Murray drops the glove (plus other news and notes from UGA camp)

ATHENS — Here you go, the first bits of news from Georgia’s preseason camp:

  • After wearing a glove on his throwing hand throughout spring practice, quarterback Aaron Murray said he has rethought the matter and will not wear a glove in preseason camp or during the season. “I tried it on and off throughout the summer but just decided I felt more comfortable without the glove,” Murray said today. “I think I’m fine without it.”
  • The plan, at least at the moment, is for quarterback-turned-wide receiver Logan Gray to take no practice reps at QB. But coach Mark Richt said Gray has been told to stay “mentally prepared” to play QB, and that the situation might be reassessed in a few weeks depending on how true freshman Hutson Mason is progressing as Murray’s potential backup.
  • So for now Georgia has a redshirt freshman (Murray), a true freshman (Mason) and two walk-ons (freshmen Parker Welch and Greg Bingham) at quarterback. “The quarterback room has got to be youngest room in the history of college football,” Richt said. “A little bit scary in there.”
  • Starting inside linebacker Akeem Dent will miss most of preseason camp after undergoing toe surgery last week, but Richt says it’s still possible Dent could be ready to play in the Bulldogs’ season opener Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
  • Freshman offensive lineman Kolton Houston is sidelined with a foot injury. Not clear how long he’ll be out.
  • Richt said he doesn’t know how long it’ll take the NCAA investigation to play out but said all players are eligible for practice.
  • Georgia takes the practice field for the first time of the 2010 preseason at 3:25 p.m.

Here’s more about Bowman:

Georgia receiver Michael Bowman visited and committed, just like said he would earlier this week.

Bowman is No. 51 on the Press-Register’s Super Southeast 120. He grew up a fan of Georgia but was reportedly waiting to receive a full scholarship offer from the Bulldogs. He is thought to still have work to do academically to qualify for 2009.

“I’m gonna get my grades up,” Bowman told CrimsonConfidential.com. “I’m still working on it. I have plenty of time though.”

Roll Tider, I’m also hearing Robey Green and Rod Woodson. I believe Robey Green has already been suspended if I’m not mistaken. Has the NCAA finished their inquiry with Ingram going to the DC party?

treyinga, while I agree that Nesbit can’t pass I wouldn’t brag too much about QBs. Will be very interesting how this season plays out for yours as well. I only give UGA a winning record because they have UT, Vandy, and UK on the schedule. I think Florida, Auburn, and Arky smoke you and USC could go either way. I said 5-3 but 4-4 is very possible.

Ingram had clearance before he even went. Dareus is the only one being investigated and he’ll end up cleared.

Roll Tider, Bowman signed a couple years ago. 4 star WR, little brother of Adarius Bowman who would have been a 1st round pick except he got busted with a lot of drugs in Meigs Co. Tn two weeks before the draft. He was the WR at OSU after transferring from UNC after playing for Notre Dame HS in Chattanooga (kicked out b/c of mary jane) Sadly, he wasn’t even drafted and is now playing in the CFL. Good talent. Million dollar body, ten cent brain. Are you caught up yet? :)

WOW….It’s good that UGA can be first in something…..even if it is just “PARTYING”. It definitely won’t be in collegiate football team no matter how much the rednecks and bubbas keep trying to spin it claiming how great it is to be a DAWG……DAWGS #1…….NOT!!!!!

Hey Tim! According to the Princeton Review, UGA is the nation’s no. 1 party school! Also, my University of the South – Sewanee broke the top 20, unsurprisingly, and is the only liberal arts school in the top twenty! Yea, Sewanee’s Right!!! Go Tigers!!! Seriously, though, I share your concerns about the quarterback position. I think young Mr. Murray is going to do just fine, and maybe even excel, but he cannot get hurt. There is no depth whatsoever behind him. Barring injury to Murray, I see a strong season this year. The defense should be MUCH improved. Grantham and Lakatos are both good coaches. And we have experience, talent, and (apart from the QB position) depth on offense.

I personally think Murray will struggle mightily if we cannot establish a running game. Let’s be honest – he’s a reshirt freshman and hasn’t played an entire season of football since his Junior year in high school. Just sayin…..

No insider info, just eye test from last year and knowing what everyone is bringing back. I just think UGA, even with Grantham, will struggle with Garcia and Mallet. I think Auburn with Newton and Malzahn will be tough for everyone this year and UF is loaded with athletes. Overall the conference will be down somewhat with Bama and UF meeting in Atlanta again. Though Auburn and Arky may pose problems for us as well.

Tech lifer talking about UGA embarrassing the state is a laugher. Tech getting scorched in the Smurfterf Bowl by Our Lady of Basketweaving State was an embarrassment….Bill Lewis…Buddy Curry…Chan Gailey…Decades and decades of being the state of Georgia’s answer to Vanderbilt…51-7 loss to UGA…Ball throwing the ball away on 4th down rather than take a hit. Bay-Bay choking and dropping a wide open pass. Eeking out one victory in a decade and having rings made to mark the occasion…now these are true embarrassments….Ya’ll have been so bad for so long that one ten win season makes your crow like roosters. We’ve had six in the last nine years btw…and are 7-2 in bowl games under Richt. I believe Tech’s bowl record in the same time period has been 2-6…Tsk Tsk…talk about embarrassing. I am glad things are getting better at the North Avenue trade school because for years I couldn’t even show my face when someone from another state mentioned Tech.

You detractors remind me of the ugly kid

August 2nd, 2010

UGA articles are for anyone to read, i suppose. When the UGA haters get inolved, I always think back to middle school, where the ugly, scrawny kid ALWAYS pulled the hair and called the pretty girl in the class “ugly”. Why/?? Because that punk wanted that girl’s attention. On this site? I suppose the UGA haters either have NO BLOG to go to, because they have no collegiate ala mater or they are jealous of UGA. If they are true grads of an Alabama or UT or LSU, Auburn, Florida, or even GT, they have serious jobs and are too busy to sit and bang away all of this child like ” I hate UGA” vitriole. Me? I am retired. UGA Class of 71 & 73 thank you.

Why are they jealous?? We all know that “UGA has no NC’s” so why are the UGA fans (grads) so excited about this year or 2002 or 2008 or 2009 ?? ………….. because they are fans ….. with or without that fabled NC lately. We love our ala mater and all the haters just reinforce the love for UGA.

heck …………family memners for generations have graduated from UGA and that is another reason for the hate ………… jelousy of UGA traditions. They attend even without that NC.
Folks, the NC is nice, but it ain’t the reason you go to a university. NCs are primarily for guys that really care about the NBA and the NFL playoffs and the Super Bowl. I could care less about that stuff. This is the key.

Go Dogs.

Great post. I think everyone knows that it is the same 100 people posting the same crap over and over anyway. It really puts their fan base in a negative light, because the majority of Tech/Aub/FL etc etc fans are not just waiting for the newest UGA blog to be posted and to make some stupid comment (usually has nothing to do with the article)

I feel like people do not realize Murray does not have to be Case Keenum out there, but all he has to do is not make mistakes. He has arguably the best WR in the nation, a great RB tandem and a great OL
