Evans’ settlement: 3 months salary plus previously earned $100,000 bonus

(Updated 12:20 p.m.)

ATHENS -–The UGA Athletic Association board of directors’ executive committee this morning approved a settlement that will pay departing athletics director Damon Evans three months salary as severance, plus a $100,000 longevity bonus earned under his previous contract.

UGA President Michael Adams told the board that Evans submitted his resignation, “which I have accepted,” on Sunday.

The meeting, by teleconference, lasted about 15 minutes, most of that in executive — closed — session.

“As I said on Thursday morning, when I first learned of the situation, this is not an example of the kind of leadership that I expect our senior administrators to set,” Adams told the committee.

“We acknowledge the many positive accomplishments of [Evans'] tenure, including an increased focus on the academic success of student-athletes, the overall financial strength of the athletic department and the hiring of many very good people as head coaches and senior leaders in the athletic department.”

Adams said he would not answer questions from the media about the matter and the future leadership of the athletics department until a 2 p.m. news conference on Tuesday.

According to the separation agreement signed by Evans and Adams on Sunday, the Athletic Association agreed to continue to pay Evans his salary for the next three months, totaling about $137,500. In addition, he is to be paid a $100,000 longevity bonus called for in his previous contract on Aug. 1.

In the agreement, Evans “releases and forever discharges” the university, the Athletic Association and the state “from any and all claims.” He also agreed to a confidentiality provision regarding “all matters leading up to this Release Agreement,” and both parties — Evans and UGA — agreed to make “no statements . . . which are disparaging, critical or negative toward each other or any of their agents, employees or students.”

The agreement also stipulates that Evans “will receive a reference mutually agreed-to by the President of the University and Evans.”

The former AD must return all athletic association property, including the two cars he was allowed to use, to University council Ed Tolley before noon Tuesday July 6th. Neither Evans nor Adams are allowed to make statements, “written or oral, express or implied, which are disparaging, critical or negative toward (each) other or any of their agents, employees or students.”

yes, i am out of this thread for good; because, like all of these ajc threads, they are taken over by people who don’t reason and have no real interest in the subject. i went to uga, graduated cum laude, went to all the games, played in the redcoat band when it was the ‘dixie redcoat band.’ sat through games when only 17000 showed up; in a stadium that sat no more than it did in 1929 — if any of you new fools remember any tradition at all. i sat through three seasons of 3-6; no bowls. remember and still love dean tate. saw adolph rupp beat uga in old woodruff hall, played in the band at the opening of the ’stegasaurus,’ which was a wonder of the world at its time. witnessed vince dooley’s first season and the wonder of the win over tech and the even greater honor of a bid to the sun bowl. and on, and on, and on. so stop dishing georgia, you idiots. i’m outta here.

When Vince Dooley became head coach for Ga he changed the G logo from the block G to the G we have today. Green Bay wanted to change thier G and had to get permission from UGA!

I am glad Evans resigned and we didnt have to pay him the $2million plus!

Guys,

The lesson to be learned from this episode of ‘Who’s da hoe’ is this…Make darn sure the beeotch
1. keeps her panties on,
2. puts the panties in her purse when she takes them off, or
3. rendezvous at your favorite meeting place without the panties altogether.

Don’t they teach you frat boys anything at State U?

If Damon and his wife have to return their beemers to Uga, how are they supposed to get around? They need expensive rides for their lifestyle and will not be seen in any low class ride like a honda accord or ford focus.

AD SF Who do you think will buy her book? Who do you think around the country knows who Damon Evans is? What TV show would get any ratings boost by having that woman on? Outside of Georgia nobody cares what she has to say. Some SEC and UGA haters might listen to a few of her comments, but not a TV show or Book. The Hustler layout is probably closer to the truth, but that is a one time pay and not that much money. Again She at a big Nationally. Her ability to do her JOB in the state of Georgia has been hurt for sure.

I think the university did the right thing & letting damon go, however adam’s pre-historic ass need to go as well. Damon made a huge mistake, taking another woman out who he claim was his friend & only knew the woman for 2 weeks. There is no way I would take my panties off in my friends car, drunk or not & he’s holding them for me. Please how stupid of him to make such a dumb comment. Also for the uncle that brag about his nephew @ church, now brag on this.

I think he should have gotten caught! You don’t do wrong and not get what’s coming to you! I think he looks shady anyway and I DON’T think he should have been paid anything. He was misleading the whole UGA campus. I bet those red panties aren’t so important to him now or the home wrecker that wore them!

DaHood,

You make some good points and then go into a hate filled, racist diatribe of your own with your comments about redneck trailer trash. Sadly you negated your good comments with your hate filled comments.

I think we can all agree Damon did a good job as AD. However, looking back on when he got the job several years ago his resume was paper thin and no one disputes this. There were certainly many white men with far greater credentials as candidates for the job. But do I have a problem with Damon getting the job to begin with over them? Absolutely not. Why? Because one can always make an argument that there is someone more qualified of a different race.

Damon was selected because he was a Georgia man, Vince handpicked him and had confidence in him, and he seemed particularly bright which can compensate greatly for a resume that may be lacking. In any event fair or not the man had personal connections to important people at UGA and race really doesn’t matter in many cases. Its who you know that matters and black or white in this case it was who Damon knew that got him in. Not affirmative action and not his resume. A lot of people both black and white seem to forget this and that most jobs are landed through one’s network and not through a newspaper ad or blind application.

I wonder if Evans ever read anything from one of the best athletic people around, who would be John Wooden. He obviously never read the Pyramid of Success. Or if he did, he didn’t make it to the second level. The first block on the second level of the pyramid is Self-Control and reads “Control of your organization begins with control of yourself. Be disciplined.” Arthur Laffer (economists in the Reagan administration) said recently the decisions made when someone is in a panic or drunk will almost always have negative consequences. True…true!!

Adams and UGa should immediately hire another minority to replace evans, since UGA is poorly represented on campus with very few minorities in high profile positions and on the faculty.

da hood, race has not been an issue for me during this whole debacle or even with his hiring. I was leery that he was too young and inexperienced and I guess that has proven true by these actions, but I actually thought he was smarter than this but it isn’t the first time a guy let the little head do the thinking. On one thing we can agree however and this is because I am appreciative of the sight of a beautiful woman, period. His wife is much, actually very much better looking than his “friend”.

I don’t want a less qualified doctor working on my deathly ill child. Unfortunately due to affirmative action, I look at people of color in a different light. Are they really qualified to do the job or just “color-qualified.”

Evans, who DID not graduate originally from UGA (Terry Business College) makes me suspect at the least with the “THIN RESUME” and job he was sent to ultimately fail in.

P.S…..I was in Tampa this weekend…and being there made me proud by the communities response to a horrible tragedy…for two white cops were murdered in cold blood by a black man…and the white community did not come out in “hate” for the black race for the act of one evil man…no…the community of both blacks and whites came together to defeat evil…and hate. And the African-American community was mostly wonderful in its condemnation of the killer and support for the murdered cops family and the entire Tampa community as a whole. And I was exceptionally proud of the Tampa police force…that exhibited pure professionalism and emotional control in a time of immense pain and emotion. Mind controlling emotion….the way it should be. Maybe we are making progress still….at least in Tampa, Florida, they are still….

He should be fired for pure idiocy alone. I mean really? How dumb can this man be? And how dumb can you be to tell the cop he’s just holding her panties for her? And how dumb can you be when you say in a press conference the next day when you are sober that she was just a “friend” with a straight face? What manner of an idiot is this man?

I didn’t give all the information on the Laffer quote. His statement was made in reference to the economic policy and actions that have come out of Washington, DC in the last 3 years. Which, have been made in a panic and have had no positive outcomes. He wasn’t trying to be a psychologists, just making a statement based on, what I feel, is logical thought. Logical thought is something a lot of highly paid, powerful folks in the country have forgotten or never knew how to do. Tampa that is the DIFF between White and Black in GA where we have had Black culture force-feed to us and both Black and White in Ga are just sick of it. I wish it was different, but blacks blame white for everything that is wrong in their lives and whites blame blacks for not doing anything better than being lazy and robbing people. Our 2 communities in Ga. rarely come together on many issues. It does happen but the actions that bring us together never seem to get the attention that the Dividing Issues do.

Wish it was different, but I just don’t see much of it changing.

Half of you yo yo’s don’t even know the guy’s name. It is Damon Evans. Not David Evans or the other incorrect names used. Evans did wrong and deserves punishment including being let go. But, he erred in my opinion by letting UGA off so easy. I really believe they would have paid him $500,000 to $1,000,000 to leave versus the $237,500 or so he got. Just saying.
