(Click here for lots of notes from last night’s Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club meeting.)
Georgia linebacker Akeem Dent, a projected starter, had surgery early this morning on an injured toe and is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks, UGA said.
That timeline means Dent will miss most, if not all, of preseason practice and makes him questionable for the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Georgia said Dent injured his left big toe in an off-field accident last week. Details on the injury were not released.
Dent had outpatient surgery performed at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens by orthopedic physician Dr. Joe Johnson, the UGA football team’s foot and ankle specialist.
The surgery came on the morning after coach Mark Richt told the Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club that the team seemed set to enter preseason camp “the healthiest we’ve been since I’ve been at Georgia.”
Dent, a senior from Atlanta, came out of spring practice No. 1 on Georgia’s depth chart at strong-side inside linebacker. which Georgia calls the “Mike” linebacker. Sophomore Mike Gilliard and senior Akeem Hebron were Nos. 2 and 3 on the depth chart behind Dent at that position.
At the weak-side inside-linebacker spot, called the “Mo” position, redshirt sophomore Christian Robinson emerged from spring practice as the starter, with junior Marcus Dowtin No. 2 and junior Richard Samuel, a converted tailback, No. 3.
Dent’s injury will lead to some shuffling between the two inside-linebacker spots in preseason practice, which begins next week. If Dent misses the season opener, Robinson and Dowtin likely would start at the two ILB positions.
Dowtin started four games last season, including the wins over Georgia Tech in the regular-season finale and Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl. Dowtin was third on the team in tackles for the season with 57, more than any other returning player.

The word is that Dent was trying to get to his car at the Tech game (on a Thursday night against Poindexter State) and while running from the muggers, he tripped and hurt his toe. Lucky there are never any cars in the parking lot at Tech games or he could have been seriously hurt.

Will this team EVER stay healty again??!! I know injuries are a part of football but we seem to lead the SEC in major injuries to key players. And this one has to come before we ever hit the first time! How many SEC titles would Richt have if we could stay at 70% healthy starters once in a while. Linebacker was already a concern with the switch to the 3-4

What is the left 1st toe? Are we talking about the big toe or little toe? What a dumb description of an injury. My guess is this is the big toe. Dent has a history of injuries unfortunately and he will probably miss the 1st game of the season and likely the 2nd game. It takes a while for a big toe injury to heal.

Obviously Coach Richt is not conditioning the players’ big toes enough. If he were really running a tight ship, we would have mat drills designed to work the big toes and make them the strongest in the SEC. I would have also hoped our coaching staff would have nightly foot inspections to have anticipated this. They don’t call it FOOTBALL for nothing. Coach Myers and Saban do, and do you hear of any big toe problems coming from their LB corp? NO! Just another sign of our program falling down, and we will probably end up losing every game if this continues. Were are the headlines AJC??? UGA FOOT-GATE GROWS LIKE A FUNGUS. Where are the articles from the great columnist around here??? Will the NCAA be investigating Dent’s foot now and interviewing the other 9 toes to see what happened?

Dang it seems Coach Richt could keep an eye on all ten toes of each player. God what kind of coach is he? Seems like he would do a toe check each night. Coach Richt has put up with more crap than all the SEC coaches put together and don’t give me the 42 arrests deal. There is more crap at these other schools, shootings, killings, players selling drugs, players stealing from each other. Yes college athletics does have a problem handling this culture that is creating these problems.

LA-Lafayette is a dangerous team for uga…what a brutal schedule! If they can win this one big they may vault to No. 1. We could have used Dent for this big one. This is also the game where all of the discipline problems will serve Richt’s severe “one game suspension”, so depth may be a problem. If we can only get by this one though we should roll to our first NC in about 40 or 50 years. GO Dawgs!

I wish those of you that keep teasing UGA about having a cream puff schedule would think and realize in a few years when the rotation for the west side of the conference puts ALA. and LSU on our schedule UGA will have one of the hardest schedules in the nation . Enjoy it now while it is here. Also many schools such as OHIO STATE has been living in the top 10 for many years because they have an easy schedule every year. It’s a little embarrassing for UGA because it’s not normal for an SEC team not to have half or more of the schedule that they play in the top 20 teams in America. NOTICE I SAID TOP 20 IN AMERICA NOT THE STUPID POLLS. Many times an SEC team with 4 or 5 loses are better than 3 lost teams in the polls.

Greatful becaue the DAWGS don’t recruit player that can pass real classes. Because CJP went to the pass too early instead of continuing to run the ball. Because UGA fans have nothing better to do than to go to a football game in DA BIG CITY wearing there Sunday best! A football game is an excuse for a DAWG to be drunk infront of the kids and in public. The extra driving while drunk is just a plus.

UGA fans wives hate football games because it means their men can’t kill no deer and bring home food and they just get drunk and chase their daughters thrugh the house.

So that’s what, 4 players coming into the fall returning from some form of injury? We had something like 28 last year that missed the spring or summer, several back from season ending injuries the year before. We will takes some hit in camp as every team will, but this does seem to be the healthiest the Dawgs have gone into August in a long time.

“more protective than a Silverback holding Caleb King close to her brest (sic)”
Just needed to quote another gem from a classy Techie. And you people have the nerve to call US rednecks.

Wonder if it will impact keeping a shirt on Samuel. He is expected to shirt, right???
Don’t know if I’m off-base, but I was under the impression that he was making a rather slow adjustment back to “D”.
Wonder if this just throws him right in it.

Dam stinger…….don’t you get it by now? Noone on here gives a sh!t about what you have to say. The fact that you’re in your underwear running to different computers eating a popsicle shows how freakin pathetic you are. Why don’t you just make fun of red panties cause the only one’s you’ll see are on your mom. Effing moron

And here’s the latest word (not necessarily the final word) on whether tailback-turned-linebacker Richard Samuel will redshirt this fall:
Probably not.
“We think he can help us on special teams also, but he’s going to play scrimmage downs for us,” Richt said. “We were talking about maybe redshirting him at one time, but I doubt very seriously we’ll be able to redshirt him because we need depth and he’s a guy that we think is going to make plays for us.”
Sorry y’all. Didn’t read the whole thing……

Must be a full moon – Burdell, the tech fan, was polite and thoughtful while posting. Glad to see some real Tech FOOTBALL fans appear here.
Also, unless I am the one affected by the full moon, Moronic Tech Fan’s post was a quip…a folly…a jest……a joke – and pretty damn funny I thought. Scary that there are multiple posts on here defending Dent. 4 – 6 weeks puts him back for SC? Assume he would sit the opener if not 100%?
38 and counting – GATA (here’s hoping Grantham makes this legit again) –
GO DAWGS!
