ATHENS — Georgia backup tailback Dontavius Jackson, arrested on DUI and other charges last weekend, has decided to transfer to another school, UGA said Wednesday night.
The latest development came three days after Jackson, a redshirt sophomore, was suspended for at least the first six games of the 2010 season by Georgia coach Mark Richt.
Jackson will leave UGA after summer semester. He played in four games last season, rushing for 38 yards on four carries. He was well behind Washaun Ealey, Caleb King and Carlton Thomas on the Bulldogs’ depth chart at tailback.
Jackson was arrested by UGA Police early Saturday and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, underage possession of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, following too closely, violation of the move-over law and violation of learner’s permit.
He is the fourth player to leave the Georgia football program after arrests this year. Richt dismissed linebacker Montez Robinson, quarterback Zach Mettenberger and backup punter Trent Dittmer from the squad.

I heard Matthew Stafford got caught DUI’n it around Athens once. Yeah, the cop told him he was sorry he pulled him over, gave him his daughter as a gift, and then took him out to Amici’s for some buffalo chicken Garcheemar, which by all accounts, was delicious.

That is great news, now Richt wont have to kick him off the team. As far as King goes he should be suspended for more than one game. I think most UGA fans are feed up with Richt’s attitude when it comes to these kids getting in trouble with the law. They are making Georgia a laughing stock in the football world. Nuff said.

I hope this sends another message to all these kids. I don’t know how many “messages” it will take for some of them, but I hope there will be some degree of reality to hit these guys in the face.
Everyone wants to enjoy the college experience and being out on their own. This privilege comes with a price, however – responsibility. When there is no responsibility, realization is that an individual is not ready for college or being on their own. If not ready for college, how can someone be ready for the NFL?

UGA’s football team is better off without Jackson. Thugs and street trash are not welcome at UGA. The program has greatly improved. I pray King is still alive after his mother gets through with him. I thought King was above this in life quality. Is this the second year in a row he has been suspended? I thought he was suspended last year. If he was, he did not learn his lesson. Ability should never rise above character and integrity. Talent without life qualities (Big Ben/Tiger/Damon/Zach/Jackson) is worthless. CMR needs to draw the line and the next one to willingly step over it needs the full weight of CMR’s shoe to fall on them.
I am totally tired of this crap. If CMR can’t handle the players, how can he handle the team?

Got a feeling he got the impression that it was in his “best interest” to transfer. I bet Coach told him as much. Also, that is comical about Da’Rick Rogers all of the sudden “not being involved” in the fracas at the Knoxville bar. Sounds like someone got to the guy who doesn’t want to prosecute or to the KPD. I am not a lawyer so someone help me out, does it matter if the victim does not want to prosecute? Can’t the DA prosecute him if the charges warrant it? Looks like Dooley is gonna fail in his first real test on discipline. Myles was an easy dismissal because this was his second arrest in four months (the first one being handled “internally”) but it looks like super thug Rogers is gonna skate.

Damon Evans just took it to a whole new level. The people that feel it necessary to bring up Rogers and Tennessee just don’t get it. We are in trouble big time. We need a change. tdog, UGA is no more a joke than many, many schools that have kids get in trouble, and yes there have been too many, but kids have been dismissed and punished, perhaps more is needed but that is not up to us to decide their fate, it is the responsibility of the university and the dawgs coaching staff to deal with it…I believe they have and at no time have i seen Coach Richt ignore or not punish a young man for his actions…There is alot that goes on behind the scenes that we don’t see, but i can asure he takes it seriously, you just don’t agree with his handling of it and thats your right, but i trust his judgement along with the other coaches on what is the appropriate punishment to hand down..We may think he should be much harder on them, and maybe he should but true dawg fans will trust his judgement…I can tell you this with absolute fact, as i was in school there many, many years ago and believe me some of the things that went down and unreported happened almost every weekend..not excusing it but trying to say that its not something that has happened under Coach Richt’s watch…Lets give him the benefit of the doubt and since the university puts alot of faith in him, perhaps we should also…I

Not to be cold-hearted, but this is excellent news. Jackson was suspended for at least 6 games in 2010 already. His season was shot. A wasted scholarship for the Dawgs in 2010, due to player stupidity.
The good news is that we have another scholarship to offer in 2011. Hopefully awarded to a solid athlete and student that will represent UGA the right way.
And yes, the guy in Bar Knoxville is declining to prosecute Da’Rick so he’ll skate on most of the charges. Dooley will probably slap him with a one or two game suspension. But, most likely, this is not the last time Mr. Rogers will have his picture taken, both profile and full-face. He doesn’t seem to be too bright.

Kid made a mistake and CMR dealt with it. He did what he felt he needed to do in his best interest and I have no problems with his choice. He was down on the depth chart and missing half of a season so why not transfer. Now UGA has freed up a scholly in the process so I think no one should complain as it probably serves all parties equally well in damage control.

That Coach Richt suspended one of our STARTERS for more than a game and who was it? It seems to be a double standard…. yea if you look on paper King was “just” drinking underage riding along….but when you read between the lines, King duped Jackson into driving HIS car. Seems to me like Jackson is the scapegoat here and King could have stopped the whole thing by not giving his keys to Jackson and tricking him into driving his car.
Richt is not afraid to make an example out of the bench warmers, but he protects his starters…. that is why we can’t correct this problem at UGA and why it is getting worse. It is a double standard. We are an education of higher learning …. not a football team that offers classes to the players.

Well, you see, that’s the problem isn’t it? If Richt can’t control his players off the field, he can’t control them on the field.
So get used to more penalties and dumb moves on the field and more arrests off the field. And not winning an SEC championship.
Eventually, when enough people connect all the dots, Richt will be sacked, but until then, get used to suffering.

Two things that Blow my mind:
1. How opposing fans think that waving red panties will in anyway bother mature fans. I’m sure there are a few crack pots that may get upset but for the most part no one really gives a flying fu*****
2. Why the inbred trailer trash continues to call these young men thugs. Those of you that call them that really really want to use another word but you are either not man enough or the filter is preventing you. I tend to believe it’s the lack of balls.
They are not thugs and if underage drinking makes you a thug then they are in great company in Athens because there are a boat load of thugs and most of them are white.

For some reason, Richt never seems to punish starting players like Odell Thurman, 2 games, Danell Ellerbe, 2 games, and now King, 1 game. He only pulls scholarships of players he doesn’t expect to compete, or their crimes are too big for him to cover up, like Mettenburger, Montez Robinson, and fall guy, Dontavius Jackson. Richt continues to shoot himself and the university in the foot with his double standards.

Good riddance. It’s no one’s fault but your own. The easiest thing in the world to do is NOT get arrested. You can’t take the punishment for your actions, you don’t deserve to suit up in the red and black. Take your “easy way out” mentality elsewhere. As for King, he was drinking….yes. But he didn’t get in a fight, and broke no other laws himself. He was simply a passenger. He deserves the suspension for wrong place, wrong time, but not more than a game or two. If he does it again, boot him, too. I’m ready for a completely clean program with none of these off-season problems. Way to go, Richt. Thanks for stepping up the penalties for poor behavior.

gator forever, you didn’t offend and thank you for the comment, my post really is for everyone on here that wants to jump on each school when something negative happens…i know that it is sometimes in fun, but i too am tired of all the negative stuff going on around college ball and the pros also…i think discipline starts at home and i understand it probably doesn’t exist in some homes as it should. Its not an easy thing for a coach to dismiss a young man, and yes some deserve it, thats for sure, but all of them don’t so discipline has to be handled in certain ways for different issues…There are lot of people on here that seem to think they have an answer as to what Coach Richt and staff should do with these kids and i do agree with some of them, but the continued bashing of Coach Richt and his discipline or lack of discipline in some eyes gets old…As far as Damon Evans, its sad for the university, his coworkers, but most of all his family and kids..I can’t explain his actions nor will i excuse it, but i do know he had always carried himself proudly and did an excellant job as AD …I’m not sure where i was really going with this post, but i did want to thank you for your comments and appreciate you reading my posts..You are correct however, we have had an horrible run lately with all the negative stuff…and thats why i wish the dawg nation would not be so quick to judge another program, i try not to do that, but i will always defend the dawgs when needed….

“Man enough”…you’re missing “lame’s” point my friend. The word thug meant something different when I was growing up(60’s and 70’s). Most people only use that term these days to describe a certain look and behavior, regardless of color. Damon is not a thug, and most underage college kids are not thugs. You may be right on the root meaning of the word……but that’s about it.

When Dooley asked Bowden if Richt was “too nice of a guy” before he hired Richt, Bowden said Richt’s a lot tougher than he appears, and plenty tough enough.
Sad to see the young man go, but glad Richt was tough.

As my name shows I am a huge Tennessee supporter. However, I am just saddened by the judgement shown by a few of our players. I am sorry for the officer in the hospital and pray for a complete recovery. I also pray for the young men involved that somehow they get their lives straightened out. I am also saddened by what is happening at Ga. We have to have faith that Coach Dooley and Coach Richt get their attention and handle it firmly. I know fans on here are jumping on UT even though this article is on Ga players but some fans tend to do this. As for me…well obviously I hope all of the negative goes away for UT….but I hope that for Ga as well. I think we have two excellent me in Dooley and Richt to turn it around. Well, here’s to hoping there are no more headlines…unless they are good ones.

dawgster…. sure coach Richt takes is serious if the player ain’t going to see serious playing time anyway. When you look at the whole story and not just the charge, King was just as guilty as Jackson. If Richt would be taking things serious, the dogs would not be 3rd in the nation in arrests over the past 4 years and 1st this year. UGA has the same kids that other schools do… they all have temptation… it is how it is managed at the top that puts the fear of God in these kids. The good players are protected…. simple as that. Double standard as has been said many times before and even the players know it….. You can’t just pray and hope that things get better, you have to man up and Richt can’t control the players

You are right dawgster…. Richt is doing a great job….let’s just look at his record of discipline…. Worst in the nation this year and 3rd worst in the nation over the past 4 years…. go back and look at punishments over the past 4 years…. and you will see the double standard.
UGA policy is to hold them out for one game minimum…. I will bet you money that there will be no further punishment for King.
If you wanted to teach the kid a lesson you would hold him out for an important game, not the sisters of the poor opener.
BTW, I live in Charlotte, NC and a QB up here at my daughter’s HS has signed with UGA. He has been kicked off of the team in high school for an un-named offense. Every kid in the HS knows it is rape, but they can’t say it. How is St. Richt going to turn this kid around? Do you think UGA will refuse him….. heck no. Jane Kemp said it…. Ethics don’t matter at UGA when it comes to sports.

georgiagirl…. you are right the news media in Gainesville eats it up, the news media in Knoxville eats it up, the news media in Nashville eats it up (wait that is Vanderbilt) but the point you are missing is that UGA has a serious problem and it is out of control. The problem is at the top…. this goes hand and hand with the penalty problem. Same kids are everywhere, it is the coaching staff that need a new approach.
We can’t stick our head in the ground and say we don’t have a problem and we can’t blame this on Willie now.

Hell, I smoked AND inhaled, unlike Bill Clinton; and, sad to say, I drank way too much on far too many a night while a student at UGA. What about your kids? Did none of them ever drink? No DUIs? No instances of bad judgment? I’m not proud of my actions, not the least, but to hold these kids to a higher standard than we hold ourselves and our own kinds… well, it’s just plain sad.
The bottom line for me is not what these kids did, but what Richt and the rest of UGA Athletics does in response. And for the past couple years, CMR has had a pretty short leash on his guys.

All Vol, good post last night, and there are many of us that agree.
That being said, the off-field discretions are becoming more serious and in many cases more violent, i.e. Montez Robinson at UGA) Bar Knoxville at UT, Robert Hall at GT.
Last night I read the article recounting what happened at Bar Knoxville and the bottom line is someone could have easily been killed, Again, this could just as easily have happened at UGA, GT, you name it.
Anywhere you put a bunch of teenage football players with easy access to alcohol, one push, one shove, and they react with a pack mentality, like wild dogs, and from reading last night’s article that is exactly what happened. Again, could have been any school.
The question is, when do Richt, Dooley, etal., take serious/violent offenses like this and say, that’s 3 strikes in one night and your scholarship is gone?
We (Richt) gave Montez Robinson a lot of leeway, and he was eventually dismissed. It appears Da’Rick Rogers may get the same leeway from Dooley. Easy for me to say, since I’m not paid to win football games, but maybe you send a group home after an offense like this and that will create the “change in culture” that Dooley is talking about.
Just MHO.

If the truth were told here on this blog, I suspect that 80% of the folks here are under the age of 25 and have no grown children and likely, never attended a major U or maybe even some local JC. They do not know what goes on at a university or even some small college ……….not a clue.
A university grabs kids ( athletes ) from the available local talent pool. UGA fans for sure would love to always have the Billy Paynes or the Terry Hogues or the Dr. Mixon Robinsons or the Dr. Tommy Lawhorns or the Hershal Walkers or the Buck Belues or the Andy Johnsons of the world. So would about 99% of EVERY U in the nation. Florida had their Heisman QB recently ………..great kid. Need more like him. How about a Pat Sullivan?? Love to have kids like he was. How about Archie Manning??
If a kid ends up being a problem, then he likely is pre destined by his genes, sadly ………..CMR being a Christian, simply by being around these kids, makes them better, if only for one moment, given their usually horrible family backgrounds. Don’t kid yourself you are a hypocrite and you are definitely spreading malicious rumors that you do not have all the facts about. Your comments are ten times worse than any drunk driving or riding a scooter with an invalid license. Please let the Police and authorities handle anything in the future, it appears that you may be a junior detective in training or something. I do not condone UGA players getting caught with DUI, etc. however they should be held to the same standard as the rest of the student body. If they do something that violates the Student behavior code they should be thrown out of school. If UGA, UT or any other school threw out any students for underage drinking, etc, it would probably reduce the Freshman and Sophomore classes by more than half.

Okay, unless you’re going to have the players all move into the Richt house, which I doubt the water girl would go for, I can’t see how you can blame their non-team activities on CMR. I hate it as much as anyone, it is embarassing no doubt. But if they know that their punishment will start out at a 4 a.m. appointment at the track to run steps for an hour and be suspended for part of the season, and then escalate to possible dismissal from the team if the behavior continues, and still go out and do boneheaded things, I really don’t know how that becomes CMR’s fault. The alternative is to have a 24 hour monitor on them, and lock them in their rooms at the appointed hour. I mean, it’s emabarassing but at some point the kids’ have to be responsible for their actions.

I was listening to sports radio about how hard it is to recruit at Vanderbilt. In the real world the choice would work from Vanderbilt down to Valdosta State as far as where you are going to school. You wouldn’t have to beg real students into going to Vanderbilt, most of them are turned down at the get go. Then you give some kid an opportunity to come there that doesn’t deserve it and you have to beg him to just look at the school. Same thing happens at Georgia. Most of these trouble makers couldn’t pass in high school more less understand what a college education can do for them. We as a state or even a region need to get our priorities straight. Stupid ain’t good no matter what some one told ya.

Georgia is so proud to have a head coach like Mark Richt, who took Donnans players, turned them over to Brian VanGorder and parlayed a $700,000 salary into a $3,000,000 dollar salary and he owes it all to BVG, David Greene, and David Pollack and the rest of the players Donnan left him. It’s been 5 years since the Dawgs went to Atlanta to play in the SEC Championship game. The incoming class was in middle school when that last happened. Georgia fans can’t see the real problem with the arrests and it’s the fact that Mark Richt’s recruits don’t or won’t respond to his leadership on or off the field. The Dawg Nation is so happy that Mark Richt is not Ray Goff they are in denial. Fire him now, or fire him later, but fired he must be if Georgia ever wants to get past Florida and Alabama in the near future. Maybe Hershel’s grand children can straighten it out.

To win in the SEC all of the players must be focused and dedicated to the TEAM! DUI and breaking TEAM rules is focusing on self. No matter how good an individual athletic may be, focus on self, and not the team…the team will lose! If those who remain do not understand, sent them on their way, those who remain, and are dedicated to the team, will win.

UGA players get pulled over by UGA POLICE passing by an unrelated traffic stop. The result, 7 counts, 6 against the driver and 1 against the passsenger (underage drinking.)
At UT, a “pack” of football players, in a BAR, knock a KNOXVILLE POLICE OFFICER unconscious and brutally beat a patron (2 black eyes, broken nose, etc., see the ESPN report), yet not ONE is even TESTED for alcohol consumption by KNOXVILLE POLICE. Why? Gee, could it affect the starting lineup in September? We can’t risk that.
Get the picture? It couldn’t be much clearer.
In Georgia, you break the law, you get charged, by UGA police, Clarke County, etc.. In other states, for other SEC schools, they live in the 80s, so assailants aren’t charged and video tapes of the incident disappear.
