(11:29 a.m. and 12:04 p.m. updates below)
HOOVER, Ala. – Georgia’s delegation arrived here this morning for SEC Media Days and immediately faced questions about Wednesday’s news that the NCAA will send investigators to campus for an “inquiry.”
In interviews before their formal appearances before the media later this morning, Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green said he has “never” been to Miami, where various players’ attendance at an agent’s party reportedly led to NCAA probes at three other schools, and coach Mark Richt said he doesn’t believe the NCAA inquiry will necessarily bring bad news.
“I don’t know if it is [bad news] or not, quite frankly,” Richt said. “By the way you posed the question, you’re saying it’s never good news [when the NCAA investigates]. Then you’re saying it’s bad news. I don’t necessarily think it is bad news.
“I’m sure they’re gathering information, but we’ll see what they gather.”
Richt said he does not believe the NCAA probe will be a distraction to the team, which starts preseason practice on Aug. 2.
Asked if he is worried at this point about having a player or players declared ineligible, Richt said: “I’m not going to make any comment about anything having to do with the investigation.”
Asked if the NCAA is looking into the activities of one player or more than one player, Richt said: “I don’t know at all. And actually I’m asked not to make any comment about it.”
UGA associate athletic director Claude Felton said the NCAA requested that the school’s officials, coaches and players not comment on the matter until the inquiry is completed.
Green, Georgia’s top pro prospect, has said that he was asked by a Georgia official on Tuesday if he attended the agent’s party in Miami and that he said no.
He reiterated this morning that he has “never” been to Miami.
“I’m not even focused on that,” Green said of the tumult about the NCAA probe. “I’m just focused on getting ready for the season.”
Asked if he is worried about what might come of the investigation, Green said simply: “No.”
Asked if it is a hassle, he said: “Not really. Just random stuff, but it’s not a hassle.”
UPDATE 11:25 A.M.:
Before the full media contingent, Richt’s topic turned to his team and the approaching season, of all things.
He seemed decidedly upbeat.
“Everything I’ve seen so far makes me think we’re going to have what it takes from an emotional standpoint, a physical standpoint,” he said.
Despite a turbulent off-season that has included the arrests of seven players, the arrest and resignation of the athletic director and now an NCAA inquiry, Richt said it has been a good offseason from a football standpoint.
“There is an energy we have this offseason we probably haven’t had in a while,” he said.
Richt said the team has high respect for redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray and is rallying around him. Richt said he believes the offense will be improved this season with a good complement of run and pass. He said he hopes Green stays healthy all season and believes he will improve as a blocker.
And to the inevitable question of how he feels about reports putting him on the occupational “hot seat,” Richt said: “I understand the business. I understand how things go. I don’t worry about it.”
UPDATE 12:04 P.M.:
In the big ballroom before the full media contingent here, A.J. Green honored the request by Georgia officials that he not discuss the NCAA inquiry.
Asked if that frustrates him, if there are things he would like to say but can’t, he said: “It’s not my place to comment on it. I don’t feel like I have to.”
On another matter, Green confirmed that he has taken out an insurance policy to protect his future potential NFL earnings against a career-ending injury.
More to come.
Please follow @ajcuga for quick updates from Media Days.

AJ just doesnt seem the type to be involved in something like this. The players who have been mentioned so far all share one thing in common….extreme stupidity ( read the N.C. players twitter message about the event if you dont believe that.) What scares me are former players being involved and UGA having to pay the price.

If AJ was in Miami, going to be tough to back track on that statement. I would say I believe he wasn’t there. Doesn’t mean he hasn’t had “other” contact with agents though. All we can do is just wait and see what they find. If the players are guilty, so be it. Let them suffer the consequences of their action. No one is above the rules.

People are focusing their anger on the wrong person. They need to take their anger off agents and send it at the NCAA for being a joke and pimping players. Players are the ones who really bring in the money for college football. The NCAA tries to push forward the laughable joke that they only care about the student athletes when they extend the season by adding an extra game and allowing them to have conference championship games to make extra money for schools and conferences. The NCAA is the frickin joke. College athletes need to start their own conference for pay and stop the joke of the NCAA in its tracks.

This investigation really doesn’t surprise me. NCAA is always going to keep a closer eye on the successful programs, i.e. there looking at UGA, FL and Bama (not MSU, Ole Miss, Vandy, Duke, git, etc.) I’m surprised LSU hasn’t been added to the list. I’d be really surprised if anything came out of it negatively for any of these schools.

From what I’m hearing this is more about guilt by association. Apparently AJ is friends with some of those who were in attendance and there were some references to the clubs and party in miami that were tweeted and posted on AJ’s facebook by those in attendance and that’s why he’s being questioned about whether he attended or has had any contact with the agent(s) in question. According to AJ he was back home visiting friends and family in Summerville.
I don’t think UGA is the last school that will be visited over “agent-gate”. The top two programs are in question about illicit agent dealings, and now there’s the “where there’s smoke there’s fire” mentality. The NCAA is going to be extremely thorough and any rumor or hint of a player anywhere that may or may not have been involved in this thing is going to have the spotlight on them.
This incident with AJ is much ado about nothing in my opinion, however with the recent DUI/underage drinking arrests, D.Evans, the NCAA will probaby do a little digging while their there. What we need to hope is that there is nothing ELSE that we DON’T know about that rears it’s ugly head.
Rarely is it a good thing when the NCAA starts investigating, but hopefully we’re in good shape. Wouldn’t surprise me if this isn’t coming from another school trying to “tattle” to get the spotlight off of them. It’s funny that this information comes out on the eve of Richt’s media day knowing that this will be the focus today.

You can’t beat UGA in football so you hope that other events will take place to UGA’s team. The only way you win come November is that the entire team is suspended for that game.
So keep on posting your mindless dribble as a tech poster or as half of you do, post as a UF or Bama fan. I get it, you team can’t do squat against UGA so you might as well jump on the bandwagon of another school. Thing is, everyone can tell an imposter!

AJ Green gave his commitment to UGA in high school 1-1/2 years before his signing day and withstood every other school in the nation’s best effort during that time to get him to stray from that commitment, but he stayed true to his word. I’ll take AJ at his word until proven otherwise. If he says he was not there….he was not there.
The NFL needs to step in and hold some of these agents accountable for this kind of thing. These are good, young kids by most standards who get swayed by slimey adults and their money. It’s a shame.

I totally agree. These agents need to be held accountable for stuff like this. We all know that 18-22 year old athletes have just about no brains when it comes to this type of atmosphere. Heck, I remember being recruited by a couple big time colleges a few decades ago in Baseball. It’s tough to say no to a free trip and party. It’s all so “heady” (no pun intended Damon).
Bottom line these agents should lose their license or right to be an agent if they are involved in an illegal act such as this!

John- you are a Jacka**, how does race even come into play here? First of all did it ever occur to YOU to think before you type?
“Once again, whenever a pro or college athlete gets into trouble, they are black 95% of the time. Just amazes me. I guess their brains are just different. Not as smart.”
First question do you have CREDIBLE statistical data to support your 95% claim? There were quite a few white players from Notre Dame that got into trouble this past weekend.
Second- if the majority of football/basketball players are in fact black, wouldn’t it stand to reason that a larger pool of those who get into trouble would then in fact be black? The majority of people who run large corporations are older white men, so should it come as any surprise that “95%” of those who commit corporate fraud are older white men?
Perhaps you should take a look at your own IQ and leave the intelligent conversation to those of us who’s IQ’s are comprised of more than two digits.
Race has absolutely nothing to do with stupidity or intelligence for that matter. Wake up and step into the 21st century or go find a Klan site to troll.

At least it wasn’t Damon’s panties in her lap!
The NCAA is taking a look. If UGA has a clean program, and I believe they do, so what? They may find a player or two that did something wrong but the institution can only do so much. It eventually comes down to individual integrity. AJ has demonstrated it. I believe him. CMR has as well. I believe him.
I am not a lawyer but isn’t it illegal to offer someone money to break a contract? Couldn’t the NCAA and the schools sue the agents who do this? I think USC should sue Bush, May and the agents involved and let a court decide how much they owe. That would stop all of this.

Despite a turbulent off-season that has included the arrests of seven players, the arrest and resignation of the athletic director and now an NCAA inquiry, Richt said it has been a good offseason from a football standpoint.
“There is an energy we have this offseason we probably haven’t had in a while,” he said.
That must mean that the two for one bars have extended happy hour to happy days.

Richt kept Mettenburger on the team until it became apparent that he couldn’t cover up the assault on the female charge. Evans pretended that he had just one too many beers at his press conference until the video and red panties proved him disingenuous. The emails and phone records confirmed Evans an outright liar. Expect the same kind of manipulation on the NCAA issue.

Note to UGAownsTech and the rest of the welfare trailer park trash:
You Dawg fans who keep repeating “30-24″ like a mantra enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

LMAOROTF…Some of you people are just too funny! Like this Jimmytech guy…you’re an IDIOT! No clue what you are even saying! I used to have a neighbor growing up who’s name was Jimmy and he wound up going to Tech(I still have an imprint of he braces on my knuckle)…he was a F-IN PU$$, DORK, DWEEB, and more than anything else…a NERD! But even if he was going to try and talk smack…he’d probably at least know something about what he was talking about! UGA will never again go to Shreveport unless they chance conferences…you F-IN IDIOT!! DAMN IT! Sometimes when I read some of these posts…I FEEL LIKE I’M PLAYING CARDS WITH MY SISTER’S KIDS!!!!
Now, back to the subject at hand! Believe it or not…it’s not the lack of common since these retarded GT fans have. It’s the SEC Media Day, and more specifically the NCAA probe into current player/agent interaction. Which at this time happens to include, UF, UA, UGA, UNC, & USC. Now, all of these may not be necessarily related but they all are deemed to be a primary violation by the NCAA.
Poucey from UF has already come out stating that the claim against him is 100% false, and said that he provided everything that he could to prove that. AJ has made a statement that not only was he not in Mia for Memorial Day, but he’s never been to Mia. Now at this time I have to believe both of them. Now, is it possible that another player from UGA could of been down there…absolutely. We’ll just have to wait and see what comes from this. Oh and from what I heard AJ is in Hoover.
I, along with every other Dawg fan, hope that this does not prohibit any current player from competing this season, but if it comes out that one of our players did mess up then guess what?? We have someone right behind that guy who’s ready to get his chance….and we’ll move on!
The good thing is that this whole thing is coming to light now and not during the season!
There has been a lot of people from all over the grid, Dawgs, Gators, etc., saying this and that about…don’t talk smack, don’t throw stones, etc. The fact is that player issues are not a single teams issue. It’s every teams issue! No school is free of a young man’s decision coming back to haunt both him as an individual and the team as a whole. It’s an unfortunate effect of the size of the game these days. In the south football is king…bottom line. A good number of the best players in the nation come out of the southeast US. I know there are quality players all over the country, but everyone knows that there’s a very large pool of quality D1 players in the southeast.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all teams and players involved in this inquiry that nothing serious comes out of it, and the teams are not effected in any way. But, as someone mentioned earlier….when there’s smoke there’s usually a fire. As UGA fans we need to hope the smoke’s just coming from the surrounding states, and not from the Classic City!
Only a week and a half until the pads will be popping! Let’s not let this crap take any focus away from what needs to be done! There’s way too much work to be done in a short amount of time….the names will come out as this unfolds, and at this point I’m not sweating it too much. It does make my stomach a little uneasy, but it’s much like the feeling I get before game day. A for the majority of those it comes out alright as well! So stay the course Dawgs and Finish The Drill!!!! GO DAWGS!!!!!

I don’t think 9 out of 10 Gator fans take the Georgia game as an easy victory for the Gators (and it most often isn’t for either team)….but we have grown used to winning in the last 20 years or so….but not spoiled. Georgia will be a very good team this year….but they will have to play at their very best to beat an excellent Gator team. I truly believe this year’s Gator team will be a lot better than last year’s Gator team….in overall balance and…better….effort and motivation. I honestly believe the Dawgs best chance to beat the Gators is if Florida beats Bama early. They could have a let down against the Dawgs. If Bama beats the Gators, the Gators will be on a mission to beat everyone and return to Atlanta to play Bama again. Just my opinion…not the facts.

I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I totally agree with Nick Saban on the agent issue.
First, yes the players should absolutely take responsiblity for their actions, but let’s put it into perspective. Many of the athletes in question come from poor backgrounds, with a high percentage of those in single parent homes where the mother is the sole bread-winner. As a player you see thousands of people buying/wearing a jeresy with your number on it at $100+ a peice, you play in front of 90K people each of whom represents $30 for the ticket (face value), and when you go home to visit your mother she is tired, stressed, and worried. She’s working two jobs to keep a roof over her and your sibling’s heads.
”
Then some agent’s runner comes to you and says, “hey kid I know things are tough for you. Here’s some cash to help your family out. Just remember where it came from when it’s time to sign with an agent.
Now two more years pass and the player is a much higher pro prospect than when he took the cash. He doesn’t like the deal the agent lays out and decides to go with another agent who’s offering a better deal. The first agent gets p*ssed and has someone turn him in for taking cash.
So what does the NCAA do? They investigate find that the allegations are true. Then they decide whether the school should have known about it, most cases they feel they should have. Now the player is long gone so you can’t suspend him or kick him off the team. There is no way for the NCAA to punish the agent, but a major violation took place and SOMEONE has to pay the price. So depending on the seriousness it could be anything up to and including loss of scholarships, forfeiting games already played (joke), and/or no post season play. But in this case let’s look at who really is at fault and who really gets punished.
The player is at fault for taking the money, but in many cases how many of us wouldn’t to help our mom? If you say no I would have enough integrity not to, I question your HONEST ability to put yourself in the position of helping your mother. Remember taking the cash is breaking a rule not a law.
The Agent/ Agent-runner, they are at fault for not playing by the rules but again it’s a competitive business and there’s really no penalty for them other than being called a “pimp or preadator” by Saban. They are just doing what they’ve always done and could care less about any collateral damage along the way.
So gets punished by the sanctions?
The current players- many of whom weren’t even on the team before said player committed the violation- just look at USC, none of those kids suffering from R.Bush’s deciscions even played with him. But they have to suffer by either staying on a team that isn’t even allowed to go to a bowl game – let alone win a championship of any sort OR transfer to another school and basically start over with one – two years less eligibility.
The alumni/fans – now have to suffer through the embarrassment not to mention watching an inferior product on the field AFTER they’ve dropped thousands for the right to buy tickets in hopes of watching a team with a chance of winning something.
So why should the agents or players do anything different? There’s no real teeth in the existing rules or laws.
What do you think Reggie Bush cares more about right now? – his now tarnished legacy at USC OR the millions of dollars he’s making as a pro in New Orleans?
Until there are consequences for those agents as Saban suggests this will continue. It should be like in drug enforcement where the dealers(agents) pay a heavier price than the users(players), but the innocent law abiding neighbors (alumni/fans) are protected from the bad element.

So, I’m a GT guy. I posted the following words on a GT blog
“NBA? We can’t control them (or the NFL). But what’s their rush to get their hands on college players? They’ve got the athletes already turned pro. If all teams had to wait for graduation (or 4 years after high school), it would probably increase the quality of the pro game.
Unfortunately, an AD or a Coach cannot know what some kid is doing 24/7. If a school totally leaves character out of the equation when they recruit jocks, the likelihood of having a disaster is higher (see Bush, Reggie). We’ve been fortunate at GT with the quality of kids we have recruited. But you never know…………”
I’m sure its a small number of Rednecks who never set foot on the Athens campus…..but what is up with those guys who are so obsessed with saying that GT is irrelevant? Self-contradiction……

I know it is asking a lot, considering this is the internet, but couldn’t there be at least some civility in our posts? Specifically, I am referring to some of the first messages on this topic, calling AJ Green a liar. There have been numerous cases of high school recruits being called thugs. This is an across-the-board thing with posters from every school being guilty of smearing young men who do not deserve it. It is not like we are talking about a bunch of politicians, who are older adults, and who have a track record of stretching the truth.

Tech fans,
You do realize how sad you all look by coming into these UGA blogs and gloating. If you could actually beat UGA more than once a decade it would be different but it so obvious that you all are completely frustrated that you have to latch on to any sort of negativity about Georgia as your only means of feeling better about yourself. It’s just sad and you all should be ashamed. When somebody wrecks their car to you point and laugh? When an old lady trips and falls to you snicker and point and laugh because you didn;t fall? Why most your only form of happiness come from other people’s misery? Doesn;t that seem a bit wrong? You al lare supposed to be smart people. Didn;t your Moms raise you better than this? Tech’s got a fine football team, going i nthe right direction. You should spend some of this wasted energy on supporting them instead of on bashing another team.

If the NCAA does not find any wrong doings at UGA, I want to know from what source did the NCAA think they had such good reliable information that they felt they had to investigate UGA , FLA. ALA. SC. This sounds like a witch hunt and if there is no validity to any of this crap then the SEC needs to file a formal protest against the NCAA or at least the reliable sources that got all this mess started. If I was the SEC I would be filing law suits against someone or some institution . So NCAA I want to know your sources ?

Katy,
You go on a long dissertation about what a terrible school UGA and do not understand why we are so intent on our football team. You ramble about Tech being this higher learning institution and we at GT don’t party. First I would ask the ? if it’s not a big deal football and UGA then why are you on this blog that is a UGA article? I would also point out a couple of other things to you. The AJC once did an article on student athletes. I have friends that are big Tech fans and are always trying to say that the Tech athlete could not compete as easily because they require a higher IQ individual. Well the article showed the falasy as both the UGA and Tech players had about the same SAT scores and both were well sub par of the overall student body. These two schools are no different then any other ACC or SEC teams as it is difficult to get in top flight schools on an academic bases but if you can play some ball then you get in. If you want to gloat about a school look to the IVY League that my understanding is football players do not get a free ride but have to pay like every other student. This appears to me more of a truely student athlete. As far as UGA being a party school my brother went to GT. Made the deans list first semester and ended up flunking out cause he liked to party too much at Tech. If you want to cast stones in here about jobs after graduation consider that 92K mainly grads fill Sanford every Saturday I guess from unemployment checks as you state a degree from UGA is only good for receiving. While UGA is not known in the same light as GT as an engineering school we are obviously better at math and can count cause GT built a stadium that you can only fill 1/3 of the way on Saturdays.

I am going to throw my 2 cents in about this subject….first off I believe AJ to be a high caliber person. I think he has his head screwed on right. However about the agents in pimping out players, I think players have now gotten to the point where they dont see any of the money these high profile coaches and AD’s making. As much lavishousness that is displayed they want their fair share of what they aren’t getting to play and it is now making its way to the top of the chain. If you dont think this is happening you are naive and dumb, but it is. College Football is the minors of NFL.

Green says he has evidence to prove he was not in Miami, and for his sake I hope he’s right, but for his name (and the other players) to come out in this mess without proof of guilt is simply wrong.
(My own guess is that with all the twittering that goes on and all the cell phone cams out there, if he WAS there, we’ll all know soon enough).

I for one am rooting for you Katy, Godspeed.
Also I get it now, “thUGA” cause our school’s name is UGA and if you put it with “th” it spells a version of a word that could be substituted for a word that implies criminals are only enrolled at the school…classic.
