Evans’ settlement: 3 months salary plus previously earned $100,000 bonus

(Updated 12:20 p.m.)

ATHENS -–The UGA Athletic Association board of directors’ executive committee this morning approved a settlement that will pay departing athletics director Damon Evans three months salary as severance, plus a $100,000 longevity bonus earned under his previous contract.

UGA President Michael Adams told the board that Evans submitted his resignation, “which I have accepted,” on Sunday.

The meeting, by teleconference, lasted about 15 minutes, most of that in executive — closed — session.

“As I said on Thursday morning, when I first learned of the situation, this is not an example of the kind of leadership that I expect our senior administrators to set,” Adams told the committee.

“We acknowledge the many positive accomplishments of [Evans'] tenure, including an increased focus on the academic success of student-athletes, the overall financial strength of the athletic department and the hiring of many very good people as head coaches and senior leaders in the athletic department.”

Adams said he would not answer questions from the media about the matter and the future leadership of the athletics department until a 2 p.m. news conference on Tuesday.

According to the separation agreement signed by Evans and Adams on Sunday, the Athletic Association agreed to continue to pay Evans his salary for the next three months, totaling about $137,500. In addition, he is to be paid a $100,000 longevity bonus called for in his previous contract on Aug. 1.

In the agreement, Evans “releases and forever discharges” the university, the Athletic Association and the state “from any and all claims.” He also agreed to a confidentiality provision regarding “all matters leading up to this Release Agreement,” and both parties — Evans and UGA — agreed to make “no statements . . . which are disparaging, critical or negative toward each other or any of their agents, employees or students.”

The agreement also stipulates that Evans “will receive a reference mutually agreed-to by the President of the University and Evans.”

If you reflect on your own disappointment you perhaps could be kinder. But if you are untarnished right now, just wait a little while for your misfortune and unintended consequence, causing the stones to bash your head in. And remember these boulders you cased now. My hope is that you take your misfortune with as much ease as it is for you to case the stones of condemnation. Everything is familiar and short lived. This will SOON be forgotten and the next stone thrown could be thrown at you. Don’t duck take like you dish it. Be proud. It is coming each of us sometimes from carelessness or unintended.

Tech fans love to imply that UGA has some wide-spread integrity issues. Our guys must be going to class and doing the work as the UGA athletic group outscored the weenies in recent academic qualification ratings.

Hello, Mr. Potato Head. Knock knock, anybody home? The academic requirements at Tech are so much higher than they are at The Cesspool of the South that there’s no comparison, even 25 years after Jan Kemp exposed UGA.

And would you like to talk about the arrest records of UGA thugs, both the players AND the employees in the athletic department?

Some advice: don’t bother going to your mailbox to look for your unemployment check today. It’s a holiday for the post office. :-) :-) :-)

Does Damon get to keep his expensive BMW that UGa was paying for? He’ll demand that as part of his severance. A man of his profile needs a top flight ride.

Ok let me get this, I am slow.
You meet some chick in a bar you dont know. you Both get smashed drunk. You ORDER her to Hand over her Panties, Red by the way(same as Red Flag but we wont get symbolic). you place her panties between your legs. This will some how another Keep her confined to the car so you can Make sure she gets home. When you take her home, you immediately give her back her panties and you say good night and she says drive safely. You go home kiss your wife she smells a lil alcohol, you tell her you stopped off at a local pub, ran into a woman you met about a week ago. took her panties from her because she was drunk and you wanted to make sure she got home safe..and your wife listens intently pauses for a second in deep concentration, smiles kiss you and says ” we have to do something about your Sleep walking!” I will bet Damon wishes this all was a Bad Dream..my question is what on earth do he tell his wife? How do you explain..well honey I just told her to remove her panties and I would hold them for her..so she can get home safely..Again I am Lost, slow..hmmm I wonder if this guy plays golf occassionly, if he does, Hope there are no golf clubs laying around.

again, i say, time to move on. time to put up the flags again. time to reembrace uga as alma mater. this stupid man can’t take down the tradition and the future of georgia — and neither can michael adams. georgia lives on beyond all of us, and we as alumni are known by its life and excellence. and so are our families, and so the good people of this state. thanks be that the ‘pompous’ president at least had the good sense to solve this quickly and with as little pain as possible. now, let the games begin! who replaces this evil little man is not nearly as important as the fact that he is gone.

Some of you may remember MLK saying: you should not judge on the color of a man’s skin, but the content of his character…well..he got the job due to the color of his skin…but did not keep it due to the content of his character…maybe you, OJ and Tiger can get together and discuss how ‘the man’ has held you down…LOL..good ridance…just sorry they gave you 3 months pay and 100 grand…they should have given you nothing but your walking papers and taken that BMW 750 pimp mobile back too…maybe you can sell those red panties on e-bay…LOL

This is indeed a sad story; however, let me explain who it is sad for. It is sad for Evans’ wife and daughters, who must deal with the ramifications of their dad’s “DOG” gone wild for many more years to come. I am sad for Bulldog Nation and the thousands of fans who accepted Evans and were very supportive of the job he was doing. I am sorry for my African American community. Over the last few years, we’ve seen the likes of McNair, Tiger, and now Evans, all share something so morally and irresponsibly incomprehensible: An inability (and arrogant unwillingness) to separate right from wrong. Unfortunately, it cost McNair his life; it will ultimately cost Tiger millions of dollars; and it has now cost Evans a lucrative job and most likely a wonderful and supportive wife. Say what you will, but too often we make excuses for this type of behavior, just as Evans did that night. I will not do that. It is an insult to all of us. YES, Evans must go. As when I myself was an impressionable young college students, we looked for those in leadership positions to serve as an example of what “NOT” to do. Nobody expected Evans to be perfect, but we did expect him to heed his own words: “You drink and drive, you lose!” Well, that makes him a loser. Thank God that he only killed his career and family that night, and no innocent drivers on the road. As a happily married mother, I will not blame the young lady with the red panties. She too fell prey to the appeal of an older well-paid guy with “clout” in the community. They will both pay dearly for their decisions that night, but let us not forget that she is not obligated to a spouse or university. And that is why Evans is the biggest loser! So long, to another young, promising brother who has disappointed us all.

please, please don’t bring race into this! let’s not go down that old, tired road. it demeans everybody, especially those in the uga community, real alumni, who seek fairness and dignity for their alma mater. please, leave it out, because it is not an issue. the issue is a sad one, almost a classic tragedy: a person with everything and so much to live for tosses it all away. some people are threatened by success, you know. the tragedy here is not uga or damon evans; it is his wife, and kids, and the minds of the young who will be damaged by this. and for those who would make fun and wave red panties? grow up.

Too bad he could not handle his great success with style and class instead of booze and trash. I guess its character that makes a man great and lack of same that makes a potentially great man a fool. It would be refreshing to hear one of these guys describe their lack of character as such and not each of these failures and lack of judgment as a “mistake”. Also, UGA has a long way to go in recruiting young men with character. All that being said, I hope Damon will be able to recover and move on with character he surely has lacked until now.

“I accepted his resignation” – what a lie! He did not want to resign! Same as last week with McChrystal. What a bunch of garbage in corporate America! We all have gone through that. “I really do not want to resign, sir”. “Well, the decision HAS BEEN ALREADY MADE”.
Meaning: “We fire you, but to the public we will just say that you resigned. For that, you will get your little bonus $$, and we all look good.” I am not defending him at all, (he got what he deserved), but my point is the lie to all of us. Does not matter it comes from UGA, or the prez.

The racist were so sure that Rev Al and Jesse Jackson were coming in to save Damon’s lame ass. They were told repeatedly this would not happen. Now they are insistent that Damon was an Affirmative Action hire even though Dooley hand picked him and groomed him for the job. Damon had the appropriate educational credentials from UGA. Now whether or not the credentials are worth anything is another story. I dislike Damon Evans for what he did to his Nubian bride and children but he was responsible for a lot of good things in the athletic department. But I am sure the ignorant redneck trailer park racist that didn’t finish 7th grade portion of the UGA fanbase can’t understand that as it would actually require them to read and make a knowledge based comment.

I think the thing that strikes me the most is how easily you can lose your job by doing something stupid in your personal life. It’s unfortunate that he worked for a college where we are supposed to be teaching our young people good morals as well as teaching them to use their full potential in life. But somewhere in the back of his head, he should have known that he did not work for an accounting firm or a law firm or some other private company where an episode like this probably wouldn’t cost you your job (much less end up in the news). It’s just sad that he let his idiot side come out the way it did.

Look people, at this level even in the “real” business world execs get lovely departing gifts except most of theirs include stock options and other amenities. Don’t begrudge his wife and kids the 3 months & bonus already earned because if she and her lawyer are smart they will be the ones getting it anyway. Besides that I’m sure there were strings attached to the severance deal as well. Expect him to plead guilty or nolo and get out of town as quietly as possible.

Failure…..and the need for “religion” tend to go hand ‘n hand…so I guess it is time for Mr. Evans to get “saved” by some right-wing evangelist on go on the speaking tour in all the churches around America telling how Jesus made a difference in his life…and everyone can feel better about him….and he can make tons of money. I tend to follow “spiritual” people like Bonhoffer (sp?), who was successful in mind, body, and spirit…..and therefore exhibited character in the face of true evil (Hitler) and paid the untimate price for that true character and true faith. He was not one of those modern day “Christians” that “prey” on people’s weaknesses (ever wonder why preachers and evangelists focus so much on human failure and weakness???…because focusing on “failure” brings out easily uncontrolled emotion, not controlled spirt or mind, and makes people easy prey.) Well, I guess I made the right wing religious on here angry again….and I am glad. It is easy to prey on the right wing….because those who follow someone else’s thinking blindly, instead of thinking clearly for themselves based on knowlege-based learning, are the easiest to rile to revolt….ask Hitler!!! Well…I guess it is time for a TEA PARTY! Or is it a facist party in development? Too bad Hitler isn’t here to lead the revolt. Oh, I forgot…this is a sports blog. SORRY!
