Murray drops the glove (plus other news and notes from UGA camp)

ATHENS — Here you go, the first bits of news from Georgia’s preseason camp:

  • After wearing a glove on his throwing hand throughout spring practice, quarterback Aaron Murray said he has rethought the matter and will not wear a glove in preseason camp or during the season. “I tried it on and off throughout the summer but just decided I felt more comfortable without the glove,” Murray said today. “I think I’m fine without it.”
  • The plan, at least at the moment, is for quarterback-turned-wide receiver Logan Gray to take no practice reps at QB. But coach Mark Richt said Gray has been told to stay “mentally prepared” to play QB, and that the situation might be reassessed in a few weeks depending on how true freshman Hutson Mason is progressing as Murray’s potential backup.
  • So for now Georgia has a redshirt freshman (Murray), a true freshman (Mason) and two walk-ons (freshmen Parker Welch and Greg Bingham) at quarterback. “The quarterback room has got to be youngest room in the history of college football,” Richt said. “A little bit scary in there.”
  • Starting inside linebacker Akeem Dent will miss most of preseason camp after undergoing toe surgery last week, but Richt says it’s still possible Dent could be ready to play in the Bulldogs’ season opener Sept. 4 against Louisiana-Lafayette.
  • Freshman offensive lineman Kolton Houston is sidelined with a foot injury. Not clear how long he’ll be out.
  • Richt said he doesn’t know how long it’ll take the NCAA investigation to play out but said all players are eligible for practice.
  • Georgia takes the practice field for the first time of the 2010 preseason at 3:25 p.m.

We got two great silent commits over the weekend and not a word from the AJC!

I miss Damon.

Zach was the QB of the future. He and Damon could have partied together.

If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit.

Paul Johnson wouldn’t have let this happen. He’d have at least 3 backup QBs and NONE would wear a glove. THAT’S the difference in the coaches at the two schools. Paul Johnson would have thrown this Michael Jackson wannabee out of school. Heck, he probablyl can’t even do calculus with that stupid glove on. I’m glad Murray went to ugag rather than tech. He’s a disgrace. Probably doesn’t wear a pocket protector either.

Reporting on whether the QB will wear a glove? Do the papers in Gainesville, Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, and Columbia report that kind of stuff? (I doubt it).

VS, since I know of only three guys that we are UGA over the weekend and one of them is a 2012 prospect, that would mean we got silents from two of our biggest targets who shall remain nameless?

NC, if what V says is indeed true, I’m stoked. One is ranked #1 at his position and the other is top 3 at his position but IMO, #1 at his position as well.

No way UGA wins in the ACC with that group of QB’s, even if Grantham is able to work miracles. Reality on the defensive side is that improvement to league average is more likely than becoming a shutdown unit overnight.

I say the Dawgs go 5-3 in SEC play.

Teck guy, you’re gonna need all 3 of those backup QB’s. Nesbitt can run the ball a little but overall, as a QB, he sucks. Before the season is over, you’re gonna eat those words about Murray. You will wish that Nebitt is half the QB that Murray is. Hell, you’re gonna wish that GT had a QB as good as Georgia State’s.

Bowman is the kid who wanted to go to UGA all his life but was only a partial academic qualifer. Signed with bamer instead. One of the top WRs in the state, maybe 6′4″, 210lbs. Must have been a bust if you don’t know who he is. I believe bamer is also recruiting his little brother.
