Talking football with Todd Grantham: ‘We want to attack. We want to be relentless.’

ATHENS – Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham sat Thursday at the head of the long table in the large conference room in what used to be Damon Evans‘ office suite on the fourth floor of the Butts-Mehre building, talking football with a roomful of reporters:

  • Grantham said junior DeAngelo Tyson will enter preseason practice as the likely starter at the nose position on Georgia’s defensive line, but that doesn’t mean Grantham sees Tyson as exclusively a nose.

“He’s the No. 1 [nose], but he’s a guy who can give us flexibility and play an end position, too,” Grantham said. “Based on how other guys come on at both nose and end, he can move.”

Grantham is looking for Kwame Geathers, a redshirt freshman, and Justin Anderson, a junior who is shifting from the offensive line, to provide options at nose.

Geathers had a good spring, and his continued development in preseason practice is “critical,” Grantham said.

Anderson missed spring practice with a shoulder injury, so Grantham has never seen him on the field. But the 6-foot-5, 330-pounder certainly has piqued Grantham’s interest.

“He’s obviously, from a size standpoint, a guy we feel like can command double teams in there,” Grantham said. “I know he’s worked hard in the offseason to try to learn the system. He’s going to be somewhat behind just because it’s one thing to learn it in a classroom, but then to go out on the field in 90-degree heat is totally different. If he can come on, that obviously gives us some depth. I’m excited about . . . seeing what he can do.”

  • Building depth up front is a high priority for Grantham.

“I believe in playing a lot of guys on the defensive line because up there it’s a relentless approach to the ball each play,” he said. “They’re going to get gassed more than probably some other positions. Sometimes it’s harder, because they’re bigger guys, to get rejuvenated quickly. So rotation is important, and to rotate you’ve got to have depth.”

  • Six months on the Georgia staff have reaffirmed Grantham’s view of this state as a recruiting goldmine.

“The talent in this state is everything I anticipated, and I feel like we can reach all the goals we want to reach -– well, I know we can -– if we just stay the course with what we are doing right now,” he said.

  • Grantham is excited about the arrival of Jarvis Jones, the linebacker who transferred to UGA from USC. Jones will redshirt this season.

“It will be good to get him around the other players [and] get him introduced to our system,” Grantham said, “… because he’ll definitely make an impact in the future.”

  • OK, I know you’ve heard these (or very similar) words from Grantham before. But I thought you might enjoy hearing them again:

“We want to be aggressive. We want to attack. We want to be relentless in our pursuit to the ball.”

I would really like an in depth interview with the whole defensive staff what they are doing and where they are trying to go with this team. These are some really good coaches that no one know a thing about. Try digging a liittle deeper a little hard work never hurt anyone if done in small doses.

I am excited about going to the 3-4 scheme, but one thing I am concerned about is a physical team running it right up the middle on us. All of the uncertainty about the all-important nose guard position is not alleviating my fears. Go Dawgs.

I’m more excited about future years to come with recruiting along the defense side of the ball. I’m thrilled we are putting a huge emphasis on recruiting Georgia prospects. Hope we continue this approach as a building block for great things to come. I honestly believe we can do great things with the guys we have and the young men we are recruiting. All we have to do is wait and see and and continue to develop these blue chip prospects.

I am looking forward to this:

When an opposing QB throws a pass our cover guys will actually be in the same zip code as the receivers. This will absolutely lead to more INT’s and some jarring hits.

Thanks Coach Grantham, Coach Belin and Coach Lakatos. Its about time to GATA !

Remember “My philosophy is velocity”? Kevin Ramsey said that prior to taking over as our d-coordinator. We got all jacked up expecting an aggressive, attacking style D. We’ll win SEC in 2 or 3 years…

Dream on. Change “years” to “decades,” and maybe there’s hope, but not while Mark Richt is head coach.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like Miami and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school plays go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. Here are CTG (Coach Todd Grantham) 5 biggest mistakes…

5. Lining up a depth chart without knowing his players for real. (you have got to be kidding me)

4. Talks too much (Hey coach the cards face the other way)

3. “We are running the 3-4 eer I mean the 4-3…uuuh I mean”

2. His #1 agenda is not UGA…is NFL.

1. Installing the whole playbook in one spring….(this is a 3-4 defense not a 50). This defense should be installed in steps. We will stumble so much it will be an embarrassment in 2010-11 football season.

My advice to CTG:

Quit talking to the press so much.
Do not give away your game plan.
Slow it down dude! Let the players learn before you go balls out dawg!…. This is the SEC not the NFL. The competition on this level of ball is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. My guess is you will not take my advice and get embarrassed before you learn.

the dawgs 3-4 will look so much better than techs 3-4. tech will have a bunch of less talented guys trying to stop opposing offenses with better players while UGA very talented guys will be running around in the backfield of opposing teams executing the 3-4 defense like pros thanks to granthem and company. also you tech will finally see how far a gap you 2 and 3 star players are behind ugs 3 and 4 star players.

it wont even be close..

he is doing everything right and getting everyone excited about the new defense UGA is running

Grantham will prove that he’s worthy of his salary and of the excitement he’s created in Dawg Nation.

With a RS freshman QB, and an offense that will rely on running the ball, field position will be crucial. Great defense controls field position, and with our punter, we should win the battle of field position – as long as the defense is solid.

This season will begin with the anticipation of a kid at Christmas.

Mick, you’ve got way too much time on your hands. It’s morons like you who will have so much crow to eat you’ll choke on it. I’m amazed at the people who think they sound intelligent picking (and that’s what it is — picking) on Mark Richt. What’s ironic is that if CMR really did suck (like Spurrier at SC, Bobby Petrino, or Houston Nutt), you would have nothing to write about at all. There is simply no foundation for bashing the winningest coach in Georgia history whatsoever. The legendary Vince Dooley didn’t win his third SEC Championship until his 13th season and didn’t win his NC until his 16th season. Georgia fans have every reason in the world to believe that Richt will match or exceed those marks. You pathetic haters wish Mark Richt would go away, but it aint’ happenin’.

“Fancy stats aside, it’s hard to make the case that Richt has been anything other than a runaway success in Athens. He’s a genuinely good guy who generally runs a clean program. He also happens to have far and away the best winning percentage of any Georgia coach that stayed for longer than three seasons. The Georgia job is his for as long as he wants it, and it’s hard to see him going anywhere else. Mark Richt and Georgia are a near-perfect fit, and the two will be together for quite some time into the future.” Team Speed Kills

Get used to it. Go Dawgs !!!!!

I am very intersted in seeing how this new scheme works. I think it will benefit UGA against teams like UF, AR, AU, MSU by placing more speed on the field. I am not sure how good it will be against the heavy run, but there really aren’t too many of those teams left. I’m sure CTG has an adjustment for it.

I’m so glad I got on this blog today and read the insightful analysis of Mick and Football Mind. Two obvious experts on everything in life.

1 who can predict and tells us that we should not even bother to watch UGA football for the next few decades because he already knows the outcome.

Another 1 who must be an adviser to NFL coaches and college coaches since he tells Coach Grantham what to do, what to say and how to act.

I feel so enlightened.

A Tim Tucker article with open comments! wow this is crazy…now I can finally say this. You are such a UGA blow hard…you and the AJC had no problem plastering the UT players all over the AJC and you left the comment section wide open for anyone to say whatever they wanted about those kids. When UGA embarrassed itself, shortly after, you closed the comments so no one could say anything negative about UGA. This practice is fine…as long as you do it for every school…including Georgia Tech and UT. Allow free speech in all situations or none…you cant play favorites and claim to be a journalist all in the same breath. Just my 2 cents.

Well, he certainly knows what we all want to hear. Let’s hope they can deliver.

Nose tackle is the most important position in the 3-4, as Alabama will soon find out now that Cody is gone. Do we really have a guy that can clog up the middle like that? I just don’t know.

the depth chart right now is not set in stone. it will change about 3 or 4 times before the first game. being a former player i would like to know where i stand on a depth chart. its not crazy to name a depth chart that is not set in stone..colleges do it all the time. breeds competiton which is always a good thing in sports.

No I know there are but the arrest articles were closed…thats my issue. I am just commenting on the arrest blogs and the fact that the UT arrest blog was open while the UGA arrest story was closed. Can we stay on topic please…of course there are negative comments about UGA….a lot of people hate the school and its fan base. I dont but there really are a lot of people who do for some reason…your comments are illustrating to me why. JB I am a Libertarian…but we are not talking politics at all. Just journalistic integrity and fairness to those who have not yet had proper due process…you know the whole innocent until proven guilty thing. I think all players no matter what school should be protected from public terrorism like this….at least from the journalists. Bloggers can say what they want…but a journalist should never chose a side. The AJC bloggers chose a side when they posted mug shots, ripped Darick, and left the comment sections wide open. They should have done the same thing to the UGA players to remain fair…thats my opinion. “class over”…. You had a sarcastic remark at the end of your comment. Whats wrong you cant take it but you can dish it out.

Yellow Hammer and Football Mind, they actually did have Spring Practice and a scrimmage so coaches should have an idea of a depth chart at this point. I have never coached at D-1 level but it does make sense to know by this point your players and some of their strengths.

Everyone talking about how bad a coach the CMR is is funny. All joking aside this is the most consistent 9 year stretch in UGA history or least since 1950 anyways. The dawgs have underperformed the last two years and coaches have been changed. I think understated is the respect that the LB coach and DB coaches coming in have from the ranks. Not counting wins and losses if UGA goes 9-3 this year and shows improvement in fundementals, less stupid penalities, etc, I will be pleased and feel we are back on track. Also the talent level is still there to the point we can compete with the Alabamas and Floridas of the league.

Yellowhammer- Coach Grantham named one guy as starting nose guard and even at that it says will LIKELY be the starter at the nose position. If you really and truly believe your beloved TIDE doesn’t already have a pre-determined depth chart then you are seriously mistaken.

MonticelloDawg

Don’t want to beat a dead horse, talking about the depth chart, but it would appear to be essential to avoid chaos. Without one, when it is time for the first August scrimmage, do the players draw straws to see who goes on the field first? Do they flip coins? Guess a number between 1-100, and the closest ones make up the first unit? The coaches will make adjustments as they learn more about the players, there will be many changes as constant re-evaluation takes place.

That critical depth that he speaks of is what troubles me THIS year. We are going to have a lot of “gassed” guys out there as the games and season roll on. Building that depth is going to be key. Personally, I think we are going to start the season very sloppy and tighten as it unfolds. This is not the year to demand that Mark Richt deliver a 10-win season. Another 8 or 9 win season with the usual Tech win with better defensive results overall may have to suffice.

Grantham makes immediate impact qwhen he comes on to a new team. Colts went from 3-13 to 13-3 in Grantham’s 1st year. Browns went from 4-10 to 10-5 in his 1st year. Colts, Browns, & Cowboys ALL had best year in 15 years when Grantham was on staff. Grantham was offered 2 times the defensive head coach by Nick Saban, at Mich St, and later at Miami. Grantham also has been training Alabama in the off-seasons.

Grantham is an excellent teacher. He keeps things simple, doesn’t overload his players, and doesn’t run a big playbook. He reps over and over so guys master what they’re learning. He rotates a lot so if he gets an injury, it doesn’t effect his year. He cross-trains so guys know what the other guys are doing.

People are going to be surprised at how much better the Dogs play, especially how well they play in the first 3 games.

Belin and Lakatos are 2 excellent coaches too. Gonna be fun.

Mick – thanks for that useless and boring speech. Based on your comments all of college football should just stop because Florida and Alabama are the holy grail. Let me remind you…Alabama has been gone for 10 freaking years because they sucked. Saban will leave and they will suck again. Florida had Meyer come and he has gotten it done but he had Teebow as well. Teebow is gone and Meyer will leave as well.

UGA is improving their recruiting and improving their focus and aggressiveness. It is funny how 1 8 win season has all of a sudden made us irrelevant. I think we are going to be back on track and look to whip Florida’s ass this year, not that it will be easy but it can be done.

If we continue to recruit well and improve coaching as we did in the offseason this year, I think we are fine and the only thing irrelevant is your opinion. Now the it is almost 10:30 so you are going to have switch out the breakfast food to start preparing for lunch and practicing your lines….’You want fries with that….’

Yellow Hammer- Grantham has been in the NFL over a decade he is a very good judge of Talent. That being said the depth chart is not set in stone at all but he has one because he needs that to start installing and organizing his defense. Thats why he is the coach and getting paid so much. Does that mean they are not still going to compete? Hell no. ALot of coaches name starters after spring but there are going to continue to compete still. He knows what he is doing.

And our roster is not a secret. I don’t think letting on that the guy that are on scholarship at a particular position are actually GOING to be the guys playing at that position. I fell comfortable with Grantham announcing to the table that he does not have any hidden aces under his chair.

I’m pretty sure that SC, Ark and everybody else is not going to refer back to the quotes from the summer about who he is excited about to derive at their game plan. I wish!

The D will be much upgraded versus the last few seasons. Martinez’s Defensive Philosophy centered around Defensive Ends getting great penetration in order to pressure the QB. Occasionally blitzing LBs/DBs to create pressure. The problem that got created was our linebackers had too much responsibility and not enough edge speed. We just didn’t have the right skill position players to make the D work and Martinez didn’t have the ability to adjust. In comes coach G…. the 3-4 is premised on having the linebackers create a delayed pressure. It forces teams to account for all 4 linebackers versus 3… at the second tier you are having to trap 2 linebackers vs one and therefore it becomes a more aggressive D. It will have the potential to struggle against run heavy teams. Having said that, this defense allows more flexibility and doesn’t center around requiring certain players to win on every down. Our D won’t be a top SEC D this year… Alabama, Auburn and LSU will probably be ahead of us. What you will see is fewer roughing the QB plays and late hits. You will see an uptick in DB calls – holding and pass interference – but you will get that with more aggressive play and quicker ball release from the opposing QB.

The D will fundamentally be challenged by how efficient we are in the number of plays our Offense is able to produce. Unfortunately, watch the game tapes over the last two seasons and we ran less plays than our opponents. I love the air it out and score the deep play action bombs… but if we have a shot of having a lights out D it comes from keeping the D fresh. If we start seeing a lot of 3 and outs, we are again in trouble. Murray scares the crap out of me because he doesn’t show great accuracy. It is very difficult to teach that and it is critical. Hopefully, Booboo puts together a better run package (i.e. NO MORE quick toss sweeps) than last year. I mean we have the beasts to run the ball…. we are Running Back U…. get back on that horse.

Too many players playing off of talent, instead of team. in 07, we had the team working together, and that’s the difference. 3-4, and todd’s passion will do good in UGA. If we could just do the same on Offense, we would have something.

I still see no reason why, even with this lousy offensive product we have put on the field the last 4 years in a row now, that this team cannot win 12 games this season with 12 unranked teams on the schedule.

Of course, it has been an off-season of distractions now hasn’t it ?

I mean we are # 1 in the Fulmer Cup Standings for the season and # 3 Fulmer Cup Standings All-Time now for UGA.

Let the nay sayers giggle, they know that they never ever attended ANY school, beyond some sad Atlanra public HS and so, they bang away on the mom’s PC, eating Cheetos and slugging down copious amounts of big urange drinks.

Let the Big Dog eat.

@maddawg: you’re right but i think it’s customary not to give too much away in the spring game, especially if you’re installing a new system. we were actually in a base 4-3 for a lot of that game. i expect CTG to keep his word as far as attacking and being aggressive.

like a lot of you, though, i’m worried about depth across the front 7 and especially up the middle. i suspect we’re going to be a little soft on the run early in the year. fortunately, our toughest opponents in the early part of the year (SC and Arkansas) don’t run the ball especially well. a couple of our freshmen are going to need to contribute up front (garrison smith, and maybe morant or stripling in passing situations). houston and washington are going to be terrors off the edge, and the secondary has a chance to be very, very good. i believe it’s going to be an exciting fall for the dawgs!

Blah Blah Blah…. let’s see it on the field. I want to see the desire and the will to make a play. I want to see a team that can respond to being hit in the mouth and comeback. I want to see sacks. I want to see INT’s. I want to see a QB that isn’t careless with the football. I want to see competent play calling on a regular basis. And until I see these things, I will keep my expectations low.

I’m tired of this half a$$/finesse approach to football that this team has played the last few seasons. And I’m REAL tired of the hands off blase approach to coaching that Mark Richt has adopted the last few seasons. Either take an active role in this team’s success, or hit the road! I’m sick of it. UGA has one of the best revenue generating athletic departments in the nation, has one of the best college towns in the nation, and has some of the best in state recruits in the nation. There is no reason why our program can’t be just as good or better than LSU’s. It’s time to step up our game and be nationally relevant, and if Richt can’t do that for us anymore then it’s time to look in another direction.

Football_mind…….guess your title doesn’t fit you at all. You said “the competition is unlike any thing Grantham has seen”….he coached in the NFL numb..nutts !! And as far as the depth chart….Tyson has played, he has seen him in the spring……how long should he wait??…. until Thanksgiving turkey is done…..anyhow…..very funny to see guys talk about what a coach should do…..funny, cause these are the same guys that have never even played two hand touch in the back yard…lol….Go Dawgs!!!!!!….oh yea, I almost forgot…..Who is your daddy Tech fans……you got it…UGA!!!!!!

Since this piqued my interest, let’s look at these 13 years. In the span from 1997-2009, Tennessee is 7-6 against Georgia.

The 7 wins: 1997 (38-13), 1998 (22-3), 1999 (37-20) 2004 (19-14), 2006 (51-33) 2007 (35-14) and 2009 (45-14). The ONLY game you can consider close is the 2004 game.

The 6 losses 2000 (21-10), 2001 (26-24), 2002 (18-13), 2003 (41-14), 2005 (27-14) and 2008 (26-14). Two nailbiters, 3 comfortable wins and ONE blowout, the 2003 game.

So, winning at least 8 games yearly during this time frame is nice and all, but losing 7 games to Tennessee mostly by blowout ain’t good. I’m sure a Florida fan can post THEIR record against you in this timeframe, and THAT won’t be pretty either.

So this Vols fan hopes Coach Richt sticks around for a LONG time. We look forward to many more wins against the Dawgs!
