Stokan denies Georgia-USC rumor

A hot rumor spread from the West Coast on Wednesday that the USC football team would come to Atlanta to play Georgia in the 2011 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. (It spread the new-fashioned way, from Twitter to message boards.) But Gary Stokan, the game’s president, denied the rumor when I called to ask him about it Wednesday night.

He said there have been talks with USC about a possible appearance in the 2011 game — but not, he said, against Georgia.

“Georgia is not a possibility for 2011,” Stokan said.

He said UGA, through former athletic director Damon Evans, expressed interest in playing in the season-opening game in the Georgia Dome at some point in the future but indicated the next few years wouldn’t work schedule-wise.

Georgia is scheduled to open the 2011 season against Louisville in Athens.

As for USC, Stokan said Trojans coach Lane Kiffin sent him a text message in February to suggest a 2011 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game matchup against his former team, Tennessee. “It’d be a great storyline,” Stokan quoted Kiffin as telling him in a subsequent phone conversation. Stokan said new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley later told him he’d be willing to play USC in Atlanta — after he has three years or so to get his program established.

The bottom line, Stokan said, is that the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game still doesn’t have a 2011 matchup.

“We don’t have an opponent [for USC],” Stokan said. “We don’t have USC either.”

Stokan does have matchups for 2010 (LSU-North Carolina on Sept. 4) and 2012 (Tennessee-N.C. State).

Speaking of scheduling: Georgia hasn’t finalized or announced its 2010-11 basketball schedule yet, but the Bulldogs will open the season at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 in the new-look Stegeman Coliseum against Mississippi Valley State. That’s according to a schedule posted on the MVSU website.

Wished it would happen, but I know that GA, for some reason, does not want any part of the kick-off game in the dome. what about GA vrs. Clemson, that would be a good game.

Clemson wants no part of the kickoff "classic"...

Why give that moron the limelight? He made fools of a lot of people in the SEC and letting him come back to coach against UT would essentially be condoning his actions…water under the bridge … no big deal. C’mon Chick Fil-A — Do the right thing and do not invite USC to play.

i agree, media needs to stop kissing up to kiffin, guy is a joke and an embarrasement to college football. UGA/Clemson would be a great matchup and renew an old rivalry- Didn’t the Dawgs smack them down 30-0 last time in Death Valley??

Keep Kiffin the heck out of the south. If people are stupid enough to hire a 12-20 coach to run their program, let them keep their idiocy out West.

UT fans – you still deserve the “turd of the decade” award for bringing him into the SEC.

Alright dawg fans……………you guys sounding like you “might” be scared of USC. Just think of all the westcoast exposure. LK is going to be the coach at USC until he leaves, so there is nothing the SEC will be able to do about that. But everytime the opportunity arises, the SEC should jump at a chance to kick his ass. That in itself will send a message to all the kids here in the south that USC/PAC-10/PAC-12 cannot match the SEC.

Ya ll need to concentrate on stopping the regular beat downs from the Gators and ole Rocky Top for UGA to really have any national and regional credibility while also keeping Richt off the hotseat.

Sure Kiffin would love to come back east and whip the program he put in a tailspin, while he walked away seemingly to a much stronger team. Dooley and Hamilton would be idiots to agree to that game.

I wonder what Kiffin would say if he was offered the game against Alabama or Florida? He runaway like he did to USC…….

Tony Barnhart discussed UGA and UF non-conference scheduling in regards to the neutral site UGA-UF. His take was that this being a neutral site as opposed to a typical home and home would make it very difficult financially to have a 2nd neutral site. This would necessitate scheduling one less home game that particular year.

dear Ummmm, UGA isn’t scared of USC. QUite the opposite really. If you’ll recall the ‘07 season when Damon Evans and UGA guaranteed the Rose Bowl a sell out if they’d take UGA/USC as opposed to the conventional matchup against an undermanned Illinois team which USC eventually destroyed.

The rub here is a) scheduling and b)money. UGA home games are worth reportedly as much as $7million a game and UGA isn’t willing to give up a second gate in a year (they already have the Jax offsite game). So Damon had said and I’m sure the current and new A/D will hold that UGA would be willing to do the Dome Kickoff game only on seasons where we have the additional home game so we don’t lose a gate, or the CFA Kickoff Committee has to agree to make up the lost revenue.

GA is in no shape of form to take on USC or any other nationally ranked team! What a Joke! Win a few NC’s and your conference for 3 or 4 times in a row before you want to venture out!

I agree with 82Dawg. Ga vs. Penn State would be a great start. And don’t give Kiffin a shot at embarassing Tenn again. Let him fall on his face against PAC-10 (?) teams. I am betting Oregon kicks their butt this year. GA beat ND when it counted so that’s not much of a challenge. MI should go ahead and fire their coach and start rebuilding. All the good atheletes in MI are playing hockey.

Both UGA and Tech would love to play in this game for a few reasons:

1. national exposure
2. keeping other schools out of the state

Though I like the idea of the game and I am a big fan of Chick-fil-A (both the food and the company structure, etc), this game allows other schools to come into our backyard and gain a foothold in recruiting. Richt and Johnson both resent this.

For the record, this season was originally supposed to be a matchup between Auburn and UCLA, but Auburn decided UCLA wasn’t quite easy enough and opted to play their usual creampuff schedule.

Then Tech was substituted for Auburn, but UCLA didn’t want to play Tech in Atlanta.

UNC/LSU will still be a good matchup, but the 2012 Tennessee/NC State is not very exciting at all.

Move this game to Florida and let those teams lose their recruiting edge.

As for USC, I agree with others that they should NOT be given the opportunity to play here. They were put on probation for BREAKING THE RULES, and allowing them to come play here would give them bowl-like exposure, which they are supposed to be deprived of while on probation.

You can smell the desperation in Kiffin.

I don’t want to see USC in that game at all…they are on probation and their only reason for playing in that game would be to get exposure in the south via television. They won’t have a bowl game, so they are pushing for this to have something. Here’s hoping Lane doesn’t get any…
