D.J. Shockley to Omaha, Kentavious Caldwell to Athens, SEC media to Hoover

A few quick notes to start the week:

  • Former Georgia quarterback D.J. Shockley, recently released by the Falcons, will attend mini-camp with the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League next weekend, according to the National Football Post. The UFL is preparing for its second season, Omaha’s first in the league.
  • The momentum Mark Fox is building within the Georgia basketball program was evidenced by the enthusiastic buzz that circulated around Bulldog Nation Saturday night and Sunday regarding the commitment to UGA by highly touted prospect Kentavious Caldwell. A shooting guard from Greenville High, Caldwell is ranked the nation’s No. 11 overall prospect and this state’s No. 1 prospect by ESPN.com. Check out the story from the AJC’s Michael Carvell here.
  • You should know by mid-week the kickoff time for Georgia’s football season opener vs. Louisiana-Lafayette Sept. 4 in Sanford Stadium. The SEC plans to unveil the full TV schedule for the first three weeks of the season at the start of media days in Hoover, Ala., on Wednesday.  In this new TV age for the SEC, where every game is on television, Georgia’s opener could wind up on Fox Sports South or CSS or ESPNU or SEC Network or pay-per-view. Those TV windows range from noon to night.
  • Just to recap: Times/TV previously have been announced for four Georgia games: noon Sept. 11 at South Carolina on ESPN or ESPN2; noon Sept. 18 vs. Arkansas in Athens on ESPN or ESPN2; 4:30 p.m. (ET) Oct. 2 at Colorado on Fox Sports Net, including Atlanta-based Fox Sports South; and 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 vs. Florida in Jacksonville on CBS.
  • Georgia’s appearance at media days is set for Thursday morning. Mark Richt will be accompanied to Hoover by three of his players: punter Drew Butler, fullback Shaun Chapas and wide receiver A.J. Green. Georgia is the only team taking a kicker to media days — and the only team not taking a defensive player.
  • The SEC expects more than 800 media members in Hoover.
  • Here’s an interesting article in the Columbia, S.C., newspaper, The State, yesterday on the decline in college football season-ticket sales around the South.  As we’ve reported, sales haven’t declined at Georgia –- season tickets once again are sold out — but the minimum contribution required to qualify to buy first-time season tickets has dropped dramatically. If you missed it, here’s the link to my earlier story on that.
  • In one night, Notre Dame surpassed Georgia in off-season arrests of football players (8-7).
  • And who’d have believed just a few weeks ago that, by the start of media days, Georgia would have an interim athletics director and Vanderbilt would have an interim football coach?

things go in cycles… UGA is on an impressive run of good fortune in recruiting.. FB and BB…Athens = Great college town!! new DDDDEEEEE coaches.. Renewed intensity… these SEC games will be close… Gators could lose to TIDE, Dawgs, FSU, and LSU ??? Tide could lose to Ark. S.C. Fla. and Auburn ??? that’s why they play the games…. GO DAWGS !!

Georgia has all the special events pre-football season, they get top rated recruiting classes but guess what … when was the last time they won a NC … 30 years ago!

Yet, every year ‘by dawg fans interpretation’ … they are going to win a NC! I use to use this word in identifying Dawg fans for many years and it still doesn’t get old … DELUSIONAL!

I think they are the ONLY college football program that has a fantasy camp for their fans!

The prognosticators/comedians strike again.

Very possible that UGA could win the East. They could also finish 3rd but I think 1st or 2nd is the end result. Much to the disdain of the haters.

HBTD!!!

PS – No matter what they say, they are truly worried about the direction of the hoop squad.

Looking forward to seeing Kentavious Caldwell lead the dawgs to a ncaa national title. That young man have all the tools to be the best at his position. Mark Fox will win a national title soon. Welcome aboard Kentavious.

Hey Techies,
How did the visit from James Wilder, Jr. work out for you on Saturday? Answer: Not to well. He no-showed at the Institute because he enjoyed Athens so much he stayed an extra day; therefore, he canceled the trip to the Ghetto. In the words of ManBoobs Johnson, Wilder had “bigger fish to fry” in Athens. THWGT!!!!

I’m a huge Bulldog fan, but even I don’t find the time to read all the Georgia Bulldog ajc blogs. It’s amazing to me that people who don’t like the Dogs can find the time to get on the blogs here and indulge their hating.

Tony, unfortunately Kentavious Caldwell won’t lead the dawgs to a ncaa national title. If he is as good as advertised, being the 11th best recruit, he will be another one-and-done. I don’t doubt that Mark Fox will rebuild UGA’s program, I just don’t think Caldwell will be around long enough to see much of the success. Now, if you say that his commitment shows that UGA is on the rise and better things lay ahead, I will go with you on that. (This even from a Tech grad!) I agree with the suggestion that basketball move to the baseball model when it comes to when kids can move to the pros … either straight out of high school, or after their junior or senior years. If that was the case, then your statement might be more reasonable.

How about them Dawgs! All you Dawg haters can kiss my grits! Should be a great year in the NCAA in all sports! Can’t wait! It is time to do the talking on the field, on the court, on the greens, on the horses, in the water and it is great to be a Ga. Bulldog!

I believe Mike Bobo has the most invested in the offensive line that the Tech moron above speaks of. That is why he spoke of the need of the line to be dominant from the get-go this year. We have a very, very easy opener this year. Even easier than the two practice games that opened the 2008 season. If you will remember, even though UGA scored 97 points in those two games, all of the negative talk was about the 38 point6s that the D gave up in those games. The opener this season will be successful if the offensive line is dominant, and of course the defense gives up very little. We should have the running game that we want right off the bat this year, which will prove to be the difference in the next game in Columbia. Last year’s game was more of a shootout between Cox and Garcia, but I don’t think it’s the same game this year.

I remember hearing DJ guarantee that he would one day start in the NFL. Needless to say, I always thought he got a bit of a raw deal at UGA. If he would have transferred out when he had the chance, things may have ended up a little different.

Yep…….how did DJ get a raw deal at UGA???? It was his call to stay and not transfer. UGA did not do any harm to DJ Shockely. Where do you people get some of these ideas?
