Facebook campaign likes Matt Stinchcomb for Georgia AD

A Facebook campaign is underway for Matt Stinchcomb as Georgia’s next athletics director.

A “Stinchcomb for AD” page went up in the past few days, and last time I looked, 360 people “liked” it.

Stinchcomb, of course, is one of the best and brightest of former Georgia football players: an All-American offensive tackle in the 1990s, a member of the athletics program’s Circle of Honor and a summa cum laude graduate (3.96 GPA) with a degree in finance.  He currently works, along with former Georgia quarterback David Greene, as a client executive in Atlanta for Seacrest Partners, a Savannah-based insurance brokerage and consulting firm.

The “Stinchcomb for AD” page calls him “a perfect selection for Athletic Director.  A model husband and father, humanitarian, and successful member of the business community.”

Stinchcomb’s reaction to the Web site pitching him for AD:  “I like the pictures.”

“I heard about that the other day,” Stinchcomb told me this morning. “I was at J.T. Wall’s golf tournament down in Milledgeville, and someone called me and told me about it.”

He said he doesn’t know who created the site, which he finds “flattering.”

“It wasn’t something that I thought, ‘Man, that’s completely out of left field,’” he said. “At the same time, there is some exploration that I think needs to be done before you jump in to something like that for consideration or candidacy or what-have-you.”

So … would Stinchcomb, 33, be interested in the job?

“The best way to characterize me,” he said, “is as a very interested observer at this point of what’s going on and what steps will be taken to maintain the trajectory of that program.”  He said the field of athletics administration interests him and that he has spoken with some people regarding the job, although “no one I think in a decision-making capacity.”

Asked if he plans to aggressively pursue the idea, Stinchcomb said: “I haven’t excluded that possibility. But to say, ‘Have I thrown my hat in the ring?’ No, not necessarily. I wouldn’t want to enter into something of that magnitude without doing a significant amount of due diligence.”

The problem, of course, is that Stinchcomb has no experience in athletics administration, and UGA President Michael Adams said last week that he will be seeking someone with a high level of experience.

But it’s a cool Facebook page, in any case. Check it out here.

Stinchcomb has something else on his mind this week: The annual “Countdown to Kickoff Fan Festival” charity event — organized by Stinchcomb, his brother Jon and Greene –  is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the UGA Practice Fields. Former and current Georgia football players will run drills, play games, sign autographs and pose for photos.  Go here for more info.

If he got some experience under the new AD in some position, i could def. see him as a future AD

He is a great, very bright individual. And extremely young to boot. I could see him hired into the system as an assistant of some sort, and then have the opportunity to gain experience to eventually be an (the) AD.

Kam Fong,

Evans was a GREAT AD, just a little sketchy as an individual (which we had no clue until 2 weeks ago). That’s what makes it so bitter, losing him, bc he was doing a mighty fine job in his professional life.

He is a loyal DAWG and deserve consideration with his bright mind and passion for Georgia.

This would be the equivalent of the UT faithful wanting Jeff Fisher, Butch Davis, or some other proven coach, and settling for Derek Dooley.

Huge fan of both the Stinchcomb boys, but hopefully we at UGA are done with OJT. We tried it with Goff, Jirsa, Felton, and at a slightly lower level, Bobo and Martinez. Our recent track record for hiring “first-timers” and relying on the job training in top positions is not good at all! Coach Richt is a rare exception.

Adams is on the right track. We have roughly an $85M annual budget in the Athletics Dept. Add in the upcoming expansion of Sanford, Stegeman upgrades, work for the indoor practice facility, etc. That is not something for a first-timer to cut his teeth on.

An interesting read, but this train will never leave the station.

A finance degree with honors. Is that not the type of person who should at least be given an interview. Dooley has no such distinction before becoming AD, he did alright. Player, All-American and Ring of Honor, whats not to like except his youth. But is he not about the same age as Evans when he got the job? Don’t out think the room Adams. This might be a great choice, who knows.

Now that we’re in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a serious discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any football players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while the clueless Mark Richt has absolutely no control over his players. And then there is the infamous “red panties” incident.

UGA has a lot bigger problem than hiring a new AD.

UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.

Stinch is one very outstanding choice. Let us all face it ………..a university AD job is an ambassorship position. Stinch is very well spoken, very, very intelligent and is loyal to UGA. Adams wants a man to reflect well on HIM and the U secondarily, however.

The second in command at Florida is great and is experienced and IS a UGA man but Adams by passed him two or so years back to get his yes man D Evans.

Frankly, this AD search could be conducted in one half a day IF the candidates are not on vacation and out of touch. Why? ESPN last week said that the “UGA job is in the league with only three or four other big boys …………Texas, Florida and Ohio State …………RICH $$$ PROGRAMS and top notch, as these are and that any qualified person would highly, highly covet”.

I truly hope the search committee looks far and wide for the BEST person. Several great names in play already. Don’t think Stinchcomb is the guy. No experience.

The guy UGA needs is Charlie Cobb, current AD at Appalachian State. Running a very successful program now, former asst AD at his alma mater, NCST (O line), worked in ATL for the Dome, Sports Council and Peach Bowl.

If the powers that be ask around, they will get nothing but great reviews on Charlie.

This is the best idea since promoting Ray Goff to head coach. Stinchcomb may be a true-blue Bulldog, but he has no experience in athletics administration. This would be the WORST decision ever. Just because he is a former DAWG does not mean that he is qualified to be AD. He has NO experience in sports administration. Bulldog59

Chickasaw, I’m with you on “Lame Name’s” comment. Evans was hired because he was young, energetic, open-minded, well respected, with a strong background in finance, and an in-depth knowledge of the UGA Athletic Dept. Widely known as Dooley’s right-hand man for funding. Dooley openly stated, when he looked at any major project, he’d go to Evans and ask if UGA could financially make it happen……

This hire is extremely important to Adams’ future at UGA and his legacy. Harrick (over Dooley’s very public objections) and Evans were both Adams hires. He needs a home run with the new AD.

He might be a good person to work in the department and start training, but this is not West Georgia or Georgia Tech. This is a major business, and as much as I admire Matt (what’s not to like about the guy, plus he went to Parkview), we need someone with major experience and skills. With that said, I would like to see Greene and Matt both get plugged in somehow to the AD. The more independent minded people we can get, the less control Adams has over things. Honestly, NO ONE in Athens likes Dr. Adams, and he knows it. Why the regents keep him around is beyond me.

Matt is on the board for the GA transplant Found., TIM Hudson (Braves pitcher) Found., and has one of his own. Let’s be honest, a lot of the AD job consists of fundraising. He would be a perfect fit! He could come in, keep the current staff (who is doing a fine job..it was D Evans who screwed up), as opposed to any one else who will bring in their own staff!
Experience will come, if DE can do it , no doubt Stinch can handle it!
IDEAL!
