Bulldogs buck football tradition, drop two-a-day practices

ATHENS –- Georgia will abandon a piece of football tradition this summer: two-a-day practices.

The Bulldogs have a tentative practice schedule that, for the first time anyone around the UGA program can recall, calls for no two-a-days.

Two-a-days -–  the stuff of legend among generations of players –- have been on the wane with Georgia and most other college teams in recent years. Georgia had three sessions of two-a-days last summer.

NCAA rules limit teams to 29 practices before the first game, and Georgia basically decided that preparation for the season can be more productive with 29 one-a-days, allowing time between sessions for more film review and walk-throughs.

But it is a break with tradition, to be sure.

“The older you are, the tougher it was back then,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said Wednesday. “Talk to the older coaches on our staff; they had four- or five-a-days. That’s how Coach [Stacy] Searels and Coach [Rodney] Garner would like to say they had it at Auburn.”

Georgia Tech will continue to have a limited number of two-a-days this year. The Yellow Jackets have three days of double practices on their preseason schedule, spokesman Dean Buchan said.

Bobo said that Georgia’s staff discussed the elimination of two-a-days and that coach Mark Richt made the decision “after visiting some places and talking to some other head coaches” who have dropped double practices in recent years.

“The good is you can teach a little better [with one-a-days], where you might not be able to get as tough as you would like them,” Bobo said. “But everybody is playing with a limited number [of players] now, and there’s a fine line with injuries. You can see what injuries do to a football team. … I think we’ve got a good plan.”

The players, you can be sure, will welcome the demise of two-a-days.

“In their minds, mentally, they’re probably going to think it’s a break,” Bobo said. “But we’re still going to have 29 practices to get ready for the first game, no matter how you break it down.”

And it’s still going to be hot.

Georgia begins practice July 31, about a week earlier than usual, for its Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette. The Bulldogs are generally scheduled to practice six days per week throughout August.

Georgia Tech starts practice Aug. 5 for its Sept. 4 opener against South Carolina State.

This also gives the coaches more time to supervise players. Very smart. This could be a new trend if it helps minimize injuries and gives them more gas in the second half of games. With the players keeping their bodies in shape all year around, i am surprised more teams do not do this.

Dam good idea…..if you’ve never been thru 2-a-days…..they’re grueling!!

It’s got nothing to do with “can’t handle ” practice you jaket tard. I think this is smart. It should definitely cut down on pre-season injuries and give them more time to focus on film, x’s and o’s, etc….. When you’ve just been thru a morning practice and know you’ve got another one coming in the evening, that’s all you can think about. The “intangible” part of football is the last thing on your mind.

I like the idea of having only once a day practices. The two-a-days never made much sense to me. Some genius said in his blog that there would be fewer practices, but I thought it was made perfectly clear in the article that the number of practices would remain the same.

As a former football player, I think I can speak for most players when I say that no one likes 2 a-days. It makes sense on the high school level because teams are only given a limited amount of time to get ready for the season. The same is true of college players to a degree, except for the fact that players on scholarship are training year round. There is definately no replacement for physical contact, but what most of these guys need is to become better students of the game. I think if they’re going to lessen the physical contact, then they need to up the game film study time. UGA has really lacked a collective football IQ the last few seasons and to me that comes from a lack of studying game film. To me that is what really separates guys who are just good athletes from guys who are great football players. And especially considering that a new defense is being implemented, this is a great time to really break down game film. If these guys have dreams of reaching the next level, they are going to have to demonstrate to scouts that they can be students in the film room along with having the natural ability.

DawgInMemphis

July 14th, 2010
2:56 pm

Its a good idea so long as it doesn’t compromise them getting in shape. If the “second half” of the day consists entirely of them sitting around an air conditioned film room, then we could be in trouble. Is it considered a “practice” if the team captains (no coaches) take the team out for an afternoon 30 minute +/- exercise session ? Sprints, calisthentics, and grass drills just so their muscles aren’t dormant the entire afternoon.

Otherwise, this could be a great move because I’m sure those afternoon sessions can be incredibly counterproductive as far as learning goes when you’re dog tired.

I wish a lot of you people would read the article and not the headline. They will still practive the same amount of 29 practices however they will have the ability under NCAA guidlines to focus on others areas that you normally do not have time to focus on (weight training, special teams, team meetings etc.).

Will there be fewer hours of practice in those 29 days? 2-a-days gives the body time to recover between sessions. Can TG and Co. instill the MENTAL toughness

July 14th, 2010
3:29 pm

I want the three new D coaches to instill mental toughness. We have really lacked that. I am not talking about swagger ……. I am talking about the 09 OSU game and the KY game and the LSU game. With LSU we fought back so hard and let it slip away and in 08 with LSU we put a physical whuppin on them BUT they nearly won it with Charles Scott up the middle ………he hit the corner in 09 and ran over our small LB and game over. Yes, Orson Charles was celebrating and that cost us. Yes, there was a bad call on AJ with a TD “celebration” that hurt too. MENTAL TOUGHNESS is what we have been lacking and LSU in 09, KY in 09 and Tech in 08 illustrate that. In these games …………..we seem to simply check out, day dream ………..this is a lack of mentall toughness. It is so obvious when you see it.

If we overcome this things ………… then UGA can re emerge ………….. we always get our share of talent. Folks are about 65% correct about UGA ………..we “do get players and then, what happens?” We have not been mentally tough and that is coaching and coaching at every position.

This should be the first sign of the new D regime. It ought to be apparent on the first snap.

Go Dogs.

ugaclassof2004, I’m inclined to agree, but put a different slant on it. You can only absorb so much info in a given day of practice. Once you reach a point mentally and physically, it’s time to call it a day. Makes sense to show up on a new day, mentally and physically refreshed.

Gatorzone, Spanky, etal. I too would be curious to see, how many major injuries occurred during the second session of the two a day practices.

Can TG and Co. instill…..you hit it on the head. Remember the end of the G-Day game when the scuffle broke out between Ealey and a DB (Wiliams?) Grantham was screaming, yelling, cursing and spitting in his face about the mental mistake that would cost us 15 yards in a real game. Reminiscent of Van Gorder. D players hated to come to the sideline after making a mistake when BVG was standing there! This seems to be a priority for Grantham.

Players need time to practice DUI’s too. Players can’t just focus on Football and Hard Classes. Boys got to get down that DUI without getting attested or hitting other objects. The best way to get ready to play in the early season heat is to not hit or practice outside. You need to be inside in the A/C watching film or playing football on the XBOX. No good comes from being in a situation with fatigue setting in and you have to make the right choice on the play. Dropping the two-a-days sounds like a good idea to me. If I were trying to break in a new QB and install a new defense I would want the guys as fresh as possible. With the stress CTG is putting on fundamentals having more practices of shorter duration is a good idea. When one is tired old bad habits tend to creep back in. I know this from practicing rifle shooting. An hour a day for a week is much better than one five hour day in that sport.

@ All I will say -

Who is E L Ivory? Not a Georgia Tech player. I’m guessing the comparison with Jarrard Tarrant (#37) has something to do with Eddie Lee Ivery, a Georgia Tech graduate an former running back.

Ivery was a player with Green Bay, and he was with James Lofton at a strip club in 1986 when Lofton was arrested for sexual assault on a stripper. Ivery wasn’t charged. He did spend time in jail in 1984 while with the Packers for the crime of driving with a suspended license. While with the Packers Ivery drank, smoked, got divorced, and he ultimately with through AA meetings his last 6 years with Green Bay. He came back and graduated at Ga. Tech 13 years after his college career.

Jarrard Tarrant was arrested on charges of alleged rape and jailed more than 2 months after the alleged crime. He was released on $40,000 bond. Tarrant was suspended from the team indefinitely, pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. The DA didn’t drop the charges until the season was in progress, so Tarrant was redshirted for the 2008 season.

So, yes those 2 players have something very much in common…they spent time in jail, but only Tarrant did while in college. Are you in need of more athletes for your list? They are not hard to find.

Gator fan here w/ some stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with UGA’s practice schedule… I just read Stewart Mandel’s Mailbag from si.com and he completely smashes Tech’s claim of 4 national championships. Thought you guys might like this… I’ve included it below… enjoy!

Just a clarification regarding the email you received about Georgia Tech winning its first national title in the ’90s — it’s incorrect. That was the school’s fourth national championship.
– Rubin, Atlanta

Fair enough, but here’s a little clarification on my part. The Mailbag fully concedes the right of any school to recognize whichever national championship selectors it deems legitimate from the pre-modern era, and the inherent ambiguity that comes with it. Alabama, for instance, proudly claims 13 national championships, while other sources recognize it for 12. Georgia Tech, for its part, is certainly entitled to claim the four that it does: 1917, 1928, 1952 and ‘90.

For uniformity’s sake, however, the Mailbag does not recognize so-called “national championships” prior to the advent of the AP poll in 1936 and coaches poll in 1950, seeing as most “polls” prior to then were conducted by obscure individuals or organizations and oftentimes were rewarded retroactively. Therefore, while Yellow Jackets fans are perfectly entitled to brag of the 1917 and ‘28 teams that wowed the Helms Athletic Foundation, or the ‘52 team that claims as one of its selectors the INS — International News Service — the Mailbag officially recognize the 1990 UPI coaches poll trophy as that school’s “first” national championship.

Any further disputes may be taken up with Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who will “personally guarantee” any championship your favorite team dreams possible.

Being old school here, don’t know how i feel about the new practice schedule…but here is what i predict: if we don’t havfe a strong season and if we appear to be getting beat physically, then everyone will attribute that to the lack of two-a days, if we have a really good season and have fresh legs and can physically handle some opponents then credit will be given to the coaches and team for their insight…I support this staff on the decision and hope it will turn out as a benefit to the dawgs this season…

UGA does have some 19 year olds that do booze it and we did have Montrez Robinson who has gone.

Sounds like a good idea. More time on the mental aspect of the game and less physical exertion. The mental part has been UGA’s downfall the past couple of years (ie: penalties, turnovers and blown assignments). It’ll be interesting to see if some other teams in the SEC follow suit in the coming years.

It is good to see that a coach is not scared to go against tradition and try something new. It is kind of like high school football. Spring Practice is a joke. Ask most high school coaches and they say they do it just because everybody else does. Many do not like it and they know that a kid playing another sport is hampered by Spring Football especially if they hold it in Jan. or Feb.

I wonder how things are going in hallowed Knoxville with the outstanding recruiting class of 2009. The Default Setting is “Blame Kiffin”…which is fun, but it’s also easy. And the easy answers are rarely the right ones. It is worth pointing out, however, the fate of Kiffin’s February 2009 signing class, which we praised for its excellence at the last minute:

(List sorted by Rivals ranking)
#1 Bryce Brown: transferred from program
#2 Janzen Jackson: involved with robbery at Pilot, but charges dropped; reportedly was present at the Bar Knoxville fight, but walked away
#3 Jerod Askew: redshirt
#4 Nu’Keese Richardson: dismissed from team after robbery at Pilot, making a strong case for worst judgment in a crowded field with this class
#5 Marlon Walls: idefinitely suspended today in relation to Bar Knoxville fight
#6 Eric Gordon: redshirt
#7 James Green: did not qualify
#8 Darren Myles: dismissed from team after second arrest in four months, evaded and resisted arrest before assaulting a police officer after Bar Knoxville fight
#9 David Oku: contributor on special teams and in the mix at RB
#10 JerQuari Schofield: redshirt
#11 Marsalis Teague: contributor at WR
#12 Mike Edwards: dismissed from team after robbery at Pilot
#13 Daniel Hood: redshirt, prior issues
#14 Arthur Jeffery: redshirt
#15 Greg King: indefinitely suspended today in relation to Bar Knoxville fight
#16 Robert Nelson: redshirt
#17 Nyshier Oliver: cited for shoplifting last fall
#18 Zach Rogers: minor contributor at WR
#19 Nigel Mitchell-Thronton: contributor at LB
#20 Kevin Revis: redshirt
#21 Rae Sykes: no signficant contribution
#22 Toney Williams: medical redshirt

Of Kiffin’s 22 signees, six of the top twelve are either not with the team or are on indefinite suspension. Ed Orgeron’s infamous “We’re not angels, and we’re not going to recruit angels” quote was quite right.

But…there’s a reason it’s called the Fulmer Cup and not the Kiffin Cup (not yet, anyway). Discipline problems at Tennessee were not a new thing for Lane Kiffin, nor are they new for Derek Dooley. The difference for Fulmer was, the vast majority of his discipline problems did not involve such large groups of players at once, and did not involve such serious crimes. I don’t know if you can fairly draw a straight line between the group incidents and Kiffin’s recruits, but it is worth pointing out that we’ve seen a third of our 2009 class run into serious problems, and they’ve only played one year.

Some o’ you brainiacks who say CMR is getting soft; players will be outa shape blah blah blah….This aint rocket surgery. They’re still running 29 practices. They are NOT cutting back on the number of practices. They are NOT gonna spend every afternoon in an air-conditioned room watching film, etc etc. Read the sentence in the article…”allowing time between sessions for more film review and walk-throughs…” Several other top programs are and have been doing the same thing. And as has been so astutely pointed out, usually the 2nd of 2-a-days leads to a point of diminishing returns anyway.

I think it’s a swell idea.

I like it! Way back in the day coaches used to dehydrate the players because they thought it made them tough. Dumb ideas need to be discarded. One a day= 1 – much more time in practice, overall, when counting mental aspects; 2 – much more time for recovery, making increased exertion possible. 3 – more time for stretching and conditioning, reducing injuries, hopefully. 4 – more time to bond as a unit; last and not least 5 – less time over the summer to go out and get arrested for something!

This may actually lead to increased practice time. Usually practice during a two a day aren’t as long as a practice during a one a day, for instance a two-a-day may consist of two practices an hour and a half a piece a one-a-day may consist of a practice that is 2 hours. When you add it up, they are spending more time on the field. I love the idea, I’ve worked with a college football team and that second practice on the same day is usually a waste. Also, during one-a-days you’ll practice in the heat of the day a lot of times getting you more used to the heat. Not mentioning injuries should go down, more time for the mental part of the game, and don’t be shortsighted richt was heading this way with just 3 two-a-days last year, I don’t think this was something grantham demanded.

The only reason they are doing away w/ “two a days” is because they now have more than 29 days to get the 29 practices in since they are beginning preseason practice earlier. I had never heard of it beginning before Aug 1st in the past.

This year they are beginning on July 31st and they dont play their first game until Sept. 4th.

In the past teams would have less than 29 days to get their 29 practices in, thus having to create “two a day” practices in order to get them all in. You can’t forget you have to give the team a few days off during the month long preseason.

This is a non story. Move along people. And use your heads.

I keep reading posts about Richt’s coaching style being too soft or that he is too buddy, buddy with the players. Of course, I doubt if any of these posts come from anyone who has ever attended a practice. (I, too, have questioned Richt sometimes when he calls practice early or gives them a day at the pool.) All this criticism aside, I have watched him pull a true freshman aside and calmly talk to him and place him in a clutch situation and have the guy perform. There is a lot to be said for calm cool and collected when it comes to the players’ confidence and poise.

I read posts about Richt’s lack of discipline. Yet, I have seen him repeatedly suspend players or even expel players who are important to the team because those players broke the rules. What else would you have him do?

In addition to the fact that none of us (the observers) have any real direct insight into how the program is run, criticism of the man’s demeanor just plain seems inconsequential. You may as well talk about his wardrobe.

As far as this two-a-day stuff, my initial reaction was that it’s soft to get rid of it. But, then I thought, you know two-a-days are just a rite of passage more than anything else. Maybe there is not time for rites of passage in a preseason that involves a new QB and a new defensive scheme. After thinking about it, Richt is right on here. Spend the extra time in the film and fundamentals department.

Georgia fans can minimize this all they want but this is a story that confirms what a lot of us already thought, which is that Mark Richt is losing his grip on the team and losing his sense of what it takes to be a winner. Georgia’s problem last year (and indeed most years under Richt) was not injuries. It was that they were SOFT – physically and mentally. When things got tough, they didn’t push through it, they buckled. Making fall camp easier for them to get through is not going to solve that problem – it’s going to exacerbate it!

EagleDown

Perfect example of a Richt UGA team being mentally soft: the LSU game last year. Yes, the excessive celebration penalty was unfair, but it didn’t end the game. UGA’s defense still had a chance to win the game but they weren’t mentally prepared to handle that kind of adversity. They folded like the cheap lawn chairs that are no longer allowed on Georgia’s pristine campus on game days.

Let’s talk about who really owns who in the SEC! Florida owns “The Dawgs” even with an excessive celebration penalty after that infamous Knosho first touchdown — those come soooooo few against the Gators, I guess it was fitting. How many is it now? Slowly so you can keep up — Georgia has won Three (3) of the last Twenty (20) — that’s what I call owning a team and total domination — and, it ain’t lookin’ very good anytime soon for you Dawgs to improve your record in that series. Strange how Coach Richt won’t count the Florida games as “Road” games in his sacred “Road Record” — since every other year Georgia is considered the “Visiting” team. Isn’t the “Visiting” team the one that has to travel on the road to get to the game? 3-17 — Can you count? — Gator Bait!!! And, Brantley can’t wait!!!!

CSRA.

You are right. No one really thinks otherwise. Now, slow, so you can understand it: WE DON’T CARE ABOUT THE LAST TWENTY YEARS. WE DON’T CARE ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK.

Is this excuse #594,392 when the Gators kick UGA’s butt this year?

Go Gators,

No excuses! There are simply no excuses for choking and gagging in games UGA should have pulled off. In a lot of other years, Florida simply had a better coach and a better team. No excuses. I am just saying that the last twenty years don’t matter. NO ONE CARES. 2010 remains to be seen.

Hey ATL Jacket I’ll send your check and a pink slip.

It is mentioned in this column that CMR visited other schools that have dropped two a days. Can anyone name any schools that have set this precedence?
