NCAA notice to UGA: One Bulldog under scrutiny (UPDATED)

(Updated 6:50 p.m. )

The NCAA has informed the University of Georgia that investigators will interview one UGA student-athlete “to determine his knowledge of or involvement in, directly or indirectly, any violations of NCAA legislation,” according to a document obtained Monday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The athlete’s name was redacted before the document -– a copy of an e-mail from the NCAA to UGA -– was turned over to the AJC in response to an open-records request.

The e-mail was sent by NCAA Assistant Director of Agent, Gambling and Amateurism Activities Marcus M. Wilson to UGA Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance Eric Baumgartner shortly after the NCAA informed UGA by phone last Wednesday that investigators would come to the Georgia campus to conduct an “inquiry.”

The probe is believed to be the latest in a series of investigations of possible improper benefits received by college football players from sports agents. Investigations also are underway at North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama.

UGA said it removed the athlete’s name from the NCAA e-mail because of a federal law, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which protects the privacy of student education records.

UGA said the NCAA requested an interview with only the one Georgia athlete.

The top NFL prospect on Georgia’s football team, junior wide receiver A.J. Green, said last week that he was asked by UGA officials about an agent-affiliated party in Miami that triggered the NCAA investigations at North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama. Green said he told UGA, as he told reporters, that he has “never” been to Miami.

Green declined to answer other questions about the matter because of instructions from UGA officials, who said the NCAA requested that the school’s officials, coaches and athletes not comment on the investigation.

“In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, please refrain from disclosing the details of the investigation as we discussed with anyone except your athletic director and/or president,” Wilson wrote to Baumgartner. “Should you decide to speak with them, please inform them of the necessity of protecting the integrity of the investigation as well.”

Georgia coach Mark Richt, in an interview Monday night, declined to comment on the NCAA e-mail.

With preseason camp starting next Monday — and with NCAA investigations typically protracted processes — Richt was asked if he is concerned that he might not know the outcome of the probe when practice begins.

“As usual, I’ll worry about things I can control,” Richt replied. ” I can’t really control it, but I’ve got no indication at all that there’s any reason to believe that all of our guys won’t be practicing Day 1. So that’s my expectation right now. If something changes, then we’ll adjust.”

In the e-mail, Wilson asked Baumgartner to have the student-athlete “review and sign” an attached “NCAA Interview Notice” before meeting with investigators. The e-mail, which did not say when the interview would be held, said the athlete “may have personal legal counsel present.”

The “NCAA Interview Notice” cautions that refusing to provide information or providing false or misleading information could violate NCAA ethical-conduct legislation.

I think these athletes must be compensated in some way for their services. At least the NCAA should allow athletes that are NFL draft prospects to receive insurance against injury during their last two years of eligibility. Why should they risk their futures, otherwise? This would likely keep some juniors from making the jump before they are truly ready for the league.

I know this is just going to make people mad … but … oh well. I’m a Falcons fan. I’m a Braves fan. I’m not a UGA fan or a Ga Tech fan. However, I find it embarrassing that some UGA fans post the score of the Georgia Tech/UGA game on every UGA-related article.

Your program finishes with an embarassing record? “30-24″
Your athletes are getting arrested left and right? “30-24″
Your AD can’t keep it in his pants? “30-24″
A player is beign investigated? “30-24″

The reason that teams like Florida and Alabama destroy you is because they wouldn’t be proud of a season in which their biggest accomplishment was that they barely beat an in-state rival like Florida State or Auburn.

UGA should change its mascot to a horse. The equestrian team is the best thing it has going for it.

I still don’t understand how it’s any of the NCAA’s business where students go. Players are given books, tutoring, apparel, etc…and many still don’t even finish a degree. Heck, many other student athletes need part time jobs to get by…is that of the NCAA’s concern?

chipper there isn’t enough money to pay players. If you pay one sport you pay them all.Insurane is fine. The player or his/her family just has to pay the premium. These players could get a VERY VERY valuable Education. If they are to stupid to study something other than African studies, housing develpoement, or criminal justice it is their fault.

ChipperDoodle, thank Title IX for why the athletes will never be paid. Football and men’s basketball are the only revenue producers for a school. All of the other sports are funded by the earnings of those two sports, and all lose big money.

If you pay the football team a wage, you got to pay the women’s softball team, the golf teams, the tennis teams, the lacrosse teams, etc the same wage.

Wouldn’t just an invite to South Beach warrant at least a Q and A from the NCAA with regard to their overall far-reaching investigation? Of course, turning down the invite isn’t a violation and is the correct thing to do, but the NCAA would want to know names and such. So even if they interview one of our guys, it doesn’t mean they did anything wrong.

As for me, I get invited to all these things because the agents know that where PreyDawg is, hot chicks are sure to follow. It is a curse really. I cant just go anywhere and hang out with a bunch of the guys anymore. So since they want hot chicks at their parties to attract the players, they invite THE player….me.

A very astute observation by Nodawginthefight!

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, and now Damon Evans, the UGA Athletic Department is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for your University or your Athletic Department, and that is a fact. It has been said many times: “Tech people are proud of their school, Georgia people are proud of their football team.” What a legacy to be proud of!

UGA fans can now return to your mobile home parks and resume waiting for your unemployment checks.

Haha, I just played that new NCAA Football 11(You can afford things like this too if you get a job) the other day, and it was funny, because with all the talk about how tech is such a superior school in every way to UGA, the fine folks at EA Sports did not agree. Tech is ranked just an A for Academic prestige on the game. UGA is also ranked in A in academic prestige. Oh man, looks like even objective video game makers don’t think as highly of the great tech as its fans do…

Typical UGA doofus. My username isn’t saying that I don’t have a dog in the fight, it’s saying that your “dawg” (i.e. the UGA Pomeranian) doesn’t show up for the fight.

If they’re playing Georgia Southern or Hawaii? Sure.

Throw them out there against Florida or Alabama? They tuck their tails and run.

But again, at least you guys pulled out those narrow victories against Tech and Kentucky last year.

That means your football team is just super.

There is a picture taken of AJ at Summerville’s HS graduation posted on his Facebook page. The picture was from Sunday, Memorial Day Weekend. I mean, it would be really easy to determine the validity of this picture and his statement and can not for the life of me think why AJ would lie about this when it is so easy to research and realize he was not in two places at once.

If you say he was in Miami, where is your proof? I mean, at least come up with something that can be validated or proven to be false. Because if all you are going on is someone claiming he was there, well…. good luck with that ‘evidence”.

I think I will side with the picture that can at least be ruled on, one way or another verse the word of someone’s best friend, whose dad is friends with the cousin of the pet sitter who walks the Agent’s dog.

I don’t even know that I have a favorite team, I just enjoy irritating UGA fans. That’s the honest truth.

I just don’t like people who think they (or their team) are/is awesome when they/it hasn’t really done anything.

I dislike Barack Obama for the same reason.

He doesn’t stick his foot in his mouth like W. Hooray, hooray.

Sorry, but that doesn’t automatically make you an awesome president.

nodawg, we finished 2nd in the country 3 years ago. Yes “we” haven’t won a national championship in 30 years. We’ve won the SEC twice and not gotten the opportunity to play in the BCSC. Contrast that with LSU and Florida who also won in twice in the 2000s and both got to play in and win the National Championship twice. In fact, no SEC team that has made the BCSC has ever lost it. I am not saying we’re great because we ride these other teams coattails, rather we have crappy luck in regard to getting in the Championship game.

Cesspool ?

What UGA is known for is beating the crap out of Georgia tek 8 of the 9 years of the Coach Richt Era.

That’s it.

I don’t want Coach Richt fired, but for him to FIRE Mike Bobo.

Nick 10:33 pm last night, sir :

+ 20 points scoring advantage

How can you have a plus + 20 points scoring average when :

2002 we only scored :

27 pts vs Alabama

26 pts vs FSU

24 pts vs Auburn

18 pts vs vols

13 pts vs crocodiles

13 pts vs South Carolina

6 games in 2002, we averaged 20 points on OFFENSE and Nick wants us to average more than + 20 points ADVANTAGE ?

12-2

July 27th, 2010
4:23 am

What do you expect us to do on Defense Nick ?

Hold the other team to MINUS SCORE ?

Admittedly, we played a soft schedule in 2002, with Auburn # 15 the only other SEC team ranked in the Final Coaches’ Poll 2002.

The SEC was DOWN in 2002, and still Georgia AVERAGED only 20 points in half our football games 2002. And, you want us to average more than + 20 points ADVANTAGE.

We didn’t do that in 2002.

We will not achieve that in 2010, even with this soft easy schedule we enjoy 2010, as well – like we did enjoy the soft easy schedule in 2002 and could not accomplish it.

.

.

Coach Richt’s Offense has AVERAGED the # 52 NCAA Total Offense all 9 years of the Coach Richt Era.

12-2

July 27th, 2010
4:25 am

2007 Georgia scored only :

12 pts vs South Carolina

14 pts vs Tennessee

26 pts vs Alabama

24 pts vs Kentucky

20 pts vs Vandie

13 games 2007 we played and 5 of the 13 we averaged again 19 points.

What do you expect of our Defense to hold the other team to MINUS points again Nick ?

.

.

This makes NO SENSE Nick to talk about the Offense in 2002 and 2007 and say we must be + 20 points again this year as we were in 2007 and 2002.

We averaged only 12 points advantage in 2007. We did not achieve your goal of + 20 points Advantage 2002 or 2007.

12-2

July 27th, 2010
4:26 am

4-Loss Auburn and 4-Loss Florida were the best teams we beat in 2007 and for those also rans as our best wins 2007, we LOST to South Carolina a 6-Loss team that did not even play in a bowl game and we LOST to the vols another 4-Loss team. Who in the hell did we beat in 2007 Nick ? # 19 Hawaii, that’s who we beat. That’s really great.

NOT.

+ plus 12 points advantage in 2007 with Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford.

We did not beat ANY great teams in 2002 or 2007. And, as for the National Stage NICK, we beat # 24 Final Poll FSU a 5-Loss team in our 2002 bowl game and in 2007 for our bowl game on the National Stage (not), we beat # 19 Final Poll Hawaii.

If you want to be relevant, play a Top 10 Final AP Poll team in a bowl game and WIN, something Coach Richt has NOT ACCOMPLISHED YET now in his 10th season.

Instead, Coach Richt is 3-8 vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in his 9 years at the helm, 1 in 2001, 1 in 2005, and 1 in 2006 – that’s it

Nick

Yeah, why does everyone assume this is a draft eligible player? These agents start circling kiddie flag football games and may have been pursuing a kid for years. It could easily be an underclassman, which is really scary for the Dogs.

I have a theory that the Tech trolls on here are just workers at an outsourced call center in Asia. There can’t possibly be enough Tech fans with so much spare time to create all of these posts.

An alternate theory is that it is part of a Tech English 101 assignment.

Poor trolls A.J was here A.J was there..question morons what was the name of the “agent” throwing the party..hmmm?? What Bug got your tongue? Damnable truth is that if there was no agent who threw the party or payed for travel hotels etc, there can be no infraction committed…me thinks naming the agent would come before naming players that may or may not have attended..if they haven’t named who was paying the expenses yet do you really think they have much to go on? Really what agent would pay for and put something like this together and then not have his picture with all his “boys” splashed all over the local media outlets…something does not compute..(that was for all the bugs).

Buzzer: the post about AJ being in Miami so long he speaks Cuban was a funny, I got a chuckle out of that. It is actually Spanish that the Cuban people speak, but still a funny post. Nice work.

I doubt AJ was in Miami, if he was, that was pretty dumb to come out and say definatively that he has NEVER been to that city. He doesn’t strike me as dumb. I could be proven wrong, but my best guess (no inside info whatsover) is that the NCAA is going to interview AJ… that he was invited to the party and to visit Miami in some form or fashion, and that AJ did not go or do anything inproper.

My concern is that the NCAA and thus the media get the truth out VERY SOON. Unfortunately, it he is innococent, ESPN won’t be running a loop every 20 minutes about how AJ and UGA are cleared of any wrongdoing. It will barely be mentioned, unlike the allegations/investigation.

Just my best guess.

I saw A J Green in Miami, there is no doubt it was him. I’m prepared to testify to the NCAA investigation committee under Oath if I’m asked. I will not be apart of this massive coverup. As I said, I saw A J Green in Miami of Ohio, I know it was him in that cab!

Not interested in traveling west to see the Dawgs play a nobody. Colorado was 3-9 last year and are not even going to be that good this year.

I am tired of seeing the Dawgs play these bottom dwellers….Louisiana-Lafayette, Colorado, Idaho State are teed up this year…. who is excited about these games? geeesh….

I did go to the OSU game and that was quite an invironment…. even though we lost it got us some great expozure…. we should have won and need more of that…

Good luck finding takers and Go Dawgs!
