NCAA will make ‘inquiry’ at Georgia (UPDATED)

(Last updated 1:05 a.m. Thursday)

HOOVER, Ala. –- The NCAA, in the midst of a crackdown on improper dealings between college football players and agents, informed the University of Georgia late Wednesday afternoon that it will send investigators to campus to conduct an “inquiry.”

The probe is believed to be the latest in a recent string of NCAA investigations looking into possible improper benefits received by college football players from agents.

Investigations are known to be underway at North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama.

Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton confirmed Wednesday’s call from the NCAA and said UGA Athletic Association officials responded by pledging full cooperation.

Felton said the NCAA requested that UGA officials, coaches and student-athletes refrain from further comment on the matter “until the inquiry is completed.” Georgia interim athletic director Frank Crumley declined to comment when reached by the AJC.

The NCAA’s call to Georgia officials in Athens came as the SEC was wrapping up the first session of its annual media days event in Hoover, Ala., where the hot topic was the widespread recent allegations of improper agent activity.

“It’s epidemic right now,” Florida coach Urban Meyer said. “I think it’s always been there, from what I understand. . . . But I think we’ve reached a point where the size of college football, the magnitude of college football right now, [it] is really overwhelming.”

The NCAA is investigating whether Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus broke NCAA rules by attending a sports agent’s party on Miami’s South Beach during Memorial Day weekend, and NCAA investigators also have interviewed North Carolina players, including defensive tackle Marvin Austin, and South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders about the same party.

In addition, the NCAA is looking into an allegation that former Florida offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey accepted $100,000 from an agent’s representative between last season’s SEC Championship Game and the Sugar Bowl –- an allegation that Pouncey has strongly denied and called “absolutely ridiculous.”

Georgia’s highest-profile pro prospect, junior wide receiver A.J. Green, told SI.com on Tuesday, the day before the NCAA’s call to UGA, that he was not at the South Beach party that triggered investigations at three schools. Green said he spent Memorial Day weekend at home in Summerville, S.C., and that he was asked about the party by a Georgia compliance official on Tuesday.

“I never went to South Beach,” Green said.

Former Georgia wide receiver Michael Moore, Green’s teammate the past two seasons, said Wednesday night on Twitter: “Hahaha. This talk about A.J. is hilarious. That country boy ain’t never been to Miami!!! You can put those rumors to rest.”

It is not clear whether the NCAA informed Georgia which player or players it plans to interview.

NCAA rules prohibit college players from signing contracts with, or accepting benefits from, agents. If a player is found to have done so, he could face loss of college eligibility. If the NCAA finds that the school knew, or should have known, about the matter, the institution also could be penalized.

“At the conclusion of the process, when the facts are known, appropriate determinations will be made as to the amateurism status of the student-athlete and whether the institution was aware or should have been aware of the improper conduct based on existing NCAA rules,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Wednesday, speaking in generalities and not about any specific case.

Slive added: “Given the surreptitious nature of these matters, it is difficult, if not impossible, for institutions to know what might have taken place. . . . My point is, this isn’t done on Main Street at noon with a compliance officer sitting there. Our schools work very hard. We’ve talked about this issue over and over. We’ve brought experts in. Our schools do everything they can to educate student-athletes about what they should and shouldn’t do.”

Georgia coach Mark Richt and three players -– Green, punter Drew Butler and fullback Shaun Chapas -– are scheduled to arrive at media days Thursday morning for appearances before almost 1,000 media members here.

The NCAA’s recent focus on agent activity,  dubbed AgentGate by some, was much-discussed during the opening session of the SEC’s annual three-day media event Wednesday.

Alabama coach Nick Saban was most outspoken on the topic, exuding anger from the podium at the Wynfrey Hotel.

Although not excluding players from responsibility, Saban said agents are “entrapping and taking advantage of young people at a difficult time in their life” and should be banned from the agent business for a year if they endanger college players’ eligibility with improper inducements.

“I don’t think it’s anything but greed that is creating it right now on behalf of the agents,” Saban said. “Agents that do this, I hate to say this, but how are they any better than a pimp? I have no respect for people who do that to young people -– none. I mean, none. How would you feel if they did it to your child?”

Slive  called for a national re-examination of the agent issue, saying: “This is a national problem that calls for a national agent strategy for college athletics.” He said an NCAA committee should take an outside-the-box look at the issue.

“Dealing with improper agent conduct has been a challenge for a long time,” Slive said. “Not only for intercollegiate athletics, but also for the many good agents who try to follow the rules. It is time to reexamine the NCAA rules that relate to agents.”

After the story broke late Wednesday of the NCAA’s inquiry at Georgia, former Bulldogs linebacker Rennie Curran, who gave up his final season of college eligibility to enter this year’s NFL draft, addressed the matter on his Twitter account.

“Can’t believe how hard the ncaa is trying to crack down on college athletes,” Curran tweeted. “How can [you] expect someone not to look to outside sources…”

Continuing on his next tweet, Curran wrote: “… when there are video games being made of you, your jerseys getting sold, your family is struggling [and] you don’t even get a dime except pell [grant].”

If this happened to Georgia, Dareus would be suspended for 4 games by the NCAA. The bias is blatant it’s comical. But because it’s media darling “Alabama Crimson Tide”, the NCAA will look the other way.

Saban’s attacking agents, instead of the spotlight resting on Dareus, who should be suspended, regardless of Saban’s attempts to deflect attention.

How bout Saban suspending Dareus for a year, like he’s suggesting for the agents? Is he really as tough as he talks, or that a bunch of hot air?

Let me get this straight, is Saban saying Dareus is the “victim” here? You’ve got to be kidding? If Dareus went to the Miami party, all expenses paid by the agent, then Dareus didn’t know that going to a all expense paid party in Miami was against the rules?

come on, Dareus isn’t a helpless victim.

If coaches got tougher on players, this sort of thing would stop happening.

Saban’s light way of dealing with his player here, is more of the problem, than the agents.

Coach’s and players should be suspended for a year when this happens, that would stop this kind of thing from happening.

If there is anything here at all, you can bet that Tennessee people are the ones that sicked the NCAA on GA. Whatever happened to the investigation, last year, with Tennessee, not Darick, last year? They always turn yellow and turn the NCAA on to Georgia, Alabama or someone else, no matter whether it is true or not, and then they get off. This has been going on since the 70’s.
And people wonder why I cannot stand Tennessee? They defame the name Volunteers, of which they are named after Davey Crockett and his Volunteers, who went to the Alama and died, so that others may live in peace.

From numerous reports, true or untrue, there was up to 45 players at this party, many of these players were led there by other players aka..recruited. Many players showed up and left immediatley upon finding out it was an Agent behind the party.

There will be numerous schools, hit with this….LSU, FL. ALA. SC, NC, and the list is just starting as each player interviewed is giving up other players in attendance.

At SEC Media days, Saban stated that the players on campus have been instructed and taught not to accept anything, go anywhere, contact, communicate or do anything to implicate they are doing things illlegally. That Marcel is not just a victim, he knew better, and has to pay the price if he did anything wrong, so some moron stating that coaches being suspended is just that..a suspended idiot….

At UGA we have players and AD’s drinking like sailors on leave….and committing minor crimes…we need to get into a better state of mind to get our on ship righted….to my fellow UGA alumni, fans, supporters….do not throw rocks,,,this investigation is just got going and I am afraid it will turn on us and many other schools to be named later….

[...] The University of Georgia confirmed today that it had received a call from the NCAA “requesting permission to send investigators onto campus to conduct an inquiry”.  Associate Athletic Director Claude Felton confirmed the call to the AJC but didn’t comment saying that the NCAA had asked that no UGA Officials, Coaches, or Student Athletes comment on the matter until the inquiry was made. According to TMZ:

A source closely connected to Georgia’s athletic department tells TMZ the wide receiver allegedly attended a party at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach on Memorial Day weekend. Partying alone isn’t a crime under NCAA rules — Green is 21 years old — but if someone (like an agent or financial advisor) paid for anything related to Green’s trip … that could be a violation.

Looks like everyone is getting caught up a little in this. Word out of Bama is that Dareus showed up and like some of the other players realized an agent was behind it and left. I’m hearing the same thing as SEC fact checker that there were up to 45 different players from a lot of different schools.

Nobody is really going to get hit though. What are they gonna do? Put all 40 schools on probation that had a player show up at a party? They’ll come down on the agent pretty hard and some players will get suspensions and lose eligibility. Marvin Austin at UNC his case is a little more serious since it appears he may have accepted gifts and that he may have been recruiting other players to come. Looks like he might be gone at UNC.

I’d encourage my fellow Tech fans to proceed with caution when making fun of this situation at UGA for a couple of reasons.
- First, and most importantly, they could be completely false. It’s just an inquiry
- Second, there will be plenty of time to make fun if they are proven true. Patience is a virtue. We can have fun with Damon Evans, and that should be enough for now.
- Third, we just had four guys taken in the draft. Who knows if Bay Bay or someone had illegal contact. Show some restraint here and may be when we’re under the microscope one day, the UGA fans will do the same.

A source said one potential interview subject is junior receiver A.J. Green, but if enforcement officials plan to ask Green about the now-infamous party in Miami Beach, Fla., on Memorial Day weekend that prompted the inquiries at North Carolina and South Carolina and an internal investigation at Alabama, they won’t learn much.
Reached by phone Tuesday night — almost a day before the NCAA contacted Georgia — Green told SI.com that he did not attend the party. Green, who is considered on of the nation’s best receivers, said a Georgia compliance official asked him Tuesday if he attended the party. Green said he spent Memorial Day weekend at home in Summerville, S.C.
“I never went to South Beach,” Green told SI.com.

This should be easy to verify….

Hold athletes to the same admission standards as regular students. Too many coaches are like Calimari at UK: come here for a year and get a big pro contract. College presidents could put a stop to this, but most of them are opportunistic politicians, like our dear Mike Adams. If universities tightened their standards, we would have fewer criminal/athletes, and play on the field would not suffer. High school kids are treated like Lebron James at his coming out party.

Maybe it should become illegal for an agent to do this. This blog just tells me that there are too many people out there dealing offers they shouldn’t be doing. Well Rennie, the fact of the matter is the rules are the rules and you have to follow the rules whether you like it or not. The university took you out of your poverty and helped make you a success. If you damage the university because you just can’t wait to get your money then shame on you. The way to stop this is for states to make it a crime for agents to tamper with players until they declare for the draft, and the NFL should ban them as recognized agents that the teams will deal with. That would stop it.

If these agents are knowingly breaking rules by luring student-athletes to parties just to make offers that can get sanctions put on schools then these agents need to get their a$$es sued by these schools. A bowl ban takes away millions of dollars in revenue. When players transfer and recruiting stinks for five years then a bowl game would seem impossible even after sanctions are lifted. I cannot stand USC or Lane Kiffen but they will pay dearly ($$$) for Reggie and the shady agent’s greed. The current players are the individuals to consider. They are being punished for a mistake made five years ago by someone else. Lawsuits on agencies will eliminate this problem once and for all.

I think it’s funny how much time, effort & money the NCAA spends on trying to investigate 18-22 yr old guys to see which parties they go to. I could understand if they are driving a Bentley, but come on!! Who really gives a crap about where these guys go & who they spend time with??!!! Personally, I think the players should be able to earn $30-40K a yr, this way they wouldn’t be so tempted to listen to an agent. It’s gotta be hard to sit & watch your wife & kid stuggle to find money to eat on when you don’t have time to work because of football & school.

CMR addresses issues quickly and appropriately. Our 2nd string (almost 1st) QB and an outstanding young DE/OLB are kickin’ cans right now cuz they messed up, while in our program.

I’m lookin’ forward to watching Nesbitt play this year, cuz he is a stud and runs the option very well. I am a DAWG and I’d rather play against your best. It’s not hard to feel this way. AJ Green can’t hold Calvin Johnson’s jockstrap. Now he is going to get suspended for partying with some agents – not the brightest bulb in the pack. He will be lucky to be a 2nd round draft choice. Maybe the Lions will take him and he can learn from a real pro. As soon as Dooley’s kid gets Tennessee turned around, Georgia will be an afterthought in the SEC – sort of like Kentucky or South Carolina, which will start beating the leg humpers regularly soon and Tech will own them for as long as CPJ is around. CMR should get out of Athens as soon as he can – this program is on the decline big time.

Rennie needs to STFU. Don’t recall the NCAA rule saying he had to have a child that young. Maybe it is the NCAA’s fault he could not afford a condom. I used to be a big fan of his, but now he seems like a whiner. He could have just gone to the real word and started a career after high school to support his family. True he did not get paid while at school (at least I hope), but because of the NCAA, he will make more at the end of three years (without a degree) than most with a degree after four or five years.

Just another with an attitude of “it is not my fault”. He had got the girl pregnant but it is the NCAA’s fault that he cannot support him/her.

Many of the players were already in Miami for the Playboy All American Team Photo shoot. That’s how Marcel Dareus and probably most of the other players got there in the first place. I’ve also heard that many of them left when they realized the party was hosted by an agent. As far as Marvin Austin and Wesley Saunders, rumors are circulating that they are in much deeper trouble because they’ve been acting as runners for this agent, convincing other players to go to the party, accepting gifts, etc. This isn’t something that we should all be “hahaing” at our rivals about, this goes way beyond rivalries on the football field. 40+ players were involved in this deal, chances are a player at your school is going to be involved.

Got this from a Green Bay Packers web site…

The oval “G” logo was created in 1961 by Packers equipment manager George “Dad” Braisher. To most people’s minds, the “G” stands for “Green Bay”. However, when the logo was designed and adopted, it was determined the “G” would stand for “Greatness”. The team actually used a number of different logos prior to 1961, but the “G” is the only logo that has ever appeared on the helmet. Adopted in 1964, the Georgia “G”, though different in design and color, was similar to the Packers’ “G”. However, since its inception in 1961, the Packers’ “G” has been redesigned several times and now actually looks like Georgia’s original 1964 “G.”

Schools who have 40+ arrests in the last 3 yrs and an AD getting a DUI w/a hooker in tow is much worse than a few players “in contact” with NFL agents……discipline should come down on criminal activity purely from the actions of players rather than those involving agents acting in shady ways to entice players, though those players should know better!

You are right. This is a football blog. However, what seems to have been lost is the fact that first and foremost, these are STUDENT ATHELETES. They recieve an education while playing a game for pure competition, not monotary advancement.

That being said, IF the powers that be at the college levels are interested in discussing monotary advancement by said atehletes, we have an argument. Until that time, the athelete does not have a leg to stand on!!!”

(Shakes hand through screen.)

Personally, I believe athletes who participate in a sport that profits the university should be paid university employees.

How in the world do we seriously expect to police a young man that comes from dirt, who is offered more money at one time than he has ever seen in his life?

There are kids in high school that buy clothes and gifts for their friends on their team on a regular basis. No one cares cuz it’s high school. They do it cuz they care about the kid, cuz he’s their friend.

Jimmie wears Hilfiger and Lacoste, while his friend wears the same clothes every day. Do that in college and it’s a violation.

These rules are not realistic. IT IS EXPLOITATION!

LeBron was a cajillionairre while he was still in High School……..from Nike. Not the Cavs.

Every one of those kids on UGA, Tech, Bama, and Fla has a draft grade and a price tag hangin’ outta his butt.

No tellin’ how many of these kids are being paid, but not saying anything. It only gets exposed due to 2 things:
1) The kids career didn’t pan out and he’s lookin’ to score some quick cash for a story, or

2) The kid takes cash from agent A, but actually signs with agent B and stiffs agent A (ala Reggie Bush)

The current structure is basically a set-up for kids to fail…….

Agents who violate the NCAA rules and jepordize the eligibility of a player and put an entire program at risk should be taken out to the practice field and strapped to a tackling dummy–then let the interior linemen have a long practice session. Rennie makes a good point about games featuring you, schools selling jerseys with your name, etc. Royalties should be paid into at least a trust fund that they can access once they reach a certain age, or some monthly stipend while in school.

Their talents are being exploited significantly. Just look at the ticket prices and the donations required, the budgets of the atheletic departments, not to mention without these kids, we would not have so much to look forward to each fall. Nor all of the fun talking about about recruiting.

Obviously Curran is admitting his own guilt. UGA should be investigated, then vacate all their wins for games that Curran played in.

Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while the clueless Mark Richt has absolutely no control over his players. And then there is the infamous “red panties” incident that will haunt UGA for decades.

I don’t understand the negative commentary on here when there is absolutely no proof of wrong doing YET. There are rumors and hearsay but that’s it. How immature and classless is it to sit here behind a computer screen where no one can see you and be so rude and disrespectful to eachother. As a Dawg fan, I’m embarrassed for UGA and Tech (or Ugay and North Avenue Taliban for those of you so uneducated and classless you don’t know their names). Grow up people.

As far as the situation goes, the coaches don’t have monitoring devices on these guys. All they can do is lead by example (and no, Damon’s example wasn’t the shining decision making one hopes for. At the same time, can EVERYONE of you say you’ve never made a horrendous decision? Nope), drill proper behavior into these kids heads and let them live their lives. Much like parents of any college students. Once the kid is off the practice field or out of the classroom, it’s up to them. If coaches are unaware their players are heading out for Memorial Day weekend for wrongdoing, you can’t punish them. Should the player be punished? Yes. Should the agent be punished? Yes. But at the same time, would YOU know what an agent looked like when you met him? Probably not.

Nobody knows what they would do until presented with that particular situation so you can’t judge it after the fact when you weren’t involved. Let’s see how this investigation shakes down and go from there.

Dawg Gone It you don’t know bee-squat. I am an exec recruiter. I talk to people every day that went to colleges you’ve never heard of and they make five times what either of us make – and I am an evil rich person according to Obama. The whole GT vs UGA academic arguement is pointless. UGA is filled with education, journalism, and literature majors because it has to serve those needs as a state school. GT is filled with EEs, MEs, CEs, and assorted other egg heads. Let’s compare GT earnings only to UGA business grads – more relevant. Better yet, let’s compare GT to MIT – oh crap! GT is a distant also-ran in that race. BTW, this is a football blog.

This is a freakin NCCA problem and the players and schools shouldn’t be punished to harshly for this in my opinion. Predatory agents could be stopped in their tracks if the NCAA had any guts to do something. It’s a simple solution if you ask me. The NCAA and the NFL work together on this problem. The solution? If an agent is caught giving improper benefits to an NCAA athlete then he would be banned for life from representing players. The NFL has control over agents getting a license to be a player rep. Why can’t the NCAA put pressure on the NFL to punish agents? Hell, Roger Goddell sure loves punishing players!

All kinds of idiotic posts. UGA is rated the second best Public University in the SEC behind Florida and is one of the top public universities in the Country. I did not go to UGA but attended another state school but am tired of everyone knocking the Georgia Flagship school. As a Bulldog fan I did not poke fun of Alabama, Florida, etc for this Agent Gate because I feared this may be more widespread and more big schools would be hit. When everything is over there will probably be wide spread Suspensions through the Colleges in the Southeast. At this point in Big Time College football there are a lot of glass houses around so I would be careful before I started throwing stones. These athletes generally stay connected and are coming from the same system that creates this mess.

People are focusing their anger on the wrong person. They need to take their anger off agents and send it at the NCAA for being a joke and pimping players. Players are the ones who really bring in the money for college football. The NCAA tries to push forward the laughable joke that they only care about the student athletes when they extend the season by adding an extra game and allowing them to have conference championship games to make extra money for schools and conferences. The NCAA is the frickin joke. College athletes need to start their own conference for pay and stop the joke of the NCAA in its tracks.

Fact is, UA(Saban) immediately suspended Dareus as soon as he found out he was there. It is tough for these kids. Many of these student Athletes are from humble backgrounds. And they attend school with many kids, from wealthy means. They can get caught up in wanting to be able to go out have fun and and also buy some nice things. Like their college peers can do. I am not making excuses, but my college life was like a lot of these athletes, from humble means, so I can relate.
That being said, they still should be held accountable if they break rules, and so should the agents.
If Green has lied about this topic. He should be punished, but the NCAA hypocrites should change some rules and help these young athletes who are making millions for their schools, even more.

No reason to assume this is worth rubbernecking.

Jawja,I tried to tell you yesterday. My first post didn’t
make it.I told you it was more to come.Keep your
rose colored glasses on if you want.

How can Jawja have as many different personalities
as they do,and not have guys get into trouble. Why can’t
you guys see things for what they are. How can you guys
have as many dreadlocked guys since M Richt, and not have
guys fail drug tests? Not have questionable pasts or ties?
Someone in his recruiting classes(several actually)are guys that
don’t need to be on campus. Real talk.

Before THE DEFENDERS OF DAWG NATION try to take offense
to my comments, take note that I’m a BLACK MAN. That fact is
only important because I’m an expert on what’s behind certain
hairstyles and attire. Not Richt, not Tony Barnhart, not Larry Munson.

Don’t question my abilities to “call a spade a spade” when I
recognize what’s going on.

Florida, since Urban (what kind of damn name is that) got there, has
had a disturbing blend of sperry topsider wearing guys and dreadlocked,
gold front(teeth) sporting guys. Carlos Spikes ring a bell. Not the only example
but hopefully you get the point.

Circuitously speaking, all fans need to pay attention to our guys. Backgrounds
and pasts aside, all things should be equal on a college campus. Don’t make
exceptions for the purpose of winning football games.

Who cares if the NCAA makes an inquiry? The NCAA makes inquiries all of the time. Why have these inquiries received special attention? The real story will come when there is a formal investigation. By the way, for the clowns on this thread who believe that agents involvement rests only with football and men’s basketball, stop fooling yourselves. Any athlete who stands to make signficant money as a professional is approached by agents. Baseball agents are the most aggressive out there. If you can drive the heck out of a race car, agents are going to approach them. Go to a top junior college game. Those guys that do not look like parents or groupies are probably agents. Who do you think guided top MLB draft Bryce Harper pick and his family to leave high school at age 16? It was not his high school coach, folks. Who do you think is behind teenage tennis players? They are the same agents that are hiding in bushes on SEC campuses. It is a part of sports. Who is dumb enough to believe that it does not and has not happened in sports for years. The NCAA is finally catching on. Big deal!

I think you nerds need to go back to your own blog where you can talk about pocket protectors, your new calculator, and how you can’t get a date. I think all of this talk about red panties has gotten you way too excited. I’m sure that you can find some to look at online since you haven’t seen any real ones (besides your moms).

Why are agents scum? Because they do not adhere to NCAA rules? Have you guys ever seen an NCAA rule book. It is larger than the Holy Bible. Universities make billions (with a B!) on the backs of unpaid athletes. Coaches make seven figure salaries. ADs, even the ones with patties between their legs while drunk driving, make six figure salaries. Stadiums & arenas are build. Sports like volleyball, baseball, track & field, golf, swimming, are funded on their backs. Now, agents are not supposed to reach out to them. I graduated from Virginia Law School in 2001. There were “representatives” from law firms across the globe just “hanging around” in an attempt to “talk.” How is this different? The same is the case at medical schools and top business schools. Agents have to abide by Federal and state laws, which will NEVER and should NEVER mirror the insanity of the NCAA. I guess you guys believe that only the NCAA has the right to manipulate athletes. Give me a break!

When are you football players going to ban together and tell the NCAA to but out of your personal business. everyone has the right to make a living. As long as you dont fix games taking money is fine with me. The NCAA cares less what happens to you once you leave school. Everyone else in America gets to make deals that helps them to make money.
