(Click here for full report on Adams’ news conference.)
ATHENS — University of Georgia President Michael Adams on Tuesday named Frank Crumley interim athletics director and appointed a search committee to seek a permanent successor to Damon Evans.
Adams said the search for a new AD could last as long as six to 12 months, and he said UGA would look first at outside candidates for the position. In the meantime, Crumley, who had been executive associate AD for finance and administration under Evans, will oversee the athletics department.
While acknowledging the difficulty and sadness of recent days, Adams said: “We still have important work to do, and it is time for us to move on.”
He named UGA law professor and faculty athletics representative David Shipley to serve as chairman of the search committee. Also on the committee: Swann Seiler, a member of the UGA Athletic Board; Jack Bauerle, UGA’s swim coach; Tom Landrum, UGA’s senior vice president for external affairs; Carla Williams, the senior associate athletics director; and student representative Robert “Trey” Sinyard.
Shipley said that, given the academic calendar and the “caliber of candidates we’re going to be getting,” he expects the process to be protracted.
“To say we could get somebody much earlier than the New Year would be really, really optimistic,” he said.
One revelation from Tuesday’s news conference was Adams’ inclination to hire Evans’ successor from elsewhere, although he did not rule out the possibility of Crumley or others on the current staff eventually becoming candidates.
“I think we have three or four people currently on the staff who are very, very strong people,” Adams said. “But my first look in this case is going to be outside.”
The reason, he said, is that “I want an outside opinion to take a hard look at what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. As well as we’re doing it, can we do it better?”
He said he’s seeking a person with a high level of athletics experience, although he stopped short of limiting the field to someone who is or has been a major-college athletics director.
“This is one of the five or six best AD jobs in America, in my opinion, and I can assure you there’s no shortage of interest,” Adams said.
As the search committee does its work, Crumley will be in charge.
He has worked in the Georgia athletics administration in a variety of roles since 1991 and was chief financial officer under Evans. Georgia has one of the nation’s strongest athletics programs financially, with current cash reserves of about $60 million. Crumley also has been responsible for day-to-day operations.
Crumley said Adams asked him Sunday if he’d step in as interim AD.
“I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Do you want to sleep on it?’” Crumley said. “I said, ‘Absolutely not. I’ll do whatever I can.’
“If anything comes up,” Crumley said, “I’ll lean on the president and the senior VPs and the Athletic Board for guidance. And other than that, we’ll chug along.”

You wonder what a successful young man like Damon could do something so stupid.
Well, I guess it’s like my Ol’ Pappy used to say: “A man has a brain and a penis, but only enough blood to operate one at the time.”

He is following a long line of similar ’successful’ young players at UGA. What a tradition.

Adams – I’ve put together a committee of highly creditable people who fit the category of people that will do the search. (yes men who follow completely by my rules)
Adams – Search committee, I need to review the 3 finialist now.
Committee – Here you go Pres., we made sure we put the ones in there that you wanted sir.
Adams – Thank you search committee, you have done a fine job. Sorry that I made you do all of this work when I had already picked out who I wanted as AD a year ago, but that would have discredited me and the University’s hiring procedures.
Committee – See, we did exactly as you said sir.

really? because mark Bradley’s opinion column is the Bible thet search commitees refer to when doing a high level administrator search?
And of cource he wants his own man. He is the boss. Wouldnt you? Or would you go after a maverick who refuses to run a department under your administration the way that you and the Board that controls and funds it wants it to be ran. A guy who wants to raise less money, maybe not improve the facilities quite so much, field worse team or hire less successful coaches?

UGA alumni, donors, and taxpaying citizens must make the removal of Adams a priority in the upcoming race for governor. Adams has made the University a national laughing stock. The trail Damon Evans and all recent scandals leads right to Adams’ $500,000 desk.

I’ve known Frank, Arthur and Carla for a long time (before they were employed by the Athletic Association). All three are smart and hard workers. None of them should be stereotyped due to Damon’s bad personal decisions. The Athletic department is in great shape and we pray that President Adams will make the right choice for AD so that we all can move forward.

Well then Bremen, I suppse we can simple rule out McGarity now, because he damn sure has shown no willingness to do what he is directed to do, despite the “to do” list making perfect sense. No way he would sit idle and be a subordinate for very long.

His only goal is for everyone to pay more money to HIM and his gang of oaken poofters so he will “allow” your child/sea monkey to gain admission to his liberal inner circle jerk.

Rick Neuheisel? Oh, my…among the worst of the worst.
“Neuheisel has been linked to several recruiting and other NCAA violations during his time at Colorado and Washington. He coached the Huskies to a victory in the 2001 Rose Bowl, but was fired from Washington in August 2003 for lying about betting on the NCAA Basketball Tournament in a bracket pool.”

It’s funny how many dawg fans think you know better than Michael Adams.
Adams is reformist, he is a tireless leader and won’t be satisfied unless achieved. That’s why he fired Vince Dooley, who had not even won a SEC champ for 20 years under his status-quo leadership.
If McGarity is Dooley protoge, you don’t want McGarity. People like those are like the big ole company administrators. The only thing they do is to maintain the status quo and get a big fat check as long as the ship is not sinking.
What’s what Dooley did for 20 years.
Seriously, how many of you UGA fans have a clue how to manage something with goals and growth?

let there be no doubt about one thing…Michael Adams runs the UGA Athletic Department….Damon will not be missed …it took Adams but a moment to handpick Crumley to step into the shoes of Evans. It should come as no surprise to any of you if Crumley is the permanent pick…it “may” be good for UGA but it “will” be good for Adams…but he needs to get it right this time….

Where are the sensational headlines publishing how much money Crumley is going to make???
While the AJC didn’t waste anytime giving us a blow-by-blow of the specifics of Damon Evans new contract terms and termination pay, where is the salary/contract info on Crumley??? I find it curious that now, there is no media interest about how much UGA is paying Crumley for his interim promotion.
Does anyone think for one minute the AJC wouldn’t be screaming at the top of their collective lungs, demanding to know the contract terms had Carla Williams been the interim promotee??

although I too question how folks on one hand call the AD just a puppet for Adam, (which is just another way of saying works for)) and on the other hand suggest McGarity is some kind of independant thinker that won’t put up with doing what the prez wants, (which I’m sure is not the opening statement in anybodies AD interview)

godoggo,
that’s the same question I’d like to ask. Most UGA fans automatically think if you are related to Dooley, you must be good.
Come on. What did Dooley do as an AD? UGA did not win SEC for 20 years, he resisted firing Jim Donnan, and Jim Harrick academic fiasco happened right under his nose. Remember Jan Kemp?
Lots of UGA dislike Damon Evans, but he is a vast improvement over Vince Dooley. There was no Jan Kemp, no Jim Harrick under Damon Evans.
