Murray drops the glove (plus other news and notes from UGA camp)

ATHENS — Here you go, the first bits of news from Georgia’s preseason camp:

  • After wearing a glove on his throwing hand throughout spring practice, quarterback Aaron Murray said he has rethought the matter and will not wear a glove in preseason camp or during the season. “I tried it on and off throughout the summer but just decided I felt more comfortable without the glove,” Murray said today. “I think I’m fine without it.”
  • The plan, at least at the moment, is for quarterback-turned-wide receiver Logan Gray to take no practice reps at QB. But coach Mark Richt said Gray has been told to stay “mentally prepared” to play QB, and that the situation might be reassessed in a few weeks depending on how true freshman Hutson Mason is progressing as Murray’s potential backup.
  • So for now Georgia has a redshirt freshman (Murray), a true freshman (Mason) and two walk-ons (freshmen Parker Welch and Greg Bingham) at quarterback. “The quarterback room has got to be youngest room in the history of college football,” Richt said. “A little bit scary in there.”
  • Starting inside linebacker Akeem Dent will miss most of preseason camp after undergoing toe surgery last week, but Richt says it’s still possible Dent could be ready to play in the Bulldogs’ season opener Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
  • Freshman offensive lineman Kolton Houston is sidelined with a foot injury. Not clear how long he’ll be out.
  • Richt said he doesn’t know how long it’ll take the NCAA investigation to play out but said all players are eligible for practice.
  • Georgia takes the practice field for the first time of the 2010 preseason at 3:25 p.m.

Whats up with the possible “silent commits” mentioned abover…I don’t like or really understand the slient commit situation whether its true or not…First of all if you know the school you are wanting to go to then just say it and enough with the theatrics, its not really ethical to string the other schools in my opinion, however, if you want to commit to a school and let everyone know, then thats ok and if the schools still want to invest time in you and possibly get you to change then that would seem fair for everyone, bit to silent commit and then play games to me is not ethical, i know its done alot but still i will not let my son play that game…When you give your word to a school that should be enough, however in the case of a coach leaving or something then thats a whole new story…But into todays recruitng ethics are sometimes overlooked….

Glad to see the Oompa loompa QB nixing the glove idea. Still he may need to borrow those pinball wizard shoes from Sir Elton John to see over the line of scrimmage.

Great! We have to book Chuck E Cheese for any birthday parties involving our QB’s. Richt really knew he had a young QB room when he entered and got hit by the silly string and squirt guns.

Why do the losers trolling this blog think “red panties” is embarrassing? The DUI is embarrassing. The red panties? Not so much. I am guessing those throwing the “red panties” line out just would they would have a chance to see a pair that doesn’t belong to the mother.

If Coach Richt hadn’t been so infatuated with Joe Cox, we would have an experienced QB starting the season. And, if Coach Willie hadn’t been so infatuated with Evans and Miller, he might still have a job. Maybe we would have won 10 games, too…at least Tenn and Kentucky.

CMR takes the CEO approach to coaching and doesnt know the names of the new players. CMR is not hands on anymore. Vince Dooley did the same after winning the MNC in 1980 and became a CEO and thus not as many wins after a few years. Same with Richt….not as many wins in the conference.

Good Grief, what does this statement say about the state of UGA football. CMR sure has a whole lot of confidence in his young QB……

The lead photo looks like Preacher Richt is starting this season off right with the laying of the hands.

Or is he trying to quiet the crowd when he asked them, “Hey, who is up for bowling this afternoon?’

Willie Wonka Dawg,

“Oompa loompa QB”–that’s very clever. You know who else is an oompa loompa by your standards? The QB who’s led the NFL in passing for 2 consecutive seasons and was last year’s MVP. Murray will be fine. #3 QB in the country and was the MVP at the Elite QB camp.

If Mark Richt tries to use the ole unproven QB excuse he needs to be run out of town on a rail. He had all season to get another QB in the games but would never do it.

Hey Einsteindawg, Had Murray not been injured i believe he would have gotten significant playing time..I for one am glad they didn’t get him in there and waste a season or possibly having him reinjured before he was truly healed…with that being said a case can be made of not getting Logan Gray alot more playing time, but i have to feel that the coaching staff did not think he was their answer at QB and that Joe was our best answer last season…but your point is well taken but Murray really was not a viable option last year as he just wasn’t 100% heatthy…

UGA is so irrelevant to me that i feel the need to post on every UGA blog there is. No I’m not threatened in anyway by the Dawgs I mean sure they spank us every year and people outside of North ave. don’t even know we play football, and only a 100lb midget like Rudy would only be able to sack one of our QBs but I love GT gosh darn it! So what if I’m a loser that is obsessed with posting comments on the superior school in the state of Georgia’s blog.
