UGA No. 22 in preseason composite poll; new media guides hot off the press

HOOVER, Ala. — Starting the barrage of notes from SEC media days:

  • Among the first installments in the mountain of paperwork that will be distributed here during the next three days: a national composite Top 25 based on seven preseason magazines.

Georgia, I thought you’d want to know, is tied for 22nd.

The Bulldogs’ highest ranking among the seven publications came from Athlon (No. 15) and their lowest from Sporting News and Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook (uranked in both).

Alabama is No. 1 in the composite poll, with Ohio State, Boise State, Florida and Oklahoma completing the top five in that order. Other SEC teams: Arkansas No. 18, LSU No. 20, Auburn No. 21. Georgia is tied with Penn State for No. 22.

Georgia Tech? No. 19.

  • Georgia is distributing a new batch of media guides hot off the press — the reprinted version with references to the former athletic director removed.

Damon Evans‘ bio has been replaced with one of Frank Crumley, the interim AD.

Some 14,000 guides were reprinted at a cost of approximately $50,000.

  • Please check back throughout the afternoon for much more from media days. And please follow @ajcuga on Twitter for updates.

Enjoy your premature and short-lived ranking while you can Dawg Fans. All that matters in the SEC is Dec. 4th in Atlanta. Gators steal away the championship from Bama and go on to win their Third NC in Five Years!

How does UF, with an unproven QB and losing most of their defense, rank so high? I honestly wouldn’t trade our situation with their’s.

UGA will end the season ranked higher than Tech. I will be willing to wager anyone.

Frank,

That would be a really stupid bet with the experience Tech has returning on offense and defense. GT will have one of the best DB’s of any team with Tarrant, Reese, Reid, and Taylor.

I think I’d put Tech a little higher than 19. I think in the 20s is about right for Georgia.

I think at the end of the year Georgia will be higher and Tech will be lower, but it’s such a crapshoot in July.

Number 22 – Composite ….HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
10-10 SEC East record last 4 years …..HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Tennessee is 14-6 last 4 years – Florida is 19-1 ….HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Richt needs to get this thing turned around – Donnan’s last 4 year SEC East record was 12-6 …HMMMMMMMM

Richt made good moves to change up his staff – let’s hope this translate to some success. Another couple of 4 and 5 loss seasons = HC coaching change.

My prediction is that he will get it done ….. and wish him the best of luck!!!

I like it! The Dawgs always turn heads with a preseason mid to low ranking. Good. Without the pressure of being Top 10, I think the Dawgs will have a good season and continue to elude the gnats.

IF this doesn’t show the bias of the AJC sports journalists (Schultz and Tucker are the worst with Roberson third). Tech comes in ahead of UGA but read the headline!!! Many simply read the headlines and thus Tech getting higher recognition will never be noticed by many. Now I know why so many of us quit buying the paper…even the Sunday paper sold currently on many street corners. Just sick of the bias.

As we proved recently, it doesn’t matter where you start, just where you finish. For you Bama and Vol fans, that means it’s kinda like a NASCAR race.

22/64/1/15… it doesn’t matter. What matters is winning football games. We will be 1-0 when we face SC. I don’t expect Grantham to show much defensively before the SC game. UL Lafayette will give our D just enough test to allow us to unload on SC. We should go into the Arkansas game 2-0. Offensively, Murray will be in the groove and the backs will be rolling. It’s not where the Dawgs start in the polls, it’s where they finish. I expect us to be in the Top 15 by season’s end.

Hmm the UGA blog doesn’t talk about GT being above the bulldogs in a preseason poll, curious. Must be a bias in the AJC or perhaps a conspiracy at the state level.

The rankings matter late in the season. Usually, around mid November or December, we will all have a real good handle on the so called Top 20 or 25. Today or in early October? They still do not matter.

Honestly, none beyond top 10 status is worth anything, anyway. Take Tech last year, i mean they won their lil boy conference and they ended up what? 13th or 14th or was it 17th. See?

Top 10 status is what matters. Today’s Top 10 matters as much as how many electoral votes that Obama got in the last election. What matters is what happens in his NEXT November election. See?

What matters is where your team goes on NY’s day. Did they win or lose? Then and only then do the rnakings matter. If your club is Top 10 then they are good. Top 18 or top 23 or top 123 matters not.

Pass the mustard and pickles.

GTax,

I agree with Frank. UGA will finish ahead of GT. UGA, despite re-fueling on defense, has arguably the best offensive line in the country, best kicking game in the country and the best WR in the country. Our RBs ran for more yards in the last 3 games than any other team in the SEC. Plus, in head to head, UGA owns GT.

Also, this Arkansas at 18 business is a joke. A returning stud QB for sure + some good folks to throw to, but there is little reason to think the defense has improved much–which was abysmal last year, finishing dead last in the SEC.

Funny how the pre season rankings mean nothing to Dawg fans when their team isn’t any good. But if they are ranked, say #1 in pre season, they are celebrating the national championship in July.

The good thing about this is” If UGA or any SEC team can get into the NCS, and Ohio State can somehow win their annual patsy schedule, then it’s looking good. It’s the same every year. No matter how bad Ohio State gets beat in the big game, they put them right back up there the next year. Oklahoma = same thing. And if USC wasn’t on quadruple maxi-probation, they would be right up there also. And I’m sure if Notre Dame can win at least half of their games, they’ll be right back up there next year.

The best part of the preseason rankings is UGA fans cannot even deal with anyone including GT to be ranked above them. We love reading all the rants and complaining. The fact remains and GA fans never will understand it, preseason rankings mean NOTHING! I could care less what my team is ranked before the season starts. But the egos in Athens love it and now have to write their rants. Enjoy, puppy dawgs!
