Logan Gray: full-time wide receiver AND backup quarterback?

ATHENS –- When Georgia’s football team opens preseason practice, Logan Gray likely will be working full-time at wide receiver. But if Aaron Murray gets hurt early in the season, Gray “naturally” would be called on to play quarterback.

That’s how offensive coordinator Mike Bobo sized up Georgia’s backup-quarterback situation Wednesday.

The Bulldogs’ quarterback depth chart has Murray No. 1, Gray No. 2 and freshman Hutson Mason No. 3. But the picture behind Murray has been muddled since April, when coach Mark Richt said Gray would be given a chance, as he desired, to earn playing time at receiver.

“It’s not 100 percent, but right now [Gray] is going to be working full-time receiver and trying to get in that mode to see if he can help us there,” Bobo said Wednesday. “We don’t want to jerk the kid around and say you’re doing this one day and [that] the next day.”

But who, then, would take over at quarterback if Murray, a redshirt freshman, is injured in preseason or early in the schedule?

First, Bobo knocked on wood -– a conference-room table –- to try to ward off  injury to Murray.

Then, he answered: “I’d say naturally it would be Logan Gray if something happened because he’s got experience and he’s practiced that position for three years now. I’d say [Gray] unless the freshman [Mason] comes out here and lights it up and you feel like, ‘Hey, we’ve got something right here.’ You never know who will surprise you, but if something happened I’d probably say Logan right now.”

It’s an unusual situation: a backup quarterback who might not practice at quarterback.

“It is scary,” Bobo said. “It’s scary starting any season with a new quarterback that hasn’t played . . . and now you don’t have any depth at that position, [which] is scary. But that’s where we are.

“We as an offensive football team have really got to depend on our offensive line this year, and hopefully this is the year we stay healthy and stay together and play like we think we can play.”

Georgia safety Shawn Williams‘ family lost their home in Damascus, Ga., to a fire Tuesday night. Damascus is in Early County in southwest Georgia.

Fundraising efforts are underway to help the family replace belongings destroyed in the fire. After consultation with the NCAA, UGA said donations can be deposited into a special account at: Bank of Early, attention Andy Smith, P.O. Box 527, Blakely, GA, 39823.

Offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who has missed almost all of the past two seasons with knee injuries, is expected to be ready for the start of preseason practice. But Georgia is “going to have to wait and see how he progresses” in practice before trying to figure out how the offensive line might be shuffled to accommodate his return, Bobo said.

“If he comes back healthy and is able to play this year, it will definitely be a bonus,” Bobo said. “Where he fits and what we do there, I can’t answer that right now. There’s a lot of practice to determine that.”

Could be a nightmare if Murray goes down. Hopefully, he stays healthy and Gray can stay at the WR spot.

Could be interesting. So. Carolina game could Hutson have to play some. I don’t know if Logan has what it takes if he hasn’t won the job over the time he has been at UGA. Hutson is one good HIT away from playing, ok maybe 2 good hits.

If Gray needs to play, then use the package designed for him, not for Cox like last year. He’s a roll out and run quarterback. So far, all I’ve seen from Gray is for him to drop back and pass on plays called by BoBo.. He’s not Cox or Stafford. Open it up.

It isn’t as big of a deal as it is being made out to be. Hines Ward played running back and wide reciever and then we had to put him in at QB and played great.

If Logan Gray is our backup, then we have no backup. See the previous two years of performance. I am not commenting on his heart because if Joe T and Joe Cox had been measured by heart there would be no issue. Unfortunately, the quarterback/offensive coordinator should be held accountable for this situation.

Why not??? Texas A&M had one of the most successful passing attacks in the nation last year…One of their top receivers was none other than their #2 QB…Rashad Jones nearly killed the guy!

Presumably by the opener Bobo will have decided who the backup QB is and have him prepared. The concept of the #2 QB being a full time WR is crazy – this isn’t pro football where you have plenty of time to practice – the NCAA limits practice time.

Overated THUGA in for a long year with rookie QB and Logan ” I ain’t no Hines Ward” Gray as the back up. Mason was overated as a 3 star. Maybe BOO BOO will direct snap to wrong way Caleb on his moter scooter.

Tough dilemma. Do you play Mason when you can to get him some snaps or do you hold those snaps for Murray who really needs as much live action as he can get? By this, I am talking about the lay-up first game. The OL better be ready to carry the weight because they ultimately will be the key to the season.

A big gamble. I saw LG in a few dog games on TV last year and he never had a chance to look like a QB should…predetermined play that was not pretty. And they seemed never to work.

If it is 100F in Columbia, you guys might need two or three @QB.

Murray is so over-rated that it’s pathetic, and this will be obvious in game 2 against SC.

July 14th, 2010

Being named the starter takes a lot of pressure off a kid. The same would go w/ Gray if he is needed and the job was turned over to him. Playing in the SEC is pressure, but trying to win a position and fulfill a lifetime dream of QBing at a major football program is also a heck of lot of pressure for a college kid. I suspect Gray will step it up and do a great job if needed, and Murray should benefit from being the man going into the fall. What is this fascination with Met, he’s gone, get over it. He is exactly the immature young man (thuga) that you fans want kicked off the team to clean up this program reguardless of skin color.

Life long Athenian and Dog fan. We could lose most of our SEC games this year, and that’s my expectation going into the season. Let’s be realistic: New defense, new coaches, new quarterback (with no experience), young team, and all the “Bad JuJu” in the air (arrests, AD firing, and that stupid “hot seat” tag for the head coach) Just hope fans could be reasonable and patient. Where is our right to play for the ntaional championship every year codfied?
