ATHENS — University of Georgia President Michael Adams on Tuesday named Frank Crumley interim athletics director and appointed a search committee to seek a permanent successor to Damon Evans.

Adams said the search for a new AD could last as long as six to 12 months, and he said UGA would look first at outside candidates for the position.  In the meantime, Crumley, who had been executive associate AD for finance and administration under Evans, will oversee the athletics department.

While acknowledging the difficulty and sadness of recent days, Adams said: “We still have important work to do, and it is time for us to move on.”

He named UGA law professor and faculty athletics representative David Shipley to serve as chairman of the search committee. Also on the committee: Swann Seiler, a member of the UGA Athletic Board; Jack Bauerle, UGA’s swim coach; Tom Landrum, UGA’s senior vice president for external affairs; Carla Williams, the senior associate athletics director; and student representative Robert “Trey” Sinyard.

Shipley said that, given the academic calendar and the “caliber of candidates we’re going to be getting,” he expects the process to be protracted.

“To say we could get somebody much earlier than the New Year would be really, really optimistic,” he said.

One revelation from Tuesday’s news conference was Adams’ inclination to hire Evans’ successor from elsewhere,  although he did not rule out the possibility of Crumley or others on the current staff eventually becoming candidates.

“I think we have three or four people currently on the staff who are very, very strong people,” Adams said. “But my first look in this case is going to be outside.”

The reason, he said, is that “I want an outside opinion to take a hard look at what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. As well as we’re doing it, can we do it better?”

He said he’s seeking a person with a high level of athletics experience, although he stopped short of limiting the field to someone who is or has been a major-college athletics director.

“This is one of the five or six best AD jobs in America, in my opinion, and I can assure you there’s no shortage of interest,” Adams said.

As the search committee does its work, Crumley will be in charge.

He has worked in the Georgia athletics administration in a variety of roles since 1991 and was chief financial officer under Evans.  Georgia has one of the nation’s strongest athletics programs financially, with current cash reserves of about $60 million.  Crumley also has been responsible for day-to-day operations.

Crumley said Adams asked him Sunday if he’d step in as interim AD.

“I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Do you want to sleep on it?’” Crumley said. “I said, ‘Absolutely not. I’ll do whatever I can.’

“If anything comes up,” Crumley said, “I’ll lean on the president and the senior VPs and the Athletic Board for guidance. And other than that, we’ll chug along.”

Seems like as good as any for the interim post, but it had better be McGarity as the permanent hire when it’s announced.

It’s a shame that somebody didn’t try to calm the Nancies down a few days ago by suggesting that the situation would be handled in the proper way, proper time frame, and the national search for a new and better AD would be the controled story by mid week.

Was the jackets behind the bee trap for Damon or did Crumley and crew want to avoid paying out the big contract? Either way, Damon made a bad choice.

The athletic department has become a money making beast on Crumley’s watch, so I’d say this is a good move for the interim and he should be considered a strong candidate for the permanent position. However, my vote goes to McGarity.

First of all, I will say that the contributions of a whole team of people got our athletic department to where it is, not just Damon Evans. In light of that, the second point is that we should bring on someone that will continue moving that entire team in the same direction we were going. Whether that is an outsider or someone internal, we need to take the best available person to stay the course that Vince and Damon set in motion.

It should have been McGarity when Vince “retired,” but Damon did a good job until a few days ago. Crumley will be a fine caretaker in the interim, but Adams has got to go with McGarity this time. Adams is a politician at heart and will take the temperature of Bulldog Nation and find that McGarity is a solid choice that will be met with widespread approval. I would be shocked if McGarity isn’t the choice at the end of the day.

I guess you didn’t read the story. Adams wants to get his own man in the position. If that was McGarity then he would’nt have chosen Evans six years ago. Stating that Adams will make a decision by the end of the day is a dumb comment, even for a Dawg alum.

Twelve months is too long. A diligent search should be completed within six months. The ship should not sail without a captain for a whole year.

There is a DVD noted under the evidence section of the Georgia State Patrol incident report on Evans’ arrest. Troopers routinely video and audio tape DUI arrests and the entire incident will probably be on video that will be released as soon as the prosecution of Evans is completed. Evans’ video should be a You Tube sensation.

A man with judgment as poor as Evans does not deserve the position of AD at UGA.

The AD search will go just like the DC search. Make your list, strike off the top 5 (you’re UGA afterall), get turned down by the next 4, hire candidate 9, 10 or 11. Pick the guy who’s got enough Dawgtard in him to win over corrupt dognation.

Damon and I attended middle school together in Omaha, Nebraska. I spoke with him a couple of years ago and he was so happy with the success that had come his way. I know Damon and his family and I know them to be a people of faith. Yes, he made a mistake and must suffer the consequence. However, I speak from experience….the good Lord doesn’t walk with you during “some” parts of this journey….He’s with you during the good times and the bad….. I’m praying for my friend’s strength during this difficult time…….

I have to say that I thought McGarity was a good candidate last time, but am suprised to read that the search committee didn’t even have him on the short list after thier 10 person initial interviews.

So was he unwilling at the time, but would be now? Has he entertained and turned down any offers over the past 6 years? Does he own any orange tank tops or jorts?

Seems like a solid (qualified, popular) choice to me now, but I believe their are potentially a dozen excellent cadidates out there, including actual ADs at other schools.
