Young UGA QB surrounded by experience on offense

Georgia’s starting quarterback has never played in a college game, but the extensive experience around him has Mark Richt notably enthused about the Bulldogs’ offense.

“I’d much rather have that kind of maturity around a young quarterback than a very veteran quarterback surrounded by a bunch of puppies,” Richt told the Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club this week.

Particularly comforting to Richt is the experience on the offensive line, where senior Chris Davis has 37 career collegiate starts, senior Clint Boling 36, junior Ben Jones 23, junior Cordy Glenn 22 and senior Josh Davis 9. That’s a combined 127 starts.

Boling, Jones and Glenn have started since their true freshman seasons and Chris Davis since his redshirt freshman season.

“They played before they should have had to play,” Richt said, “but now they’re mature. They’re so much more ready for these games. They’re bigger; they’re stronger; they’re wiser. They have the confidence to know they can play in any SEC venue and have success.  When you’re breaking in a young quarterback, that’s very important.”

Richt also feels good about the experience elsewhere on offense.

He has a senior tandem at fullback in starter Shaun Chapas and backup Fred Munzenmaier. “I can’t think of a better fullback combination in the country,” Richt said.

The tailback tandem is less experienced -– sophomore Washaun Ealey (two starts) and junior Caleb King (five starts) –- but Richt expects them to build on their confidence-inspiring successes of late last season.

“Washaun Ealey a year ago was kind of a chubby kid and didn’t really know what to do; he wasn’t in great condition,” Richt said. “But now he’s in tremendous condition and knows what to do. And we  got Caleb King starting the season healthy, and he’s going to make a difference.”

Richt also expressed optimism about the mix of talent and experience at wide receiver, led by junior A.J. Green, and tight end.

Someone else should be comforted by all of this experience: Aaron Murray, the redshirt freshman quarterback who will be playing in his first college game on Sept. 4.

Big Earl

Im stating facts too

Do us a favor tell your coaches to take a page from Saban and learn to play your team down and go beat someone down on the field instead of talking a bunch of “we got this going for us crap” and get your butts handed to you by good teams

Fish Fry…your right but not all the way…Tech ranks 5th in the ACC in terms of academics but that’s not really a bad thing. Look at the schools that make up the ACC….UNC, Duke, Virginia, and Wake Forest are tip top liberal arts schools with top ranked law schools and top ranked medical schools…if GT was in the SEC they would only be second to Vanderbilt. Tech is absolutely one of the finest academic institutions in the nation with top ranked programs in engineering, science, architecture, and surprisingly business. They routinely rank in the top ten of all public institutions and are among the national leaders in research conducted. People from all across the world would not come to Atlanta if Tech was not a world renowned school…who cares what some nimrod from UGA thinks…I have a UGA and Tech degree…give Tech its due respect…they truly are an academic power house…a very valuable asset to the state of Georgia. UGA is important too as they produce the lawyers and other valuable professions that keep our bureaucracy running. The research conducted and the engineers that are produced at GT travel across the country and world…people know what Georgia Tech is…they know a GT grad is likely to be a “bright” person…its kind of ironic that they get more respect outside of the state of Georgia. Both schools are great institutions but GT is world renowned..they all have their important place in our state…with out GT…Georgia truly would be the laughing stock of the nation…engineers are necessary…just like doctors and lawyer…they all serve their place…I dont know why it has to be a contest though. No shame in a degree from either school.

Reality Check…what a pus-y you are. Give me a break …who cares what your cousin in Alabama and N. Carolina said..are you kidding me. You have got to be only 10 or 12 years old…Bama fans pointing fingers at UGA?…. we’re laughing at you in the office right now…N. Carolina? when was the last time they won anything in football?…thier best players leave the state every year.
90% of the people on this blog don’t know sh-t about CMR, Tech, Florida or Bama…it’s only thier opinion…and you know what they say about opinions don’t you?… I’m surprised that all the Florida fans aren’t football coaches somewhere…they all sound like they got all the answers. And those Tech fans really sound like children with inferiority complexes toward Georgia. I’d be willing to bet the Florida fans that at least 30% of the players on the gators roster couldn’t get in Georgia if they tried……Urban Liar has them all taking the same classes taught by the same professors that cater to the Florida football team….Florida is a joke as a school and program….and Urban Liar is an insecure idiot. All his coaches bailed out on him this past year after Tebow left because they coundn’t stand to be around him….he’s a pompous ass who takes credit for everyone elses hard work…he has abosolutely no integrity..but most Florida fans can’t see it because they don’t have any either……So Florida fans and Tech fans I’d be leary of the future…cause when Georgia beats your team this year we dawg fans are going to have a field day pounding on your ass…its gonna happen…believe me…its gonna happen….and deep down inside you know it!

Insect Repellant, you can laugh all you want to, but Alabama and Coach Saban have a clean program, since his first year you do not see multiple arrests at UA like the rogue program in Athens. You UGA fans can bury your head in the sand but everyone else views you as the MiamI Hurricanes from 20 years ago without the championships to back it up. I repeat, I am not a GT fan so quit bashing their program to defect the real truth. Your program is on the decline and will now look at 7-8 wins a year. Nothing wrong with that but it is a shame to win like that without class. UGA has gone down hill since the endzone celebration against UF in 2007. Must be karma or something.

Criticize UGA for not having a national championship under Richt, for only averaging 10 wins a season, for only having 2 SEC titles in 9 years, for only having six Top Ten finishes in 9 years, but to criticize them as being irrelevant makes no logical sense. If they were irrelevant, rivals would not be on here posting that they are irrelevant. How many people go on Vandy or Duke football sites to be critical of them? I would guess it is very few.

By your very presence on this site, you are giving relevance to the Dogs.

You have won 2 SEC championships with 3 appearances under Richt

Thanks to FL losing out those 3 times you would have no appearances because you have yet to beat FL the years you have gone to the SEC championship

If you stupid Dawgs dont wake up to reality and realize the importance of beating FL then your no better than Miss ST

But I guess UGA will continue to stick its chest out by beating Tech but look stupid in their own league

All of you people who blame Cox for last year are clueless – his stats were almost as good as Stafford’s and the reason he threw so many picks is because when you’re behind 21 – 0 in the first quarter you more or less have to abandon the run game and start slinging it – lack of defense will cause a QB to throw a lot more than nesessary and set him up for failure – what you should be saying is THANK GOODNESS for Cox last year because if not for him and some of his unreal scoring binges we would have been 5 – 8 and not 8 – 5. CMR took care of the real problem and dumped the defensive waste material. I agree he should have done it sooner – but – at least it is done now. This year will be better – and for all of you who think that UGA is a midpack program or suddenly irrelevant – you obviously don’t know how to read CMR’s record and stats at UGA – he is an ELITE coach any way you look at it. The Dawgs are loaded and ready – bring it on.

I believe Murray will be the positive surprise of the year in college football, if he stays healthy and the coaches aggressively develop him! My fear is that the staff will try to limit him because we have a good offense around him. Witness the South Carolina game for the last three years. All three years they loaded 7-9 guys in the box (much of the time) and they blitzed us like crazy. They shut down and beat what became the number two team in the country (us) in 07 in Athens (we were 11 at the time, I believe, and we had Moreno and Stafford), and they almost beat us in 08 when we were ranked in the top five. They were pretty effective at shutting down Moreno and Stafford both years. Then in 09, when our staff had little confidence in the rest of the O, we opened it up and went up the field on SC and we lit up the scoreboard. If the staff sits back and tries to run their way through SC, ARK, and MSU, we will likely get stuffed. They are going to have to take it up the field with Murray from day one in my humble opinion.
