Stokan denies Georgia-USC rumor

A hot rumor spread from the West Coast on Wednesday that the USC football team would come to Atlanta to play Georgia in the 2011 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game. (It spread the new-fashioned way, from Twitter to message boards.) But Gary Stokan, the game’s president, denied the rumor when I called to ask him about it Wednesday night.

He said there have been talks with USC about a possible appearance in the 2011 game — but not, he said, against Georgia.

“Georgia is not a possibility for 2011,” Stokan said.

He said UGA, through former athletic director Damon Evans, expressed interest in playing in the season-opening game in the Georgia Dome at some point in the future but indicated the next few years wouldn’t work schedule-wise.

Georgia is scheduled to open the 2011 season against Louisville in Athens.

As for USC, Stokan said Trojans coach Lane Kiffin sent him a text message in February to suggest a 2011 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game matchup against his former team, Tennessee. “It’d be a great storyline,” Stokan quoted Kiffin as telling him in a subsequent phone conversation. Stokan said new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley later told him he’d be willing to play USC in Atlanta — after he has three years or so to get his program established.

The bottom line, Stokan said, is that the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game still doesn’t have a 2011 matchup.

“We don’t have an opponent [for USC],” Stokan said. “We don’t have USC either.”

Stokan does have matchups for 2010 (LSU-North Carolina on Sept. 4) and 2012 (Tennessee-N.C. State).

++++++++++++++++

Speaking of scheduling: Georgia hasn’t finalized or announced its 2010-11 basketball schedule yet, but the Bulldogs will open the season at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 in the new-look Stegeman Coliseum against Mississippi Valley State. That’s according to a schedule posted on the MVSU website.

Alright dawg fans……………you guys sounding like you “might” be scared of USC. Just think of all the westcoast exposure. LK is going to be the coach at USC until he leaves, so there is nothing the SEC will be able to do about that. But everytime the opportunity arises, the SEC should jump at a chance to kick his ass. That in itself will send a message to all the kids here in the south that USC/PAC-10/PAC-12 cannot match the SEC.

Tony Barnhart discussed UGA and UF non-conference scheduling in regards to the neutral site UGA-UF. His take was that this being a neutral site as opposed to a typical home and home would make it very difficult financially to have a 2nd neutral site. This would necessitate scheduling one less home game that particular year.

Hal

dear Ummmm, UGA isn’t scared of USC. QUite the opposite really. If you’ll recall the ‘07 season when Damon Evans and UGA guaranteed the Rose Bowl a sell out if they’d take UGA/USC as opposed to the conventional matchup against an undermanned Illinois team which USC eventually destroyed.

The rub here is a) scheduling and b)money. UGA home games are worth reportedly as much as $7million a game and UGA isn’t willing to give up a second gate in a year (they already have the Jax offsite game). So Damon had said and I’m sure the current and new A/D will hold that UGA would be willing to do the Dome Kickoff game only on seasons where we have the additional home game so we don’t lose a gate, or the CFA Kickoff Committee has to agree to make up the lost revenue.

Both UGA and Tech would love to play in this game for a few reasons:

1. national exposure
2. keeping other schools out of the state

Though I like the idea of the game and I am a big fan of Chick-fil-A (both the food and the company structure, etc), this game allows other schools to come into our backyard and gain a foothold in recruiting. Richt and Johnson both resent this.

For the record, this season was originally supposed to be a matchup between Auburn and UCLA, but Auburn decided UCLA wasn’t quite easy enough and opted to play their usual creampuff schedule.

Then Tech was substituted for Auburn, but UCLA didn’t want to play Tech in Atlanta.

UNC/LSU will still be a good matchup, but the 2012 Tennessee/NC State is not very exciting at all.

Move this game to Florida and let those teams lose their recruiting edge.

Playing out of conference games proves nothing except if you should screw up and lose, you are done, so why take the chance of dashing a shot to play in the big game? Until Div 1 wakes up and has a playoff system, I would not schedule tough games as it proves nothing. BTW, FL plays FL State on their last game every year. Therefore, if they should lose that game, that most likely would dash their hopes of playing for a NC. With that being said, they have nothing to prove since they already play in the hardest conference in the nation. They play TN, GA, SC, LSU, KY, Vandy, & FL State, every year and rotate with the West with Alabama, Auburn, Miss State, and Ole Miss. They do not have to prove anything as when they play their bowl game, they normally win big. Does the Sugar Bowl last year ring a bell?

Look back at UT’s games last year and you’ll see only OL Miss soundly beat them. It wasn’t a tallent thing but an attitude adjustment that he gave his players. It would have been interesting to see what UT’s program would have looked like under Kiffin in his third or forth year. A case could be made that he was brought to USC to take the fall for their program or another could be made that the pressure has been taken off of him to maintain the status flo of this program due to the NCAA investigations. So what Lane Kiffin would be saying by trying for a USC/UGA game is I beat you at Tennessee with less tallent and I can beat you at USC with my hands tied by the NCAA because it’s not the players I have but the coaching that is better.

Realize playing a USC-West team with a year-two, Charlie Strong (that is where he went, ain’t it?) coached, Louisville team back-to-back would be a tough one…and who knows if either of our running backs won’t have turned pro…but I’d still love to see Georgia be the one that took some revenge on Lame Lane. Sure it would be far more fitting for it to be Tennessee, and frankly I think that Derek would win points with the Tennessee faithful by taking the game next year, regardless of the outcome. If his team gets whipped then he’s got a built-in excuse – too soon to have rebuilt from the mess that Kiffin left…but if he wins…if he wins…can you imagine? Hell they’d rename Rocky Top to ‘Derek D’ – after all it already rhymes with Tennessee. Plus, think about it, chances are that Papa Kiffin will have hung it up by then, or croaked or something. Shoot, Lane may have even been run off for Lame-like conduct. Either way, if I know my UT friends, some of ‘em would just like to know that Lame is in the neighborhood and where he’s stayin’. Plus, the Dome will be a sight – Rocky Top when UT scores, and the loudest chorus of BOOOOsss ever heard when, and if, USC does.

My only question is why would the NCAA allow that bunch to play in an ‘extra’ game in the first place? It’s better than a bowl game in that it gets national attention for a program that’s supposed to be paying a price for it’s ‘institutional control’ issues – plus barring ‘em could be the price that Lame should pay for his role in failing to know what everybody else did regarding that Bush guy – and even if they didn’t know they should have suspected something with a name like that….heh, heh.

Previous AJC interview with Richt

July 29th, 2010
9:54 am

I knew this was a bogus rumor because I remember an interview with Richt just a couple of years ago in the AJC. Georgia was about to travel to play ASU and it was Georgia’s first noncon game outside of the southeastern US in over 50 years. The AJC noted that UGA had scheduled bcs weaklings ASU and Colorado and asked if UGA was planning on scheduling heavyweights like USC. Richt’s reply verbatim was “Um, no. We don’t want to do that”

Georgia will never step up and play the true heavyweights in a conference like USC in the pac 10, Ohio State or Penn State in the big 10, VT in the Acc, Texas or OU in the big 12, etc. It aint gonna happen. They’re satisfied playing the middle tier or bottom dwellers in bcs conferences like Colorado(4 straight losing seasons-3-9 last year), ASU(when’s the last time these guys won anything), and Ok state(lotta preseason hype last year but didn’t even finish in top 25 and has never even won its division-ever!). Georgia just won’t play the big boys. They just won’t.

THE WAY UGA SCHEDULES… WHY NOT UGA vs. WOFFORD IN THE KICKOFF CLASSIC? OR FLORIDA vs. FLORIDA TECH OR LSU vs. TULANE OR TEXAS vs. NORTH TEXAS STATE? OH WAIT, THE LAST 3 WOULD NEVER HAPPEN SINCE FLORIDA, LSU AND TEXAS MIGHT HAVE TO LEAVE THEIR HOME STADIUM BEFORE OCTOBER 15…

SEC= SAD Excuses Conference !

July 29th, 2010
9:55 am

Say what you may- good comment. UGA and most SEC schools don’t schedule OOC games against big time schools because they are scared of losing and dashing their championship hopes . The University of Southern California and Kiffin would crush UGA just like they did Auburn and Arkansas. I give credit for Auburn and Arkansas in playing them though they both got crushed. The rest of the schools in the SEC especially Florida are scared to go out of Conference.Their excuse is “We play in the big bad SEC and we don’t need to play them “. Also stop scheduling Div 1-AA and Div II opponents to add to your win totals every year. If you guys think the SEC is the best, then play the best teams in the country and TRAVEL (fly longer than an hour) out of state to play them. Scheduling Louisville and Colorado, PLEASE! Colorado almost embarrassed you at home 4 years ago and they were terrible. You will never see UGA or Florida play at Michigan, at Ohio State, at Notre Dame, at Southern Cal, at Stanford, at Penn State, at Oregon, at Miami, at Florida State during the regular season. Won’t happen. Scared !

Bama in Atlanta

July 29th, 2010
9:59 am

My question is why is Lame Kitten being asked to schedule a game a year from now?!? With his track record he will either be fired for his obvious incompetence or will leave town in the middle of the night to take his “real dream job” of coaching his old high school football team…..only to leave them a year later to pursue his “really real dream job” of coaching his old Pop Warner kiddie team!

Another reason Lame won’t come to the Georgia Dome is that he knows once he crosses the Mississippi the bloodhounds and Volunteers will be on him faster than a buzzard on a gut wagon. I’m a Bama grad and certainly look at the Vols as a big rivalry but what Lame did to them was worse than Ned Beatty’s treatment in Deliverance. Maybe it’s apropos that he left to go to the “Trojans”!

This guy only has two things going for him, a hot wife and a father who actually knows how to coach football. Once his dad retires and his wife realizes she married a mental pygmy with a tan then he will disappear faster than a Bernie Madoff retirement fund. If Stokan wants Southern Cal in the 2011 Kickoff Bowl then he should ask Steve Spurrier because after this season Spurrier will leave Carolina and still want to coach but will not want to change the monogram on the university towels he stole.

While all you idiots talk about the SEC not playing tought OOC games, try to remember we have won the last 4 NCs and all 7 NCs we’ve played in. We don’t play tough OOC games b/c our conference is the toughest in college football. It makes sense that teams in the big 10, pac 10 and acc schedule hard OOC games, b/c their own conferences are lame.

Tom Davis, USC is the University of South Carolina. We were here first in 1803 and the west coast USC did not happen until the 1870s. I am ok with calling both schools USC, but we are THE USC. I would love to see my team play my 2nd favorite team, Notre Dame. Agree also that a UGA/Clemson game would be great. It used to be a great rivalry and the only time I side with Clemson. SEC= SAD Excuses Conference ! ,

Yeah, USC may have beaten up on the inferior teams in the SEC those years, but they can’t even rule the roost in their own conference. May have a ton of Pac-10 Championships, but look at the competition. What I’m getting at is that USC can’t even get out of the Pac-10 unscathed, much less beat an SEC team in a bowl game. USC was good, i agree, but they aren’t good enough to handle the Alabama’s, Florida’s, LSU’s, Auburn’s, and Georgia’s week in week out, you gotta throw a Stanford, Arizona, Arizona State, Washington, Washington State, UCLA in there. Wait that’s half the conference to beat up on and build a bowl eligible resume. Ahh what the heck, play with some more illegal players and win another championship to pad the stats.

every citizen in the state of florida knows the gators took the canes of their schedule for a reason. gators had frequently struggled against the canes.

i frankly disagree. if they played the CFA kick-off this september, canes would pound the gators.

miami has just about every starter back from last year.

gators lost a ton of starters on both off & def from lastyear.

gators got lots of sec referee “gimmes” vs. arkansas and missy state last year.

Hey Lowcountry Bulldawg and your point is?

If GA is DUMB enough to schedule OOC games with top teams then go for it, but again, this proves nothing as they (GA) are not an elite program. Win your conference, then, hopefully, have a shot at playing for a NC. Otherwise, I find all of this smack-talk useless especially when it comes to trying to downplay a Florida program that is one of the ELITE programs in the nation. They have backed this up by winning 3 NC’s against OOC teams.

Again, the Gators will win big in Jax in 2010, and win the East with EASE!

No amount of TV revenue, ticket revenue or toursim dollars will be worth bringing that low-life back into the southeast to commit more ncaa penalties and have free upfront recruiting to our athletes by playing in such a big game in ATL. Tech Buzz,

Georgia isn’t scared to play anyone, and has opened it’s out of conference to atleast the likes of Arizona State, Colorado, Oklahoma State, Oregon, and Louisville. How on Earth can you talk? Look at what Tech has on its world beater schedule, South Carolina State, Middle Tennessee, and a Kansas team that is three years removed from being a contender. Notre Dame and Auburn a few years ago was a good call for Tech, but that’s all y’all have. Not to mention the high school schedule of NC State, Duke, Virginia (whom y’all can’t beat in Charlottesville), Wake Forest, etc.

I know Georgia fans talk a ton or garbage and some trash back in our faces is warranted, but Georgia Tech has no leg to stand on in any conversation that involves an SEC team. Especially when y’all are 1 in your last 8 against the Dawgs. I lived with two Tech grads, and they never said a word the last week of the season, but after the bowl kicking y’all always seem to take, y’all all get riled up again thinking it’ll be y’alls year. No wonder y’alls hatred for Clemson is so much, y’all both have to figure out whose the years biggest bust year in year out.

Admittedly, this year’s OOC games don’t appear to be as tough as last…don’t tell my Tech friends I said that, they think they’re ‘baaadddd’ – or at least as bad as their ‘bada$$-mouthed’ coach…but regardless, and you’ve heard before, playing an SEC regular season schedule – with away games with (The) USC, Miss State, Auburn, Kentucky and Florida (Jville ain’t been ‘neutral’ since Vince), plus a Colorado away – you know that team that when we scheduled ‘em had just hired the hottest coach on the planet, and the team that actually won that NC that Tech lays claim to – is tough enough, so throwing in a Louisiana Lafayette (I love the Ragin’ Cajuns) every now and then is understandable – just like every other BCS team that needs to have, at least, half their games at home so they can make money.

As for those ‘others’, we’ve played the Ohio States, the Texas’s, the Notre Dames, the Michigan States, the FSUs…shoot, we even went up to Ann Arbor one year to open with a Michigan team that was favored to win the NC that year – beat ‘em too. Of course many will say that that was ancient history so it doesn’t count. Well playin’ in the toughest conference in the country year-after-year ain’t ancient history, so we’ll schedule ‘em when, and how, it makes sense.

And I’d still like to see us play Lame Lane’s team.

From a national championship standpoint, why would UGA or any powerhouse SEC team schedule other big games? They already have a tough schedule as it is not to mention the week to week tax on the players getting banged up. Teams already play ala, fl, ut, auburn, lsu, ark, week in and week out. In the state of Georia, there is one powerhouse: Georgia State, they got All star QB, plently of good players transfering. UGA got a freshy as a QB with no expereince beside high school, Aaron Murray or w/e. Tech is a fluke college, they even got manhandled by the UGA. Too bad Florida and Alabama owns those schools.

Texas Tea, with the stupid round robin schedule the Pac 10 likes to play USC only has 3 games it can schedule every year. Notre Dame always gets one of those games because of tradition. The last three years they have also scheduled Ohio St twice, and Nebraska when they were a top 15 team. Also, Ohio State just won the rose bowl, would that not be considered a game of relevance? Are you one of those SEC fans that thinks that all college football outside of the southeast is meaningless?

Miami vs Florida (since 2000):

2001: Miami beats Florida 37-20 in Sugar Bowl
2002: Miami beats Florida 41-16
2003: Miami beats Florida 38-33
2004: Miami beats Florida 27-10 in Peach Bowl
2008: Florida beats Miami 26-3

The 2008 Florida win was the FIRST win over Miami since 1985.

From ESPN:

“They(Miami & Florida) used to play every year, but the Gators dropped Miami in 1988 because they wanted to play a “more national schedule.” Florida promptly replaced the Hurricanes with Montana State.”

No I am not one of those, but I do believe the SEC is the best brand of football in the country. Ohio State is 0 for the SEC, and has lost how many National Title games? And they are always overrated. When was the last time they had a big marquise win? Beating Texas, when Texas lost to Kansas State and Texas A&M that same year isn’t huge, but I’ll accept it. Nebraska is working it’s way back to relevance, but has yet to prove they can hang like in the Tom Osborn days. Please come back to the table when you have a legitimate argument as to why you believe USC is so much better than the SEC.

Every big name school in the SEC needs to schedule easier opponents the 1st 2 or 3 games until their teams get use to playing again. UGA would be fools to schedule a big name opponent in the 1st game. This has nothing to do with being scared but with the conferences outside of the SEC only having to play 2 or 3 real hard games all year let them schedule the kick off game. If the big name schools of the SEC wants to play another big name outside the SEC it ok later in the season. But don’t lose your 1st game because the team isn’t quite set yet and at the end of the season the polls have you ranked 5th or 6th and out of the championship game because teams like Utah, Boise State or any team from an easier conference are undefeated .

I was born and bred in the South, family has been here since the 1840’s, yet I always thought USC was Univ of Southern California. To me South Carolina is South Carolina. I believe Southern Cal has rights to USC and SC for which South Carolina pays rights to use.

As for Georgia playing Southern Cal, I say let’s do it. S Cal will NOT be a force, they are already down to 71 scholarshipped players due to transfers, backouts, injuries. It will only get worse from here. 2011 will be a loaded season for the Dawgs.

Do the UGA critics talking about Arizona State, OK State, and Colorado being lower half of conference teams not realize most OOC are booked years in advance? It could be that when these home and home series were agreed upon that ASU, OSU, or CO were having better years. Take our upcoming series with Louisville. When we booked that, Louisville was having their best run ever, I believe. Who can help that they have taken a step backwards, recently? At least when we book these games, there is a chance that the teams will be quality teams. As opposed to scheduling consistently weak teams, which seems to be the standard at many schools.

Too FINISH : Southern Cal and the rest of the Pacific10 conference champion has to play a easier opponent from the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl and some times that’s ok but many years the SEC 2nd or 3rd place teams would be a better match up with Pacific 10. The way it is set up if the Pacific 10 winner is undefeated or only one lost then they could be one of the national championship opponents and the SEC champion could get left out because they have 1 or 2 loses. We don’t ever want another team like Auburn in 2004 to be left out when the Pacific 10 doesn’t even play a championship game.Every reasonable college fan in 2004 knew the best team in America at the end of 2004 was Auburn. The media wanted to see a match with USC and Okla. quarterbacks and money made that match up happen. We need a playoff system of 8 teams and then you would get a true champion as long as the SEC can end up with with 2 or 3 teams in the 8 playoff teams if they deserve it.

JOKE TECH’s OOC had a record of 32-17 and UGA’s had a record of 21-28 with TECH having 11 of those wins. So. Carolina St was 10-2 and lost to 2 big time schools and has the FCS “Heisman” Walter Payton Award #1 canidate. Kansas was 5-7, Mid Tenn St was 10-3, and UGA was 8-5. Now UGA OOC teams La. Laf 6-6, Colorado 3-9, Idaho St 1-10, and TECH 11-3.

Now joke coke sniffer tell me how GT’s ooc is weak compared to UGA’s?

TECH has DUKE 5-7, UGA has Miss St. 5-7, TECH has NCSU 5-7, UGA has VANDY 2-10.

The best reason to play an OOC team like Arizona St., Colorado, Oregon, or Oklahoma State is that you get to take a really nice trip in the Fall. I went to the Arizona State game in Phoenix and had a great time. Every Bulldog that went had a great time. As a matter of fact, we would have had a great time even if we had lost.

This year we are going to Colorado and are planning on doing a lot more things than just going to a football game. The game is the reason for the trip, but as long as you are there, travel around and see the sights.

Looking at the Florida schedule, their best OOC game this year is, “well” they don’t have an OOC game this year. To bad for them and their fans.

Experience (and lack of) on the O-line

Georgia is at the head of the class in the SEC, and it’s really not even close.

The Bulldogs return four players with more than 20 career starts on the offensive line, and their five projected starters coming out of the spring combined for 127 starts.

That’s almost 20 more starts than second-place Auburn, which has 108 career starts among its five projected starters.

Georgia’s numbers look even better when you throw junior tackle Trinton Sturdivant into the mix. He’s started 14 career games, but only one in the past two seasons because he’s battled knee injuries. Sturdivant started 13 games in 2007 as a true freshman left tackle. He hopes to return this season.

Georgia and Auburn are the only two SEC teams whose projected offensive line starters combine for 100 or more career starts.

While Georgia’s at the top with 127 starts, Tennessee’s at the bottom with only three career starts.

Auburn senior left tackle Lee Ziemba has started in every game since his freshman season in 2007 — a streak of 38 straight games — which is the most in the SEC for an offensive lineman.

Even though offensive line experience is important, there are exceptions. Alabama had one of the best offensive lines in the nation last season. The five guys who wound up being the starters had a combined 41 career starts entering the season. But here’s the catch: Two players (left guard Mike Johnson and right tackle Drew Davis) had all 41 of those starts.

Here’s a breakdown of the entire league. Keep in mind these are only projected starters going into preseason camp and that some of these names could change:

1. Georgia: 127 (Chris Davis 37, Clint Boling 36, Ben Jones 23, Cordy Glenn 22, Josh Davis 9)

2. Auburn: 108 (Lee Ziemba 38, Ryan Pugh 31, Mike Berry 21, Byron Isom 18, Brandon Mosley 0)

3. Arkansas: 87 (DeMarcus Love 24, Wade Grayson 23, Ray Dominguez 20, Seth Oxner 13, Grant Cook 7)

4. Mississippi State: 82 (J.C. Brignone 24, Quentin Saulsberry 24, Derek Sherrod 22, Addison Lawrence 12, Tobias Smith 0)

5. Florida: 79 (Mike Pouncey 31, Carl Johnson 22, Marcus Gilbert 17, Xavier Nixon 5, James Wilson 4)

6. South Carolina: 52 (Jarriel King 19, T.J. Johnson 13, Terrence Campbell 11, Kyle Nunn 7, Garrett Chisolm 2)

7. Alabama: 42 (James Carpenter 14, Barrett Jones 14, William Vlachos 14, D.J. Fluker 0, Chance Warmack 0)

8. LSU: 41 (Joseph Barksdale 26, Josh Dworaczyk 13, Patrick Lonergan 2, Will Blackwell 0, Alex Hurst 0)

9. Kentucky: 27 (Stuart Hines 13, Brad Durham 7, Jake Lanefski 4, Billy Joe Murphy 3, Larry Warford 0)

10. Vanderbilt: 24 (Kyle Fischer 18, Joey Bailey 5, Ryan Seymour 1, Justin Cabbagestalk 0, Wesley Johnson 0)

11. Ole Miss: 22 (Bradley Sowell 12, Bobby Massie 5, Rishaw Johnson 4, Alex Washington 1, A.J. Hawkins 0)

12. Tennessee: 3 (Jarrod Shaw 3, Ja’Wuan James 0, Cody Pope 0, JerQuari Schofield 0, Dallas Thomas 0)

Again, none of this matters. All Uga comments are meaningless. UGA has settled for a coach who is unable to judge talent. He is unable to select assistants who can help. CMR is inept. The offense CMR runs may have worked at FSU against ACC competition, where FSU had better athletes than any opponent. UGA plays a schedule where everyone has athletes. That means someone has to get down and coach. CMR has coached so poorly that it is embarrasing. Look at the losses to KY, Tenn, Vandy, OK ST, and more. Still@the BAR, I appreciate your comments. It is nice to receive a level headed response. I am not a GT fan, but you are right! Also, I know CPJ a little and his coaching a lot. As a long time UGA fan I will tell you that I would trade CPJ and his staff straight up for CMR and his staff. Don’t get me wrong. THIS is to the ACC v SEC comparison. ACC teams records are 6872-5438-470 for a winning % of 1.859.
SEC teams records are 7790-5302-537 for a winning % of 1.749.
TIE games ACC % .0367
TIE games SEC % .0394
WOW those numbers supprised me. No matter the opponent or number of games the ACC has a better winning % and plays to a tie fewer times.
Take if for what you will. Just stright numbers from history.

Bama in Atlanta

July 29th, 2010
5:37 pm

If Stokan wants Southern Cal in the 2011 Kickoff Bowl then he should ask Steve Spurrier because after this season Spurrier will leave Carolina and still want to coach but will not want to change the monogram on the university towels he stole

Also, if you counted all the Ineligible players on Tennessee (Tee Matin), Florida, Georgia, Alabama, those teams Titles would also be vacated.

I find it funny that USC because they are on the west Coast, had their 2004 title Vacated, yet none of your SEC schools have, I find that very odd. Quit casting stones at USC when your programs have done the same. Your Lucky you have Money and power and in fluence, because if you didn’t, your no more special than USC. Your not anyway, but you get the drift.

You Claim to have the Best Conference, and you usually do for the most part, however, when your best team goes down or 2nd best team, you run to excuses afterwards.

Before Auburn played USC in 2003 at Jordan Hare, all we heard was how will USC compete with a Bigger and faster Sec team? Afterwards and when USC won, suddenly you all changed your tune and said how AUBURN was a Middle of the road team. That not what any of you stated before the game.

Just because you root for the SEC, does not mean that your teams are invincible. Doesn’t mean you know more about the game than anyone else.

Get over yourselves.

No way UGA would go for an opener away from Athens, even the Dome and and an opponent like USC. They would get throttled then the season would once again be over.

UGA has to open at home against smaller schools such as Agnes Scott, FAMU, Gwinnett College, etc. Last year’s loss to OSU on the road just proved the Dogs cannot with the big ones.

Totally agree wiht the ACC comment, just keep that in mind if for some reason you get beat again by that lame/nerd program on North Ave. If you lose to GT, then it only proves you need to call it a day in terms of football. The more you attack GT and the ACC, the more is proves your program sucks if you lose to anyone from the ACC.

Tell you what, why don’t you open with Miami or VT, they would love to have you in Miami or Blacksburg. Go ahead, they are weak, take it to them. By the way, Miami has achieved 5 titles in 25 years and it has taken UGA 117 years to achieve 1 title. Sad, very sad indeed.

Bobo, the reason UGA never opens away from Athens is easily explained. Their offense, defense and special teams are not allowed to leave Athens-Clarke County until after Sept 14th every year, per their annual driving-with-suspended-license and DUI probation requirements.

Mike Bobo 17 INT

WDE, that is true. I also heard that the NCAA is considering suspending them from bowl games this year due to the following rule infraction: Section 12-1-22 “If a team squanders talent for more than 10 years and does not play for a national title in those 10 years, then that team is bowl ineligible.”

Yeah, it’s really foolish to schedule a marquee match-up any time of the football season, come to think of it. Who are the type of teams that schedule good out-of-conference matchups against premier programs? The Floridas (FSU, Miami), Alabama’s, and Tennessee’s of the SEC… all of which have more recent and substantial (aka not satisfied with mere preseason rankings) success than UGA. Auburn got screwed because their OOC schedule sucked in 2004… but at least they won all their games. UGA has proven they are scared of a legitimate schedule, and still manage to be mediocre in the crappy schedules they make. If they could, they would drop Tech favor of another UAB or UL Monroe.

I did football History. because sec fans like history. History says the ACC wins more games than the SEC and the SEC likes to play for ties more often than take a loss. I didn’t call out the SEC playing weak teams of the ACC being in a weak comfranmce. Just when the teams line-up The ACC wins more games and the SEC likes to play for a tie more often. TECH payed for 43 ties and UGA played for 54 ties. UGA fans liked to call Pat Dye Tie Dye but Auburn has only 47 ties in their history. UGA plays weak people and goes for the TIE if they can’t win. HISTORY proves it.

Nobody from the SC camp can talk ANY trash about one being scared of the other. You guys were scared to death of UGA a couple of years ago but you wound up playing a weak Illinois team in the Rose. And before you blame it on the Rose Bowl committee, you’re a representative of the conference that has a say in who you choose to play. If your own conference was scared of us, we know you were. The Rose Bowl committe had UGA reps out there hyping the matchup and then mysteriously chose a 4 loss Illinois team. Hmmmm……

Anyone Anywhere

I like UGA because it seems like lately you have scheduled one OOC game against decent competition (OSU and a middling ASU, but at least you travel out of state; Florida hasn’t play an OOC game outside of Florida since 1991 when they got blown out by Syracuse!) but face it– most of you guys are making excuses on why you shouldn’t play a team that has proven they’ll take on anyone anywhere (see VaTech in DC, Auburn on the Plains, Ohio State at the Horseshoe). Keep it regional, Kiffin and USC shouldn’t be allowed to play, the Pac-10 sucks, etc. The bottom line is this is a backyard game for the ‘Dawgs who will have a decidely homefield advantage and you are scared to play??? Yes, USC would probably smoke UGA. But don’t say in two months that USC was scared. It’s SEC folks making up reasons as why not to.

Anyone Anywhere

Great excuse Preston. Why not check out the BCS system and the traditional PAC-10/Big 10 contract that is in place if the winner of each conference doesn’t make it to the MNC game. Of course that would make sense which would take away from your armchair opinions.

Why would USC want to play the dawgs? The dawgs back out of every hard OOC game ever presented to them. After the OSU game last year the dawgs will never try that again. When UGA made that deal OSU was a joke. W Buffet changed that and beat the coxFULL Defenseless Dawgs. UGA wants to play say an OOC team on the lines of VANDY in the Chic-fil-a kickoff game. If you can get Washington State to play hell the dawgs are all over that game.

Velosh, I imagine you are gone by now and not reading but your revisionist history is a tad off kilter. You’re right, everyone did think that the ‘03 Auburn team was going to be very good, and the USC team was an unknown beast waiting to explode when they got to Auburn. But no one invented the fact that Auburn stunk that year… they did. Look at their record. They were dead on middle of the pack team in the SEC. Heck that same year UGA killed them in Athens. UGA and LSU played for the trophy that year and Auburn didn’t even scare either one of them… USC wouldn’t have either.

THINK…like Gary Stokan. Landmark oppty.

If you’re Gary Stokan, you will D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y
want a USC vs UGA CFA Kick-Off match-up.

Here’s why:

Chik-Fil-A is obviously THE corporate sponsor for this game,
as well as the CFA Bowl in December.

Currently, there are ONLY 6 (Yes, count them) 6 Chik-Fil-A
franchises…in the ENTIRE State of California !!!!

The Metro Atlanta area ALONE has about 20+ CFA franchises.

So, if Stokan can get a HUGE NUMBER of California-based USC fans to travel to Georgia for the game, enjoy a Chik-Fil-A sandwich for what would likely be TENS OF THOUSANDS of FIRST-TIME California-based customers, then that would probably create an OVERWHELMING NEW DEMAND for NEW CFA franchises in California.

Win or Lose, all those USC fans would would go back home thinking…”Damn, that was the GREATEST CFA sandwich in the world”
how come we dont have a CFA franchise in OUR California neighborhood.”

The demand for CFA franchise opptys in California would EXPLODE, practically overnight.

And, a new CFA franchise probably costs upwards of $1+ Million just to buy, on top of the life-time franchise and royalties fess.

You’re talking potentially…
HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS IN NEW REVENUE TO CFA !!!!

So, the bottom-line is this:

Put aside the fact that EVERY SINGLE SEC fan would turn out
just to hate on Lane Kiffin, and express their universal derision for him.

A USC vs UGA match-up has the potential to bring in
HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of NEW dollars to CFA. And, a lot of those new dollars will likely end up being spent on the CFA Kick-Off Claasic, the CFA Bowl, and many many other Atlanta-based sporting events. And, you know Gary Stokan would love to see that hapen.

Robert Woodruff made Coca-Cola into a GLOBAL house-hold and a UNIVERSAL BRAND. CFA has the same unique oppty, RIGHT HERE…RIGHT NOW, with a USC vs UGA match-up.

UGA would have a practically ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME oppty to NATIONALLY BRAND their program in front of what would be a RECORD-SMASHING TV audience.

A M-A-J-O-R…M-A-J-O-R business/branding oppty
is ridinng on this for CFA.

A M-A-J-O-R…M-A-J-O-R branding/branding oppty
is also ridinng on this for UGA.

I will be V-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-RY surpirsed if Stokan
does not pull this off.

Frankly, there’s much to be achieve by making this game happen.

I will consider it a SLAM-DUNK DONE DEAL..until proven otherwise.

I think there is a team that fits perfectly to face Georgia in the ACC Chick Fil A Classic that really hasn’t been flying under the radar. Here lets cut down the teams that should play.

Clemson, VT, and North Carolina have already played in the Chick Fil A Classic so I don’t think they should get the 2011 spot that leaves 9 teams.

Miami and Florida State already got match ups set for their 2011 opener so take them out and that leaves 7.

I don’t think the ACC would want a low level team like Duke or Virgina to represent them so that leaves 5.

NC State already plays in 2011 and Georgia already Said they don’t want to Play GT in the Chick Fil A game because its a team they play often so that leaves 3.

Wake Forest, Boston College, Maryland. Which team? BC. Why? simple ever since they have joined the ACC they have flown under the radar never ended worse then 2nd in the Atlantic and at one point won 9 straight bowl games and held there own against USC in the Emerald Bowl Last year.

Georgia vs Boston College is what I would like to see.
