ATHENS — University of Georgia President Michael Adams on Tuesday named Frank Crumley interim athletics director and appointed a search committee to seek a permanent successor to Damon Evans.

Adams said the search for a new AD could last as long as six to 12 months, and he said UGA would look first at outside candidates for the position.  In the meantime, Crumley, who had been executive associate AD for finance and administration under Evans, will oversee the athletics department.

While acknowledging the difficulty and sadness of recent days, Adams said: “We still have important work to do, and it is time for us to move on.”

He named UGA law professor and faculty athletics representative David Shipley to serve as chairman of the search committee. Also on the committee: Swann Seiler, a member of the UGA Athletic Board; Jack Bauerle, UGA’s swim coach; Tom Landrum, UGA’s senior vice president for external affairs; Carla Williams, the senior associate athletics director; and student representative Robert “Trey” Sinyard.

Shipley said that, given the academic calendar and the “caliber of candidates we’re going to be getting,” he expects the process to be protracted.

“To say we could get somebody much earlier than the New Year would be really, really optimistic,” he said.

One revelation from Tuesday’s news conference was Adams’ inclination to hire Evans’ successor from elsewhere,  although he did not rule out the possibility of Crumley or others on the current staff eventually becoming candidates.

“I think we have three or four people currently on the staff who are very, very strong people,” Adams said. “But my first look in this case is going to be outside.”

The reason, he said, is that “I want an outside opinion to take a hard look at what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. As well as we’re doing it, can we do it better?”

He said he’s seeking a person with a high level of athletics experience, although he stopped short of limiting the field to someone who is or has been a major-college athletics director.

“This is one of the five or six best AD jobs in America, in my opinion, and I can assure you there’s no shortage of interest,” Adams said.

As the search committee does its work, Crumley will be in charge.

He has worked in the Georgia athletics administration in a variety of roles since 1991 and was chief financial officer under Evans.  Georgia has one of the nation’s strongest athletics programs financially, with current cash reserves of about $60 million.  Crumley also has been responsible for day-to-day operations.

Crumley said Adams asked him Sunday if he’d step in as interim AD.

“I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Do you want to sleep on it?’” Crumley said. “I said, ‘Absolutely not. I’ll do whatever I can.’

“If anything comes up,” Crumley said, “I’ll lean on the president and the senior VPs and the Athletic Board for guidance. And other than that, we’ll chug along.”

You’re right BillS, you are indeed a waste.

Everybody is quick to criticize Suzanne Yoculan, but she would be an absolute grand slam home run. She would be so successful and there would be so many championships it would be like a Balfour ring factory. The Dawg Nation wouldn’t be able to handle so much success…

Yoculan was the most successful coach in the history of UGA, and probably the entire NCAA. Why is everyone so critical of her? She’s got a significant other. Those that criticise her are just jealous because they are not that significant other…

13 National Titles – 22 SEC Titles!!!

Well – too many people are having fun with this sad story. Evans had the world in his hands – and dropped it due to arrogance.

This is not an indictment against the U of GA. It is a story that is replayed every day – a persons becomes successful, it gets to his head – the rules do not apply – and wham – it’s humble time.

1. Let’s all pray for D. Evans family.
2. UGA is in great shape. Crumley will do a good job – the world keeps rotating.
3. For all of those fans that are taking a good swipe at UGA – be careful – your school WILL have an incident in the near future – whether it is player being arrested for something simple or major – or an administrator doing something totally our of whack – it will happen.
4. Tennessee has gone through worst – and will be better for it with D. Dooley
5. Alabama went through worst with cheating coaches that were having affairs and new coaches hanging out at strip bars in Florida. Now Alabama is on top – at least for now.
6. Things go in cycles
7. UGA is in great shape – let’s play some football

+1 to Bama Stan. This really has nothing to do with the football program or CMR. All the Tech, UT, UF fans can enjoy the obviously bizarre portions of the story (red panties), but in the end the better team will win on the field (regardless of the AD). We’ll sort all that out in the next few months, won’t we? Can’t wait for kickoff…

Evans got the quadruple kick in the a$$.

1- DUI
2- Get Fired
3- Get divorced
4- Mistress dumps him because he’s not rich AD any more

As they say, we reap what we sew – and Evans my man, you sewed your a$$ to the turf on this one buddy!

While I agree with the firing of the Damon Evans, I think it was very unprofessional of the police to put in their report about the panties. Mr. Evans was arrested because he was caught driving drunk, not for panties between his legs. Mr. Evans has humiliated his family enough, the police should not have added to that humiliation.

Michael F. Adam$ went against Vince Dooley and against UGA Admissions and gave his Presidential Admit to Tony Cole.

Micahel F. Adam$ went against Vince Dooley and against the State of Georgia anti-nepotism LAW and hired Jim Harrick, Jr.

Michael F. Adam$ went against Vince Dooley who had already narrowed his list down and deleted Jim Harrick, Sr. and hired Jim Harrick, Sr. anyway.

Michael F. Adam$ then at the Press Meeting said “How am I supposed to know what goes on in the classrooms at The University of Georgia” where his hired JH, Jr. asked questions like what is a 3-point shot worth.

AltamahaDawg, do not give me this crap that this was on Vince Dooley’s watch while he was the Athletics Director.

If Michael Adams continues his solid performance as President of UGA he’ll have his job until he voluntarily leaves. The caveat would be if Roy Barnes is elected and wants to settle some scores for Democrats. No other goobernatorial candidate would have the chutzpah to try it.

Hiring Harrick was not the problem, Harrick was not the problem. What Harrick DID was the problem. If Harrick didn’t do what Harrick did, then we got not issue, do we? I don’t think the NCAA ruled that the issue was forcing Dooley to hire him or his son. Or even that he was a snake. I believe what they had an issue with was the cheating that he did.

Who was the Athletic Director during the time that Harrick was doing what he was doing? So it is your contention that the Athletic Director has no responsibility to have a system in place that would prevent grade fixing because he wasn’t the one who hired the grade fixer. Do tell! Do you think that could happen right now? No. Why? Because we don’t allow coaches ( I dont give a damn who “hired” them) to cheat. We check on that stuff. And Wouldn’t it make sense that The AD would be even MORE diligent if he was forced to hire somebody that he wasn’t completely comfortable with? So if somebody forces you to have a snake under your direct supervision, you have no responsibilut for his actions? Ah, OK. Yea that’s how it works in real life. Do you think Dooley would agree with that? Do you think he would do it diferently now?

If really a lot more simple than all that. Whatever happens in your department is you are boss, is “on your watch”. Blame is not the issue. I didn’t blame it all on him. Of cource you never care about context.

I love how “accountability” is bantered around in here, but carefully crafted to only fit certian situations.

Was he the AD when Harrick was cheating or not?

Priorities: NASA Administrator Charles Bolden has been tasked by the administration to “engage Muslims” deeply in the space program. The former NASA Administrator criticized the policy (and Bolden’s interview with Al Jazeera) for pointing out and promoting specific cultures in the context of the U.S. space program for public relations purposes.

Hey Spencer, the police are required to put everything notable at the scene in the report. The red panties in Damon’s lap will lend credit in court to the officer’s observation that he drove erratically…don’t you think? If you are pulled over for erratic driving, and have a half eaten cheeseburger in your lap, I’m betting it makes the report as well.

“When I became the NASA administrator — or before I became the NASA administrator — he charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science … and math and engineering,” Bolden said in the interview.

EmoryDawg – Heh…yeah, we’ve got Faux News on at the moment.

I strongly, very strongly agree on the first, including flushing pseudo-science down the drain. On the second, we have no choice; the U.S. booster/crew capsule program was canceled by the current administration, leaving us with Russia and some guys like Elon Musk to get people to orbit. The third one seems to me to be a clear PR “feel good” ploy to get a large portion of the world population to choose us rather than radical Islam. I do not feel good about that one.

That is not an option when being an athletic director it is a requirement. He cannot get the job done in that respect.
