UGA No. 22 in preseason composite poll; new media guides hot off the press

HOOVER, Ala. — Starting the barrage of notes from SEC media days:

  • Among the first installments in the mountain of paperwork that will be distributed here during the next three days: a national composite Top 25 based on seven preseason magazines.

Georgia, I thought you’d want to know, is tied for 22nd.

The Bulldogs’ highest ranking among the seven publications came from Athlon (No. 15) and their lowest from Sporting News and Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook (uranked in both).

Alabama is No. 1 in the composite poll, with Ohio State, Boise State, Florida and Oklahoma completing the top five in that order. Other SEC teams: Arkansas No. 18, LSU No. 20, Auburn No. 21. Georgia is tied with Penn State for No. 22.

Georgia Tech? No. 19.

  • Georgia is distributing a new batch of media guides hot off the press — the reprinted version with references to the former athletic director removed.

Damon Evans‘ bio has been replaced with one of Frank Crumley, the interim AD.

Some 14,000 guides were reprinted at a cost of approximately $50,000.

  • Please check back throughout the afternoon for much more from media days. And please follow @ajcuga on Twitter for updates.

You seem to have an obsession with the word obsessed. Perhaps you should read a little more and expand your vocabulary. Try this for size: THWG! Repeat after me: To Hell With Georgia! And bite me dog.

Preseason composite poll: UGA, GT rankings … is the link that brought us to this page. I can’t help it if the AJC writers do a bait and switch.

“Preseason composite poll: UGA, GT rankings” notice how it has UGA then GT. Always second fiddle!

Boise State returns 20 of 22 starters from last year. They are #1 in percentage of lettermen returning at 91.70%.

Arkansas is #2 in lettermen returning at 83.1%. South Carolina is #3 at 83.10% (must be a 3rd decimal point).

“Yeah I’m sure if Tech was competitive the wouldn’t have “chose” to leave. ”

The reason back then is one that is very familiar to SEC programs today. The University of Alabama oversigning recruits.

Laughing at many of the blogs! Sure UGA had a good run several years ago when UF, Bama, UT, and even LSU & Auburn were down but what have they done since 2006? Well let’s see…only team ever to be ranked and lose to Vandy! Get ripped at home to Bama! Can’t beat UF while showing sportsmanship! Lose to both UT and UK when both are below average teams! UGA is only relevant within Georgia, which is a shame considering all the talent they land yearly. Have they ever won a national title? I am almost 30 years old and a football fanatic! They certainly have done nothing in my lifetime other than beat Hawaii! Oh what a resume! LOL

Delbert D…You need to recheck your info! Tech left because the SEC was going to impose scholly reductions. Back then Tech was a powerhouse team and recruited huge numbers. Dodd was mad at Bryant and used this topic as a powerplay move. He lost! Only UGA sided with Tech and in a panty twist Tech left SEC.

SECRules – Recheck your facts. Alabama’s and Mississippi’s votes swung the decision. Dodd withdrew Georgia Tech from the SEC immediately after the votes were counted. Bryant had agreed to support Dodd’s position, but he was a no-show. His substitute voted against Dodd’s position. Georgia did support Dodd and Georgia Tech. It was big news back then; were you around? I was.

The issue was scholarship limitations. Alabama and Mississippi were the most prominent schools oversigning scholarship players and then cutting down to the limit during summer practice. Dodd strongly disagreed with this practice.

As support for my statements, consider this:

“Again, as we have stated many, many time here, oversigning is not a violation of the NCAA rules, it is an ethical issue and those that exploit the loophole are not conducting themselves within the spirit and ethics of the recruiting by-laws. This is a perfect example as to why you cannot write by-laws and proposals with the assumption that everyone is going to act accordingly, because they are not. And with regards to oversigning, we’re not talking about one or two coaches exploiting the spirit and ethics of the by-laws for signing players, we are talking about the entire history of an entire conference, minus Vanderbilt and Georgia. Oversigning has been a systemic problem in the SEC since the creation of the conference, just ask Georgia Tech fans about oversigning.”

The quoted paragraph is from oversigning.com.

What are your facts to support your statements?

HOUDAWG. PLEASE shut up, you are embarassing any intelligent UGA fans here!!!
You are aware that that IOWA team is picked to win this years National Championship by several of the major polls aren’t you? And you are aware of our coaches dismal losing record against ranked teams aren’t you?? It’s easy to have a “winning” season when you play the biggest cream-puff schedule in the NCAA!!! Nationally, we will never be taken seriously if we keep playing these kinds of schedules. Where are the good out-of-conference games? Richt schedules us against Sister Mary’s school for wayward girls and calls it a tough game! Dooley would have never put up with this crap. Under (want-to-be) Saint Mark we are a mere shadow of what we once were. I travel all over the nation as part of my business and I can tell you, there is VERY little respect for our current program or coaching staff at the National level at the moment. Concensus is that we are living on past glory and it may be a while ’til our star rises again. As long as “Bama and Florida are strong, and we play wimpy schedules (sorry folks, the SEC doesn’ t impress anyone anymore with the exception of UA and UF — the rest of the conference is mediocre at best).
And while I detest the Yellow Jackets, I must admit they are impressing people and getting some attention on the national level. And as much as I hate to say it, they have become a very formidable opponent since CPJ arrived. IF they ever develop a defense they will be tough to handle because, while a few of us HAVE beaten them since the coaching change, no one has been able to “shut down” that offense or blow them out, even with the pathetic defense they’ve had the last few years. We will still stomp the Jackets this season, but I am not too confident about how we will fare for the next several years afterward. Stars rise and they fall. Ours is currently on the decline, with no end to the skid in sight under our current coaching staff. On the bright side though, there are a LOT of VERY good coaches who would LOVE to fill that position, and who would restore us to our rightful place in the NCAAF world. Now if someone could just lure Saban away to an NFL HC job……………….

Just like I said before UGA will be an uderdog in 4 games,Florida, Arkansas, Tech, and
Auburn. South Carolina will be a pick it, or a slight favorite. Then we have the typical
mid-season disaster—-who will it be this year? KY, Vandy, Tenn? Even Miss. State
away with those “cow Bells” could be a trap—they gave the Gators all they wanted last year.
