Young UGA QB surrounded by experience on offense

Georgia’s starting quarterback has never played in a college game, but the extensive experience around him has Mark Richt notably enthused about the Bulldogs’ offense.

“I’d much rather have that kind of maturity around a young quarterback than a very veteran quarterback surrounded by a bunch of puppies,” Richt told the Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club this week.

Particularly comforting to Richt is the experience on the offensive line, where senior Chris Davis has 37 career collegiate starts, senior Clint Boling 36, junior Ben Jones 23, junior Cordy Glenn 22 and senior Josh Davis 9. That’s a combined 127 starts.

Boling, Jones and Glenn have started since their true freshman seasons and Chris Davis since his redshirt freshman season.

“They played before they should have had to play,” Richt said, “but now they’re mature. They’re so much more ready for these games. They’re bigger; they’re stronger; they’re wiser. They have the confidence to know they can play in any SEC venue and have success.  When you’re breaking in a young quarterback, that’s very important.”

Richt also feels good about the experience elsewhere on offense.

He has a senior tandem at fullback in starter Shaun Chapas and backup Fred Munzenmaier. “I can’t think of a better fullback combination in the country,” Richt said.

The tailback tandem is less experienced -– sophomore Washaun Ealey (two starts) and junior Caleb King (five starts) –- but Richt expects them to build on their confidence-inspiring successes of late last season.

“Washaun Ealey a year ago was kind of a chubby kid and didn’t really know what to do; he wasn’t in great condition,” Richt said. “But now he’s in tremendous condition and knows what to do. And we  got Caleb King starting the season healthy, and he’s going to make a difference.”

Richt also expressed optimism about the mix of talent and experience at wide receiver, led by junior A.J. Green, and tight end.

Someone else should be comforted by all of this experience: Aaron Murray, the redshirt freshman quarterback who will be playing in his first college game on Sept. 4.

Based on sentence structure, incorrect use of adjectives and adverbs, verb tense and incorrect spelling, I actually wonder how many posters on this blog graduated from high school, much less college.

B-ham dog I am not sure what you meant, apparantly you live in Alabama so I do not see how that would be funny. UGA has become irrevelant in the SEC and I know that hurts. The Orlando Columnist was right about UGA being more in line with the Kentucky’s, South Carolinas, etc. Another two or three second tier bowls and maybe some changes will be made.

Right. Sure. Keep kidding yourselves. I’d rather fly on a plane with a first year pilot!
I thought this was the mighty sec. Where’s the logic! If it’s so tough, first year players, especially qb’s have a tough time. It won’t be any different here. That SC game will be loud and ugly for poor Aaron.

Every year it’s the same thing. Last year it was Joe Cox and him being a 5th year Senior and learning from Stafford. It’s the Off line. It’s this and that. It never ends. Keep dreaming retards. You do it every year. 17/20 and you think it will change because of a redshirt freshman qb. By week 3, you will be screaming like last year for someone else to take over.

Mark Richt is the best coach UGA could ever have. A fantastic coach and a fine leader of young men. Better sign him to a long term contract before some other school hires him away. By the way, since Richt says, “what do you want me to do?” is there going to be a drawing before this years UF/UGA game to see who gets to go in the locker room and fire up the team or will a search team be created to find that special someone?

B-Dog, During A recent visit to the States of Alabama and North Carolina I encountered relatives and engaged in a discussion about college football. When the topic of UGA football came up, both parties from said states began to make fun of UGA and called it an outlaw school with no disciplne. Just like most UGA fans, you point out some meaningless english infraction to cover up the real issue. I will make sure and proofread for english errors next time, NOT.

The last time UGA started a freshman quarterback during a season they lost 4 times, and that was with the future number one pick in the draft. There is no reason to expect Aaron Murray to be any better. And based on his height, or lack thereof, no one will ever confuse him with being the number one pick in the draft. Get ready UGA fans for a lot of 9 man front because your QB will not be able see over the lineman to throw those quick slants on blitzes.

Lilburn Dawg – Kind of sensitive, aren’t we? You and your family are prime example of why UGA degrees are worth so little, you have to get a graduate degree just to get a job. I’m not saying that UGA alumni can’t get good jobs, they just can get good jobs with a UGA bachelor degree – WORTHLESS. You’re better off going to Athens technical college. However, UGA law school, MBA program – pretty good. But UGA’s undergraduate degrees are LAUGHABLE.

Long time dawg fan but I will have to agree with you

I usually try to take the approach of “The outside looking in” concept and your right

As a dawg fan Im tired of listening to the crap. I argued with so many UGA fans last year when they talked about Richard Samuel was going to be really good, and I kept telling them he is not a running back

Same thing with Willie Martinez for years I said this guy cannot coach and the first of last yr and the yr before that I was called everything under the sun

Well enough is enough stop talking the crap, what is so funny I dont here this crap comming from Meyer or Saban they just go out and play.

Let me splain Lucy…..because FLA has whipped our a$$ so much in the past few years we’ve still got red marks on our collective butts. Ya see…..we get that. What I don’t get, is why there are so many tech fans talking SO MUCH trash over 1….that’s one…..uno……win in 9 freakin years?

The rivalry is great and there are a ton of classy tech folks out there. Do some of you know how utterly insane you sound? Yes, I know there are many of my fellow dawgs that bark entirely too much and a lot of them never went to school there……..but dam…….I guess it’s just beyond my comprehension.

The New Orleans Saints have a qb by the name of Drew Brees, you may have heard of him. He’s shorter than murray and if I had to guess their lineman are bigger and taller than ours. He seems to be just fine seeing over the line. (Now that’s a reality check)

As far as comparing matt stafford’s freshman year to murray’s. Murray has an extra year in the system and he has veteran players around him. Reality Check when you have a legit argument come back and talk I’ll be here.

Another reference to UGA fans being “delusional.” If you don’t think every fan base has delusional fans, then you probably buy “I’m from the government and I’m here to help you,” or “The check is in the mail.”

Today’s examples of delusional fans show how far back this thing has been going on. Back before the internet, in 1980 you had Bama fans calling Atlanta talk radio and claiming their recruit Lenny Patrick was as good as UGA incoming Herschel Walker. Needless to say, that sort of thing stopped after 1980.

Second example, also referring to Bama. From hearing them gush over QB recruit Freddie Kitchens, I am guessing I missed his induction into the College Hall of Fame.

Yes, Gators you have delusional fans also. Forgive us if we insist you play the season before being crowned national champs, and giving Brantley the Heisman.

FYI to all Florida posters: Both Brantley and Murray are first time starters. Brantley was a Rivals 4 star and Scout 4 star recruit; Murray was a Rivals 4 star and Scout 5 star recruit. Granted, only the way you play on Saturdays counts, but these ratings do matter to both of us. If you’ll remember, you gators wanted Murray something fierce! Just one question … why did you want him so bad if he wasn’t any good? I like our chances this year with Murray.

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, and now Damon Evans, the UGA Athletic Department is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for your University or your Athletic Department, and that is a fact. It has been said many times: “Tech people are proud of their school, Georgia people are proud of their football team.” What a legacy to be proud of!

UGA fans can now return to your mobile home parks and resume waiting for your unemployment checks.
