Bulldogs No. 64? ‘Just plain ridiculous’ ranking draws rebuttals

Thought you might get a kick out of reading a couple of rebuttals to the Orlando Sentinel’s ranking of Georgia’s football team as No. 64.

First, from Barrett Sallee of CollegeFootballNews.com:

A blog post in the Orlando Sentinel got the Georgia Bulldog fan base up in arms Tuesday –- and rightfully so.

In their College Football 2010 Countdown, the newspaper ranked the Georgia Bulldogs No. 64 … one spot behind Ole Miss and two spots behind Mississippi State. That puts them among the 25 worst BCS teams in the country.

Georgia is a bit of a mystery this season. They are breaking in a new quarterback, installing a new defensive scheme and replacing six starters on a defense that was dreadful last season. But ranking them at No. 64 is just plain ridiculous. A favorable schedule and an above average running game will get the Bulldogs into the top half of the SEC in 2010, which is a far cry from No. 64.

It’s a Florida-based paper, so the rivalry between Florida and Georgia probably plays into the low ranking a bit. But come on … if you’re going to poke the rival, at least make it believable.

And from Hays Carlyon of the Florida Times-Union:

Luckily for Georgia, the Bulldogs don’t compete in the SEC West.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, they’d finish dead last this coming season.

One of the most respected sports departments in our state has unveiled a bold (comical?) prediction.

In its countdown of ranking all 120 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision teams, the Georgia Bulldogs are the 64th-best team in the country heading into the season. That clicking sound you hear is Mark Richt frantically stapling the printout to any bulletin board he can find on campus. Word is he wallpapered the team’s locker room with it.

Now, we all like to make bold predictions, and no one knows for sure how any team’s season will play out. But Georgia 64th? Really?

There are only three SEC teams the Sentinel thinks will be worse than the Bulldogs (Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Kentucky).

To twist the insult knife further, according to the Sentinel, Georgia would be the ACC’s seventh-best team in its rankings. Uga VI is rolling over in his grave.

To rank that low, Georgia would almost have to be a 6-6 team. . . .

To me, it’s more likely Georgia goes 10-2 over 6-6. But that’s the only beauty of the preseason. No matter how wild the prediction, nobody is wrong yet.

Except the Sentinel.

Just 66 more days of silliness, by the way, until the season opener in Sanford Stadium.

UGAY isn’t good. They do have a pathetic schedule but they will still lose to teams like Kentucky. No QB,no running game, no Defense….All this equals a bad team. Quit drinking the koolade and realize UGAY is horrible!

Why are you worried about Georgia in comparasion to the two Mississippi schools. State and Ole Miss will be better than your little puppies from Athens this year. It’s just a matter of time until the Cowbells will be ringing on your heads in Starkville this fall.

With an offensive line two deep and a treasure trove of running backs we will be in the top 10. All we need is a quarterback who can hand the ball off without fumbling. And I think Murray is capable of that. Defense will be better. I like our team alot.

“Most experienced” teams: Boise State returns 21 of 22 on the depth charts for both offense and defense, plus the PK/punter. Last year they were the highest-scoring team in the country. They allowed 31 rushing yards in the win over Oregon. Let’s see how that works out against Virginia Tech in the opener this year.

Richt coached for FSU 1990-2000, finished in the top 5 final rankings, every year. Offense ranked top 5 in country under Richt. Since Richt left, no top 10 rankings for FSU in final polls since.

Richt finished in top 10 final rankings 6 out of 9 seasons at Georgia, 4 top 10 finishes in a row, which Saban or Meyer have never done.

So, what’s that 16 out of 19 seasons, top 5 or top 10 final ranking?

J….try another sport. Football does not click for you. Or if you must, root for Arkansas, they are very simple to follow and have a simpleton coach. Petrino is a mile wide and an inch deep. He is “mensa” material in Arkansas. Well, you get the picture.

From what I saw at the G-Day game this spring I would say the 64 ranking is about right. Our offensive line was horrible and our running game suffered against a revamped defense that wasn’t even playing all of their sets. We looked horrid and I am scared to death of what’s going to happen in Columbia. But if you look at our G-Day game tape then yes we should be ranked no higher than 64.

Until we beat fl, no one (under the age of 40) in Florida will ever have any respect for UGA. Let’s just make sure we are playing in the Dome for the SECCG and let the writers and the ratings take care of themselves. I don’t dare if we go 2-10 as long as we beat fl and gt.

If wishing only made things so..the Gators would lose every game except when they play Bama for the next 20 years…but here in the real world..UGA won’t be 64th or lower..its like saying I don’t like the Gators but CUM and all that talent won’t win any games because I don’t like them. Please how many areas will UGA be worse in this year compared to last year..really? And Bully 11 what exactly are you smoking? In the last 30 years exactly how many times have the 2 MS schools been better than UGA the same year?

People think Georgia isn’t top 10 for 2 reasons:
1) QB Play
2) New defense

QB Play for 2nd Year QB Aaron Murray:
On QB play, Mark Richt’s record with 2nd year QB’s Stafford & Greene were both around 57% accuracy, 19 td’s, 10 int’s. Murray comes in as the #2 ranked QB in the country out of High School, had over 50 scholarship offers. Threw for 4000 yards, ran for 900, 54 TD’s. State championship against toughest level competition, Elite 11 Camp MVP.

On new defense:
Grantham has a track record of INSTANT TURNAROUND results. Took Colts from 3-13 to 13-3 in 1st year, and Browns from 4-10 to 10-6 in 1st year. Belin’s LB’s at Vandy consistently All-SEC, Lakatos secondary consistently top 10 in pass efficiency. Colts, Browns, and Dallas Cowboys all had their BEST YEAR in last 15 years, when Grantham was on staff. Saban offered Grantham his DC position 2x at Mich St., and at Miami.

Good thing for these guys that their jobs don’t depend on being accurate in their crystal-ballin’. Fact is all they need to do is to ‘get the fight started’ and they’ve done their job – so far as their bosses are concerned.

Fact is, and as it’s been mentioned, until we turn this thing around with Florida nobody down that way will give Georgia the benefit of the doubt on anything. This season will rely on young Mr. Murray’s ability to keep a steady hand on the tiller, but more importantly, our success will be based on how the defense responds. If we’re weak – and I mean glaringly so – against either the run or the pass, then we very well could be ‘bringing up the rear’ by season’s end.

Head Coaches Turnaround Experience/Track Record?
Richt’s had 2, 4 loss seasons in SEC in 2001 & 2006. Both times, Richt ended up in top 3 in final polls the next season, both in 2002 & 2007.
