The same board that five months ago approved a new five-year, $3.25-million contract for Damon Evans will convene at 11 a.m. today to hear details of his resignation.
This morning’s meeting, via conference call, of the UGA Athletic Board’s executive committee is expected to reveal Evans’ resignation settlement and perhaps the game plan for choosing his successor as Georgia’s athletics director. I’ll be listening in on the call from the Butts-Mehre building and will post updates on Twitter (@ajcuga), so please follow me there.
Meanwhile, I keep thinking about that meeting barely five months ago -– Feb. 3 -– at which the Athletic Board expressed its enthusiastic approval of Evans’ job performance by giving him a new five-year contract and a $110,000-a-year raise.
At that meeting, UGA President Michael Adams said of Evans: “He’s already become a nationally recognized figure in athletics, and we are fortunate to have him. . . . I think he’s done an extraordinary job. . . . And there’s not been a whiff of impropriety during that six-year period. If you’re the president of an institution, that means a whole lot.”
And on that day, a grateful Evans told the board after it emerged from executive session and announced the new contract: “I’m touched deeply by it.”
In a hallway outside the meeting room a few minutes later, he told me: “We’ve got a lot left to do. I want to see us grow in so many different phases. I want to see us recognized as the elite program, and I sincerely mean that. . . . I’m fortunate. Who wouldn’t want to be the athletic director at the University of Georgia? . . . An old country guy from Gainesville, Georgia –- who would have ever thought? It is just a blessing.”
Everything was upbeat at that meeting, which also saw the board approve Evans’ recommendation to spend $21.3 million on renovating Stegeman Coliseum and creating an entry plaza behind the north stands of Sanford Stadium.
No one in attendance on the afternoon of Feb. 3 could have imagined where things would stand on the morning of July 5.
Keep up with today’s meeting: @ajcuga on Twitter.

Evans doesn’t deserve any kind of financial settlement. That’s like rewarding bad behavior. But his contract probably is written in such a way to get it. I hope the stories about Carla Williams being his successor are just idle speculation.

Who else could it be other than Williams with Adams making the choice. Nothing against Williams, she is an excellent choice with a quiet record of success, but Adams will go for her not because of her performance but for history one more time with the first female AD of the SEC. Adams does not care about sports ot UGA only getting his name in the spotlight

When is somebody going to look at Adams? I mean come on, with comments like “we are fortunate to have him. . . . I think he’s done an extraordinary job. . . . And there’s not been a whiff of impropriety during that six-year period.” Adams is asleep at the wheel or he is an exceptional con artist. Apparently, more than a few were in the know about the pattern of behavior from the philandering and imbibing AD from Athens who “didn’t want to use his influence” to shirk the law. How can you be president of a university and not have a “whiff” of this kind of behavior from your AD? This is far far from over my friends. Somebody is going to talk about a past incident that got covered up, and the bloody trail will will lead right to Adams door step. Why else would Damon be so brazen as to think he could just flash his uGa AD badge to pick up a get outta jail free card? Was Damon really the shinning star super intelligent AD of the future we were led to believe or just a shoestring puppet of an egotistical blowhard control freak university president?

Adams is a cancer. Damon should’ve never been given that job. Top 5 AD job and it’s given to a yes man that hadn’t earned it. This is the result. Hate to say it but this wasn’t the first incident. It is a sad story (for his wife and kids) but no surprise.

This should be carefully thought out. For all the stupidity shown by Evans this weekend, he has run an incredibly profitable AD over the last 7 years. We are not looking for a pretty face or a figurehead, we are looking for a businessman/woman who will have charge over a budget of over $50 million and has to have athletic sense in hiring coaches. Evans’ coaching hires can be criticized, but the finances are impeccable. Let’s not rush into something stupid just because we are embarrassed.

You guys don’t really think the uGa athletic department finances are in such good condition because of the financial wizardry of the previous AD do you? Georgia’s athletic department is in good shape only and solely due the outrageous amount of money donated to the athletic department by its’ fans. If the lawyers for Evans haven’t doubled or tripled their demands for money from the UGA Athletic Assn. they should be disbarred. This is a chance of a lifetime. This is the chance any lawyer waits a lifetime to happen. The UGAA obviously wants to settle quick. They also have an almost unlimited supply of dinero from stupid contributers who continue to support their secret, corrupt, illegal propaganda business entertainment enterprise. Evans has the physical attributes to hold them up for a long time. He could get enough money out of them to pay his great great great grandchildren. How often does their lawyer work on Sundae? After all he missed Sundae skool and the lesson on ethics, morality and conscience. His hourly rates likely doubled or tripled or more; who knows they are all sekret like all the activities of this cesspool organization.
He also likely doubles them again for working on the forth of Guly.
Mr. Evans: Get on the phone immediately to your lawyer. It is much easier to make the demand for more dinero now, than to claim duress later. Call that Harvard professor D. There have been numerous “whiffs of improprieties” during Evans’ tenure. Either Adams is too embarrassed to admit he made a foolish hire or he is too stupid to see it.
There are plenty of qualified, seasoned candidates to take over as the next UGA AD, but I’m afraid Adams will once again be more interested in finding someone he can keep under his thumb and maintain control of than finding the best person for the job.

This domination of all UGA Football by this story is old already. Speaking of football, I see where Richt is already talking out of both sides of his mouth concerning the Defense. He wants try his best to temper expectations because of first year implementation of a new scheme, while at the same time saying that we have the players to run it. This is just one of the reasons pundits are saying Richt is on the hot seat. People want to point to 2011 as a great year while saying 2010 will be improved, but not championship caliber. The problem with this thinking, for Richt anyway, is that UGA loses a lot of offensive players after this season. Murray will not have the supporting cast in 2011 that he has this year. I have seen most preseason predictions, and most would agree that UGA will probably win 10 games this year, and that’s including a bowl win. 9-3 regular season seems to be the average prediction among pundits who are not total idiots or UF biased or whatever. I know that people say that there are plenty of programs that would love a 10 game win average and all but under the circumstances it just ain’t enough at Georgia anymore. Several factors point to why UGA has not done any better at getting to the big game, but unfortunately for Richt most of them also point to him for not addressing the issues that have held UGA back. Lack of offensive line recruitment, failing to address the defensive issues(for years), and the lack of having the quarterback position shored up in crucial years, are all big reasons why UGA has not lived up to the goals the University has set for it’s football program. If UGA does not win big this year with all of the Offensive players we have in 2010, then how is it going to achieve big things in 2011 without the linemen, A.J., and the two great fullbacks that will be gone in 2011. This will be what Richt will point to in trying to temper expectations for the 2011 season, and on and on. The people who are putting the big money into the University are getting really tired of the excuses. This is why there are so many predicting hot seat for Richt. There are just not that many seasons left for him to keep trying to point ahead to. Richt needs to know the importance of getting to Atlanta this year, but it seems that he continues to “Dream” of years to come.

To ALTER,
As an African American, I have to DISAGREE with you! The University of Georgia had to fire Evans wheter it was a black, white or even purple woman in his car. Race has nothing to do with this. He made a STUPID decision that cost him his job! Futhermore, all respect for him has been lost. You’ve seen the mug shot? Read the Police Report: Crying, red panties, throwing his title around. After reading the report, I think he is really lucky they are allowing him to resign and giving him a settlement.
The University had to distance itself from this situation.
As an administrator in the field of education I totally understand the rationale behind this move. As AD, how would Evans ever again be able to issue consequences to athletes breaking the drinking policies at UGA?
This is very simple, if you break the law you must be ready to face any and all possible outcomes.

There was a time when one could gain admission to UGA with a fishing license. Then Adams came along. Now one needs top academic credentials gain admission to UGA. Adams has built UGA into one of the top universities in the southeast. Academically UGA used to be in the back row of the SEC. Now UGA sits in the front row.
But if the only important thing in your life is how the UGA football team is doing, then……………………………….

It’s a sad story all around for those of us who love UGA. Sad for Evans, a former player given his dream job and performing it well, sad for Ms. Evans and their kids, sad for current players and coaches who have been let down, sad for all the fans who hate seeing the University dragged through the mud again. I hurt for all of them, and hope Mr. Evans can focus on mending both ways and fences. I hope he can find a meaningful job in a quieter location that will not blind him with the white hot lights of a premier program. I hope that Ms. Evans can sleep through the night when her husband’s not home. But most of all, I hope that the students see that actions mean much more than words, and that poor choices have consequences, not only for themselves, but for everyone who loves them. Best wishes to all.

Have you not come to realize that those people who always make everything about race, lack the intelligence to make legitimate points about the subject matter? Race is their default position/argument.
Just peruse any blog on any subject and you will find people who make it about race. If the AJC had a story discussing the ‘Theory of Relativity’, you can bet $100.00, someone would play the race card.

The real irony is Evans replaced Vince Dooley after civil war ,all over the state, broke out. Adams wanted Dooley gone and hired a water boy to take his place. You can’t hire someone pay him this kind of money and then expect to still run the show. You got to have someone Adam’s can delegate responsibility to. It was unfair to Damon Evans and it is unfair to Georgia, to have hired Evans at such a young age, but after a hard headed Dooley I am sure it served Adams’ purpose. If your AD has character problems what else have you missed in you athletic department. I have said quiet often the only thing stopping the Georgia football team is their immaturity. The defense was the most penalized team in the SEC last year. Constantly playing out of position to make the big hit to please a bunch of drunks in the crowd up in Athens. Adams’ has one thing right this state deserves a better state university. Changing Georgia from the backwoods school it is to a nationally respected University, which our state desperately needs, is a task few man could handle. But one leads to the other. Until this state starts taking the future of its kids above throwing a drunk on Saturday in Athens we will always have this stuff going on.

In 2007, Adams worked to establish the Eugene P. Odum School of Ecology on the University’s Athens campus, stating “The creation of the School of Ecology is a historic commitment by the university to this essential field of study. Environmental issues are key as we think about economic success and sustainability for our children and grandchildren.” Unfortunately during the same year, the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL), a 50+ year UGA institution originally founded by Dr. Odum and located on the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site was significantly downsized due to reduced funding from DOE. Despite widespread public and political support for SREL, including letters from the four Republican GA/SC senators, SREL was forced to consider closing its doors. However, funding from a diversity of other sources was able to keep the lab open, but with substantial loss of budget and personnel.

TO collegeballfan: Adams had as much to do with raising the academic standard at the university as HOPE did. Once the parents of all these smart kids realized that it made economic sense to go to Athens rather than out-of-state it became harder to get in.
TO Steve: What Adams hates Dooley. Vince was and still is far more popular in the Bulldawg Nation than Adams ever will be. Pure envy and ego. Dooley not an Adams fan because he forced him to retire before he was ready.
Time to move on. Williams or McGarity, either would be great. Williams would be the PC choice but she is too close to the situation to take charge. McGarity has been away from Athens since 92 and will bring a fresh new vision and a wealth of experience. We need that experience and maturity. Don’t worry Michael, bring in McGarity and maybe you can still be president, eventhough very few want you!

A sad day in the DAWG house. But, this too will pass.
There is a lesson here. Those in positions of great responsibility are held to a higher standard. Damon Evans either never learned that or forgot it. But this is a lesson for all…take the big job, draw the big bucks, MOVE INTO A GLASS HOUSE.
Let’s hope that President Adams can put aside his personal agenda and bring in the best AD available.

Boy, he’s a “…nationally recognized figure in athletics…” alright. I really hate this for Evans, he made a good hire in Fox and pressured CMR to let Martinez go (wish he’d gone a little farther and moved Bobo back to QB Coach), but hopefully he will bounce back and get his life on track. Speaking from experience, he CAN do that.
DAWG Colonel, the last part of that lesson is unfortunately, ………and get a settlement for resigning for breaking a pledge you made in your contract. I just don’t get that. You either broke your contract or you didn’t. If you did, you should get your last paycheck earned, nothing more.
I also agree with you DAWG Colonel, that we get the best, not Adam’s favorite.

If Georgia wanted to fight it out in court, I doubt Evans would get a nickel. Most contracts have a “morality clause” in them that allows for firing based on behavior. But it’s real hard (and real messy) to fire for cause, and that would involve dragging it out and creating a lot MORE bad publicity for both Damon and the university. So it’s probably best for all concerned that they agree to a settlement.
Sad. I wasn’t real pleased with his selection as AD originally, but I think he’s done a pretty good job.

Heck, we wouldn’t even rate in the top four for just the state of NC, much less when compared to the rest of the country. Voice, no a blithering idiot doesn’t know that huge revenues and profits are far from the same thing. Managing expences while still undertaking massive capital improvements takes a lot of disclipline and planning. If any idiot could manage captive income, then the Fed govenment wouldn’t be in such bad shape. Of cource since Evans was such a puppet, we need to give Adams all the credit for everything built, bought, or done recently I suppose. As far the outrageous amount of money donated every year, haven’t you heard? Everybody is going to withhold thiers till Adams is fired. I guess those donation card were already prefilled for the past 7 yrs, but boy when that does kick in, ouch!

As far as all the comments about Mark Richt. Some of the people who post here will never be satisifid with any coach. You were tired of Dolley, Goff was a joke (that was correct) Donnan was arrogant, etyc. Mark Richt is human, and he has learedn from waiting too long to change the DC, but he is a fine man, he will never bring dishonor and shame to UGA and parents want their kids to play for him. he is a proven winner and he will continue to be becasue he is a man of his word with high moral and ethicsal character.

Sorry but I guess I have been lucky in my life that I have never been pulled over for DUI and unlucky that I don’t get to drive around with a 26 yr old with no underwear on. There are not too many in this country that have been behind the wheel when they should have not been. But if I did why would I get a settlement to leave a job and not just get fired? Who can not say that the south has come a long way when a married black guy gets pulled over drunk with a young white girl and they pay him to leave him dream job. “I Have a Dream!”

I truly do hope he gets his life back in order. After all, he’ll get paid for several years work he’ll never do. Unfortunately, his wife and children will probably get the bulk of it.
And just as unfortunate, this didn’t help the cause of many quality black coaches and administrators who seek and deserve promotions. Another reason for the quick settlement and desire to put this episode as far back in the rearview mirror as possible.

Winfield J. Abbe, what drugs are you taking? Your incoherent, repetitive, rambling post encourages Damon Evans to sue Georgia…for what? Because Mr. Evans got drunk and went driving around Atlanta with a chick who was not his wife? Because the University had to sever ties with a person who had brought shame on his employer, his wife and his children through his own poor judgement? Sorry, Mr. Abbe, but this incident is Mr. Evans’ fault, and his alone. I’m sick of people trying to somehow twist their own indiscretions into a scenario in which they somehow morph into becoming a victim.
From the context of your post, I would think that you were a plaintiff’s attorney–except they generally have a better command of the English language than you do.

You can get pulled over for a DUI in GA – w/ a whitewan. then she is talking sh*t saying – “Do you know who he is??? He’s the Atletic Director….blah, blah, blah….He’ll have this tossed out tomorrow” She’s outta control and talking wayyyy too much.
And then to add gasoline to the fire — YOU ARE SITTING THERE WITH HER PANTIES in YOUR LAP – talking about – “I was just holding them….”
I haven’t even talkied about him trying to “influence the officer”, if it had been a white guy..the cop would have given him some slack – maybe (maybe not in these revenue raising days!)

heeldawg — There is a thing called a “morals clause” in you employment contract, that is the catch all for all this bad behavior.
As a regular hourly associate on your job, you don’t have one of these. Most salaried positions do not require a employment contract either until you start making around $100k.
This is why they can “let you resign” for behavior unbecoming or shedding an ill light on the University.
Same kind clause that the NFL has the NBA has but does not use it “apparently”.
