(Click here for full report on Adams’ news conference.)
ATHENS — University of Georgia President Michael Adams on Tuesday named Frank Crumley interim athletics director and appointed a search committee to seek a permanent successor to Damon Evans.
Adams said the search for a new AD could last as long as six to 12 months, and he said UGA would look first at outside candidates for the position. In the meantime, Crumley, who had been executive associate AD for finance and administration under Evans, will oversee the athletics department.
While acknowledging the difficulty and sadness of recent days, Adams said: “We still have important work to do, and it is time for us to move on.”
He named UGA law professor and faculty athletics representative David Shipley to serve as chairman of the search committee. Also on the committee: Swann Seiler, a member of the UGA Athletic Board; Jack Bauerle, UGA’s swim coach; Tom Landrum, UGA’s senior vice president for external affairs; Carla Williams, the senior associate athletics director; and student representative Robert “Trey” Sinyard.
Shipley said that, given the academic calendar and the “caliber of candidates we’re going to be getting,” he expects the process to be protracted.
“To say we could get somebody much earlier than the New Year would be really, really optimistic,” he said.
One revelation from Tuesday’s news conference was Adams’ inclination to hire Evans’ successor from elsewhere, although he did not rule out the possibility of Crumley or others on the current staff eventually becoming candidates.
“I think we have three or four people currently on the staff who are very, very strong people,” Adams said. “But my first look in this case is going to be outside.”
The reason, he said, is that “I want an outside opinion to take a hard look at what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. As well as we’re doing it, can we do it better?”
He said he’s seeking a person with a high level of athletics experience, although he stopped short of limiting the field to someone who is or has been a major-college athletics director.
“This is one of the five or six best AD jobs in America, in my opinion, and I can assure you there’s no shortage of interest,” Adams said.
As the search committee does its work, Crumley will be in charge.
He has worked in the Georgia athletics administration in a variety of roles since 1991 and was chief financial officer under Evans. Georgia has one of the nation’s strongest athletics programs financially, with current cash reserves of about $60 million. Crumley also has been responsible for day-to-day operations.
Crumley said Adams asked him Sunday if he’d step in as interim AD.
“I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Do you want to sleep on it?’” Crumley said. “I said, ‘Absolutely not. I’ll do whatever I can.’
“If anything comes up,” Crumley said, “I’ll lean on the president and the senior VPs and the Athletic Board for guidance. And other than that, we’ll chug along.”

I’m sure you clowns are all perfect and write so well between slugging down that can of Bud by your side as you sit in that 20 year old lounger you got from your daddy.
Wishing Damon Evans well. I hope his marriage survives this and that his professional life turns back positive. As for you who are so quick to credit ‘others’ in the athletic department for succcess, you should be ashamed of yourself. And those of you who want to throw ‘RACE’ into this – you need to wake up and get out of 1965 or move to Alabama and become a Tide fan.
As for the usual Bama/Tech clowns – let me see. “Bite Me”. Your pathetic – the time you spend on a UGA blog speaks volumes about your own personal life and self esteem. Oh and ‘Bob’ – CMR will still be at Georgia long after you and your brothers and sisters turn on Saban and run him out on a rail after a difficult season or two. (And yes Bob – there will be those years). You strike me as a little “THICK” – so understand I’m taking a shot at you and the others like you – not a Saban. He is a fine coach.
But I digress (Bob that means turn aside from the main subject) – you clowns are CLASSLESS. Get a life!

Gee, I thought the primary goal of NASA gad been reassigned to fighting global warming. So glad to hear that was a misunderstanding. It’s Muslim relations. Great! Want to inspire young people to study math and science huh?
I would rather spend a several billion dollars on building just one SaturnV rocket and launching it for no other reason than to get some modern IMAX footage of it soaring in the air, than the way we flush the money down the toilet now.

GoDawgs24 – That Stanford Senior Asst. AD for external affairs has all that, media relations, marketing, community outreach, ticket sales, plus, managed the $$$ stadium upgrade. Name is Chris Hutchins. Also was an analyst for one of the big financial firms for 5 years. Director of the Silicon Valley bowl, too, fund raising, marketing and ticket sales. BS University of Chicago and MBA from MIT.
That’s the kind of people who are out there.

UGA should just fade away. Lack of ethics has ALWAYS characterized this program, even when their “god” Dooley was in charge (remember Jan Kemp). It is a sad statement that UGA is the flagship of the University System in the state. My Doberman could probably get accepted and graduate from the college, not to mention getting on their football team to boot.

Some university has to be the flagship. The only 4 choices are Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and the Medical College of Georgia.
In the Navy, the flagship is the ship in the fleet that carries the “flag” officer (admiral). The metaphor does not translate particularly well to the University System of Georgia hierarchy and its 35 schools.

Hey 24, Greg would get my money for one, and there is plenty of big money out there that would contribute as well if he gets the job. I think you are underestimating the ability of a Athens boy with deep connections. We have been disillusioned with the program over the past several years, and have shown our discontent with our pocket books. There are plenty of deep pocketed suffering Bulldog allums that would open up with one call from McGarity. The most likely place to raise money during this recession is with the faithful old school Bulldogs that yean for a return to the class and dignity of a Joel Eaves or a Vince Dooley. Another PC appointment or unknown outsider would be business as usual for Adams, and keep the wallets zipped up most likely for good. I might be a little biased growing up in Athens, and knowing what kind of leader and stand up guy Greg McGarity is, but anyone that reads his bio can see what he brings. Maybe he was offered another job as a AD somewhere and didn’t take it, who knows? But I can assure you big money would follow him into the program. I also happen to know Steve Dennis, he’s my second pick. Born leader, stand up guy as well. He made an impression on me when he was playing here, you could tell he was destined for success when he first got to Athens. Either one would be just an outstanding choice for our program, and going broke would be the last thing I would worry about.

How can Adams say they had no indication that Evans may have an issue with this kind of thing. Wasn’t there a female employee in the athletic department who was threatening a sexual harassment suit. She’s now in Oregon employed by Nike. GEORGIA FANS YOU DESERVE BETTER AND SHOULD DEMAND BETTER! YOU NEED TO CLEAN IT UP .START WITH GOOBER PERDUE AND WORK YOUR WAY DOWN. DOES ANYONE TELL THE TRUTH UP THERE?! YOU SHOULD BE INSULTED. WHY DO YOU PUT UP WITH IT. YOU’RE SUCH A BUNCH OF LOSERS.

Michael Adams will confirm a committee recommendation that will place UGA at the level of UF’s AD. His burning desire is for the University to be indexed with UVA, UNC, UF. Forget the likes of UA, AU, UT etc, etc. I’ll bet a good tailgating meal of Maine Lobster, IA steak, ID potatoes, GA peach cobbler and Jack Daniels that whomever is selected will not be from the GA kennel. Hire someone who will demand more out of a program that is 2nd in money revenue and resides in a state that ranks 4th in recruiting
No excuses
Oh and Adams make sure they can stand on their two feet so you can worry about academics and handling those funds and not athletics
Everyone is laughing at your leadership from talk radio to news articles get with it or resign and let someone with a brain run the program.

Ah Emory Dawg
Why would you think Im not a UGA fan
Facts are facts Adams pushed out Dooley in an unfashionable manner, and I have always said what goes around comes around. He embarrassed Dooley now he is the one being embarrassed.
As for the recruiting we have had great recruits. UGA ranks 4th among NCAA schools with the most in the NFL but we have had mediocrity for too long
And dont point out the 2 SEC championships, which were great but we have to bend over and kiss FL for those because we have not beaten them to get into the Championship game
I will agree with Paul Finebaum (and I know he is pro AL) but just about any moron can look great running UGA’s athletic program with the amount of money that comes in
As for Adams, the amount of money that comes into UGA and he needs to borrow $2million now thats a joke. And it tells me he is like the overspending idiots we have in the gov. Heres a couple of tips 1. stop building parking decks and crap like an academic hall of fame. 2. Adams take a pay cut and donate the money your making to what needs to be borrowed
Been a UGA for 40 years,
facts are facts, UGA has the tools to be much better, even Bill King points that out on his radio program

How long does it take Adams to make a call to McGarity??? Answer – five seconds to dial the numbers but a year to swallow his pride.
Hey, Adams, the alumni base is 99.9% behind McGarity. He has the connections to UGA (important to everyone but you), the experience and the desire for the job. HIRE HIM.
If I had to bet, Adams is trying to find someone who will kiss his backside, do whatever he says and is from the left coast. HOW HOW HOW did we hire Adams and WHEN WHEN WHEN did we make him king of Georgia???
