Quarterbacks: Dogs need a solid (and injury-free) season from Aaron Murray
6:00 am June 18, 2010, by Tim Tucker
(Fifth in a summertime series looking at Georgia’s football team by position.)
TODAY: QUARTERBACKS
- Depth chart: Redshirt freshman Aaron Murray is No. 1, would-be wide receiver Logan Gray No. 2 and true freshman Hutson Mason No. 3.
- Attrition: Joe Cox (24 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions as last season’s starter) graduated, and redshirt freshman Zach Mettenberger was dismissed from the team.
- Key fact: The three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster have thrown a total of 12 collegiate passes (all by Gray, a junior).
- Key fact II: Murray was rated the No. 3 quarterback prospect in the nation coming out of high school and was named MVP of the prestigious Elite 11 quarterbacks camp.
- Key questions: How smoothly will Murray make the transition to No. 1 QB? Will he be able to heed his coach’s don’t-try-to-be-a-hero refrain and protect the football as Georgia tries to dramatically reduce last season’s turnovers (28)? And after being sidelined from throwing in practice for four weeks last season because of triceps and forearm tendinitis, will he be able to stay healthy? (As for the latter, Murray has said he’s more focused on “shoulder maintenance” this year to keep the arm strong and fresh.)
- Recent developments: It was no surprise that Murray emerged from a three-way competition in spring practice as the No. 1 quarterback, but his grip on the job was unexpectedly tightened by two post-spring developments. First, Mettenberger was kicked off the team shortly before pleading guilty to misdemeanor sexual battery. Next, Gray considered transferring before electing to remain with the Dogs and divide his time between quarterback and wide receiver. (It remains unclear, even to the coaches, exactly how that QB/WR juggling act is going to play out.)
- Outlook: Murray is a smart, hard-working and very talented player for whom Georgia won a recruiting battle against Florida and many other schools. He passed for 4,013 yards and 51 touchdowns as a junior at Tampa’s Plant High School and returned early from a broken fibula and dislocated ankle to guide the team to a state championship as a senior. So his credentials are strong. The only thing is, he’ll be a (redshirt) freshman starting at quarterback in the SEC, no easy task. The key to his season –- and perhaps Georgia’s — is whether he can minimize mistakes while growing into the job. With returning starters at all other positions on offense, Georgia needs Murray to be solid, not necessarily spectacular.
- Your turn: What say you about the quarterbacks?

Other schools, even those in the SEC have been able to work around the youth and inexperience of a quarterback. That said, the schools that have done it successfully have done it with great line play, a solid running game, good special teams, and a dominating defense. If all other aspects of Georgia’s game improve from last season; especially the kicking game (kickoff team in particular) and Georgia’s give away/take away (the defense creating turnovers) then Murray will not feel “forced” to play hero. He can be the game “manager” Georgia needs until his comfort level really grows being an SEC QB.

The Bulldog Nation and the sportswriters need to relax concerning Aaron Murray’s ability to take the Dawgs to Atlanta. He is an exceptional leader with great vision and a hell of an arm with a quick release.

Some of you dawgs need to get a grip. Just because you read a stat line from a spring scrimmage, you think that Murray isn’t capable of running this team. As Tim states, he was the #3 QB prospect in the nation. What Tim left out was the fact that Murray was the #1 overall recruit until he broke his leg. He comes back early from injury, and has a 333 yd, 3td game in the State Championship. He is a film room junkie, and has a good head on his shoulders. He is legit, period…
Dawgbreath- As Tim mentioned, Murray was voted the MVP of the prestigious Elite 11 camp. A class that included Matt Barkley, Garrett Gilbert, and Mett. Well, the year before, Murray was invited to be a ball boy as a junior at the camp. Murray beat out all of the contestants in the camp in the accuracy challenge. This, of course, is unofficial due to the fact that Murray was a junior. His Elite 11 performance is ranked as the #2 performance in the camp’s history behind one Matthew Stafford, and you can only imagine the QB’s that have attended that camp. You can find this info on rivals. I know there is an enormous difference in competing in a camp vs. the SEC, but at least he deserves a chance before you start making comparisons.

honestly- this is the best option for the Dawgs. We need to get someone in early and get experienced, especially in the SEC. If we started Gray, it would be like Cox all over again- meaning, play 1 year, then done. This way, we have Murray & Mason for awhile, plus LeMay coming next year. I think Murray will have his ups & downs but overall, he should be a solid QB, especially the offensive returning starters.

“It was no surprise that Murray emerged from a three-way competition in spring practice as the No. 1 quarterback”. That’s somewhat untrue. I think if you are totally honest, most felt that Mettenberger was the No. 1 after the G-day game.
That being said, I think the young man should do fine. He’ll have some “rookie” plays throughout the year. That’s to be expected. If he can limit those and maintain his composure during critical situations he should be an upgrade over last year. Looks to have a bright future. Just don’t expect miracles his first year.
Good luck to ya’ll. Hope to see ya in Jax at 8-0!

My concern is that Bobo will sell out to the run. I promise you that defensive coordinators have already decided that they are going to make Murray beat them. In our mania to “protect the football”, we may put the kid in a lot of third and long situations and make him look bad. Obviously, the running game is the strength of this team. But it has to have a passing game threat to be effective.

Hey Gator Jive, it really doesn’t matter that most thought Mettenberger was the best. We didn’t see but one real scrimmage, and that’s all the spring game is. From all accounts Murray had been the most consistent all spring. Jim Donnan said last year that Murray was the best QB on the team and should have been starting over Cox. Murray is going to surprise a lot of people and he has been the coaches number one for sometime.

I think that it is sad that UGA has to pacify Logan Gray and tell him “we will practice you at WR”. Logan needs to concentrate on being a backup QB in the SEC not practicing to be the #7 option at WR.
What is the biggest need of the Dawgs? Option # 7 at WR or Option # 2 at QB?
Logan needs a reality check.

If Murray can do what Cox couldn’t, avoid turnovers, he’ll be fine. He has the luxury of a veteran O-Line (which stafford never had as a freshman, or at all really) , experienced receivers (including the best in the nation AJ Green), and a solid running back tandem. This was said about Cox, and he didn’t do it, but if Murray can just manage the game and avoid the turnovers and dumb mistakes, we’ll be fine. He’s got the talent and the work ethic, let’s hope it translates onto the field.

destin dawg – you are right. And I think CMR realized this as he has stated he will be more involved in the offense, in particular QB meetings this season than he has lately. He wanted to back off some to focus on the overall program and let Bobo run it more, but I think he realized that wasn’t working and he’s been in the meetings more and working with them more.

georgia87–Agree the DCs will want to make Murray beat them. But I expect Richt and Bobo to pass a LOT in the first (warmup) game. I’d almost guarantee the first play from scrimmage will be a pass. A quick out or screen to get him comfortable and then a long one toward AJ. They’ll stay vanilla and in the second quarter run ‘em back to Louisiana. While they don’t want to show too much, they DO want to show off the arm, if only to make them game plan for it. Expect to see Murray show all the throws in the first game. Once the conference schedule arrives, watch ‘em stay low behind the road graders.

Murray will be more than fine in this offense. The key for me is for our players on both sides of the ball to play with discipline and not put Murray in long yardage situations because of stupid penelties. The real good teams still play with recless abandon but don’t let momentum slip away at crucial times in the game with being stupid on rule violations. One last item; keep the directional kicks to the bare minimum, thank you very much!

you are correct Dawgbreath, Murray is not Stafford, and we all know that Stafford could not get you to Atlanta. And yes, he brings rather impressive stats with him, but those were in HIGH SCHOOL. Not all high schoolers that bring impressive stats to college turn out to be the next Tim Tebow, John Elway, Dan Marino, or Hershel Walker. Some of those impressive high schoolers turn out to be the next Joe Cox. I remember a couple of years ago when all the talk was about Mitch Mustain, now buried on the depth chart at USC. I also remember a highly touted QB that came to Athens with great stats named Blake Barnes. Did he ever get off the bench? My point is that Murray was a great HIGH SCHOOL QB. He has proven absolutely NOTHING in college. Let’s see what he can do against college defenses like S. Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, and others before singing his praises.

Here is yet another example of how Mark Richt can’t make the tough decisions required
of a champion head coach by allowing Gray to get half his reps at QB and half at wide
receiver, and in both positions he is a backup. Richt needed to come clean with Logan and tell him, “we really need you at QB—we have no one if Murray gets hurt.” So work hard at QB and if Murray fails to perform or is hurt, you will be the Man.
Richt is trying to split the baby in half, and that never works out. If Logan decided to transfer, then you could give your new freshman QB all the backup reps, after all he is only a year behind Murray and he too has never thrown a pass in college.
Richt maybe the only coach of a major school that allows a player to dictate what position they will play. Good grief that is sad.

Good to know Dawg4Life. I though that McElroy did a fine job in his first year starting for the Tide last year. He had a good OL and talent at the WR and TB positions. I think if Murray can manage the games and take care of the rock the O will be fine. I hope Richt helps to game plan a little more and keeps going to the QB meetings. The thing that wonder about is this Mason kid. First we weren’t going to offer a QB, upseting that kid that ended up at UT with the D’ricky. Then we end up offering Mason. I wonder what Richt or Gardner was thinking. Maybe something there as to Mason’s capabilities? Regardless, given some time under center I think Gray will be fine if Murray gets injured.

I concur with meh. I believe the same thing that the Coaches are saying. Utilize the talent around him and all he has to do is minimize the mistakes. He has a veteran offensive line to give him time in decision making and he has a great running combo in Ealy and King to help keep the pressure off of him. If the TEAM rallies around him and plays to their potiential he will have excellent results. As long as he can sustain drives so the offensive doen`t go 3 and out every posession and wear out the defense. He will be fine… We`ll find out in 78 days. GO DAWGS!!

The only way we will win a NC is to a power running team. It’s not hard. Just hand the ball off more that you throw it. I would much rather have 3rd and four than 3rd and 10. But…in order to be a power running team you have to believe that you can run the ball. I don’t think Bobo is patient enough with the running game, so…we lead the SEC in ints. Murray can not win us a championship, but the other 10 players on offense can.

i really dont see murry getting hurt..like stafford he has no problem throwing it out of bounds so he shouldnt take many hits from the pocket and he is quick.

i actually think murrys numbers will be better than brantley’s because fla offense is changing where as the bulldogs offense is still the same. fla offense will need some time adjusting to running a more balanced attack unlike the tebow days where he was either running it or faking the run and passing. brantly doesnt have that type talent to pull that off. when fla run game was shut down they had tebow to turn too. now if that happens they will have a unproven qb runnig an offense thats used to watching tebow do everything. really like murry having a better year than brantly because of this.

If I were an opposing coach, I would expect GA to run, run and then throw if necessary. The pressure is going to be put on Murray to make the first downs. Murray is going to have to step up and Richt is going to have to call the plays! If Richt does not call the plays then Bobo will have to step up and do better than he has in the past. My guess is that Richt is going to overrule a lot and call those crucial 3rd down plays.

The fact is, we have 10 starters returning from an offense that really started clicking at the end of last season. All Murray needs to do is not be Joe Cox and the offense will be in good shape (provided everyone stays healthy). That being said, the real question mark will be the defense. The Willie Martinez defenses of the last few years were been awful. As a fan, I was never confident we would stop an opponent’s offense on any given drive, and that was extremely frustrating. Grantham, more than Murray, is the key to this season.

He’s going to make mistakes like all freshman do, the speed in the SEC can only be experienced, you cant’ simulate it in practice. Give the kid some space. Despite the Kool-Aid drinkers on this site e already comparing him to Drew Brees, he’s never taken a college snap. You may want to be mindful Dawg fans, you push this kid to hard and he meltsdown in a game, you may not get the same QB back. These types of articles are only good for the delusional Dawg fan base not a 19 year old freshman QB that’s never taken a college snap. Wonder how many of you wathced him in the G-Day game, Doink!

Murray was worse than Cox in th 3 Spring scrimmages/games. Threw 54 passes, had 3 int’s, 2 td’s. .67 td to int ratio. 250% WORSE than Joe Cox’s. That’s the main concern is Murray does NOT respect the ball, and by doing so, like Cox, Murray then puts his team at risk, and shortens the field for the opposition, hurts morale, and eliminates trust form his teammates. No one made plays for Murray on the deep ball, hasn’t won his teammates over, and he was not accurate at all on the deep passes. Sure, Murray’s 59% accuracy over the 3 spring scrimmages was ok, but most were 2-5 yard dump passes which ANYONE could do. Murray’s big-time injury prone to boot, injured for last 2 seasons, doesn’t know how to take a collision or how to avoid collisions.

nothing wrong with bobo play calling..he calls a smart game just like richt does. trys not to put the qb in a bad position and each play he calls is setting up a future play that will catch the defense off gaurd sooner or later. bobo calls a game much like the pros do if you really pay attention. screens and draws are used a ton in the pros. very safe and deadly at the same time when executed the right way. bobo’s numbers speak for themselves. his offense has not been the problem. excecuting them the right way takes practice and lots of it as timing is very important. its up to the players to execute the play correctly and these past few years uga linemen have been young and have not executed correctly thus the messed up timing and lost yardage. this year the dawgs have almost everything coming together. their talent level is almost matched with their expereince.

Phil Steele says Dogs gonna average 250 yards passing, and 37 points a game.
Whoever the QB is, just needs to get 200-250 passing a game, 20-25 passing td’s, with less than 6 picks for the season.
I like Huston Mason & Logan Gray better and think they’ll end up the starter by the Florida game, due to Murray’s problems with interceptions & injuries.

Also, I expect T. King, and Dunham to have a breakout years with our other great young recievers and T. Ends, pitching in. Charles may have a moster year also if we throw enough to him. Also Ealy will be unleased from the start of the season this year; I expect a monster season from him. And the D is gonna be great right out of the Dawghouse. We got 9 guys that average 16-20 yards a catch:
AJ Green
Charles Olson
Aaron White
Figgins
Lynch
Tavarres King
Wooten
Troupe
Durham
You only need to complete 3 passes a quarter, 12 a game, for 200-240 yards passing.
12 passes a game, out of 20 throws, how hard is that?

Murray ain’t referred to as “Joe Cox Jr.” for nothing man. He did throw an interception in EVRY SINGLE spring scrimmage, all 3 of em’, and looked PITIFUL on G-Day, completed about 40%, threw an intercetion and got 0 touchdowns. He’s on track to SHATTER Joe Cox’s interception extravaganza from last season, even Cox threw more touchdowns than interceptions, and threw an interception every 20 throws, Murray’s worse. Joe Cox Jr. has his coach worried, Richt’s talking a lot about ball protection and how Murray needs to not be a hero and just manage the game. He has the Dog fans worried with his Cox-esque habits.

Gonna end up Mason at QB. Georgia based kid. L-o-v-e-s UGA. Threw for like 4500 yards, and 55 touchdowns his Senior year, 72% accuracy. On the B side of the album, the UGA defense that surrendered a league worst 252 points in SEC games will be much improved, giving more air/play time to the A side of the album, Murray and his veteran cast of supporters.
Give the O the chance to get a lead, and not feel like they have to score a TD on every possession, and they could outdo their SEC Best 232 points of 2009.
Conventional wisdom says Murray, with this team and schedule goes 9-3, but we’re all hoping for more.

You know a lot of folks commenting on here think playing at the college or pro level is as simple as playing a video game. Just push a button and complete a pass or score a touchdown. Well it ain’t! And even the best of athletes will make mistakes. We just need to make fewer of them and overcome the ones we do make. And of course that ain’t so easy either. All I can say is that our line better protect his butt! If they can do that I think we’ll be fine.

Defense and not turning the ball over are the keys to the season. Go back to 2001-2004 defense under BVG and you don’t have to get in shootouts to win. BVG gave up more than 30 points once. Willie did it all the time.

Throw the ball 20 times a game.
Average a touchdown every 13 tosses. Gets you 20 touchdowns.
Average an interception every 50 tosses. Gets you 5 interceptions.
20 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, Florida and Alabama BOTH get that kind of ratio from their QB’s, can’t be too difficult.

Did anyone not hear how the coaches couldn’t get him out of the offices talking about the playbook? Did anyone ever consider that last year’s injury was due to over-working? I think it’s this kid’s job to lead this team and be a kickarse QB. I think it’s this kid’s job to beat anyone and everyone and be a surprise Heisman candidate. How can anyone talk about 10 wins not being enough and then tell a kid “just don’t lose”? WIN you smubeetches. WIN. and win BIG!

QB is the most overrated position in college football. How many teams have won it all with only adequate QB play? I can think of many. How many teams have had some stud QB that threw for a gazillion yards and completed 90% of his passes and never won a damn thing? Again, there are many. QB is but one piece of the puzzle. College football games are won in the trenches. The team that can push around the other team up front will win 90-95% of the time. It is simply astonishing how the media cannot grasp this concept. This is the chief reason why their prognostications are so unreliable. They put undue emphasis on things like QB and other skill players, while often ignoring things like defense and the offensive line. Sure, they may pay lip service to those things time to time, but they really do not appreciate their importance. There is some clown over at SI who admitted in one of his articles that he doesn’t know much about how an offensive line works. Are you freaking kidding me? This guy is getting paid real actual money to share his opinions on college football and knows absolutely nothing about one of the most important aspects of the game? Simply laughable.
Oh well. All this preseason garbage is good for one thing: toilet paper.

I’m very excited about this upcoming year and think we will make huge improvement on the offense and defense. The thing that sticks out most to me about Murray is his competitiveness. One of the things that really shocked me last season was how bad Joe Cox’s decision making was! I never expected him to have Stafford’s ability, but I did expect him to know the offense and not make poor decisions with the football. He’d throw INT’s off his back foot, he couldn’t feel a blitz coming, he didn’t step up in the pocket well. It was just horrendous to watch at times, especially from a guy that was a 5th year senior! To be fair to Joe, the offense had to rely too much on the pass at times because the defense was so awful, and Joe was called on to carry the offense more than he arguably should have been.
As for this season, I’ll keep my expectations low with Murray, but he will have the benefit of an established running game and a go to receiver in AJ. The key for him is to stay healthy, because if he goes down, UGA is in for a rough season!

dawgfan,
I disagree with you about the Qb position. Sure, you don’t have to have a QB with great numbers to win.If you have a good running game, you can win without huge passing numbers. However, all great teams have one thing in common and that is they have a QB that does not make alot of mistakes and turnovers. A quarterback that turns the ball over will get you beat quicker than anything so i do think it’s the most important position because it can lose the game for you if you have a mistake or turnover prone qb

UGA’s gonna get about 15 offensive possessions a game. Needs to score on 6 of those. On the other 9, get a couple of 1st downs for field position and punt. 5 td’s and 1 field goal a game. That’s 38 points a game.

It will be a mistake to not turn Murray loose and let him do his thang. All this talk about “managing” the game and such sounds like people want to handcuff the kid… Big mistake. Murray is a gamer, let him rip it. Sure, he needs to be taught to throw the ball away or take a sack if nobody is open, but open the playbook for him and let the older guys lead him along and help him.
The long ball for now is done for
June 18th, 2010
12:33 pm
Gang, relax. For now at UGA, the long homerun ball is dead. Murray can dump short stuff off to his FULLBACKS and to his Tight Ends and simply have huge passing stats. Yes, he can lull the opponents to sleep with the run and the short dump off stuff. Aaron Murray will throw deep when it presents itself. AJ and Chris Durden and Wooten and Israel Troupe and Tavarres King and MARVELOUS MARLON BROWN will do some damage. Logan Gray can be one nifty weapon in certain siutations too. Wait and see.
The offense can dictate to most teams with our line. Murray will be fine. JC was the only QB game in town last year and he did not make it. The Ok State game was easily winnable but we had the flu bug and after the first drive or two, we went into the toilet. Our D and our gameplan failed that day.
The KY game was a complete breakdown too. JC Pics and goal line fumbles cost us that win at home. The LSU game was finally ours ………….BUT a complete breakdown on the last UGA kick off and our linebackers’ failure to lock up on the Charles Scott sweep cost us that game.
The UT game? Who knows? That day their QB just owned us, because we had no d answer for their very average QB. UGA laid down that day and the UGA players know it.
Take away about 5-6-8 plays in 09 and UGA wins two or three more games ……..LSU, KY and Ok State with UT a toss up. THAT is the way 2009 should have gone.
Oh yeah, the DROPPED TD in the TECH game by Wooten, while in full stride at the tech 30 would have made that game more of a run away than it really was.
Good news ………….. 2010 is getting closer!!! Is UGA HUNGRY?? Time will tell.

Bobo needs to get better at teaching his QB’s how to protect the ball, and how to disguise where they’re going wiht the ball. They’re just too easy to read.
think of the last Florida game. Cox hits a defensive guy who’s in his face instead of taking a sack. That guy knew where Cox was going with the ball.
Logan Gray drops back, Spikes in his pre-read, knew where Gray was going, hid behind a lineman, took a sharp angle for an EASY walk in to the end zone pick 6.
Bobo has to fix this pre-read stuff, Georgia’s QB’s have been WAY too easy to read.
How bout showing Florida a line up they’ve seen on film, and then using the same blocking schemes, but a different play? Ever thought of that? Nooo!
How bout paying some big time NFL LB coaches to come in and scout the Georgia QB’s for unconscious tip off’s and pre-reads?
Let’s be hard to read this year in formations, and from the QB’s.

Also got a preferred walkon in Greg Bingham that is already up in Athens. Big strong kid (bigger than most of his linemen in high school) I have seen him throw a ball 70 yards on the run. He spent most of his high school running out of an option offense which kept his passing numbers down. ALso was an all bi-city goalie for 3 years. Toughness – People would come to practice just to watch him and the middle linebacker go at it during board drills. Has the footwork and probably raised the average SAT score on the football team by a few points.

If Richt’s some kind of offensive genius, be nice for him to average 40 points a game this year on offense. He has the talent. Florida’s doing it, why can’t Richt? Meyer runs more than passes, lots less turnovers, and uses his playmakers much better. Meyer used Percy & Tebow & Henandez, wore them out. Saban wears out Ingram. Richt doesn’t use his playmakers. With Olson, Ealey, Green, I’d make a defense stop those 3 to beat me. Get Boykin back on KR, get Green returning punts.

Judgng someone on the spring game? Wow. Did it ever occur to you that the g-day game is an intersquad scrimmage? How bad would it have made you feel if Murray torched the defense for 3tds and 250yds? He went up against players who see the same plays every day. This is not floriduh. We do not let our qbs go against the scrubs for stat building (confidence building). Murray will be great. Richt used Charles as a freshman 2.5 times more than Meyer used Hernandez as a freshman. Richt had Ealey touch the ball more per game as a freshman than Saban did with Ingram as a freshman. As you really going to say that AJ wasnt used if he was healthy. And of cource Meyer used tebow, uh, he’s QB.
And UF did not score 40 last year either. Nobody in the SEC did.

1.Dawg4life- congrats on a great post. I concur with your observations.
2. Hutson Mason would be a more apt comparison with Joe Cox. Both put up big high school numbers, without a lot of eyecatching physical measurables. Murray has significantly better physical tools than Cox did, stronger arm, quicker release, better foot speed. For those who persist in this comparison, check out the offer list from each. Do you think Cox was on the Gators’ priority recruits list?
3. For those who think some Georgia fans are going overboard on Murray. No more so than Gator fans on Brantley. How much crunch time game experience does he have? Personally, I think both Murray and Brantley will do well, but don’t act like the Florida fanbase isn’t high on him like Georgia is on Aaron.

Ingram- 271 carries, 32 receptions
Ealey- 125 carries, 3 receptions
Henandez- 68 receptions
Charles- 23 receptions
Harvin- 83 rushes, 53 receptions
Green- 5 rushes, 53 recpretions
2- Florida averaged 41.6 points a game in 2008, UGA averaged 28 in 2009

cantondawg, I agree. That’s why I said ADEQUATE QB play is sufficient. Asking a QB not to turn the ball over is like asking a linebacker to make tackles or asking the kicker to kick field goals. Its their job. Just because they don’t turn the ball over and make boneheaded mistakes doesn’t mean they are a great or even good quarterback. And I am certainly not saying I don’t want a stud quarterback on my team. Of course I do. I would kill to have Stafford back. Its just not as important to success as the media dorks make it out to be. That’s all.

Ingram played a full season, Ealey did not. Doesnt matter because unless you give us Ingrams stats from 9 games from his freshman year, the comparison means nothing. Also ran behind one of the better o-line in the SEC last year. Did Ealey? Did I mention Ealey was a freshman and played a partial season?
Hernandez was a senior, Charles a freshman. Hernandez had 9 cathes his first year, Charles 23. Looks to me that Richt is way ahead on this curve already.
And why on earth would you compare Harvin to Greene in 08′? (excluding Tebow) Harvin WAS thier running game. We had a little guy named Knowshon Moreno..rememebr? KM had 250 attempt by himslef. It take the entire rest of the UF plus Harvin to equal that. Was Knowshon a “playmaker”?
Hurt several game AJ (playmaker) Green still had way more action than any reciever on Bama’s team. So? What does that prove?
Any other aples to compare with oranges?
Uf also average in the mid 30 last year with what should have been a BETTER offence, but wasnt. Why not? 28 is more than UF averaged while winning a NC in 2006, so obviously that’s not the whole story.

Bottom line is we will see what Aaron Murray is made of when he gets in a “real game.” By all accounts/interviews with current and past coaches, and those who have seen him in person, he is quite the leader and a “gamer.” I don’t really care what he did in the G day game. I thought he had the least time to throw and was blitzed more by the #1 D than any of the three quarterbacks on that day (maybe by design if he was projected to be the #1 starter), and you won’t see that in the stat line. He also threw some balls that were in the hands of the receivers and dropped.
Time will tell. It’s impossible to predict what kind of season that he will have, but I think the coaches are going to put him in the best possible situation to succeed.
He certainly has all the high school accolades and awards. Elite 11 MVP, Parade All American, # 3 QB overall by Rivals, #3 overall in category “Best Arm,” Rivals 100 and ESPNU 150. I think I read an article a while back on the ESPN site in which Colt McCoy was quoted as saying he was one of the most impressive young quarterbacks that he hade seen. It’s interesting that ESPN has him rated the same as Garret Gilbert from Texas, who I thought played exceptional given the circumstances in the BCS NC game as a true freshman. It’s also interesting that Murray is rated as an 87 on ESPN, while Lemay, who some have stated will replace Murray, is currently rated at 82. Shouldn’t these ratings be consistent from year to year?
Now the Dawg fans want to see some of that “hype” on the field. I’m sure he will make mistakes from time to time, but hopefully, he will show some of that promise as both an efficient passer and leader. Time will tell.

Got to wonder what potential recruits think about the DAWG fans when they read some of these comments. What must their parents think about sending their kids to such a negative place. gadawgs- I was about to write basically the same thing you just posted. Anybody that judges the team or players by the spring “game” don’t know crap about football. The coaches set up all kinds of scenarios to test/gauge players for the purpose of teaching/coaching. I remember playing linebacker and my coach telling me to go half speed on a particular play then go offsides and crack the center on the next play before he could snap the ball. They did the same thing on offense, like telling the qb to purposely make a bad pitch, etc. You just absolutely can’t judge anyone on the stats of a g-day game.

I’m a Bill Walsh guy. Walsh taught you don’t judge a kid by his highlight film, you judge him by his 10 worst plays. Yeah, you look at his 10 best plays too, but you balance that by looking at his 10 worst plays. Then you look for something that “wows” you. Like 8 touchdowns in a playoff game like Mason did. Mason got Lassiter to it’s 1st playoff in school history. Got a teammate to make “the catch” that made ESPN highlights. Mason has it all, 10 incredible plays, 10 not real bad plays, and several “wow” moments. Ealey’s 155 td’s in high school were “wowable”. AJ’s a ‘wow” highlight reel. Lemay has some “wow wow” moments. Don’t see any wow stuff from Murray or Gray.

At least John Brantley has played in several games and has some experience. Tha only experience Murray has is in HIGH SCHOOL. Before annointing him the next Tim Tebow, let’s see what he can do against college defenses. Remember that for all his accomplishments, TT did not start until his sophomore season. Murray is virtually being forced to start now due to attrition. Even Stafford the Great did not start the season as #1. I see a minimun of 4 losses, and possibly 5.

JMac 01203, Stafford was indeed a HS stud. Also, (just as Mel Kiper predicted when Matt came to UGA) he was the #1 NFL draft pick.
Gray’s too good of an athlete to not be on the field. He needs to get reps at WR & H-Back (if not playing QB). Mason (also) has talent & could be a decent #2 QB (if Gray was hurt). In addition to focusing on rushing the ball, the Dawgs also need to pass (much) more to the TEs & FBs (underneath) & take some focus off the WR Corps.

Montana, Brady, Brees, all have between a 2.35% to 2.7% int ratio.
Let’s say UGA QB throws it 20x a game for 12 games, that’s 240 throws, 2.5% would eb 6 int’s, about 1 int every 2 games or 1 int every 40 passes.
Kosar won a Natl Champ at Miami in 82′ as a redshirt freshman. Didn’t throw a lot of int’s. Threw just enough td’s (15), and completed a lot of short/high % passes (61%), for about 2300 yards for the season.

Mountain, I never said Stafford was not a HS stud. What I referred to was that depending on which recruiting service you read, either Stafford or Tebow or Mustain was rated #1. All services had them as the top 3. While he was a stud coming in to Athens, he did not lead the pups to any championships. He could not duplicate his HS sucess in college. He was a very good QB who had a hard time making quick decisions. He wound up the #1 draft pick, something that I think Detroit regrets. If Stafford (and Knowshon) could not get it done, why do all you guys think that an untried, untested and unproven QB like Murray will do any better. Let the guy prove that he is even half as good as you guys think he is. Until then….

CL, I too am puzzled by this feeling that we need to get Gray in the mix as much as possible. I think IF he gets significant playing time as a WR its more likely next year. I get the whole wishing him well, and hoping that he does find a way to have a productive college career, But we have faster, stronger, more experienced guys. I just don’t see the play where he is going to be the best choice. Unless its a trick play and …no, still can’t see how some bigger, faster, more experinced guy wouldnt pull that off better. Unless the idea is for him to pull it down and throw a pass. I’m not a big fans of those either. Just throw it to AJ and let him run if you are going to do all that.

Bottom line, to meet a solid scoring margin goal of +14, which UGA MUST have, the QB needs to throw for 2 passing td’s a game from 22 passes. 1 td every 11 passes, like Kellen from Boise St. WR’s 1 TD, TE’s 1 TD.
The rushing attack should be solid for 3 td’s a game. 1 td every 13 rushes. Ealey 1 td, King 1 td, Fullbacks 1 td.
The field goal kicker Walsh is solid for 2-3 field goals a game, even from 50+ yards.
The defense should be improved to hold the other team to 19 points a game.
We might be able to average a TD a game off of punt return/kick return/defense return for td.

atl xmen, I tend to disagree with you on the Stafford subject, with the exception of rather Detroit regrets picking him #1 in the draft, or more importantly, paying him the 70+ million bucks, because I have no idea how the people that shelled out the money truley feel. Truth is, they needed a QB & if they wound’t have taken him they were affraid they may regret it one day, or they simply needed a QB & figured they would have to shell out the dough eventually & Stafford was as good a guess as any one QB. Bottom line he never really panned out to be all that at UGA –he was a talent, no doubt, but he was also highly inconsistant, play to play & game to game –at times. Between Stafford & Moreno, the talent was abound, I’m just not so sure the dedication was, as Stafford was quoted as saying after he got sellected in the draft that he really never dreamed of playing college football & that the NFL was where his heart was, and that UGA was choosen because of Mark Richt’s QB experience & UGA was his stepping stone to the NFL. As for Moreno, he pulled himself out too many times for my taste. I know why he did it, I’m just not a fan when college players pull themselves out of games.

Where do you guys come up with this stuff. I have serious doubts that the D units at South Carolina and Arky will “eat him alive” either. Not to say those games or Missy State should be taken lightly. Arky is all O. I would say the first time he faces an all out SEC Defense that will mess with him will be in Jax (and Charlie Strong aint heading it up anymore).

Right on bro’! I don’t understand the whole “we have got to get Logan on the field”. From what I have seen, I don’t understand where all of that is coming from. Maybe, he does fantastic things in practice that I’m not privileged to see. Not knocking the kid, but more curious of where all of this hoopla about him comes from. Have I missed something?
Does he have better hands and runs better routes than AJ? Is he faster than Troupe? Does he catch the ball better than Durham? Can he mow over defenders better than Charles? If so, than get him in as fast as possible.

Well, the Dawgs have an experienced O-line, experienced running backs, world-class receiving corps, and perhaps the best QB coach in the nation. I kind of like Murray’s chances.
This team will go as far as the defense takes it. Experience and depth could be a concern; some of the bigger and badder SEC teams could steamroll them.

I’ve seen Murray up close and personal and have gotten the chance to get to know him. He’s a very bright kid with a good head on his shoulders. We won’t have to worry about him getting into trouble or any of that. I know he’s been working hard down here in Tampa to get in shape for a long tough SEC schedule. Look for him to make smart plays and also a few oops here and there. More good plays than bad. Lets not forget this guy is a playmaker and is great friends with Orson Charles probably the main reason the big guy is in Athens. Lets Go DAwgs Aaron GATA Brother!!!

I really don’t know how our “O” is gonna play out, but we sure are LOADED with talent. Might be a good time to start a Frosh, as our “O” line and backfield are well stocked and experienced.
Can you imagine if Trinton can stay healthy? Either Caleb, or Washaun could carry us behind that line.
A.J., Orson, Aaron, Rontavious, and Tavarres………..we really only have one football in play at a time.
I hope we play “inside-out”, or start with the run and then go to the pass. It doesn’t always have to be so predictable, but i’ve seen some pretty dumb first down calls made during the last couple years.

Yes Chazzo, my apologizes and yes I do no Murray is a RS freshman. However, my point is that he’s never taken a game day snap in the SEC and it will take him time to adjust, as it does every first year (RS) player. Dawg fans would be wise to downplay the pressure on this kid and give him time to adjust, he’s going to need it.

Dumb,
I suppose (whatever team you actually support) that your team’s fans sit around and talk happily about how mediocre your season will be. Actually, I see a mix of overzealous fanatics and super negative down-in-the-mouth fans. I see pretty rational folks. Then I see people like you. What is it that you hope to accomplish? Are you really that concerned about the fact that we are excited fans? BTW, I haven’t really seen anyone prognosticate winning it all. So, your comment is way off base.
All big programs have big expectations. I think UGA has a great mix of talent and coaches this year. I like that UGA is ranked in the bottom of the top twenty this season. I watched a Texas freshman come into the NC last season and light up a very tough Tide defense. I watched Tebow as a freshman come in to games and make big plays. David Green led the Dawgs as a true freshman. Whose to say Murray is not going to be one of the great ones?
So, go back to your summer football thread where all your fans speak rationally about the par season you expect to have.

By Mark Richt’s own words he should be held accountable.
1.His now famous “Arena” speech. In the Gladiatorial “Arena” , the gladiator must win to live! So be it for Mark Richt! The “Bar” in the SEC has been raised. Now he must win “Championships Plural” to stay at the table with LSU,Florida and Alabama.
2. His “spin” on Aaron Murray. “He has the leadership and skill sets. He was an “all-American” in high school.” When Murray throws an interception, Richt should be reminded that he was an all American in high school and has leadership and skill sets.
Later he added “Just watch Aaron Murray’s tape!”

-AJ Green will declare for the NFL Draft after this season.
-Aaron Murray will have a better season than Joe Cox , but will have games where he looks awful.
-The Dawgs will win close games from the exceptional play of their special teams which will be a strength this year.
-The Todd Grantham project will be a moderate success
-There will be a big complaint from many alumni about the new tailgating regulations resulting in… absolutely nothing.

Hmm,
Sounds about right… I will throw in an upset and make them a 10 winner. It is not a crip schedule but much easier than the past couple. It has a good range of games with enough challenges early so as not to get everyone complacent (see UF last season). One thing I am convince of is that everybody wants to win. To hear some talk, you’d think that the losses were planned. I think the big disconnect comes when it stops being fun. I mean that is why I am watching a bunch of kids play football… because it is fun… because I like seeing people overcome adversity, achieve goals and dreams. Sooner or later it comes together and gels. Sooner or later it just doesn’t work. It is a cycle. I appreciate your cautious and level headed prediction. 8 to 10 wins… I won’t be surprised either way. Let Mett go, folks. In my humble opinion, Richt and co. knew they were letting the kid go and gave him the opportunity to showcase in the spring game. One hell of an arm, that kid but passing to tight ends a couple of times over second string 5′10″ corners doesn’t exactly convince me that he was the be all, end all starter for the fall.

Murray will be fine in a couple of years. The learning process will be hard. Bobo will probably get fired to take the heat off Marky Mark Mark. The next season will bring controversy because of the recruiting violations involved in this “Dream Team”….and then Mark Richt will be fired. Only after throwing his best friend overboard, and firing Mike Bobo who has really and truly having to just run Mark Richts early 1990’s offense he had at Florida State and people like Nick Saban figured it out a long, long time ago.

atl xmen, I guess we’ll tend to disagree –and that’s OK. You know what’s said about opinions….. I do agree that Stafford played well his true-frosh season –that’s though for anyone changing from HS to the SEC …the problem I had is he never truly progressed… Joe Cox threw 10 times more long balls than Stafford, and I mean CONNECTED on 10 times more, and lets not forget that Cox isn’t mentioned as being in the same talent zip-code as Stafford, so why the huge difference?? And as for Moreno pulling himself out of games, I believe that should be a call for the coaching staff –Not the players. If they are afraid of getting hurt then they should sit on the sideline until the April draft. Just my opinion.

Saying that passing the ball is the key with Murray is BS. If we can run the ball. Run it. Running tires the other team out. Once they are tired out. The game is basically over. Vince won many a game in the 4th quarter. The other team would just be too tired to stop us and we scored late and won many a game the way. But you have to have faith. Play good defense. Keep the score close. Then go for the killing TD with a mean bunch of offensive lineman. Yes, that have to tuff as hell. As Dooley said of his Nat. champ. line. “I’d go to war with these guys any day”. Thats the coaches job to make them tuff and recruit them tuff.

Attrition : 2001 QB thrown in unprepared 4 loss, 2006 QB thrown in unprepared 4 loss, 2009 QB thrown in unprepared 5 loss, 2009 QB thrown in most concede 3 loss. Gone is Joe Cox, Logan Gray has moved to wide receiver now in his 4th year on campus, Hutson Mason benefited in high school from a pass-happy offense, Zach Mettenberger (Bobo recruit) has been kicked off the team for multiple counts sexual battery with all the other charges not even pursued when he should have played in the Oklahoma State game last year, and now the recruit at QB for next season (Bobo recruit) has had his hearing in Charlotte where he committed the exact same crime as did Michael Grant who the UGA Admissions out-of-hand refused to allow him into UGA prompting Coach Richt to get into it with Admissions over Michael Grant. We play favorites on Offense and 2010 and 2011 show we have not signed the Top Players in-state on Offense. Why is this ? We try to rehabilitate the wayward here if they can play football, as Mike Bobo recruited Zach Mettenberger, Montez Robinson and Christian LeMay, the last 3 to run afoul of UGA Admissions Standards. Aaron Murray threw the fewest TD passes and the most Interceptions in ALL 3 SCRIMMAGES. We also had Five (5) Fumbles in the G-Day Game.
Key Fact : All the QB on the roster have combined for a grand total of 5 completions, 2 interceptions, 0 TD passes.
Key Fact II : Aaron Murray is 5’ 11” and 198 lbs leading to 3 injuries in last 2 years, and has never taken a snap under center at any level of football with talk of him scrambling with his 4.7 speed in the 40-yard dash slower than SEC defensive linemen. There is no back-up All last year, after his broken fibula and dislocated ankle, tackled from behind by a high school defensive lineman, he missed 21 Fall Practices because the coaching staff allowed him to throw his throwing arm out, which is a lingering injury much like that to the knee of Caleb King, which he has never recovered from.
Key Questions : Last season’s turnovers ? Over the last 4 years in a row now, our Average Number of Interceptions is 14 per season 4 years in a row, our Average Number of Fumbles stands at 21 per season as well over the last 4 years in a row, and we Average NCAA Number 96 in Penalties. We don’t practice plays so that we can line up and run them without penalty and when there is no penalty called, they were committed, yet we either throw an interception or fumble. With Coach Richt admitting that the Offense is broken, he has stepped in to make all the decisions on the plays called, who is where on the depth chart on offense, and to sit in on all discussions with the Quarterbacks to “see what is being told to them in every meeting.” That, my friends, is taking over the Offense because Coach Richt says that Mike Bobo is NOT doing the job, and Coach Richt has in public criticized the recruiting on Offense of Mike Bobo’s failed offense. Last year, it was said Joe Cox was GREAT. We had the # 75 NCAA Total Offense and the NCAA # 80 in Passing Offense.

Outlook : 3 losses vs SEC teams means no SEC Championship Game appearance for the 5th year in a row for my beloved Bulldogs. That is then 13 games in a 14-game season. On top of that, it is much-ballyhooed around here that this is (1) what is expected this season and (2) a 10-win season in a 14-game season. We already are the # 19 team in the nation in Won / Loss record over the entire last 4 years at 38-14, and 10-3 this season (or many think 9-4) is once again the # 19 team in the nation. It has been discussed multiple times in this blog that Phil Steele said we should be able to run the table; Phil Steele has us ranked # 19 this up-coming 2010 season, after which we lose 15 Seniors and 4 or 5 Juniors – all Starters. This season, then, is Our Season – not 2011 when all these players are gone. You cannot do a thing in college football when you lose nearly every Starter, which is exactly what we face AFTER THIS SEASON. As for the returning starters on Offense, much has been made about them as well – yet, no one considers they in fact are the # 96 most penalized, have averaged 21 fumbles per year, have averaged 14 interceptions per year and just last year were the # 75 Total Offense. On Defense we are going to be good because last year’s Starters are GONE. On Offense, we are going to be good because last year’s Starters are BACK ? One need look no further than at Caleb King, who came on Campus in 2007 and because of his injury which still requires surgery not performed to fix he ran 0 yards in all 13 games. 2008 Caleb King had 5 of the 13 games where he ran the football for -0- or -1- yard total; in addition in 2008 Caleb King rushed 4 more games for 5 yards, 7 yards, 12 yards and 18 yards. In 2009, he was promoted to Starter and ran the football in 13 games -0- yards 3 more games, 7 yards 1 game, 14 yards 1 game and 19 yards 1 game. Of the 39 games since Caleb King was recruited as the # 1 football player in the state of Georgia, he has had 22 – more than half where he was unable to perform more than 1 yard rushing. This season, he schooled the recruit from Decatur at Running Back that it is a grind being a running back at UGA, and Caleb King is the Prima Donna example of the Strength and Conditioning of this team with a paltry showing of 225 lbs reps.
Crucial Season for Coach Richt, not yet on the hot seat and he stood pat on his Failed Offensive Coaching Staff, exemplified none worse than what they have failed to do in recruiting on Offense in this State last year 2010 and next year 2011.

Murray was the number 2 or 3 QB recruit in the nation. I am sure this has little to do with how he will perform his first year in the SEC. I am sure, also, that it means that he didn’t spend his life dreaming of mediocrity. I don’t think this kid ever sat around thinking, “I hope I grow up to be a QB that just doesn’t lose.” None of us know how well the Dawgs will do. I do know that these kids want to win it all and they will give it their best. I do know all of us fans want to see these young men succeed on the field and off. BuLLdawg, we’ll never understand your obsession with Caleb King, but surely YOU understand you can’t blame a kid for getting redshirted, right? So when you count 39 games against him, you realize he was redshirted the first season? And that he missed 3 because of injury? And if he only gets the ball once, that’s not his decision, either?
You understand all that, right? Because it sure seems like you don’t.
you are obsessed with that young man and will cling to the games in 2008 where he was only given the ball once instead of looking at his success against Auburn or Georgia Tech or Arkansas.
That kid has worked hard, has played with an injury. When he had his jaw broken against LSU, no one is really sure when it happened because he didn’t let it show – he wasn’t flat on the field, he didn’t pull himself out of the game.
I am thinking you call him a “prima donna” becuase he won’t call you back. Get over the kid already.

Shows how dumb the scouting services (and college coaches) are. Mason’s best offers prior to the 2009 playoffs were Indiana, UAB, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. That’s from today’s Marietta Daily Journal.

I think everyone is reading WAY too much into the spring game. I mean Carlton Thomas and Justin Houston were great in the spring game last year, and neither did much during the year. A spring game is a glorified practice, that’s all it is!
Also, I don’t share the opinion that many Dawg fans have about Mettenberger based on ONE spring game. He has good size and a great arm, but he’s slow and un-athletic in the pocket which doesn’t bode well for him with the speed of the SEC. And after talking with many of his classmates from Oconee County, most of whom think he’s a monster jerk; I had major concerns about his maturity level which eventually revealed itself to be in Valdosta. Even if Mettenberger won the starting job, I could see him getting in trouble during the season and getting kicked off the team. If he’s going to act like an idiot, it’s better to cut him lose in the off-season.
Finally, I have seen all I have wanted to see from Logan Gray, especially after that awful pick 6 he threw vs. Florida. He has terrible mechanics, and is a hybrid athlete. Not to mention he’s a Toolbag Whigger! If Murray goes down and Gray has to take over this team, UGA could go 6-6.No joke.

ANY Dawg fan who is not behind this kid 110 % needs to find another school to support and another team to buy game tickets for. I am SURE that the NATS, GSU, or Ga Southern would love to sell you a season package.
I am sick of hearing about how him being a RS frosh with no experience. I am sicker of the “injury prone” bull$hit. I am most sick about the concerns about his height.
First, you bunch of jelly-spined hand-wringers seem to forget we’ve been down this road before and come out smelling pretty dang nice. David Green, anyone?
Second, we have gone into the season with an untested QB before. Mixed results emerged, I admit. But this is definitely not the primary concern and it shouldn’t be.
Lastly, I don’t have the exact numbers, but there have been a bunch of VERY successful QB’s who were in the 6′0″ to 6′1″ range. DJS and EZ come to mind. The kid from Mizzou and the 5″10″ dude from Kansas? How about the Super Bowl MVP?
Relax people. Murray is for real and he will prove it. He just needs a little game time to evolve.

From what I saw at G-Day, Murray was ranked so high because he was on a great team, with great athletes. In other words, OVER-RATED. Plant High on the State Championship the year before he QB’d & the year after he left. Look slike Tampa won for other reasons besides Murray. Even the year Murray QB’s in the State Championship, another QB started 7 games that year for Plant, because Murray was hurt again. So Murray has never led a tam to a championship.

How does Murray learn to adjust to his new role where he’s not the playmaker, but the distributor to the playmakers? UGA already has 7 BIG-TIME proven playmakers with AJ, Washauan, Orson, Aaron, Tavarres, Branden, & Rontavius.
Murray will have his chance to be the playmaker in 2-3 years, 2010 is not about HIM. UGA’s QB can NOT be the playmaker in 2010–just too inexperienced and too many other weapons. We’ll see how big his ego is, some guys can’t adjust to being a secondary player. I’d prefer Logan Gray in this role, Gray is all about TEAM. Just think Murray will try to do it all by himself.
McElroy adjusted, and played a mild secondary role, and won a National Championship. But McElroy’s a very unselfish player. He basically just distributed the ball to his 2 RB’s and Julio.
Even Michael Jordan couldn’t win a championship until he started trusting his teammates to make plays.
Do we have a Dan Marino here or a Terry Bradshaw?

Can Murray be content to move from “Playmaker” at Plant High to “RolePlayer” at UGA? I doubt it.
On G-Day, Ealey or AJ or Charles didn’t make a big play. All you saw was Murray trying to show off his “big arm” slinging it 50 yards down the field, 10 yards past AJ.
Then you saw Murray trying to show his mobility, by not taking a sack, and throwing an INT when pressured.
This looks more like a “ME” player than a “TEAM” player.

We will know by October whether or not AM can manage the offensive game plans he will be given.
Personally, I think he will do well.
Greene became the unquestioned leader of this team against Tennessee in the Hobnail Boot game…October, 2001 as a RS freshman. And the level of talent around him that year was no where near what Murray will have to work with.

All Mason is going to do over the summer is try to learn the first 1/3 of the play book and throw to recievers in 7-on-7 drills. All this while adjusting to life as a freshman on campus and carrying 13-15 credits minimum.
He’ll get a shot in fall camp but he won’t have enough knowledge of the offense to do anything but signal in plays from the sideline this year.
Hopefully we can play well enough in some games to get him some 4th quarter snaps, but that is about all he can expect.

Dunn you could do the same with ealey’s spring stats. Carlton Thomas had a better spring game than Washaun Ealey.
Washaun Ealey: 22 yards on seven runs (3.1 ypc)
Carlton Thomas: 54 yards on eight runs (6.75 ypc)
So does that mean Carlton Thomas will be the starter and that Ealey sucks since he only managed a measley 3 yards per carry?
Of course not!!! We all know Ealey is good for more than 3 ypc when it counts.

Georgia has one of the best OL’s in the SEC. Once he settles in, and gets past the SC game, Murray will surprise a lot of doubters.
If the OL fails to protect him early, though, he could get easily rattled. Murray’s and Georgia’s success depends on the OL. He is talented enough to succeed if he has the time and trusts his OL to protect him long enough to mature and get comfortable playing SEC football.

# 4 vs SEC, maybe # 5
Might as well get behind Aaron Murray
Aaron Murray is smaller than DJ Shockley, who still hasn’t thrown an NFL pass.
Aaron Murray is not nearly as fast as DJ Shockley
Aaron Murray’s arm is no where in the same world as DJ Shockley
DJ Shockley graduated Cum Laude
DJ Shockley had 4 years preparation for his 1 year as Starter
and got injured during that 1 season as Starter
Do not come in here and presume to compare Aaron Murray now to DJ Shockley 2005
What we have seen of Aaron Murray, he is not ready
Now, you put up what you think our record will be when this season is over.
I figure with this soft schedule that we will end the season # 19 in The Final AP Poll Top 25 at 10-3 or 9-4 (depends on his injuries)
Turn a blog about the Dogs need a solid and injury free season from Aaron Murray where is solid but doesn’t try to do too much into a discussion that Caleb King against good run defenses, has done NOTHING since he got here with him the Starter the last 5 games in a row ?
Excuse me, that is about Caleb King before the headlines for this blog hit the Internet. He just has to get on the field, hold onto the football, take advantage of the carries he’s given, and do something for us in the big games.
The only real big game is # 5 in all the polls, Florida. There are no other ranked teams. Lose to South Carolina and they will be ranked in all the polls. Lose to Auburn and the same. Lose to all 3 and we won’t be ranked. Lose to Georgia tek and don’t come in here telling me with 15 seniors and 4 or 5 juniors gone after this season, that we will be great in 2011. Lose to Arkansas and we will not be ranked. Lose to South Carolina in Game 2 and we won’t be ranked.
Those are all beatable teams, including Florida – if we just had a QB prepared for this season. This was our season. I will be more than happy to go back and play back your posts of prior years of how great we are going to be in 2010
not 2011.
Now, you have already before the season started started up with your typical mantra of get behind the QB here
which has let us down since after DJ Shockley
and wait till next year 2011 in this case June 2010.
The polls are very important.
If you start out ranked # 1 in the nation, play 3 good teams, lose to all 3, you will still be ranked after the season.
If you start out # 24 and lose game 2, you are not ranked.
You will have to beat a good team to get ranked. There is only 1 good team on the schedule, and they are 7-2 vs Coach Richt already.
By the way, 2011 is not going to a QB from Charlotte because he committed the exact same thing that Michael Grant did in the same place with the same circumstances and UGA Admissions will not let him in.

Logan Gray is the safest pick to QB the Dogs. Aaron Murray is the riskiest due to interception+injury prone, Hutson Mason is the 2nd riskiest due to inexperience in the system. Richt must be betting that Murray will make massive improvements in August over his atrocious Spring. Richt’s also betting Murray will SUDDENLY go a season injury free, whihc Murray has never done. Richt’s alos hoping Murray won’t try and be a hero.
Gray is less injury-prone, he’s not going to try and be a hero, and as he’s shown on G-Day, he’ll protect that football. Gray already has his teammtes trust, Murray doesn’t have any except Orson Charles’, who’s hoping Murray will turn back to the high school version of Murray.

Dunn-
What are you, some kind of Mason groupie?
Go ahead and “break out” your spring stats, chucklehead. I was there. I saw the game. So what?
The G-Day game is just one scrimmage. They run them all spring and fall. Plus, they run a ton of 7-on-7 drills for the offense to work on timing. Murray has performed better OVERALL than his competition in practice.
During G-Day, his particular play package required him to attempt a large number of low-percentage plays, such as deep passing routes and long out and ups. No one, including your beloved Mason would have done any better.
These types of plays take a lot of practice and repetition to become proficient.
You don’t get either in spring practice. Now that Murray will take the majority of the snaps in fall practice, he will improve dramatically. In every area he is required to.
But I guess this is garbage to you. Of course, since you have more experience at judging QB flesh than anyone on the UGA staff. Richt has only coached two Heisman Trophy quarterbacks, a QB with average arm strength at best to the most D-1 wins in his career (until this last season when McCoy took the honor) and the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft.
He thinks Murray is a pretty good choice to take over. As does the aforementioned McCoy
How many snaps has Mason taken under center? In LHS’s offense, they throw it 60 times a game. Does he even know how to hand off the ball to a RB? Does he even know how to sell a play-action fake? Can he toss it to back on a sweep? All I’ve seen him do is stand back there in the shotgun and throw it…mostly to the same recievers over and over again and…against mediocre HS defenses.
Mediocre is probably a very generous description.
If you don’t want to support AM, then don’t. But he is now the leader of this team and chumps like you need to get used to it.
He might struggle in the beginning, but he will become a great QB for us. So GATA or get the he11 out of the way!

This article asked 2 questions, and then for my opinion.
I am paraphrasing:
1- Do I think Murray will be able to stay injury free?
Of course not. Murray hasn’t for the last 2 years, and I think his instinct is to freestyle caution free and as a dual-threat running QB, and due to his past history, there’s a high chance he’ll get injured.
Will he be able to not try and be a hero and just manage the game?
Absolutely not. He’s had 2 Spring’s now to learn, and this Spring has not been able to do it over ANY of the 3 Spring scrimmages. Couldn’t finish ONE GAME without throwing an interception. He threw more interceptions over the Spring scrimmages than Gray or Mettenberger, looks like a repeat of last year, perhaps worse with his frequency of interceptions. Didn’t see him getting the ball to playmakers on short passes, saw him throwing it 20-30 yards down the field.

The UGA QB has to earn that trust from coaches, teammates & fans. It’s not a given. Needs to go out on the field and perform like he knows how to score enough, stay healthy, and do some ball protection. Murray blew his chances when he’s been in front of fans, and throwing so many bad balls/interceptions over Spring, and by getting injured so fast last season. Gray looked sharp both G-Days, and has stayed healthy, but blew his chances when put in some real games like Florida. Mett looked great in front of the fans on G-Day, stayed healthy, but blew his chances with off the field decision making. Havn’t seen Mason play yet.

Olson said…”I can’t remember the last time UGA won an SEC Championship without a QB from the state of Georgia. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the SEC Championships come form a guy who loves UGA.”
And there’s the rub against UGA and why you will never be considered more than an also ran in major college programs. With that type of attitude, you won’t be winning any recruiting wars against the USC’s, Ohio States, Oklahoma’s, Texas’, Florida’s, etc for the elite players. These are top tier programs that get first choice and then there’s the next level with the Georgia’s etc. Remember, that the last time you got some top tier players going against these elite schools, was with Aaron Murray who then helped bring in Charles, Brown, some offensive linemen, and other receivers who wanted to play on an up and coming program. You’re delusional if you think the best players in the nation come from Georgia, QB or any other positions….Texas, Florida, California, Ohio, have the most “multi-star” recruits per state and UGA must be able to attract some of these skill players. If not you jokers will be bragging about averaging your ten win seasons since CMR, you averaging top 5 recruiting classes under CMR, having no depth at skill positions where an injury has you saying the famous “Wait until next year” mantra. Try getting behind your team, your coaches, all of your players, and yes that includes the named QB going into the fall.

Oklahoma had to go back to the wishbone, because of Holleway’s abilities…running. Aikman then transferred to UCLA where there was a more passing type of offense. Not saying Mason can’t win the job, but it won’t be in the first few games. Heck, he wouldn’t even have a chance to work with the coaches until August, and with the first game being Sept 4th, I think you’re asking a little too much. If he has always been in the spread, then he has to learn how to take the snap under center, drop back while looking down-field, work on his foot work, learn how to fake hand-offs, or just hand the ball off, pitching it, etc., knowing where all the skill players are on every play, and just learning the whole playbook. Think it’s time to back off with some of your analysis because you’re just off base at this time. Give the season a few games before giving up on the team.

I retract my previous assessment of Dunn-
With that much adoration, he must be Mason’s daddy.
Maybe it’s not adoration. Maybe it’s hero worship. Maybe it’s unrequited love. Who knows?
It’s way off the weird chart, though.
All I do know is that Hutson may turn out to be a super college quarterback, but he too has never taken an SEC snap. Not even a G-Day snap. He has MINIMAL knowledge of the playbook.
And he’s going to come in and become the starter by the third game? GMAFB!
I know he set some significant GHSA records at Lassiter. I for one, am glad he chose to come to UGA. But, high school stats and achievements don’t mean squat, right? At least that’s what some other genius posted a few entries back.
Mason may seriously contend for the starting job next season. But that will mean that Murray was a complete and utter failure, which is unlikely. And LeMay will be in the mix then, too.
2011 will be interesting to say the least. Who will come out on top? Who will tuck tail and run to another school because they can’t or won’t compete?
Yep, it’s gonna be somethin’ to watch.
For all you doubters and non-believers, the bus leaves at sundown. Be on it.

Richt and Bobo are making a lot of money to manage this program. I have faith in them to do the right thing. Murray will be great…if not corrective action will be taken. Support the Dawgs program or go help the North Ave team with your sage advice. You are wasting my time scrolling thru your negative dribble.

So go with your most expereinced QB, not to mention that no other QB existed on the team that could have started….and that was my ill-fated advice? Who should have said something and what exactly would that have been? Direct snap to the full back every play?
And yes I still believe that you actualy go ahead and play out the season with the coaches that are on the staff once the season starts.

Murray will be fine…..he will step in make a few mistakes, but make some plays that will make us proud….let’s just face it….last year was the worst year we have had in a long long time at the quarterback spot……..Our main concern would be to develop him as a leader and do our best to keep him in Athens for 4 years……

Murray won’t last more than 2-3 SEC games before they hand him his head on a platter.
Richt should be on the telephone begging Zach Mettenberger to come back.
Too bad about Da’Rick. The thug would have fit right in at UGA.

Would someone please address the “sucky” state the UGA football program has gotten in over the last four years?

Now that we’re in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a serioud discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any football players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved. If anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while the clueless Mark Richt has absolutely no control over his players. And then there is the infamous “red panties” incident.
UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.

The burning question is whether Warden Mark Richt will have enough players by September to field a team. More of his players get arrested every week.
Any other university would have fired a coach who has so little control over his players.
But at least… Red panties are falling from the sky!
