Inside linebackers: Sorting out the ‘Mike’ and the ‘Mo’

(Seventh in a summertime series looking at Georgia’s football team by position.)

TODAY: INSIDE LINEBACKERS

  • Returning starter: Akeem Dent started the final four games last season after being sidelined for five games earlier in the season with a pulled hamstring. He started 10 games in 2008 and five in 2007. He had a career-high 11 tackles in last season’s win at Georgia Tech.
  • Others to watch: There are two inside-linebacker positions — the “Mike” and the “Mo” positions — in Georgia’s new 3-4 defense, and all of the inside linebackers worked at both spots during spring practice. On the latest depth chart, Dent, a senior, is No. 1 at “Mike” and Christian Robinson, a redshirt sophomore who appeared in 12 games (no starts) last season, No. 1 at “Mo.”  Sophomore Mike Gilliard and junior Marcus Dowtin are listed as the No. 2’s behind Dent and Robinson, respectively. Dowtin finished last season with a career-high nine tackles in the Independence Bowl victory over Texas A&M. His competition with Robinson for the starting job at “Mo” will be interesting to watch in preseason.
  • Key fact: Other than Dent, the only current  ILB with starting experience is Dowtin, who started four games last season — two early and two late. (And what, you might ask, about Darryl Gamble, who started 17 games the past two seasons? After working most of the spring at inside linebacker, he was shifted to outside linebacker, and the current plan is for him to remain there. We’ll get to the OLB’s tomorrow.)
  • Key question: How quickly and how well will the players adapt to the new defensive scheme and the teachings of new ILB coach Warren Belin, who had a good reputation for developing linebackers at Vanderbilt?
  • Recent developments: After starting the spring at outside linebacker,  former tailback Richard Samuel was quickly moved to inside linebacker, where he currently is listed as a third-teamer (as is senior Akeem Hebron).  There’s a possibility of Samuel, a junior, being redshirted, but that depends on how he progresses in preseason practice.
  • Outlook: Uncertain and uneasy.
  • Your turn: What say you about the inside linebackers?

Josh Nesbitt and the high powered Tech offensive machine will cut through your defense like a hot knife through butter! Your team is a joke! Great players, no production.

I feel sure that the linebackers will be ready this fall. Lots of talent and experience. We should be tough against he run if the D-Line steps up after losing three seniors to the NFL.

You don’t have a new UGA because nobody wants the job. Kind of like your D coordinator position….. You will probably end up settling on a lesser beast, like you did Grantham.

Is there a tech blog you can visit Nerd or is the tech news to depressing. Get a life and talk smack when you win a few games against your rival. Last year was just a warm up this year will be a true beating. ACC champ give me a break.

as long as they can learn their roles in the new scheme, these guys will be alright. sure, there will be a hiccup or two, but in the end, we have some leadership and the new guys will fill in fine.

Dowtin looked great against A&M. what makes him a back-up at Mike instead of a starter at Mo?

Mike and Mo with Curly playing Nose guard? Sounds like the 3 stooges are getting ready to play some football. Samuel redshirting? I don’t think that will happen. He should have transfered to Ga. State as a Running Back.

Love the fact any fan of any of our rivals comes on here attempting to talk smack. There’s so few good things going on with their own teams/lives/mornings that they gotta come on here and talk smack. It truly is a compliment as they too are obsessed with what we’re doing. Love it and wouldn’t be caught dead on one of their dorky blogs. A little originality would be appreciated though. And uuuuuuuuuh…Oh yeah, Hunker Down You Hairy Dawgs!

Give RUSS the JOB. He looks more like UGA’s actual student body, than UGA VII looks like the fans want the student body to look. Don’t paint RUSS’ butt. You have color, be it very little, in your student body so Russ should show his true colors. UGA should show it’s true colors too.

Meatlake UGA fans are on Tech blogs too. ART OF WAR you must study and know your enemy inorder to understand your enemy. I went to the TECH blog first this morning. I read Mark B, Jeff S, Tech blogs, and then UGA blogs. Am I wrong for that? I have been reading the UNC blogs from North Carolina News papers and their site. The Miami Herald doe cover Miami good too.

Look guys, don’t get upset at the rival bloggers. Take it as a compliment. Think about it guys…Who do people really bad mouth, especially anonymously? Right, those of whom they are jealous.

Who do people hate for the most part? Those who are better than them, right?

So, take it as a compliment…when (if ever) some of these rival fans lose their fear and jealousy of UGA, they’ll disappear. That’s when we should be concerned, because then we won’t be relevant.

LAF will be a scrimmage and all the QBs will play to get some real game experience? I hope so. No reason to not play everybody. If you just play a few guys and run the score up it will not be a true judge of where the team is.

I’m petty sure NerdCentral is a Dawg poking fun at the Nerds who post on our boards. Back to the topic at hand. I guess my biggest surprise would be Akeem Hebron. He’s mired in the depth chart but was all-everything out of HS in Maryland. Just thought he would be making more noise. That said, Dawgs are in fine shape with Dowtin, Robinson and Dent. Don’t know how Gilliard will get a lot of PT but i’m sure they’ll rotate a fair bit. Either way, Coach Belin is a proven commodity. The Hive should be quaking in their pocket protectors…

Do you think he had a degree from UGA? I do have my degree from Kennesaw State and the Coles Business School. Check the facts and you will find the Coles Business School is well respected. I can’t be on the blog too much today. I have to go to Brimingham to close on a new contract. Should be back around 3-4.

You guys think Tech is all high and mighty because they reached a place, for 1 year, where UGA has been for the full tenure of CMR. Get a couple of more wins son, like 70 more, then come back and talk. Oh, wait a minute, there is no football blogs on the Techie page, so you have to come here. I hope our LBs are quicker than they have been the last couple of years. Maybe it was the scheme that had them hesitant about moving. But we sure were slow plugging holes and in coverage. Also people turn the corner on us also. Sometimes I think our LBs were just to big. Too much weight put on is not always the answer. Right Jesse Tuggle!

“Outlook: Uncertain and uneasy.”

Yep, that about sums it up for me. Part of me says uhoh, we’ve struck out on a lot of LB recruits in the past couple of years (yes we got some good ones too I know). Rennie left for the NFL which leaves me thinking we could be in trouble, especial since were going from having 3 on the field to 4.

But, with all of that to consider, I like what I saw out of them so far in spring practice and such. I also like how an underclassmen worked hard and took the #1 spot. At LB, that’s probably a good sign.

As a whole, I don’t think we’ll produce any all SEC’rs (maybe Justin Houston), but they should be a satisfying group.

ps: just copy and paste this statement on tomorrow’s blog.

USAFdawg, I thought Hebron would be in the mix too. I know he had the suspension a while back but thought he would be playing 1st string by now. One of the few players I remember from the Army All Star game becasue it seemed like he had a nose for finding the football. Covered the field well.
