Hutson Mason makes good first impression on Dogs

ATHENS – It was one practice, the first practice, and it was held in shorts, jerseys and helmets. But Georgia freshman quarterback Hutson Mason made a strong impression, nevertheless.

“I was really pleased with Hutson Mason’s command in the huddle,” offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo said Monday night. “He got in there and took charge. Everything wasn’t perfect, but I was just pleased with the way he approached practice and the way he carried himself. Liked a lot that I saw.”

Mason, from Marietta’s Lassiter High School, has a chance to be Georgia’s backup quarterback behind starter Aaron Murray. Basically, if Murray stays healthy and Mason has a good preseason camp, Logan Gray probably will remain at wide receiver.

“Hutson looked real good,” wide receiver A.J. Green said after the first practice. “He’s just so quick with his decisions, just being a freshman. Just the way he carries himself, he looked real good today.”

As Lassiter fans know, Mason last year set Georgia state single-season high-school records for passing yards (4,560) and touchdowns (54) and a state single-game record for passing yards (552).

+++++++++++

A few quips I thought you might enjoy from Day 1 of the Bulldogs’ camp:

  • Offensive line coach Stacy Searels on how his group looked in walk-through drills before the opening practice: “We really kicked butt in walk-through this morning. We were awesome. . . .Walk throughs, we are world-beaters.” Then, sternly: “You don’t walk through a football game.”
  • Offensive tackle Clint Boling, when a reporter jokingly asked if Boling and Searels go online and study projections of Boling’s NFL draft stock: No, but “Coach Searels and I had a couple of meetings with some agents.” Joking, mind you.
  • And coach Mark Richt, while sheepishly struggling to come up with the name of one of Georgia’s walk-on quarterbacks: “I’ll think of the other gentleman in a minute.”

+++++++++++

If you haven’t checked it out yet, please take a look at AJC.com’s bulked-up UGA page, ajc.com/uga. It has been redesigned to include more Bulldogs coverage than ever. Hope you’ll be a regular visitor throughout preseason camp and the season.

Practice No. 2 is Tuesday afternoon. Updates will be posted on the blog and @ajcuga on Twitter. See you then.

“It’s a little bit scary in there,” Richt says of youth in QB room.

Hutson will prove to be a solid #2. With our superior offensive line, I expect good things from the QB’s this season. Ealey and King will help take pressure off as well. What do you think Mac Haile.

To the dude who keeps asking "how Richard Samuels looked at linebacker"

August 3rd, 2010

…see Stacy Searels comments – unfortunately, Samuel wasted his opportunity last year as a RB, and he will never see the field as a linebacker. He should have transferred so that he could continue to be a RB, but going to the #1 party school in the US does have its place in the mind of a 20 year old and why he chose to stay where he is – not meaning to castigate the kid, just explaining the facts – GATA!!!!!

Samuels didn’t “waste” his opportunity at RB, the Georgia coaches, IMHO, wasted him by playing him out of position in the first place. He came to UGA as one of the best “athletes” in the country. The coaches over-reacted and placed him in the Offensive backfield when he should have redshirted and been in the defensive backfield from day one. He’s 20 years old and has the ability to be a beast. Just give his young body the time it needs to more fully develop.

Mason went to one of those sports specific training facilities over the summer that Boling and Curran and others went to. They produce some pretty amazing results. When Boling came out of HS he weighed 270 and could only bench press about 290. By the time he got to UGA, he weighed 290 and could bp 400. They are saying Mason has put on about 20 solid pounds. I’d say he’s gonna surprise alot of folks.

For those that think the coaching staff messed up with Samuals, lets set the record straight…We had a need at RB last season and didn’t kinow how the rotation would play out…If you remember King had some injury issues and Ealey was a freshman also..Richard wanted to give RB a shot since he had been a successful Rb in high school and yes we know he was a very good Lb…Quit blaming the coaches for him not being as successful as we would have lkided…Its not that he didn’t play well, but others stepped up and thus the pecking order changed…Its easy to blame the coaching staff but we will or another team will have the same similar situation with Mr James Wilder as he also wants to play RB, but all indications are that he would be an awesome LB, but if the kid wants to have a go of that in college he should be given the opportiunity…Samuals was given that chance, and i don”t think he was a failure, its just others stepped up and proved they could be the go to guy as RB’s….Samuals is very competitive and wants to be on the field so the move to Lb is probably a better fit for him, but we will see…

dawgster, I have always wondered what the critics wanted to do, just NOT field a RB to start last season. Watching the early games (replays) over the summer it was clear that while Samual was never going to be All-SEC, he wasn’t exactly lost out there. He also had the disadvantage of a line that didnt have the run blocking going till after he left. he was just a placeholder till we had better options. It seems a waste of time to even discuss it any further.

It’s amazing to me that when we have some players step up, the immediate reaction from some is always complain that the coaches were fools for having somebody in there before that happened.

No DawginLex, what BuLLdawg wants is to be prepared like saban and Meyers. Because obviously Fr. AJ McCarron, and Fr. Trey Burton, are ready to step in and win SEC games if something happens to thier starting QBs.

Both coaches will also have had 3 different starting QB’s in 4 years, over the new few seasons. That’s appearantly completely different that what Richt or any other team in America does in a game where players real productive careers are counted on your thumbs usually.

Why can’t we recruit a top notch starting QB every 3rd year, RS him, get him consistant PT the next, start him the next, and hope that he is never too good he leaves, or too bad that some kid is better and start ahead of him, thus messing up our perfect little rotation.

Oh yea, and also recruit a couple of back up that are good enough to start, can’t, but are ok with that….you know, just in case.

My point AltamahaDawg…You said it very well…it amazes me the people on here who are not out there at practice everyday as the coaches are, but yet they can tell you just what the coaches should do..I too think Samuals will be a very good Lb in the 3-4..He is a very good athelete and should be able to make the move…But of course you know what will happen if he is successfurl, they will come out of the woodworks and say “we told you so”…the coaches had him at RB…

Bulldawg bashes richt over his handling of situations and doesn’t know what he is talking about.

Ealey start at OKie state? Richt said no. He got him ready both physically and mentally and now we have a potential 1,200-1,500 yard star. Bulldawgs plan would have destroyed his confidence, probably got him hurt and wrecked us for this year.

How2fish, the Golden Isles, Savannah, and several other towns make millions of dollars off of that game, so the categorization that Fla makes all the money is not accurate. You also have to consider that in a home and home, every other year you are relegating our state to virtually no revenue from that game. They also pay both Universities more money than they make on a 1/2 home game.

There is also more hotel rooms booked down here that all of Athens contains (again only every other year as well). They book up here starting midweek and not just for what would be a weekend only event home game.

The economic argument “for the state” just doesnt hold up. It’s just redistribution within the state.

Samuel played half the season and sat on the bench. It was a waste. He should have been a LB from the beginning. That is the position that made him a Parade All-American. He had trouble following his blockers and early in the season the blockers had trouble blocking. He is a straight ahead power and speed guy. Ealey and King are quicker and are natural RB’s. It was a waste. Face it. Mason may end up starting at UGA in a couple of years despite LeMay. He’s got talent.

I have been a dawg fan all my life and literally bleed red and black; but, I have to admit all this neutral site stuff only comes up when we are going through a dry spell. No one worried where the game was played while Dooley was going 17-7 against Florida. I played in the REDCOAT band in the early 80’s and the Gator Bowl with the fans equally there for both, cheering, it was an amazing experience. What we have to do is start beating Florida and reheat the rivilry. When that happens, where the game is played will no longer be an issue.

I think Murray will be just fine. I don’t think his height will be an issue. Not that I’m calling him the second coming of Drew Brees, but they are identical in height and stature and Mr. Brees seems to do just fine. Another example in the college game would be Case Keenum from Houston. He’s listed at 6′2 but he’s really a shade over 6′. I’d say he’s doing pretty well too.

I’m not trying to dis the dawgs, I am just amused that the UGA supporters can only rely on the series record of 47-37-2 to throw at the Gators. Look, 1950-2009 is a lot longer than
1904-1949. Do you realize that Georgia beat Florida like red-head step child from 1904-1949,the record was 22-3-1. That’s alot to over come as far as the overall series, but we are working on it. First of all, the name is Richard Samuel, there is no ’s’ after the l. I have to assume you posters who know “exactly” where Richard Samuel should have played, and assert there was a mistake by the Georgia coaching staff made with him from a position standpoint, were in practice each and every day, you observed it all first hand. You would have to be to have knowledge and a basis to proclaim you know of his most natural position, wouldn’t you? Richard Samuel was an early enrollee. He obviously demonstrated ability and talent as a RB. With his size and speed, why not. I wonder, have any of you stopped to consider had he played LB he would have been coached by John Jancek. Exactly WHAT kind of LB would he be having spent time under Jancek? The Georgia LB corp was the worst fundamental group in the SEC. How lost would RS be today? God only knows. If he can play LB, Walter Belin will develop him into a good one.

Some of you people are amazing, simply amazing. You know exactly where Richard Samuel was best suited to play and you are ready to annoint a freshman with one day in shorts on his resume’ as a potential star (Mason). Trust me when I tell you this, as hard as it may be to believe, there have been MANY guys who looked darn good running around in shorts but were missing in action when the pads went on. Blake Barnes was a world beater in shorts and pass skel, but lost when the pads and full contact scrimmages started. I hope Hutson Mason does become a fine QB, however my attitude is ‘let’s wait and see first’.

Lex, we are in agreement on all that. I am obviously sarcastically making a point that Saban, and Meyers are in the same boat as far and a Qb rotations and having freshman as your only backups, and multiple starters in a period of time. They have more experience starting this year, but next year and the year after we are going to be deeper.

Interesting Man, I agree. Stafford starting as a freshman and leaving as a Junior, didnt really help the flow. Really looking back if you are going to second guess, there is a case to be made that if Stafford had RS, things would have worked out better in the long run from a pure rotation stance.

And Joe Cox was just here at the wrong time, I think if he had a second year, he would have corrected some of his mistake. When he was on, he was plenty good enough. He just couldn’t carry the team on his shoulders which is what he ended up having to do. That and the pressure of your only shot. I wish we had him this year and could work Murray in.

I certainly think the 17/20 mantra is fair. The one I have always had an issue with is the whole “UGA never won the east except when UF and TN were weak”. When has UF ever won the East when UGA and TN were both having great years?

Mason is going to be a 4 year backup(and third string), with very little chance to start. If that is what he wants then good for him. Hopefully he works hard, stays out of trouble and completes his degree.

HugoStiglitz – You need to get at job on ESPN as an analyst. The way you can rate talent. Half of those guys never played, you would fit right in. All mouth and nothing to back it up with. Mason will be fine and he doesn’t need you to endorse him.

Jesse James, you could be right. Maybe Mason is the greatest QB who ever lived and he will show it. But lets be realistic. UGA’s current QB was the #3 QB out of HS. They have a QB coming in next year that is the #2 QB out of high school. Mason is #53. Mason also didnt have many good offers outside of UGA. So maybe im wrong, scout is wrong, rivals is wrong, and all the teams in college football were wrong but he looks to be less talented then UGA’s other QBs. He is going to be 3rd string most of his career, possibly a backup.

Gators 17 Dawgs 3, you need to check your research son. The Dawgs and the Gaturds have met 87 times since 1942 with UGA sporting a winning record of 46-39-2 despite losing 17 out of the last 20. By the way, speaking of ass whoopins, the largest margin of victory in this series was 75-0…..UGA. Stay on your own blogs if you want to spew inaccurate data!

Sorry, my mistake. Walk-ons due have names. They are issued the name of their choice the week before the opener. If you are an injured walk-on anyone can take your name at any time during the year. If your name is taken from you, you are not allowed another name until you are a 5th year Sr. I like that rule, its fair for everybody!

Graduated from a so called Party School with a BS (3.75 GPA) in 76. On Scholarship and had a blast. Went to The University of Ga. Grad School and graduated with a 4.0 and had a blast. Two kids at Ga. and they are having a great time. Not all students are just getting wasted. Will retire at age 57 and am still having a blast. The partying tag is just cute and college was a fantastic experience. I will be at the games and go Dawgs, win or lose.

Sometimes youth is a positive. The kids don’t know any better than to be confident because they’ve always been successful at the high school level and before. Youth is not always a bad thing. They’ll make mistakes but as long as it doesn’t erode their confidence then they’ll bounce right back. That was the only knock I had on Spurrier while at UF. He could really chip away at the QB’s confidence. Not many can take that kind of “management”. The ones that do are usually great, but most can’t take it. I don’t see that being a problem with Richt or Bobo. They seem to be pretty patient and will need to be with all of those freshman playing QB.

dawgsrulefla,
Actually, you’re wrong. How can they have met 87 times in 67 years? They can’t. Also, he is correct that UF does hold the advantage since 1950. Much of that is because of the last 20 years. But, of course, UGA does still own the overall and will for at least the next 7 years. LOL!

Good to hear Mason was impressive. As a true freshman, I expect it to be up and down daily.

Samuel is 6′2, 235 lbs and fast. When he came to UGA, he wanted to play tailback and won the starting position. Later, he lost out to two others but that is where he wanted to play, and he was the starter. Now that he is on defense, its wait and see. The good news is he stayed at UGA, because he is a great athlete and competitor.

With his speed, I thought Samual would have been interesting as a safety.

mark it down—-mason will have the starting job after 4-5 games and keep it for 3-4 years—he’s the real deal. Lemay will be in trouble a bunch of times anyway, so he has no shot to beat out mason!

I remember when Drew Bledsoe was the starter for the Patriots and Belichick said he was benching him and starting a totally unknown Tom Brady, which seemed insane at the time. Stay ready Hutson, you never know.

No matter how some of you on this blog try to justify this “neutral” site concept, It simply does not make sense even coming from Richt. What really makes sense is to rotate home field play each year just like all the rest of our opponents. This will never make any sense no matter how anyone tries to dress it up. Get the game back to Athens period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Home and Home

August 3rd, 2010

Florida has all the advantages playing in jacksonville, which is basically a home game. They travel 45 minutes on a bus to the city and UGA has to travel for hours on a bus and plane and are usually worn out when they get to jacksonville. They need to move the game to home and home or atlanta to make it more fair so Ga can win more.

Here is a NEWS FLASH… Richard Samuel is 19!!!!!!

All of you talking about Richard Samuel being wasted…..Look at his birthdate..

2-3-1991. In my book that adds up to 19.

Ealey is 20 months older than him. Who wasted him the first year on 20 carries in the games. It is a shame what they have done to this kid and not redshirting him the first year as a 17 year old when he could have been a junior in HS. Ealey’s birthday is after May 1 so that meant he could play as a 19 year old senior in HS. His running experience in a small school really helped him be ready.. When a kid plays his senior year as a 16 year old and divides his time between LB and RB it reaks of dividing time between two jobs. Can you imagine him starting as a 13 year old hs freshman. He had flashes of brilliance last year but his lack of total RB experience showed….Realize he should have been a senior in HS last year when he started at UGA his second year there!!!!

One more thing about Richard Samuel……. How good a RB could he be behind this all world Offensive Line that we should have this year????? Could he have not been coached better by a running back coach last year and really learned something???? I am certain we will never know.

We cannot waste these kids abilities whether it is a RB or a QB… Logan Grey will never be a very good receiver because of the time not training to be one.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like Miami and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

And red panties in your face everywhere you go.

Year of the Dawg

August 4th, 2010
11:24 am

UGA finally has a good defensive coach again and is loaded at all the key positions on D, oline and RB. Murray will fit in good and UGA should only lose 1 or 2 games. 2010—this is the year. Dawgs beat florida and win the SEC east—book it.

Gators R Us

Don’t get your hopes up for Murray or Mason. Neither of them would ever start for at least three of the teams in the SEC. For sure, they wouldn’t get a second look at Florida or Alabama.

And at least one of them is bound to be arrested and suspended.

Stagger through this year, and beg Mettenberger to come back next year.

Mason and Murray are better than nesbitt at tech—without any good RBs or WRs, nesbitt’s going way down this year—mark it down.
