Six months after signing with Georgia’s football program, and without participating in a single practice, freshman outside linebacker Dexter Morant left the team.
“Football’s just not for everybody,” coach Mark Richt said at his post-practice media briefing Wednesday. “I think he felt like he lost the desire to play. We tried to convince him that it would be in his best interest to stay and fight through it. . . . In the end, he felt like it wasn’t for him, at least not right now.”
Morant, a 6-foot-7, 240-pounder from Manning, S.C., signed with Georgia in February. He played defensive end in high school but was projected as an outside linebacker in new UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s 3-4 alignment.
Coming out of high school, Morant was rated the nation’s No. 15 defensive-end prospect by Rivals.com, No. 44 by Scout.com and No. 73 by ESPN.com.
Morant, who had been in Athens since June, informed Richt of his decision to leave before Tuesday’s practice.
“He told me a couple of times,” Richt said. “We were working hard to try to keep him. He was leaving; then he was staying. He was leaving; then he was staying. He finally decided he wasn’t going to stay.
“He came to me with his keys in his hand and said he wanted to go. I sat with him and tried to get him to stay. He didn’t want to do it.”
Richt isn’t sure of Morant’s plans.
“As I spoke to him, it didn’t seem like he was that interested in playing football. Period,” Richt said. “He said, ‘Coach, if I really wanted to play football, Georgia is where I want to be. It’s just that I don’t know what I want to do right now.’ It was more of a feeling like he lost the desire to play the game.”

Some of the blame here could go to Richt and his evaluation process. Looks like Richt and his staff did a poor job of evaluating this kid- his heart, his desire, his drive. He must have just looked at his size and athletic ability solely and not talked to his coaches, advisors, or people around him to find out about the kid’s drive, character, etc. It also explains why the dawgs have such a plethora of player arrests and bad apples. Richt and his staff simply do a poor job of evaluating the intangibles of what makes a good football player and it continues to haunt us.

Look at the average SAT score of the applicants to UGA and you will see. UGA averages about 200 points less than GA Tech on the applicants. This was reported by the AJC and so you can verify it through their archives.

Its not as if Georgia is a freaking harvard or something. Of course Georgia is now a lot harder to get into than say Alabama and AU. Georgia has twice the population of Alabama and has the hope scholarship which means substantially more people than ever are applying to UGA. Far more applicants than available spots and the lottery making college affordable means UGA is now in much more demand. Its just simple supply and demand. Doesn’t mean UGA is all of a sudden some kind of Harvard of the South. And lets face it. Your academics are now where near as tough as Tech and you know it!

Cesspool of the south comes from the jealous nerd herd.
They can’t beat us so they call us names.
You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against thug-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

Don’t know the kid, but maybe he wasn’t a good fit for being a 3-4 end. It’s unfair to automatically label the kid a “quitter,” when you don’t have all the facts yet.
The position requires a unique skill set: You have to be big enough to take on guards and fullbacks trying to set the edge in the run; but you also have to be nimble and athletic enough to not only rush the passer but drop into coverage at times. That’s why I think the Ogletree kid will eventually be moved there and be a perfect fit.
The kid may have come to the conclusion that he’s better fit for a conventional 4-3 end — big, tall, rangy, quick first step, good with his hands.
I wish him the best, wherever he lands.

I didn’t say the 3-4 is not a good defense…obviously…..Bama proved that it is. But look at Bama players on defense. They all fit a certain mold which a lot of excellent recruits do not fit. That was my point. Georgia might have great success with the 3-4 as its regular defense. But they will lose out on some really good recruits who do not fit the scheme. Florida, on the other hand, runs a multi-defenses that include the 3-4 and the 3-3-5 and the standard 4-3…which prsents a large realm of opportunities for a large realm of recruits. That’s all.

Look, no one will argue that GT is not a good school, but the days of UGA being academically inferior are over.
The “Top 10 Best Value Public Colleges for 2010″ are:

“Hail Georgia”
(Played after the PAT)
Hail to Georgia down in Dixie!
Our college honored fair and true,
The Red and Black is her standard,
Proudly it waves!
Streaming today and the ages through,
She’s the fairest of the Southland,
We’ll pledge our love to her for aye,
To that college dear we’ll ring a cheer,
All hail to dear old UGA!
GT:
“Ramblin’ Wreck”
(Played after the PAT)
I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer,
A helluva, helluva, helluva, helluva, hell of an engineer,
Like all the jolly good fellows, I drink my whiskey clear,
I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell of an engineer.
Oh, if I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold,
And put her on the campus, to cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do.
He would yell, “To Hell with Georgia,” like his daddy used to do.
Oh, I wish I had a barrel of rum and sugar three thousand pounds,
A college bell to put it in and a clapper to stir it around.
I’d drink to all good fellows who come from far and near.
I’m a ramblin’, gamblin’, hell of an engineer.

To “Recruiting Guru” –
I agree with your assessment about UGA not doing a good job in terms of recruiting knuckleheads.
The philosophy SHOULD be “let’s take some 2-3-4 star kids with good grades, intelligence and character, and coach them up to be 3-4-5 stars…” Instead, it seems like the philosophy in Athens is “let’s go after the 4-5 star kids, no matter how poor their grades, intellect and character, and hope they go to class and stay out of trouble when they get to campus …”
There are enough talented, smart, good kids in this state, who can play on a high level. There is NO EXCUSE to have as many knuckleheads as UGA has. When you coach at say North Carolina, you have to take a couple of chances, maybe, on a possible knucklehead or two. But not at UGA.

I’m a UGA fan that graduated from kennesaw state and got my MBE from west georgia. Both my uncle and cousin graduated from Georgia Tech but neither of them ever acted like idiots by putting down UGA or any other academic institution. My uncle worked at Tech for over 40 years in the research department. He was absolutely brilliant and he had a lot of class and would have never bad mouthed another institution. The man knew Bobby Dodd personally and all the Tech football coaches through the years. I guess the point I’m trying to make is, I wonder how many of these so called tech fans who come on the message boards to put down UGA academics actually graduated from Tech? I have been tempted to ask some of these folks point blank but it is not my sytle to get into message board battles.

The official ending to Glory is “G E O R G I A”. However, on game days, it will change to “To Hell With *whoever UGA is playing that day*” by the student body. Because, well, that’s what college students do.
Considering Georgia Tech is the big in-state rival, that’s the one that gets repeated throughout the year. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the methodology behind the variables in the UGA fight song. I could write up some simple C++ code to explain it if you need some more help.

Graduate of Tech and UGA – never heard cesspool of the south term during 4 and 1/2 years at Tech, which was about 10 years ago.
As far as GT having great student athletes, and UGA not having any, I beg to differ. I’ve run across some former Tech and UGA scholarship athletes working as car salesmen (no offense to car salesmen, but don’t believe a degree is required). Both schools have incidents of players being arrested – Rueben Houston, Dontavious Jackson, etc.
As far as stating that GT fans are actually GT grads, whereas UGA fans are not grads of UGA, there is truth to that, but it goes both ways. Back in the 1940-60s, Tech had a great following based upon the prowess of the team throughout the state. Many of the fans weren’t GT grads. I would have to say that UGA’s fan base among non-UGA grads has increased because over the past 40 years, they have been the better football program in the state, which makes them more popular in general, which leads to morel fans in general, regardless of enrollment in or graduation from UGA. Also, given the size of the UGA alumni network throughout the state, more people are likely to know a UGA grad than a GT grad, giving them a connection to the school. Also, GT has a higher percentage of out of state enrollment than Tech, so many Tech grads move back to their state upon matriculation.
As far as the young man leaving the team, wish him good luck, and I am looking forward to both GT and UGA being successful this year – should be a good game in Nov. between the two.

It is obvious Reality is obsessed with UGA. His constant rants are juvenile and he makes an a** out of himself daily on these blogs. Why do you constantly come on here and berate UGA when you have your own blog on the AJC? Best thing to do is ignore him. He is upset because Tech will always play second fiddle to UGA. Don’t get me wrong, Tech does win every 8 years or so. As far as the comments about Jan Kemp. I think Tech has had a few academic woes themselves. Your campus is unsafe and if you want to call Athens a cesspool what can you say about your surrounding area of your so called great school of higher learning? Face it UGA runs this state, always has and always will. Go back to cleaning your pocket protector and playing with your Star War characters. Your stadium is a joke and you can not sell a game out unless a big time foe comes in and brings as many fans as your little venue will accept. How can a college in the largest city in the South not consistantly sell out their stadium? Four tickets, 4 cokes and 4 hotdogs plus a witness to a mugging is advertised to entice prospective ticket buyers. I understand your coach has closed practices to the media. Wonder if he is going topless and only wearing his sports bra? On a sidenote if your team ever has a great season then CPJ will bolt to greener pastures because your alumni and fans do not support the team nor the university. You never have had a coach for any length of time since Coach Dodd left. Even Bill Curry would not stay. Face it you are destined to be second in the state and once Georgia State becomes a factor you will be third. Furman even beat you once.
Gator fans can talk smack on here cause they basically have owned us for the past 20 years just as we owned them the previous 20 years.

I’ve seen your post before. You apparently aren’t creative enough to write original posts. Your high and mighty school should have taught you to proof read: “on what a bunch of kids does…”
My real concern is regarding your statement about the graduation rates. Did you do any research on your statement? I encourage you to do so. According to the latest report on graduation rates, UGA and GT tied at 48% (NCAA website).
Also, it appears that the Associated Press conducted an investigation regarding the use of special admission standards for athletes. Georgia Tech was one of the schools specifically listed.
You should retract your statement and issue another that admits that GT’s athletes are no better, or worse, than UGA’s when it comes to academics.

Tampa Gator,
GA is not confined to just the 3-4 on defense. They can still run the 4-3 if need be, and not to mention their nickel and dime packages. Your mention that Florida is more multiple on defense than UGA is incorrect. Both teams are flexible, but it just so happens that Todd Grantham prefers the 3-4. Tons of teams in the NFL run the 3-4. Florida may be more talented that UGA (I’ll give you that) on the defensive side of the ball, but they’re not more multiple. Just felt the need to educate you on some football knowledge my fine reptile friend.

Seriously is this really news? I don’t care how many stars a kid has in front of his name, if he doesn’t want to play here, oh well, good luck to him. The problems of the last few years has been the coaching, not the recruits. I’m focused on this team getting ready for the season, drop the rest of the dead weight and lets move on. We have plenty of talent on this team to beat Florida or Alabama. I’m tired of fans moaning and groaning, excuses, and looking at the past.
I’m excited to see the stories about young guys who have been studying the playbook and are hungry for playing time. Should Richt act like Dooley and hold a kid to their scholarship when they have no desire to be there?
And considering how many teams are currently running the 3-4 in the nfl, I don’t see how that hurts UGA. 4 of the top 5 defenses last year in the nfl ran a 3-4 base defense, and I suspect UGA will adjust from the base 3-4 to fit certain situations.

Sometimes things don’t work out like you’d planned. And that’s true whether you’re a coach who offers a scholarship or a kid who accepts a scholarship. Best of luck to Morant. If he wants to stay at UGA in school, great, I for one welcome him. However if he wants to go elsewhere, that’s his prerogative and I wish him the best.

Your exactly right. That’s why schools like Georgia, Tennessee, etc. constantly have troubles with their football players. They recruit based on height, weight, and forty-time, not SAT scores, heart, and substance. Why is UGA called “The Cesspool of the South”? Let’s see: (1) Jan Kemp proving that Dooley won football games with players that couldn’t even read; (2) Jim Harrick and Junior and “How many points for a 3-point basket”; (3) Damon Evans and red panties; (4) the weekly arrest record, and oh so many, many more. Cesspool of the South is actually a compliment to this so-called University. Remember, if you can’t go to college, go to UGA.

If the kid really is 6′7″ 240 (which is incredibly skinny), it makes you wonder why he went to a school that uses a 3-4 where he knew he was going to play OLB. You basically use DTs as DEs in a 3-4, so unless he was going to add about 60 pounds (which isn’t necessarily out of the question), he was always going to play OLB.
6′7″ just seems way too tall to play LB. Maybe I’m missing something. Either way, I hope it works out for the kid.

He shows up to practice, its a gazillion degrees, people are screaming at him and for the first time in his life he’s NOT the best player on the field. How good was your decision making at 18?
And for those of you who are all over the coaches not picking this weakness during the recruiting process, you have obviously never done any recruiting of any kind. Recruiting at the very best is an inexact science and if you get it right 60% of the time you are doing great.

To the relatively small number of rival fans who come on UGA blogs to actually talk about the subject, this is not aimed at you. To the rest of the rivals, here is some friendly advice:
Going through life full of bitterness and UGA envy, is no way to live. So, maybe you or a loved one could not get into UGA. The majority of applicants cannot. It is no disgrace. You can get a good education at ANY SEC school. Granted, it is not Athens, but look at it as the glass half full, not half empty, and enjoy yourselves in Auburn, Fayetteville, Starkville, K-town, wherever.
Finally, remember this- if you are among the tiny percentage of humans on this planet blessed to live in the South, count your blessings. And Go Dogs!

To Hell, to Hell, to Hell with Georgia,
To Hell, to Hell, to Hell with Georgia,
To Hell, to Hell, to Hell with Georgia,

There arose a mighty stench,
In the Dogs’ machine the engineers
Had thrown a monkey wrench.

Just coulda been homesick, remeber that kid Chad Young a few years ago from Dalton? He simply just didn’t like life away from home, but he was a good kid and wound up a HS football coach back here in Dalton. Another day, more Tech fans obsessing over The University of Georgia.
It’s so tiresome having to remind Trade School Nuggets of thier place in the world.
1) The Georgia Institute of Technology was concieved, planned, chartered, financed, and launched almost entirely by UGA graduates. Tech’s ENTIRE academic legacy exists but for the foresight of Georgia graduates. Classes were being held in Athens when North Ave & 10th was a turnip patch. And in fact UGA is the oldest public school in the country.
2) Tech is a limited curriculem Trade School. Meanwhile UGA bears the responsibility of being the The liberal arts university in the South.
3) And the component most relevant to this blog…………Georgia’s dominance over Tech in every sport the two compete in save Men’s Basketball is just laughable. No team has so completely jack-slapped another for 100 years………in everything as UGA has GTU.

Actually, the term “cesspool” was a Middle English word describing a vault or cavern where the riches of the noblemen were secured. According to legend, even priceless books of wisdom and valour were also placed there for safekeeping. Some time along the turn of the 19th century, a group of GT frat boys who were jealous of their Athens bretheren, decided to use the term “cesspool” to describe their run-down and deployable living conditions, hoping it might give them some status; hence the term became what it is today. So, the North Avenue nerds are good for something.

There are a couple of things that continue to confuse me about most UGA blogs. First, I understand why Tech fans with an inferiority complex enjoy posting negative comments about UGA, but I can’t figure out why Florida fans bother with the pointless insults. Until UGA gets back to beating Florida on the field on a regular basis, I don’t know why a Florida fan would even be interested in UGA.
The second thing that I find puzzling is the number of children who are Tech fans. Its obvious most of the Tech fans on here never attended college and a majority appear to have the intellect of a 4th grader. I’ve never seen so much excitement about the word “panties” outside of an elementary school classroom, and adding a “y” or a “g” after UGA is the kind of “insult” that would only amuse someone who thinks “I know you are, but what am I” is an original and witty comeback. I know UGA has a huge fan base of Georgians who never attended college, but I never realized Tech was so popular in elementary schools. I wonder if Tech fandom is part of a trend among younger kids – kind of like Silly Bands – or if it’s something kids grow out of when they start to mature.

)But let’s talk about a few things that may be familiar to you that Dawg players HAVEN’T been arrested for, but should be painfully familiar to you…
1. No UGA player has ever overdosed on herion (GT)
2. No UGA player has ever fired his AK-47 in the sky (UF)
3. No UGA player has ever used a teammate’s dead girfriend’s credit card (UF)
4. No UGA player has ever been arrested for armed robbery (UT)
5. No UGA player has ever asaulted an off duty police officer (UT)
6. No UGA player has ever had felony drug trafficing charges (GT)
I think we all get the point. So go ahead and spout ThUGA all you want and talk about arrests, and while we may have quantity the rest of you MORE than have quality.

Why are all of these douchebags on a UGA football blog trashing the University? Their incessant attacks suggest something personal- perhaps they couldn’t get admitted, or the school wouldn’t accept their child; or maybe it is because they could never date the hot Tri-Delts or ADPis but the UGA boys could.
As far as academics, let’s stop this nonsense. The HOPE scholarship has opened the doors at UGA to a much larger group of applicants, so the school can be more selective and the average scores are going up. With a student body in the 30,000’s, compared to Tech’s 7 or 8 thousand, Tech should no doubt have higher test score. GT also has a more limited number of majors to choose from, and on average they are more academically challlenging on average. With the addition of the Athens medical school that gap may shrink, but it will never go away. Both are fine schools, the one best for you depends upon what you want to do when you graduate.
For all of the reasons listed that make Tech a more challenging academic school, they will always be inferior athletically, except for an occasional abberation (like a football win one out of ten years). Their basketball program is the one area in which they are better than UGA because of the “one and done” nature on NCAA basketball, plus the fact that basketball tends to be a more urban sport, and Atlanta’s urban nature is often attractive to the top hoops recruits. That urban environment is probably a disadvantage in other sports.
All that being said, both are fine academic schools, and have been proven to be so by many independent sources- but UGA owns the state of Georgia and it owns the bugs’ butts.

I can see you now….in 2050…saying the same exact thing. Florida and Meyer have cleaned the house and set the tone for a new and better football culture (the talented Frankie Hammond losing his scholarship for getting a DUI). You need to get a new line to sell whatever you are trying to sell….which has not recently been beating Florida on the football field….where it really matters….and I know….this is the year that things change….and what did I say about the “same old story.”

Thanks for your attempt to educate me….now my turn.
As I said…Georgia’s PRIMARY defense will be the 3-4 and they will run their defense primarily out of that formation. They might shift to another formation in a fourth and long or a 3rd and short….but that is not being MULTIPLE….my DAWG loving friend.
Multiple is when the team playing you never knows what formation from one play to another your defense will be in….no matter the down and yards to go situation. That….my Dawgie friend…defines the multiple style defense of Florida vs. Georgia. Florida might be in a 5-2-4 on first and 10 and the next first and 10 they will be in a 4-3. And the next first and 10 they will be in the 3-3-5….you never know what multiple formation they will be in on first and 10. Georgia will always be in the 3-4 on first and 10 with your new DC. Does that clear things up for you and clearify YOUR knowledge system….my Dawgie friend. FLORIDA’s DEFENSE IS MORE MULTI in formations and styles of attack than Georgia….recently and this year. JUST THE FACTS…my DAWGIE FRIEND….from your LEPTILE FRIEND who knows nothing about football. Never played it. Never watched it. Never been to a Florida practice or a Florida game. Never watched Georgia play and for sure knows nothing about the 3-4 and multiple style schemes. Thanks for making me feel so stupid and just a lowly Gator. Sorry….your attempt failed.

Ever since Tech’s first football game in the fall of 1892, the students and fans of Georgia Tech athletics have been inventing cheers, songs, chants, etc. in encouragement of the teams. There is an extensive list cheers used at Tech events – some rooting on the Jackets and other bad-mouthing the opposing team. First and foremost is the original Tech cheer:
Differential Y,
Differential X,
To hell with differentials,
We want sex!
Engineers touchdown,
Engineers yell,
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Fight like hell!
Another version:
Differential X,
Differential Y,
A square, B square,
Integral of pi….
Another cheer:
E to the X dy dx,
E to the X dx,
Tangent Secant Cosine Sine,
3.14159,
Square roots, cube roots, Poisson brackets,
Disintegrate ‘em Yellow Jackets!
I mean c’mon…how are we supposed to compete with that???

I’ll bet most Braves fans never played for the Braves or Falcon fans for the Falcons. In fact, most college football fans never finished college. Most Tech fans never went to Tech. True! Most Georgia fans never went to Ga. True. If you had to have gone there to be a fan…not many stadiums would be full. In fact, Tech’s games could be played at a Pee Wee Field! I hope things work out for the kid. If he is like most recruits, he committed to UGA before Richt made the changes in the coaching staff – even if he only “signed” afterwards. Now that there are 3 new coaches on the defensive side of the ball, along with a change in D from a 4-3 to a 3-4, the UGA football program is a little different than he expected. Better that he changes schools now than he wastes his own and UGA’s coaches’ time this season.
The “fans” blasting him, calling him a quitter, etc. should be ashamed.

I think he definately would of added a wringle to the defensive scheme and helped us out. He was recruited fairly heavily by several schools. For those trashing the kid and saying we didn’t want , I say as a true Dawg fan that if that is your attitude towards an athlete then really the one we don’t want is you. Go root for another team please because you are as lame as those who have nothing better to do in life than posting negatvie mindless comments on articles obviously centered about the University of Georgia football program. I’m not going to argue w/ you over whether or not Florida’s defense is better than UGA’s, because we all know it is.
However,
How can you say that Florida’s defense will attach more THIS year just because they play multiple formations and UGA won’t??
It doesn’t matter how many formations you play in order to disguise your blitz, as long as you blitz. As you said even if UGA plays in a ‘34′ front on every first & ten, the key is to NOT show a pattern in where your blitz’s are coming from. One first down, your blitz can come from the strong side outside LB. Second down from the Will OLB, third it can come from one of your ILB’s or the safeties. You can even throw in a CB blitz w/ Boykin to throw the opponent off.
My point being is that it doesn’t matter whether you play a ‘34,’ a 3-3-5 or a ‘43.’ The point is to vary where your blitz’s are coming from.
With Grantham we believe the defense will attack much more than it did under WM, so to say that Florida has more styles of attack doesn’t really mean much. Remember, it’s not how you pressure the QB, but how effective your results are.

Actually I think he probably quit because that is what the whole UGA team did in the Gator Bowl the last two years and he just wanted to be an individual and get a head start. You know how youngsters are these days – It is all about me.

Funny thing is though, there are all really nice guys (for Dawg fans) but it is interesting that they hardly talk any trash @ UF at all. I guess there is not a UGA KoolAid machine here locally or they are just more realistic than other fans.

And at an Auburn game some years ago after mouthing back and forth at the Auburn fans, the idiots jumped on the feild at halftime, went over in front of some Auburn people and started yelling insults at them. The Auburn fans got tired of listening to it and jumped on the feild and beat the hell out of the ones they could catch. Most Tech kids ran for they’re life. And Tech lost the game!

Does any one remember the year when Tech ran onto Grant Field through a banner that said “Georgia: Cesspool of the South” to face the ‘dogs in the year end rivalry?? Lindsay Scott took the opening KO back all the way for a Georgia TD; as he streaked down the sideline he gave the Tech student section “the finger”. UGA went on to take the score to 42 -0 or thereabouts before Dooley called off the ‘dogs. The AJC headline the next day didn’t give the final score; it said “At 42-0 Saint Vincent the Mercifull Calls Off The ‘Dogs”. If Red Panties, Saint Simons, & the like would only learn; I guess they enjoy those all too frequent trips to the woodshed!!!!!! GATA

If they didn’t care so much, us dawg fans would not get so much tender loving care and attention from them.
UGA continues to be one of the best public universities (#21) in the USA and #25 (tied with the lizards) for best business program (the Techniques are #31) per the most recent edition of the annual US News & World Report. There are other superlatives that I won’t bother to mention (#2 Insurance/Risk Management & #3 Real Estate program in the country) but when you add the rich football heritage at UGA… well, you get the point. Here are some facts for the rest of dawgie nation
Ga Tech now has over 20,000 students in undergrad and graduate school.
Ga Tech is ranked 89th in the world among ALL universities. UGA 368 (topuniversities.com)
Highest Median Salary – Ga Tech ranks 17th @$58,900 UGA – unranked (campusgrotto.com)
Ranked 35th (7th among public colleges) US News and World, UGA 58
OK, enough with the academic argument, UGA certainly has dominated GT in football in the past decade with a record of 8-2. I’d bet, however, that under Paul Johnson GT wins no less than 50% while he is head coach. Time will tell, see you in Athens……

Already a poor recruiting class for UGA Signing Date 2010, we have now LOST 3 players from that signing class – 2 of which are 4-Star recruits. 2 of them are academic failures.
Offensive Recruiting in the 2010 Signing Class are particularly poor.
With the state of Georgia finding but 3 states with more from their high schools who go on to the NFL than from the state Georgia, we signed a horrible class on Offense given the all-stars in this state on Offense. The teams in the SEC East who have been beating UGA half the total games the last 4 years, came in and out-recruited us in our own state on Offense.
The fallout from the 2009 signing class here at UGA is even more profound, as now we find perennial power Butler Community College has Zach Mettenberger, fresh of his guilty plea in Remerton for his groping of a college coed. Also missing is Montez Robinson for his beating up of a UGA Coed multiple times. Mettenberger and Robinson are both Top 10 at their position in the nation recruits in 2009. Both were recruited here by Mike Bobo (who also recruited Christian LeMay – found guilty of the same offense as Michael Grant whom UGA Admissions would not allow into UGA.)

My vote as to why Morant is leaving is he has a girl friend back home and he misses her. I will not belittle or chastise an 18 year old for being home sick or one that misses his girl friend.A lot of people see that he is 6′7″ and weighs nearly 250 and think he should be a man but most all guys don’t really mature to being a man until sometimes in their mid to late 20’s. I will not exspect any difference from him. I am from a middle size town and loved my years at Georgia but being honest a lot af the classes you take are from professors who are very “cold” and only care about publishing their next book. The camaraderie and friendships that you get at UGA last a lifetime and is what makes UGA a great place to go to school. I still talk about the 8 tornado’s that hit Athens in the spring of 73 and the nearly year long streaking of 1974 or all the great concerts at the student center.I could go on forever with the great memories and as many things as I have done since, none will match the years I had at UGA except when my kids were born. UGA isn’t for everyone and Morant would love it in time but most 18 year old kids live in the now world and for now he is unhappy . So I wish the kid good luck and be happy.

Yes, Nerds know a lot about manhunts :
Where’s little Joey Hamilton now ?
Last we heard, Paul Johnson had hired little Joey Hamilton to be his Director of Player Personnel for the Georgia tek Nerd football program. Little Joey Hamilton then took his 1st paycheck, bought some drugs and got drunk, committed a hit and run, and was found on Georgia tek “campus” fleeing the scene, who when they pulled him over was found to have drugs in his ashtray.
Really smart football players there at Georgia tek, eh ?
Where is Rueben Houston ? Felony fleeing justice as well. Last we heard the FBI man-hunt is on. You might recall that he was interviewed by the AJ-C admitting that with his son on his lap, he got in a van of over 93 lbs of drugs on Georgia tek’s “campus” for the purpose of showing them where they could sell the 93 lbs of drugs. A few games later, Georgia tek played UGA in football. Rueben Houston was not only on the field but played the entire game against UGA – and, there was NO JUDGE who ruled that that should have happened.
Then, this Summer, we have had 2 Georgia tek football players both DE for Paul Johnson BOTH beat up little girls within a week of each other.

Lets see its Thursday and most of the SEC teams will have started fall practice..just wonder if the fans of UF,Bama etc will actually hang out on their blogs to learn about and discuss what their teams are doing or will they continue to troll the UGA blogs because tearing down a team is a lot easier than actually learning about your team…I know the Bugs will stay..without UGA what do they really have..well besides the Varsity well before the sun goes down..Lord knows going to get a frosted orange after dark can cost them their lives these days.

Leave the young man alone.
He was a good christian boy that went to a place of total sin
and debauchery. His upbringing made it unbearable to consume
the large amounts of alcohol required to be a UGA player.
So, …. he left. Go Gators !!!!

Oh good, we solved that mystery. It’s because he wanted to spend every day of his college career alone in his Russell Hall dorm room studying. Maybe he too will be able to fulfill that 1975 dream of pumping out binary codes from his cubical at a big Atlanta sweatshop.

I graduated from UGA and later attended GT. It’s true that GT’s classes are more challenging, but not due to harder academics. The instructors are some of the most boring people I’ve ever encountered. When they talk dust puffs come from their mouths. It is no wonder that techies suffer maladjusted personalities. Also, lay off the kid. At least he was man enough to drop the scholarship that he didn’t see himself earning. He could have coasted for four years. It’s happened before.

Has anyone consider the young men may be going thru a hard time? Maybe this isn’t his time. It doesn’t make him a quitter. “You love ‘em if they play, but bash ‘em if they leave?” Is that really a fan?
I have a lot of UGA fans that are more objective than this forum. Ga Tech is my team, but I do like UGA. Something has to be wrong for him to want to quit so close to the start of the season.

As an outsider who only passes through Atlanta via I75 when he has to, I’d like to ask a serious question….DOES GA TECH HAVE A CAMPUS? When you talk cesspools, Atlanta has to be the biggest cesspool of the South. Does GA TECH dropouts become the muggers, homeless, HO’s, or do you have to graduate from TECH to receive these honors?
If Tech was the only school in Georgia I wouldn’t let any relative of mine attend because of the location.

Hangman,
Everyone knows (even Techies) that Athens is the Classic City. Many people including outsiders, consider Athens to be the best college town and setting. We have the prettiest girls, beautiful campus, football, bars, music, tradition and atmosphere.
Athens exists because of UGA. Atlanta would exist without Tech and Tech is just another boring school in a large city such as UT in Knox.

“Georgia Tech defensive end Robert Hall has been suspended indefinitely after an argument over money with his girlfriend led to a battery charge.
A Georgia Tech police incident report says the dispute last weekend resulted in Hall slamming former Yellow Jackets basketball player Brigitte Ardossi into a door and wall of their campus residence, causing her head to bleed.”

Late posting this response to DawginLex, but, yes, the Hope scholarship has had a positive impact on SAT scores and difficulty in getting into UGA and other state schools, and that’s a good thing. Unfortunately, however, it has not had a corresponding impact on primarily football and basketball athletes, who still get in with far lower GPA’s and SAT’s than the mainstream student. The same goes for Tech. I love sports, played for Tech, and I enjoy “Good old fashioned hate”, but I deplore seeing my school and UGA populated with thugs and morons that wouldn’t be there if they had to compete for entrance academically, which is what universities are really for.

Would all of you public school kids with GED diplomas, please not come on to the UGA blogs.
We know that your profile is that of some urban, 20 something kid, who has no hopes of ever matriculating at a stellar institution like GT of UGA or SC or Florida. So ……..you hate.
You buy the baseball cap of “your” favorite school, paarade around the local mall, sipping big urange drinks, then bad mouth all of the others by coming onto this site.

It’s easy for all of you to call the kid a “quitter” and slam him for giving up the opportunity of a lifetime by playing for a great program and getting your schooling paid for, but many of you I’m sure never played the game at a high level. Therefore, you have NO idea of how brutal the game is. Couple that by the lack of desire to play the game means Morant made the right decision. Had he stayed, he probably would have hurt the team and himself in the long run. As Coach said “football isn’t for everyone”

To dawgno91 …If you only recruit UGA players from South Georgia you would have missed Eric Zier and David Pollock just to name two. So I think you’re being a little short sighted on your South Ga focus. This guy who quit on UGA was most likely a big fish in small pond and couldn’t take being an average fish where the hittin gets harder, every one is faster and a coach is willing to kick his but to motivate him. Probably a head case and too pampered in high school. I feel sorry for him, he just quit on his future unfortunately and wont realize it until it’s too late. I question his parents at this point. He needs better advise.
Has anyone asked this?

I do not read all of the comments here. No time to. Way too busy.
Has anyone asked this about the young man who left UGA for home? Maybe? he has an ill relative or someone that actually raised him is very ill or in trouble. Now, I am sure this young man comes from a solid, two parent home and has a faith based life AND plays golf and swims all summer routinely at his Dad’s and his Grandad’s country club. Right? Maybe or maybe not.
Young folks come and they go. it took me 6 years to earn a 4 year degree from UGA. Why? Too many reasons why and way too many years ago ……… in 71 & 73 . ……….. it just did. One reason is that I was young and dumb. Most young men are and that is why young men go fight wars.
This departure has no bearing whatsoever on Richt or CTG or UGA or anything ………… he wanted to go home.
Most of you NEVER went away to any college ……….. you only just hang out and bang away on Mom’s PC with your “i hate so and so school” vitriole.
Most of you never, ever played ball either. You know it, don’t you?
Go Dogs.

When somebody is doing you a favor and you pass on it, that does not make you a quiter. It makes you a decider. It might have been a rash decision, some of us might not have underetood the decision, (although I suspect many of the critics would have done the same thing after peeing your pants) but he didn’t owe it to anybody but himself to stay.

Reality, you must be an idiot. The official words to the ending have been posted at least 3 times here. That’s it! The fight song for GT has been published numerous times for random trivia for years because of the verse about Georgia. You want to spout off about something that you have no real idea about. Just another pathetic, inferior, “I’m smarter than you, because I’m a tech fan” moron. Go post on a Tech story line. Oh yeah, that’s right, they don’t exist. Your program is still the “little brother”. Georgia fans really could care less about Tech.
