Defensive line: Do Dogs have a nose for the new scheme?
6:00 am June 21, 2010, by Tim Tucker
(Note: I’m on vacation, so the UGA blog is on quasi-hiatus. But rather than shutting down entirely, I thought we could use this lull for a leisurely look at the 2010 football team. I put together synopses of the various position groups, and one posts each weekday -– last week the offense, this week the defense. Please share your thoughts, hopes, concerns, etc., about each position.)
TODAY: DEFENSIVE LINE
- Returning starter: Senior DE Demarcus Dobbs, although his position is the same in name only in the new 3-4 alignment.
- Others to watch: Sophomore Abry Jones is No. 1 on the latest depth chart at left end (as is Dobbs at right end), and junior DeAngelo Tyson is No. 1 at the nose position. Justin Anderson, a junior who missed spring practice after January surgery on his right shoulder, has moved from the offensive line, where he started seven games in 2008 and five in 2009, to the defensive line, where he is expected to be a big factor at nose in preseason practice. The top backups at each position on the post-spring depth chart are senior Brandon Wood at LE, redshirt freshman Kwame Geathers at nose and senior Kiante Tripp at RE.
- Key losses: The defensive line was decimated by the loss of three senior tackles, all of them chosen in the NFL draft — fourth-round pick Geno Atkins and seventh-round picks Jeff Owens and Kade Weston.
- Key fact: The transition from the 4-3 to the 3-4 — three down linemen and four linebackers, rather than vice versa –- comes at a propitious time for the line, given the loss of Atkins, Owens and Weston. One less spot to fill.
- Key questions: How will the talent on hand fit the new scheme? How effective will Tyson or perhaps Anderson be at the critical nose position?
- Recent developments: The move of the 6-5, 330-pound Anderson, decided upon during spring practice even though he was injured, speaks to Georgia’s comfort level with the depth on its offensive line -– but also to concerns about depth on the defensive line and the nose position in particular. Anderson is expected to be 100 percent healthy for the start of preseason practice, and his progress at nose will be a closely watched storyline. Said Mark Richt, speaking of the nose position: “It’s going to be a challenge to see if these guys can really control the double teams that they need to inside. That’s part of the reason we moved Justin Anderson in there — because he is a big, giant, powerful man. And if he can take to it, I think he’s going to be tough to block.”
- Outlook: Very much a work in progress, very much an area of concern.

In the recent past I might have been worried, but we now finally have defensive coaches who know what they’re doing. A work in progress, yes, but one which I trust in the end results.

Moving Anderson is absolutely crazy. If Chris Davis was starting ahead of Anderson, that means he must be better. If he’s better, then move him to nose. This ranks right up there with the Kiante Tripp debacle. He and Anderson ought to file a claas action. Roll tide. Thanks again for James Carpenter and Chance Warmack, two Georgia earth movers that make up the left side of the Tide’s offensive line. I know Florida appreciates Maurice Hurt, Auburn Byrom Isom, Arkansas Ray Dominguuez, and especially UT, with big Jujuan James. Thanks Uga, for helping us beat you with you own homegrown talent! Roll tide!

Tide Roll , Mark Richt is 3-1 against Alabama. What are you talking about. But really, what I don’t understand is why you are on this blog. I can understand UT,GT,Auburn,South Carolina and florida. They are RIVALS. UGA and Alabama really don’t have much of a rival. In fact, UGA fans probably pull for Alabama to win often (when they play UT,GT,Auburn,South Carolina and florida). You just seem to prove what most people on these blogs say about Alabama fans.

Ya’ll’s coaching staff continues to feed programs you compete against with NFL calibre offensive line talent! Marcus Mcneill, Chris Scott, James Carpenter, Jujuan James and if Ed christian out of Lowndes is what I think he is: He’s going to Help Auburn Kick your butt the same way Chris Scott helped Ut do it. Oh, by the way I forgot Big Duke Robinson out of Oklahoma. As you look at these names Uga fans, an interesting pattern emerges, does’nt it. Roll Tide.

Tide Roll – Please find another place to read and make comments. You are pretty annoying but I guess you get joy out of that. How old are you? 12.
I am worried about the nose position. I think Tyson would be better and end than nose and this move will limit his effectiveness. Hope Geathers and Anderson can contribute at that spot.

Roll Tide, why are you obsessed with offensive linemen from Georgia. You have a son NOT recruited by UGA or something? Or was it you yourself?
Yeah, UT has had their way with the Dogs the last few years, but I’d hardly say their O-line has led them to the promised land.
So look chief, if you wanna have your All-American O-line fantasies…great! But don’t dribble your crap here, get a room okay…

Bama had a great season last year but that was last year. Be conservative with your opinion until you see how your depleted defence plays. And there will not be a team in the SEC that will stop the run at UGA. We have a seasoned O-line with over 150 starts combined and two of the best backs in the SEC. The defense is on the rebound with a great coach. UGA will be no push over be glad we are not on your schedule.

Kwame will win that job by the end of the fall. He’s UGA’s best option at a true 3-4 nose, 2 gap nose. Unless UGA is going to run the Dallas Cowboy 1 gap 3-4 scheme, which is weird, but works. Then UGA has more options at NT….

I did a little research for Tide Roll. is hero J. Anderson? The kid he insists would be an All-American if he started? Not offered by Alabama. Wow, the Tide really missed out on that one.
Oh, and Boling? The kid who shouldn’t even get on the field? Touted as one of the top 3 o-line prospects in the draft next year. Also, not offered by Bama. But rated higher than any lineman on the Tide roster. But those opinions are by NFL draft analysts, guys with much less “feel” for the subject than TR.
By the way, Jones WAS offered a scholly by the Tide. UGA was just the team that “discovered” him. Yep you missed one in your backyard.
Now. am I saying that UGA is great at evaluating and recruiting while Alabama is terrible? Not at all. Just pointing out that teams recruit kids for different reasons. All teams hit some and miss some. If the UGA coaches thought Posey, for example, was a good fit for their program, he would’ve been recruited.
Time to get off Searls’ back though. 1. He found a great one in Jones and 2. he took a raw kid in Boling and turned him into one of the top linemen in the country.
Until next time…

With the loss of the 3 DL’s to the NFL draft, it was a good time to move to the 3-4, less guys needed on the D-Line to run it. Feel ok with Jones/Dobbs, both are a little small for DE’s.
For the nose, you got a lot of options, Anderson is 6-5 325, Geathers is 6-6 325, and Mike Thornton is also coming in soon. Tyson’s #1 on the depth chart right now, kind of small at 6-4 305, but so was Jay Ratliff at Dallas, and Ratliff’s size wasn’t a problem there.
Also have some of the most highly touted DE’s in the country coming in soon, although they need to bulk up some.
The DL should be good–you only need 3 solid guys to make the 3-4 DL go. Phil Steele has the Georgia DL ranked #33 DL unit in the country, not too bad.

The 2 DE new recruits are both fast, and at their size, TJ Stripling at 6-6, and Garrison Smith at 6-4, will get some time at DE, especially on 3rd down passing situations. Once they add some weight to their frame, they might end up getting more playing time in 2011. But I look for them to both be a force on 3rd down passing situations this season. With their height and speed, tough cover for a big OL.

Tide Roll, most Georgia fans concur with you on your points about Georgia High School football:
1. We are aware that the state plays superior high school football and produces more talent than UGA can sign. No need to keep listing the same names over and over.
2. Whereas Georgia, Florida, and LSU can win big with in-state talent, we realize surrounding states do not play such high quality high school football, thus Bama, Auburn and UT have to come to Georgia for talent. When the Dogs cherry pick an AJ Green, Stafford, Moreno, or Ben Jones, they do so from a position on strength, and not necessity like the Vols, Tide, and Plainsmen.
Despite the player losses you repeatedly list to out of state schools, the bottom line on UGA’s offensive line is that most experts rate it as one of the top O-lines in the USA, and probably the best in the SEC. That is why our coaches can move talents such as Anderson and Tripp to the defense.

There is only one major difference in state of Alabama vs state of Georgia. Alabama is well, um, Alabama. See the movie Driving Miss Daisy, in which Morgan Freeman, while driving into the state of Alabama for the first time, he says “Miss Daisy, did I tell you about the first time that I drove over to Alabama”? and she says, “well no.” He answers with ” I just crossed the Alabama state line a minute ago and so far, it ain’t much.” Folks …………..that says it all.
Remember Bama fans ……………after Bear and Gene’s ONE YEAR, it has been very, very, very, very lean, with losses to S.E. Louisianna and to Utah? in the 08 Sugar Bowl? That last one was a blow out to a wanna be mid major.
Always be humble and life will be good. Bear preached that. Ask Ken Stabler.

IMO, the DL will take a few games to jell with the new scheme in live action. Not too worried about the size of the DE’s. UGA lacked pressure on the QB and RB’s last season so the speed of the DE’s will help with that. You guys forget Cornelius Washington could split as a LE or RE. Guy doesn’t weigh but 250 but runs a 4.29!? Not too many O lineman can hang with that. To an earlier point on here, I’m more concerned with the secondary making sure they stop folks.

Defense will have more energy, aided by a fresh new staff with no baggage, new talent. They will be more exciting to watch. I doubt very seriously it will surrender fewer yard than past couple of years though. It will surender fewer points which is a pretty easy goal. The rest of team will also stop insisting on spotting the other guys 14, so Grantham will get credit for that as well. We need his first year to be viewed as a turning point. recruiting, interest, fan support depend on it. This will not be a championship defense this year BUT it will apear to be a squad headed in the right direction. Partly because everybody is so tired of the negativity that the actual stats won’t feel as bad.
As far as the transition from 4-3 to 3-4, I think that get way too much attention. Nobody is purely one or the other all the time, and once the action starts, I doubt the average fan is going to be able to point out the nuances.

My biggest concern for the season so far is game #2 against Steve Spurrier. That man is a great coach and I think he will do a great job in scheming against a new 3-4 defense. Good post, AltamahaDawg. I totally agree. This season’s D will be a work in progress, but should be fun to watch nonetheless. BAMA was +19 in turnovers last season. No way they generate that this year. The D-Line and secondary is much less experienced than last season. You have a mediocre QB in Greg McElroy who will be exposed this season. And on top of that: Ole Miss, Miss. State, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Auburn ALL have bye weeks prior to playing Bama. Any of those teams are capable of pulling off the upset. Nonsense I hear you Bama fans say? Need I remind you that this is a program that is only a few years removed from losing to ULM and Utah. Bama still has a decent season, but it will be the 10-2 or the 9-3 variety instead of 14-0.

Let’s run some things down…..
A) Your football team or (dream team) went to a (DREAM BOWL) in shreveport( 2nd worst SEC BOWL)!!!
B) You lost to Kentucky at home for the 1st time since jimmy carter was president!
C) Your hoops team sat at home while GT was ranked and enjoying the NCAA tourney and played for ACC TITLE!
D) Your baseball team got swept by GT and beaten 25-6 on your OWN FIELD AND YOUR FANS POURED OUT BEFORE THE 4TH INNING! GT was in regionals, again..ugay sat at home!!!!
I just want to say that in football, we finished ranked ahead of you last year in all polls, were ranked ahead of you in basketball in all polls last year and finished ahead of ugay in baseball by miles! GT enjoyed a BCS football game and ACC TITLE ( I missed what channel UGAY was on playing for any title)….Baseball team swept ugay and the Hoops team finished ahead of UGAY and went to the NCAA tourney. 2 of 3, UGAY SAT AT HOME!!!
Your football team fell short of expectations 2 straight years as you were preseason #13 last year and finished not even in the top 30! You baseball team was in college world series 2 years ago and now one of the worst teams in the SEC! That’s awesome!!! Seems GT has had a much better year redneck, only a joe dirt like you with no brain could try and argue the facts. When you end up ranked behind a team, you can’t say you are better, PLAIN AND SIMPLE! You didn’t finish ahead of GT in any of these 3 sports and even though you won a rival game in 2 of them, you guys sports teams sucked for the most part! You play to earn a postseason bid, and when your at home, you just SUCK! Enjoy mediocrity yet again in 2010 LOSERS!

Tide Roll,
I’m not even sure if you’re a real Bama fan since no Bama fan that I know says Tide Roll. Even dawg fans know that we say Roll Tide and not tide roll.
I like to read the dawg and Tech blogs just to see what’s going on with the local teams since I’ve lived in ATL 20 years. I assume you like to do the same. I might have a comment if its something that’s just an observation or something the dawg fans might find of interest. But your comments are the same drivel day after day. Something about UGA losing a lot of their instate talent, why is so and so starting or not starting on their O-line, etc. How many times do you have to repeat the same stuff? And damn if your spelling and grammar isn’t embarrassing.
If you’re going to post the same stuff over and over at least do a trial run on word with the spell check on. Better yet just do what I do and read the blog but keep idiotic comments to yourself. Or if you make a comment on someone else’s blog make it something objective or interesting. It beats flame throwing with poor spelling and grammar.

I peruse articles about our rivals occasionally just to keep up.
Last week, after reading an article critical of Urban Meyer, I posted a comment for the first time in an article about rival school.
I actually defended Meyer. Stating simply that ALL schools have discipline issues. Meyer has an enormous ego and in this case that works to UF’s advantage. The last thing Meyer could stand is for himself and UF to be viewed as Peter Carroll and USC are viewed right now.
So “haters”, if you must speak, state something with some merit, pro or con, it doesn’t matter. That doesn’t mean quoting every stat you can find on the internet either.
The next time you want to post one of your juvenile comments, be sure to email your parents, it will confirm their worst nightmare, specifically, they did in fact raise a complete idiot.

The Dawgs are going to have a good chance to always beat anyone in the SEC. With that said the one team that has had our number of recent years is UF. However, things tend to go in cycles as Georgia still leads the series against them. But the sun doesn’t alwways shine on the same dogs backside always so we will have our turn again, hopefully soon. As for Roll Tide, he reminds me a bit of St. Simons. Instead of staying on a blog devoted to Bama football he deems it necessary to come on a Dawg blog spewing propaganda that is a lot like swiss cheese, full of holes. Yes, GA dones each year have a higher grade of hs prospects as does Fla in comparison to Alabama and TN so yes neighboring states do come in and tap into our hs football resources. But just as St. Simons had their one year when the Bee’s upset the Dawgs remember St. Simons 8 out of 9 we have won against Tech. Remember Roll Tide 3 out of 4 we have won against Bama. So to all the nay sayers have your fun the year you beat us coming on GA blogs as that seems to give you a thrill. But for me, I stick to blogs about the program I love and have enough respect for the great Universities that we play to avoid trying to down trod their Universities especially on their blogs and more importantly the very talented athletes.

D-Line was stout against the run last year but got no pressure on the QB. I’d like to see the DL go lighter and faster–going with speed over size, except for Nose. With 3 NFL D-lineman, we got no pressure on the QB. Of course, we were running the 4-3 too, now it’s the 3-4. Like to see TJ, Garrison, Jones, Tyson and Thornton use their quickness and speed and get in there and reak havoc.
UGA has 4 top 5 ranked pass rushers in the nation Tyson, TJ, Garrison, & Jones.

Geathers is currently listed at #2 on the depth chart behind DeAngelo Tyson. I contacted my best source for reliable info. He says, Geathers will make waves this fall, as he did in the G-Day game. Extremely quick feet and difficult to block one-on-one. We “might” even occasionally see Tyson at one of the DE spots with KG in the middle.

Dawg Tired,
No. You don’t win most of the time against all those teams. Maybe carolina and clemson. But certainly not AU and Bama. UGA holds a 1 game edge in the series vs AU so I would hardly call 1 game over .500 is winning most of the time.
As for Bama they own the series lead over UGA by a double digit margin of 11 games. They own you and while Mark Richt has won 3 of 4 against Bama he padded those stats against Mike Shula probation era bama teams. Alabama has won 4 of the last 7 against UGA. Say what you will about that annoying Bammer fan but the truth of the matter is that alltime the bammers own you by a wide margin and that isn’t gonna change anytime soon.

1) Grantham was offered the defensive head coach of Mich St.–said ok, then rejected Saban for the NFL a few weeks later

2) Grantham was offered the defensive head coach of Miami Dolphins–rejected Saban to work with the Browns.

Even though he spurned Saban more than once to run Saban’s defense, Saban continues to hire Saban in the off-seasons to train his Crimson Tide.
Saban trained Kirby Smart & Muschamp, Grantham will be better than both combined. Look for UGA to be a top ranked defense in 2010, THE top defense in 2011 once Grantham gets his exact body types in here.

These guys are obviously being passed over (and we Know why don’t we) and this kind of crap is what’s costing you championships.I think the s. ga. good ole boys on your staff with their “chew tobacco country strong” attitude is whats hurting you .you need a more sophisticated staff and program with opened minded coaches like at Florida. this is the reason they’ve whipped you 17 out of 20 years. Sec Record Keeper – I prefer to talk about recent history. Hell, we have beaten Florida much more than they’ve beaten us if you look at the overall record. Unfortunately, reality is they currently own us. The same is not true of Bamer, Auburn, etc. Richt has a winning record against all of the ones I listed. Since he’s entering his 10th season, I stick by my statement. I been a UGA fan for over 50 years, These things go in cycles. I’ve seen us dominate Florida, I’m seeing Florida currently dominate us. I’ve seen the series with Auburn go back and forth as well. Same with Tech. I assume you are smart enough to get the picture. Of course, my assumptions are not always accurate.
My main point was to point out the absolute absurdity of Tide Rolls even being on this web site making comments in the first place, much less indicating Bamer dominates UGA in recruiting the top prospects in the state of Georgia, which anyone but an idiot would know not to be true. Bamer gets some of their best players from this state Otherwise, they would be much less of a team year in and year out. They are currently on a high. They currently have a great football coach who can not be trusted to remain loyal to the hand that feeds him. Simple fact. Recruiting has not been our problem. Richt gets most of the in-state players he goes after, which is to be expected.
Dawg Tired

Doug – So you think recruiting is not going well? I get the opposite impression. The 12 commitments so far look strong to me. Are you saying we are simply recruiting the wrong guys? I ask that because we seem to be getting most of the kids we go after. As to not winning the big game, hasn’t Coach Richt won 2 out 3 in the SEC title game? Or are you convinced that last year is the start of bad times? Well, why don’t we play the games and see what happens?
I don’t know what the future holds. However, I’ve been through worst times than this in following the Dawgs for more than 50 years. I’m cautiously optimistic about the future. I see you have soured on the Dawgs. Sorry to see that.

The DW _ Maybe you’re right, but the future I was talking about is more than just next season. However, Sporting News College Football mag. picks Dawgs 2nd in SEC East behind Florida. While I’m not saying finishing 2nd behind Florida is my goal, you gotta admit that being picked 2nd behind Florida at least indicates they think we’ve got a pretty good team. We are talking about the best conference in college football. Only one team will be ranked # 1 in the nation when it is all said and done. I assume any one with average intelligence has enough sense to know that “cautiously optimistic” does not include a number 1 ranking. Hell, we just came off a terrible year at 8 and 5. Only Tech fans think 8 and 5 is good, although they seem to sort of understand that 8 and 5 in the SEC equals at lteast 10 wins in the ACC (.SOME of them sort of understand that).”Cautiously optimistic” for the upcoming season to me would be 10 and 3 or 11 and 2 for a team playing in the SEC. Anything less than 10 wins would be disappointing. I’ve been disappointed many times in the over 50 years of being a Dawg fan. I was cautiously optimistic before the 1980 season. As a more than 50 year fan of UGA, I’ve seen us win more than we’ve lost to those rascals, but this current stretch has been dreadful.

Paul – you could be right. What do you think will happen if we only win 8 games this year? I submit Coach Richt will be forced out if that happens. Having lived through Jim Donnan being an absolute embarrassment, I would hate to see it happen, but the Nation is restless.

To Georgia fans. I think its a good thing others come to blog on our site. Have you seen the blandness of those other sites. These arguments make these (the AJC’s dawg sites) much more entertaining than the rest IMO. So let’em come. Its fun. I think it would rally be boring without them.

To all. I think the end of CMR’s tenure at UGA is highly over rated at this point. He has done most of what he needed to do as far as the D is concerned. In time. Maybe this year but at least by next Granthams D will be the bomb. That will be enough to save him. I still don’t know about Booboo. Just 1 huge ? in my mind. I really like what he did with Mett. eventough it will not come to fruition for us. But some of the offensive playcalling can be awful at times, especially against Florida.

8 wins, if improvement in defense, to’s, penalties, competetive with fla, CMR sticks around. I think the fans just want to see improvement in those areas, just getting sick of seeing those 4. 9 wins would be even better, but I don’t see it this year, you can figure loss to Fla, Ark, SC, Auburn, and Tech. Hope to beat Tenn & Kentucky for a change. Don’t mind losing 5 close games, but no more blowouts, and all losses must be to good teams, not beating ourselves, and not losing to teams like Kentucky & Tenn.

From the defense, don’t expect miracles this ywar. Like to see either a td less points a game or 2 forced turnovers per gamefrom the defense. Eithe ris fine. From the offense, I wanna lose onlybecause we run the ball too much, the young QB is 40% inaccurate and takes too many sacks. I can live wiht that.

Think Michael Thorton might be like a David Pollack. A lot more player than first perceived. I think he is out to prove something that many left him off their top teams. But something tells me he is going to be a special at UGA. I feel he has the heart and drive to push himself and could make a early contribution.

Hey THWU,
How can you possibly say Georgia Tech was better than UGA last year in basketball and football. In both HEAD to HEAD competitions we won 73-66 and 30-24, respectively. In sports the only true litmus test for judging a teams talent against another is to play head to head- and we did… END OF STORY. Yes, GT had a MUCH better baseball team this past year, and it showed every time we played you. But sir, you have no argument for basketball or football, despite what you did as a whole on the season.
Now to the defensive line.
The switch to the 3-4 was DEFINITELY well timed, and I 100% support the decision to move Justin Anderson to the other side of the ball. I mean, why not? You are taking a player from a position where we have the MOST depth, and bringing him over to where we have absolutely NO depth. And like Richt said, at 330 lbs. he will not be easily budged. Also, history has shown that this switch end up paying off. I’m not worried about Tyson at all, however- I think he will be just fine.
Bottom Line: Our D line is definitely shallow depth-wise, but the starters should be able to handle the pressure. In a 3-4 defense, all the flying around is done by the linebackers, so I would rather have depth at that position anyway.
Can’t wait for the start of the season… GO DAWGS!

Tide Roll,
You’re an idiot, let me count the ways
1.”What do Marcus Mcneil, Jonathan Palmer, Kurt Quarterman, Stephon Heyer, Chris Scott, amd Duke Robinson have in common? Answer: they’re all homegrown Georgia boys and offensive lineman who attended out of state schools and are now playing in the NFL! These guys are obviously being passed over “–Oh, right! That’s the answer! They’re all being passed over! Look you’re not going to get every instate recruit! Does BAMA get every recruit for Alabama? Oh course not.
2. We have indeed gotten the crap kicked out of us by Florida, but you know what? Florida has been pretty good the last 2 decades, especially in the 90’s when they were really good and the Dawgs were REALLY bad! They have pretty much a winning record against every SEC team. Some teams just have other teams numbers, and unfortunately Florida has ours right now!
3. As for settling for mediocrity, up until the last 2 years, you Bama “fans” would know all about that. That is if you were actually a Bama fan prior to the Nick Saban bandwagon. I can’t recall UGA having any 3-8 or 4-9 seasons in this decade.

Living in alabama, I have always liked all SEC teams to win except when playing UGA…but these Bama fans forget Saban was 7-6 his first year and the Tide was 46-40 from 2000 to 2006…and embarrassed the SEC with strippergate!!! Be humble my friends, be humble….

I see you mutts have finally gotten around to fixing up my field. We Vols truly enjoy having fresh turf down on our second home.
While yer at it, trim my hedges and give them a good watering…it’s hot outside!
When I come through Athens on July 2nd, I expect Neyland South to be shipshape. Get to it!

The thing that bugs me is that there are several teams that have a lot of questions but all I ever here about is UGA’s problems. If you ask me Tech has the same questions as UGA. Florida and Alabama lost a good portion of there D. Florida lost Strong and we saw what happened to them the last time he left.
