Facebook campaign likes Matt Stinchcomb for Georgia AD

A Facebook campaign is underway for Matt Stinchcomb as Georgia’s next athletics director.

A “Stinchcomb for AD” page went up in the past few days, and last time I looked, 360 people “liked” it.

Stinchcomb, of course, is one of the best and brightest of former Georgia football players: an All-American offensive tackle in the 1990s, a member of the athletics program’s Circle of Honor and a summa cum laude graduate (3.96 GPA) with a degree in finance.  He currently works, along with former Georgia quarterback David Greene, as a client executive in Atlanta for Seacrest Partners, a Savannah-based insurance brokerage and consulting firm.

The “Stinchcomb for AD” page calls him “a perfect selection for Athletic Director.  A model husband and father, humanitarian, and successful member of the business community.”

Stinchcomb’s reaction to the Web site pitching him for AD:  “I like the pictures.”

“I heard about that the other day,” Stinchcomb told me this morning. “I was at J.T. Wall’s golf tournament down in Milledgeville, and someone called me and told me about it.”

He said he doesn’t know who created the site, which he finds “flattering.”

“It wasn’t something that I thought, ‘Man, that’s completely out of left field,’” he said. “At the same time, there is some exploration that I think needs to be done before you jump in to something like that for consideration or candidacy or what-have-you.”

So … would Stinchcomb, 33, be interested in the job?

“The best way to characterize me,” he said, “is as a very interested observer at this point of what’s going on and what steps will be taken to maintain the trajectory of that program.”  He said the field of athletics administration interests him and that he has spoken with some people regarding the job, although “no one I think in a decision-making capacity.”

Asked if he plans to aggressively pursue the idea, Stinchcomb said: “I haven’t excluded that possibility. But to say, ‘Have I thrown my hat in the ring?’ No, not necessarily. I wouldn’t want to enter into something of that magnitude without doing a significant amount of due diligence.”

The problem, of course, is that Stinchcomb has no experience in athletics administration, and UGA President Michael Adams said last week that he will be seeking someone with a high level of experience.

But it’s a cool Facebook page, in any case. Check it out here.

Stinchcomb has something else on his mind this week: The annual “Countdown to Kickoff Fan Festival” charity event — organized by Stinchcomb, his brother Jon and Greene –  is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the UGA Practice Fields. Former and current Georgia football players will run drills, play games, sign autographs and pose for photos.  Go here for more info.

@Stinger….slow news day. I did hear a report of some dickwads at tech running around campus with red spray paint, mens briefs, and scissors.

experience isn’t everything. Sometimes youth has dreams and beliefs that break through the traditional obsticles.

What is the deal with Bobby Johnson? I think he is a heck of a coach. I certainly hope he is okay health wise.

Press conference is going on right now. Bobby Johnson says he is retiring from football due to “personal reasons.”

This is too funny. Experience was EVERYthing when they hired DE who was hired ONLY because he was Black and UGA has such a history of doing the politically correct thing. (Even though DE had experience and did a good job)

But now Experience is overrated!

Stinchcomb would be an excellent candidate to interview for the position. He’s very bright, articulate and a former All-Pro NFL player. You couldn’t go wrong with either Stinchcomb or McGarity.

This is the best idea since promoting Ray Goff to head coach. Stinchcomb may be a true-blue Bulldog, but he has no experience in athletics administration. If he had an interest in that area, he would be working somewhere in the field. This would be a decision based totally on emotion. That’s not what we need.

DawginLex, yes, heard the same thing at lunch. Johnson resigned and Fulmer has already been contacted about that job.

Wow…so this is what counts as “journalism” now? Scouring Facebook fan pages?

Man…this newspaper has really hit new lows.

“Lame Name,” what is your evidence that Damon Evans “was hired ONLY because he was Black?”

This would be the WORST decision ever. Just because he is a former DAWG does not mean that he is qualified to be AD. He has NO experience in sports administration. We need to hire someone that can keep the athletic department profitable. That is what it boils down to. Whoever started this facebook page obviously has no clue.

Chickasaw, I’m with you on “Lame Name’s” comment. Evans was hired because he was young, energetic, open-minded, well respected, with a strong background in finance, and an in-depth knowledge of the UGA Athletic Dept. Widely known as Dooley’s right-hand man for funding. Dooley openly stated, when he looked at any major project, he’d go to Evans and ask if UGA could financially make it happen……

This hire is extremely important to Adams’ future at UGA and his legacy. Harrick (over Dooley’s very public objections) and Evans were both Adams hires. He needs a home run with the new AD.

You guys are missing my Point. I was pointing out how all the bloggers a few days ago were saying that.
I WHOLEHEARTEDLY disagree, I was being sarcastic.
A lot of posters were saying he had no experience and the only reason he got the job was because he was the Poltically Correct choice.

Do you think Matt would have the guts to fire Richt in say the next 2 yrs? If he got the job he might have to do that. I don’t see Matt have the guts or experience to do that yet.

Lame Name: I get your point, and in fact, after sending my message started wondering if you weren’t making a more subtle and ironic statement. I’m willing to bet you’re correct in concluding that some people who asserted Damon E was hired on basis of color are now fine with Stinch regardless of lack of experience. I like Matt (and Jon, for that matter), and I’m sure he’s very bright, but the bg just isn’t there yet.

He might be a good person to work in the department and start training, but this is not West Georgia or Georgia Tech. This is a major business, and as much as I admire Matt (what’s not to like about the guy, plus he went to Parkview), we need someone with major experience and skills. With that said, I would like to see Greene and Matt both get plugged in somehow to the AD. The more independent minded people we can get, the less control Adams has over things. Honestly, NO ONE in Athens likes Dr. Adams, and he knows it. Why the regents keep him around is beyond me.

Jeff Lewis, played for Coach Dooley during the late 1970s, is a very bright guy, very familiar with the AD’s operations, and is a successful attorney in Atlanta. He would be a good candidate.

How long is Matt Stinchcomb’s middle finger? Is it the correct length to qualify for the AD job?

Lame Name and Chickasaw, yeah, I already saw so many people attacking Carla Williams, who has a pretty good resume, ties to UGA, and apparently a reasonable chance at the job as only a “PC” choice. Now, I’m wondering if those same people are now just as adamant about experience with Stinchcomb, who has a far weaker resume for the job.

“UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.”

Oh God, shut up you nerd and crawl back up your butt. Tech has been an embarrassment to everyone, including themselves for having such a laughing stock of an athletic program. As for a Tech nerd like you, you’ll get no answers and you deserve no answers. The only thing you and your ilk deserve is a baseball bat to the skull.

As for Matt Stinchcomb, there is not a snowball’s chance in hell he gets that job, and he is nowhere near qualified. This is one of the premiere athletic programs in the country, and not some fly by night joke like Tech.

Matt is on the board for the GA transplant Found., TIM Hudson (Braves pitcher) Found., and has one of his own. Let’s be honest, a lot of the AD job consists of fundraising. He would be a perfect fit! He could come in, keep the current staff (who is doing a fine job..it was D Evans who screwed up), as opposed to any one else who will bring in their own staff!
Experience will come, if DE can do it , no doubt Stinch can handle it!
IDEAL!
