ATHENS — Georgia backup tailback Dontavius Jackson, arrested on DUI and other charges last weekend, has decided to transfer to another school, UGA said Wednesday night.
The latest development came three days after Jackson, a redshirt sophomore, was suspended for at least the first six games of the 2010 season by Georgia coach Mark Richt.
Jackson will leave UGA after summer semester. He played in four games last season, rushing for 38 yards on four carries. He was well behind Washaun Ealey, Caleb King and Carlton Thomas on the Bulldogs’ depth chart at tailback.
Jackson was arrested by UGA Police early Saturday and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, underage possession of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, following too closely, violation of the move-over law and violation of learner’s permit.
He is the fourth player to leave the Georgia football program after arrests this year. Richt dismissed linebacker Montez Robinson, quarterback Zach Mettenberger and backup punter Trent Dittmer from the squad.

gator forever, you didn’t offend and thank you for the comment, my post really is for everyone on here that wants to jump on each school when something negative happens…i know that it is sometimes in fun, but i too am tired of all the negative stuff going on around college ball and the pros also…i think discipline starts at home and i understand it probably doesn’t exist in some homes as it should. Its not an easy thing for a coach to dismiss a young man, and yes some deserve it, thats for sure, but all of them don’t so discipline has to be handled in certain ways for different issues…There are lot of people on here that seem to think they have an answer as to what Coach Richt and staff should do with these kids and i do agree with some of them, but the continued bashing of Coach Richt and his discipline or lack of discipline in some eyes gets old…As far as Damon Evans, its sad for the university, his coworkers, but most of all his family and kids..I can’t explain his actions nor will i excuse it, but i do know he had always carried himself proudly and did an excellant job as AD …I’m not sure where i was really going with this post, but i did want to thank you for your comments and appreciate you reading my posts..You are correct however, we have had an horrible run lately with all the negative stuff…and thats why i wish the dawg nation would not be so quick to judge another program, i try not to do that, but i will always defend the dawgs when needed….

If everybody who ever drank underage is a thug then Georgia, Florida, and alabama are all full of thugs. Is it good that GA players have been caught drinking, no license etc. NO!!! Are these players thugs? Absolutly not!!! Thugs are the guys who rob, rape and assault other people.

Why are so many of you hypocrites referring to Jackson as a “thug.” He got a DUI. He made a stupid mistake, but he didn’t beat anyone into unconsciousness, Wish the kid luck and show some class.

“Man enough”…you’re missing “lame’s” point my friend. The word thug meant something different when I was growing up(60’s and 70’s). Most people only use that term these days to describe a certain look and behavior, regardless of color. Damon is not a thug, and most underage college kids are not thugs. You may be right on the root meaning of the word……but that’s about it.

If you don’t respect your coach, teammates, or school, you don’t deserve to play for a top 10 team like Georgia.
When Dooley asked Bowden if Richt was “too nice of a guy” before he hired Richt, Bowden said Richt’s a lot tougher than he appears, and plenty tough enough.
Sad to see the young man go, but glad Richt was tough.

As my name shows I am a huge Tennessee supporter. However, I am just saddened by the judgement shown by a few of our players. I am sorry for the officer in the hospital and pray for a complete recovery. I also pray for the young men involved that somehow they get their lives straightened out. I am also saddened by what is happening at Ga. We have to have faith that Coach Dooley and Coach Richt get their attention and handle it firmly. I know fans on here are jumping on UT even though this article is on Ga players but some fans tend to do this. As for me…well obviously I hope all of the negative goes away for UT….but I hope that for Ga as well. I think we have two excellent me in Dooley and Richt to turn it around. Well, here’s to hoping there are no more headlines…unless they are good ones.

Good post RunningDog…Again it amazes me how many people refer to these young people as “Thugs”..It really says alot about them and how much class they lack…Mr. Jackson will be paying for this mistake for a long time, i hope he learns something, and he ought to be very thankful that he wasn’t involved in a serious wreck where someone is injured or killed…These young people don’t think in those terms when they are 18-20 year olds…how many really did..But calling these young men “Thugs” is wrong, yes they have to be more responsible, but please don’t call them “Thugs…

All Vol…classy post. I live in Atlanta and have several Vol fans that are class acts like you. I am not sure why so many on here are trashing Tennessee. You are correct that this article is about UGA but in some sick way I think it makes some people feel better to trash another school instead of focus on their problems. Thanks again and I also hope that both UGA and UT have seen the end to bad headlines.

Another good Posts All Vol….it would be nice if some others could show that kind of class…We can be enemies on the field, but when this kind of stuff happens there are a lot of losers and peoples lives are affected…I’m not saying that we shouldn’t have fun on these blogs and that we shouldn’t fight for bragging rights, but all this that has happened at UGA and Tenn is very serious as it has been at other schools at other times….Anyone that thinks these Coaches don’t take these things very seriously could not be more wrong…

If they win this fall nobody will care. If the dawgs are in the SEC title game not one dawg fan will care about all this. Go dawgs. Just win.
Take for instance the gators. In recent history they have had quite a few arrests of their own, but nobody cares because they win.

dawgster…. sure coach Richt takes is serious if the player ain’t going to see serious playing time anyway. When you look at the whole story and not just the charge, King was just as guilty as Jackson. If Richt would be taking things serious, the dogs would not be 3rd in the nation in arrests over the past 4 years and 1st this year. UGA has the same kids that other schools do… they all have temptation… it is how it is managed at the top that puts the fear of God in these kids. The good players are protected…. simple as that. Double standard as has been said many times before and even the players know it….. You can’t just pray and hope that things get better, you have to man up and Richt can’t control the players

Don’t Kid yourself…If you really think thats the kind of person Coach Richt is then you don’t know the man..you say he didn’t give King the same punishment..Well you are correct, but he was not driving and even though i’m not sure there want be additional punishment for him, he was not behind the wheel and this was not the second time that there had been an issue with him, so no he probably doesn’t deserve the same punishment, but thats not for you or me to decide, it is in the hands of the dawgs coaching staff and the university..I will say if you know anything about the dawg program then you would know that there have been many, dismissed, disciplined as you call good players the past few years….Maybe Coach Richt could get you on staff so you could put “fear of God in them as you put it…

Reading some of these people post is really bull. You have a lot of people on here that are throwing rocks and they live in their little glass houses. Really no one on here ever got drunk under age. . BULL@HIT The only different with these guys are they are college football players so the news media eats it up. But they Don’t write about the kid who’s not a football players in sports, why because that’s not important news. REALLY. These guys mess up they pay for it. The news media loves to rip theses kids from all the schools. Well if you want to call someone a THUG how about the murders the ones who rape. REALLY someones life ends every few minutes from some THUG killing them. SOUNDS LIKE THIS BLOG IS A BUNCH OF HOLY ROLLIES

You are right dawgster…. Richt is doing a great job….let’s just look at his record of discipline…. Worst in the nation this year and 3rd worst in the nation over the past 4 years…. go back and look at punishments over the past 4 years…. and you will see the double standard.
UGA policy is to hold them out for one game minimum…. I will bet you money that there will be no further punishment for King.
If you wanted to teach the kid a lesson you would hold him out for an important game, not the sisters of the poor opener.
BTW, I live in Charlotte, NC and a QB up here at my daughter’s HS has signed with UGA. He has been kicked off of the team in high school for an un-named offense. Every kid in the HS knows it is rape, but they can’t say it. How is St. Richt going to turn this kid around? Do you think UGA will refuse him….. heck no. Jane Kemp said it…. Ethics don’t matter at UGA when it comes to sports.

You know i’m proud to have been given the opportunity to go to UGA, and i will support the football program as i have always, no i don’t like the issues that we have more than our share of lateley…but its easy for people such as yourself to sit behind a computer and hurl insults at others..Try posting some real solutions if you have any on how you would handle the discipline…Is that all you have is “go get a room”…

georgiagirl…. you are right the news media in Gainesville eats it up, the news media in Knoxville eats it up, the news media in Nashville eats it up (wait that is Vanderbilt) but the point you are missing is that UGA has a serious problem and it is out of control. The problem is at the top…. this goes hand and hand with the penalty problem. Same kids are everywhere, it is the coaching staff that need a new approach.
We can’t stick our head in the ground and say we don’t have a problem and we can’t blame this on Willie now.
Why are we #1 overall this year and #3 overall the last 4 years?

I almost laugh and cry at the same time at all of the bloggers here who are so high and mighty and judgmental. Did none of you ever screw up? Not at all? Hell, I smoked AND inhaled, unlike Bill Clinton; and, sad to say, I drank way too much on far too many a night while a student at UGA. What about your kids? Did none of them ever drink? No DUIs? No instances of bad judgment? I’m not proud of my actions, not the least, but to hold these kids to a higher standard than we hold ourselves and our own kinds… well, it’s just plain sad.
The bottom line for me is not what these kids did, but what Richt and the rest of UGA Athletics does in response. And for the past couple years, CMR has had a pretty short leash on his guys.
