Interim AD gets $10,000 per month salary supplement

At a news conference on July 6, someone asked UGA President Michael Adams if interim athletic director Frank Crumley would receive the same salary that former AD Damon Evans drew.

“He wishes,” Adams said with a smile.

Instead, Crumley will receive a $10,000-per-month supplement in addition to his existing $190,000-per-year salary during the time that he serves as interim AD, according to a memorandum from Adams to Crumley obtained by the AJC under Georgia’s Open Records Act:

In accordance with your acceptance of my offer to you to assume the duties of Interim Athletic Director, I am authorizing a $10,000 per month supplement to your existing salary. This additional monthly salary supplement shall be effective July 6, 2010 and shall remain in effect until a permanent Athletic Director assumes duties here at the University.

Again, I want to thank you for your willingness to take on these additional responsibilities at a critical time.

Crumley has worked for the UGA Athletic Association for the past 19 years and was the executive associate athletic director under Evans.

Evans would have gotten a raise to $550,000 per year under a new five-year contract that was to have taken effect on July 1, the day after his DUI arrest. Instead, he resigned and accepted a settlement of three months salary (approximately $137,500) plus a previously earned $100,000 bonus.

Adams has said that it could take six to 12 months to hire a successor.

The salary supplement is standard state government procedure for anyone filling someone else’s position in addition to their own while a job search is under way. Not sure if there’s an option to do it or a set percentage, but it’s an acknowledgement that someone is doing two jobs at the same time. It will disappear when the permanent AD is hired.

This is a big waste of taxpayer money. He’s just a gofer filling time, doing what michael adams tells him to do. He shouldn’t be making $120,000 more as a paper shuffler.

Congratulations Frank, you’re now in the Obama “Rich Man” category. That extra money will support a lot of welfare recipients.

I agree he should not be making 190K a year. The extra $10K a month is also joke. In any real business, if a superior leaves, then someone may become the “acting boss” but they do not get an increase in their salary unless they are later promoted. Many times they are passed over. It is so nice to work for select “non-profits” who have monopolies over student athletes.

Jim, it’s my view that anyone doing someone else’s job in addition to their own SHOULD get some compensation for the extra, so maybe “real” businesses need to do the right thing!

What I have been reading above is that most of you people act like you are personally paying out the money for all of the salaries. If you are a wealthy alumni, and or a member of the Bulldog Club, you are the ones who are supporting the atheletic programs. Perhaps there might be a small amount coming out of the State coffers, but not as much as is coming out of the pockets of the ALUMNI.

Is the 10,000 a month a bonus for NOT getting arressted in the first 7 days on the job???? thUGA is a joke!

Okay, I’m a HUGE Dawgs fan, but am I the only one dizzied by numbers here? Evans was making over 500 grand a year AND got a 100 grand bonus? Now, while Crumley ain’t getting near that, who among us would complain about a 10 grand a month “supplement”? I’m a veteran teacher with a master’s degree and I only make about 50 grand a year…period! I’m getting really tired of hearing about athletics and how much college coaches and AD’s make. No wonder a year at UGA is so much! They have to keep the athletic department running no matter how bad the economy gets. And I’ll bet the legislators in this state would line up to donate blood for pay before they’d dare suggest that we spend too much on college athletics. I took 12 furlough days this year so our local, successful high school football program could keep its full funding. Never mind that we had to let go of teachers to balance the budget.

Why was Evans being paid his outrageous salary any way? … and don’t give me that “has to be competitive” cr@p. UGA nation has to get realistic. Lots of people could do that job for less. Where does the line form?

Ron, the athletic department is self-sufficient. It doesn’t detract from the money spent on education at the University.

King Gator

The answer is – $10k per month
The question – What is the typical amount of bail needed to keep the Dawgs out jail?

RON DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH MONEY IS RAISED FROM ATHELETICS TO SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS?

Has UGA replenished their bail money fund yet? It’s got to be low after all these arrests of players and administrators. Maybe the new AD can take care of that ASAP—he’s an accountant.
