappropriate and uninvited touching is a “battery” and that can definitely be charged as a felony. I hope the kid takes advantage of this second chance, but another such screw up and he does belong on a registry. I also think UGA did the right thing about parting ways with him although it certainly hurts the team quite a bit especially if Murray goes down or struggles. This was no 3rd string safety. I don’t know all the details, but what it sounds like what he alledgedly did was absolutely wrong and he paid a pretty hefty price for it (public embarassment and loss of scholarship). I think he deserves the chance to go somewhere else like this and hopefully make the most of this second chance.

Well he was also originally charged with: underage consumption/possession of alcohol, disorderly conduct, obstruction and two counts of possession of fake ID.
The two counts of misdemeanor sexual battery were charged after the girl actually decided to press charges- it was two counts because he grabbed her butt and boobs.

He got thrown off the team b/c of his ethnicity. Always got to placate the loud, obnoxious minority that lives to play the race card ad nauseum. If he were another ethnicity, he’d merely been suspended for the first quarter of a meaningless D-2 game.

You can’t call that a mistake! Getting kicked off a football team and paying a fine and being on probation is not good enough. He should have had to went to jail and let men sexually assault him!!! Hope the punk falls on his face!

Zach and a bunch of guys were partying at a local establishment when some little hussy(yes, I said it, what was she doing there, underage drinking) recongized that Zach was going to be annointed the next great QB at UGA. You know, following, Quincy, Joe, Bobo, etc. Any way, she made googlie eyes at Zach, lead him on, let him cop a little feel. But here is where the trouble starts, Little hussies boyfriend finds out, starts a fight and well….now you know the rest of the story. How do I know this ??? I was there.
I will not be the next head coach at Alabama. I am the head coach of the Miami Dolphins

Best of luck to Zach. What he did was very poor decision, and he has paid a high, public price. To those critical, what would you like to share about your activities in college?

TDawg, I do not have a dog in this fight. We have our QB, but I must say that I am black and I have read many stories on this blog where a black player was kicked off of a team and the comments are like night and day in comparison to this story. I wish the kid the best, but your comment about blaming Bush really shows where your thought process is. Remember, It took more than the black vote to put our president in office. If you don’t agree with his policies, perhaps you should run or better yet continue to speak out of your “so ecclesiastical neck”. I would also like to say that “if there was never any racism, then no one could question it!!!! Once again, I hope this kid gets his life together and may God be with him!!!!

Team mates contributing to this blog, it dosen’t matter your color or allegiance at this point…here’s a young man who was in trouble; fortunately, things were halted before they [potentially] could’ve worsened. Look, as much as we want to send praises Zach’s way or tear him down, the kid will have to live with this horrible mistake for the rest of his life. Even if all the riches of the NFL fall into his hands someday, he’ll still need to explain to and justify to someone what he did that unforgetful day over and over again; maybe even his own daughter…talking about a “tough moment.” As someone stated earlier in this blog stream, we all have things in our closets…maybe we just haven’t been caught yet! I wish Zach the best – but I never want him to forget his actions and the pain it caused him and others…especially the victim! So for those of you (black or white) who want to make this an issue of “race” here…don’t, because it’s counter-productive. There are real issues of race out there, team mates, but this “ain’t” it!

Wow…white kid commits sexual assualt and the whole state wishes him luck…man if these posts don’t show you the true nature of folks around here…nothing will. People are on here saying that grabbing a women’s breast is no big deal…huh? Let someone grab the breast of your wife or daughter and let’s see how you feel about it then. Glad the kid is getting a second chance. I just hope you all remember that the next time someone who doesn’t look like you makes a mistake.

I am really in awe in what I am reading here!!! Sexual assault OK! Dogfighting, electric chair. Sexual assault, give him another chance to play football. Dogfighting, take everything from him and let him rot in hades. Go to strip club for your bachelor party, get killed by off duty cops it’s ok because he should not have looked like he had a gun. Rape a girl in the back of a club 4 game suspension. Membership has it’s priveleges!

I’m sure I am not the first to think or say this, but what prevents us (UGA) from resigning Zack after JUCO? Just wondering……..he’s done his time, he turns out the stellar stats n juco, and is looking for a place to spend his last two seasons as a SEASONED veteran QB………just a thought….the feel good story of 2012-2013……

People get real. He hasn’t sexually assaulted anyone. The darn boy was drinking and grabbed some bootay playing around. They were in a bar for goodness sakes. You holy rollers ack like you haven’t ever got drunk before. The girl should have just slapped his face and that would have been that. Instead the police got a hold of it and made a federal case out it because it was a well known person. That’s BS!

What about the Tennesee team that Gang attacked a police office putting him in the hospital?
Or the GT players running from the police with deadly firearms after commiting Major crimes.
The Tennesee players are still on the team.
Listen he was drunk did somthing stupid but for you to judge him the rest of his life look at yourself first.
This kid if he stays healthy and straight WILL be in the NFL and there will be many girls who will want him grabbing their boobies.
